“Living in Rome”
Documents required to enter (VISA) and stay in Rome (RESIDENCE PERMIT)
Residence Permit
EU citizens may enter Italy with a passport or ID card and are entitled to stay for study or work as long as
like. You are however required to register with the Questura (police station) in order to obtain residence and
therefore you should ensure that you have all the documents requested for this procedure before you leave
your home country.
To enter in Italy foreign Non-EU students who plan to stay for a period more than three months need a
“visa” given by the Italian Embassy. To get a “visa” the University Roma Tre sends the Letter of Acceptance
to the University of the student. The acceptance letter is the official certificate that says that the student has
been accepted by an Italian University.
After their arrival in Italky non EU citizens are required to apply for a residence permit within 8 working
days since their arrival in Italy. After enrolling at the University of Roma Tre, you have to turn to a postal
office with the following documentation:
1. A declaration of University of Roma Tre assessing your regular enrolment;
2. 4 passports photos;
3. A valid identification document/card and a photocopy of it;
4. Copy of the health insurance certified by the Italian Consulate or Embassy in your home country
– copy of the visa;
5. A stamp duty of 14.62 euro (available at all tobacco shops);
6. the receipt of payment of the 27,50 Euro pre-labelled bill available at Poste Italiane “Sportello
Amico”, for the issuing of the electronic residence permit
7. A residence declaration (recommended) released by your house owner/landlord in Roma.
You will be given a provisional card to be used as a proof of your application until the actual permit is
issued.

Obtain health insurance cover
EU students are required to have the E111 or any equivalent form to benefit from the health service cover.
Non-EU students must show a certified health insurance cover ( it is recommended to have a copy certified
by the Italian Consulate or Embassy). Otherwise foreign students may pay for their health insurance filling
another form in the Poste Italiane. You may choose to fill a bulletin for the value of: 49.00 € (from 0 to 6
months of cover) or of 98.00 € (from 6 to 12 months of cover).
The bulletin must be registered to:
INA – ASSITALIA
C/C n. 71270003
Causale: Polizza sanitaria studente straniero
Importo: 49.00 € or 98.00 €
ASL (Aziende Sanitarie Locali) provide health services and are located all around the city (Municipi). To
register to the ASL, students must turn to the ASL district registry office of the district where they live. To
know where the nearest office is, you can check: http://www.romaa.it/asl.htm
To register bring:
• your ID card/passport;
• the E 111 form or any equivalent form;
• a proof of registration at Roma Tre
To be admitted to the “Pronto Soccorso” (emergency room) you don’t have to register. There is a “Pronto
Soccorso” (emergency room) available in all hospital.
There is also an emergency home service (“Guardia Medica Permanente”/duty doctor). If you have private
health insurance follow its instructions. For further information about health services for foreign people in

Banks
Banks are open from Monday to Friday from 8.30a.m. to 1.30 p.m. In the afternoons the opening
hours change from bank to bank between 2.30/3 p.m. and 4/4.30 p.m. The most of the Banks have a cash
dispenser (Bancomat) outside.
It could be quite complicated to open a bank account in the case of a temporary residence in Italy. The easier
and cheapest way to receive money from abroad is opening a savings account (Libretto di
risparmio). However, this will not provide cheque books.
If you need to open a bank account please collect the following documents:
• the Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) or proof of application;
• the Tax number (Codice Fiscale)
• the ID card/passport
• a proof of the regular enrolment at Roma Tre.
To transfer money from abroad via bank draft, international students shall give their Rome account number,
the Bank code (for Banca di Roma: ABI 03002) and the appropriate CAB (Codice di Avviamento
Bancario) indicating to which branch office in Rome you want the money to be transferred. Do not expect it
to be a fast procedure. Any other bank you may choose would have a similar procedure.

Climate
Because of its central position in the Italian peninsula Rome enjoys a mild climate. Winter temperatures are
seldom as low as in the North and summer temperatures are never as high as in the South. The hottest month
is July. Generally you will need jumpers plus a heavy parka/jacket and a raincoat in the Winter. In the month
of October, when central heating may not be on, it could be warmer outdoors than indoors.

Where to read and study in Rome
Rome Libraries
The main Rome University Libraries are Biblioteca Nazionale and Biblioteca Alessandrina located on the
campus of the Sapienza University. It is open from Mondays to Fridays from 8.30 am. to 7 pm.; Saturdays
from 8.30 am. to 1.30 pm. Access is open to anyone with an ID card/passport. It may be useful to get a
library card (Tessera) which gives you access to more services, such as special collections, etc. The Tessera
can be issued by the Students Support and Services Office.
To be allowed to take out books, you need a special form called "malleveria" available at the library Ufficio
Prestiti (Loans Office). The form must be signed by your academic co-ordinator, stamped by your Faculty
Secretariat and returned to the library.
Libraries are attached to individual Faculties and Departments at Roma Tre.
You will find the National Library (Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale Vittorio Emanuele) close to Termini
Railway station. It is the largest Public Library in Rome and one of the two largest in Italy. It is located in
Viale Castro Pretorio 105, open from Mondays to Fridays from 8.30am. to 6.50pm., Saturdays from 8.30am.
to 1.20pm.
The book lending service, however, has many restrictions. For access and get a library card (Tessera) follow
the same procedure as for the Biblioteca Alessandrina. In some cases it is necessary to show a letter of
recommendation from your home academic co-ordinator detailing your research project to and lend books.
Other research libraries or specialised academic institutions are listed below.
