Nell’immediato dopoguerra la fabbrica Ducati era stata distrutta dai bombardamenti
e la ricostruzione appariva alquanto difficoltosa. Grazie però all’intuito dell’Avv. Aldo
Farinelli ed all’ingegno di un coraggioso progettista, Aldo Leoni, che riuscì a sviluppare
un prototipo di motore ausiliario da montare su qualsiasi modello di bicicletta, la Ducati
ebbe una svolta decisiva nel suo percorso. Tale progetto presentava infatti numerosi
vantaggi rispetto alla concorrenza, in particolare per quanto riguarda il ciclo a quattro
tempi e il cambio a due marce, che sfruttava appieno la potenza del motore. Nel 1946
la Ducati cominciava la produzione in proprio del Cucciolo e da lì nacque l’affascinante
storia delle rosse di borgo Panigale.
Oggi come allora due aziende italiane, rispettivamente leader nel proprio settore, uniscono le forze per rivoluzionare i costumi e innovare nella mobilità urbana. Grazie infatti
alla partnership tra Ducati e Italwin, e alla collaborazione tra il designer di Italwin e il
Centro Stile Ducati, è tornato il Cucciolo col suo affascinante stile vintage e, insieme
a lui, dei gioielli di design dal look assolutamente distintivo che completa una serie di
caratteristiche e peculiarità tecniche derivanti dalla tecnologia e dall’esperienza nel
campo delle biciclette elettriche dell’azienda Italwin.
Immediately after the Second World War the Ducati factory had been destroyed by the
bombing and reconstruction seemed quite difficult. But thanks to the intuition of the attorney Aldo Farinelli and the ingenuity of the daring designer Aldo Leoni, who managed
to develop a prototype of an auxiliary motor to be mounted on any bike model, there
was a major change in Ducati history. This project was indeed ahead of the competition,
thanks to the four-stroke cycle and a two-speed gearbox, which used engine power
more efficiently. In 1946 Ducati began production of the Cucciolo and that was the
beginning of the fascinating history of the red bikes from Borgo Panigale.
Today, as then, two Italian companies, respectively leaders in their field, have joined
forces to revolutionize the habits and innovate urban mobility. In fact, thanks to the
partnership between Ducati and Italwin, and to the collaboration between the Italwin
designer and the Ducati Design Center, the Cucciolo has returned with its fascinating
vintage style, and with it other design jewels with a very distinctive look that complements a series of characteristics and technical features coming from Italwin’s technology and experience in the field of electric bicycles.

Abbiamo inizialmente sviluppato iTorq per le biciclette Ducati, perché volevamo offrire una
bicicletta che unisse prestazioni e piacere di guida, unendo i pregi dei sistemi a sensore di
rotazione con quelli dei sistemi a sensore di coppia, senza gli svantaggi di entrambi.
Grazie ad un lavoro di ricerca e sviluppo svolto insieme ad un’azienda specializzata olandese,
abbiamo dapprima creato una versione speciale del sensore di coppia, capace di rilevare
con precisione anche il semplice sfioramento dei pedali, per poi sviluppare dei profili di assistenza innovativi. Cosa offre iTorq che altri sistemi basati sulla rilevazione della coppia non
offrono? Con iTorq nel profilo di massima assistenza è sufficiente sfiorare i pedali per ricevere
l’assistenza elettrica, e non c’è effetto on-off tra una pedalata e l’altra. I profili iTorq variano in
modo graduale da assistenza elevatissima fino all’assistenza “nord-europea”, per soddisfare
ogni tipologia di utente. Infine il precisissimo sensore senza parti in movimento e senza
manutenzione è incorporato nel telaio, quindi c’è assoluta libertà nella scelta di pedivelle e
movimento centrale. E rispetto ai sistemi basati sul sensore di velocità?
Si può procedere alla velocità desiderata, invece che alle velocità prestabilite dal sistema;
anche le accelerazioni sono come le si vogliono, dolci, progressive o energiche.

We initially developed iTorq for the Ducati range, to provide the ultimate bicycle in terms of
performance and enjoyable riding feeling, by combining the advantages of speed sensor
systems with those of the torque sensor systems without the disadvantages of both.
We started a process of joint development in partnership with a dutch company, developing
a special version of the torque sensor capable to accurately detect even the simple touch
of the pedal, and then a series of innovative assistance profiles. What does iTorq offer that
others don’t? ITorq is extremely sensitive, so in the maximum assistance profile it is sufficient
to simply touch the pedals to get the electric assistance; another obvious merit is the lack
of the on-off effect between pedal strokes. iTorq software provides support profiles that
vary gradually from “northern european” to “very high”, in order to satisfy all users. Finally,
the high-precision sensor with no moving parts and no maintenance is built into the frame,
so there is more freedom in the choice of cranks and bottom bracket. And how does iTorq
compare to “speed” sensor systems? The first major difference is the ability to proceed at
any desired speed, rather than the predetermined speed of each specific system. Also, the
accelerations are as you want them: slow, progressive or energetic.
Inoltre iTorq è più efficiente e silenzioso: grazie alla qualità dell’elettronica, del software e dei
componenti, la bicicletta fa più strada e il motore diventa praticamente inudibile.
Infine la bicicletta non richiede uno specifico apprendimento, è facile e naturale da usare sin
dal primo utilizzo.
Ma il nuovo sistema iTorq offre ancora di più:
- un’auto-calibrazione all’accensione, per offrire sempre le migliori prestazioni;
- un’interfaccia a manubrio con grande display, che oltre all’indicazione dello stato della batteria e del livello di assistenza selezionato, mostra anche le tipiche informazioni del ciclocomputer: velocità, distanza, tempo, velocità media, senza bisogno di montare sensori e magneti;
- fornisce energia alle luci della bicicletta, che quindi non sono più alimentate dalle pilette
usa e getta o da fastidiose dinamo;
- va in stand-by da solo se dimenticato acceso, per evitare le temute sovrascariche che
possono danneggiare in modo irreversibile la batteria;
- l’indicazione dello stato di carica della batteria tiene conto del carico tipico durante l’uso e
non tiene conto dei picchi, offrendo un’informazione più attendibile.
In addition iTorq is more efficient and quiet thanks to the quality of the electronics, software
and components, the bicycle has more range and the engine is practically inaudible.
Finally, the bike does not really require a learning process, it is easy and natural from the
first time.
But the new iTorq system offers more:
- performs a self-calibration when turned on, to always offer the best performance;
- it has a handlebar interface with large display, which in addition to the battery status and
level of support selected, also shows the typical cycle computer information: speed, distance,
time, average speed, without having to place sensors and magnets on the wheels;
- it powers to the lights of the bike, which are not powered by disposable batteries or by
annoying dynamos anymore;
- auto standby function, if forgotten on, to avoid the dreaded overdischarge that can cause
irreversible damage to the battery;
- the battery charge indication takes into account the typical load during use and does not
take into account the peaks, providing a more reliable indication.

piece of design, available in the two versions “speed” and “iTorq”, identical in design
but with very different electronics. The “speed” version, equipped with a traditional
external rear derailleur, is appreciated for the quick response of the optical sensor and
for the freely chosen ratio of assistance. The new “iTorq” version has been created for

The City Queen is a light and fast bike, beautifully designed and with a technological
