Venice
Venice is a city in northeastern Italy sited on a group of 118 small islands
separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy
Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline between the
mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Venice is renowned for the
beauty of its setting, its architecture and its artworks. Venice is the capital
of the Veneto region.
The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark is the cathedral church
of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice, northern Italy. It is the
most famous of the city's churches and one of the best known examples
of Byzantine architecture (like Byzantine mosaics). It lies at the eastern
end of the Piazza San Marco, adjacent and connected to the Doge's
Palace. Originally it was the chapel of the Doge, and has only been the
city's cathedral since 1807, when it became the seat of the Patriarch of
Venice, archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice,
formerly at San Pietro di Castello.
The Grand Canal is a canal in Venice, Italy. It forms one of the major
water-traffic corridors in the city. Public transport is provided by water
buses and private water taxis, and many tourists explore the canal by
gondola. At one end, the canal leads into the lagoon near the Santa
Lucia railway station and the other end leads into Saint Mark Basin; in
between, it makes a large S-shape through the central districts (sestieri)
of Venice. It is 3,800 m long, 30–90 m wide, with an average depth of
five meters (16.5 ft).
Piazza San Marco (often known in English as St Mark's Square), is the
principal public square of Venice, Italy, where it is generally known just
as "the Piazza". All other urban spaces in the city (except the Piazzetta
and the Piazzale Roma) are called "campi" (fields). The Piazzetta (the
'little Piazza') is an extension of the Piazza towards the lagoon in its
south east corner (See plan). The two spaces together form the social,
religious 6and political centre of Venice and are commonly considered
together. This article relates to both of them. A remark usually attributed
to Napoleon calls the Piazza San Marco "the drawing room of Europe“.
Milan
Milan is the main industr ial,
commercial and financial centre of
Italy and a leading global city. Its
business district hosts the Italian Stock
Exchange and the headquarters of the
largest national banks and companies.
The city is a major world fashion and
design capital. Thanks to its important
museums, theatres and landmarks
(including the Milan Cathedral, the fourth largest cathedral in the world,
and Santa Maria delle Grazie, decorated with Leonardo da Vinci
paintings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site) Milan attracts more than two
million annual visitors. It hosts numerous cultural institutions and
universities, with 185,000 enrolled students in 2011, i.e. 11 percent of the
national total. The city is also well
known for several international events
and fairs, including Milan Fashion Week
and the Milan Furniture Fair, the largest
of its kind in the world, and will host the
2015 Universal Exposition. Milan is
home to two of the world's major
football teams, A.C. Milan and F.C.
Internazionale Milano.
Sacro Monte di Varese
The Sacro Monte di Varese (literally
‘Sacred Mount of Varese’) is one of the
nine sacri monti in the Italian regions of
Lombardy
and
Piedmont which were
inscribed
on
the
UNESCO list of World
Heritage Sites in 2003.
The devotional complex is located in Parco del Campo
dei Fiori 6km north of Varese. It consists of fourteen
chapels that were constructed between 1604 and
1623.

Borromean Islands
The Borromean Islands are a group of three small islands and
two islets in the Italian part of Lago Maggiore. Their name derives
from the Borromeo family, which started acquiring them in the early
16th century (Isola Madre) and still owns the majority of them (Isola
Madre, Bella, San Giovanni) today.
Isola Bella (lit. Beautiful Island): Isola Bella is dominated by its
sumptuous Baroque palace, along with a luxuriant Italian-style
garden. The garden is full of flowers and exotic plants of great
rarity, which grow thanks to the particularly mild climate of the
Borromean Gulf.
Isola dei Pescatori (lit.
Fishermen’s Island): It is the
most picturesque of the
Borromean Islands, as well the
only one to be permanently
inhabited. Distinctive features
of its little village are narrow
lanes with characteristic twostorey houses, with long
balconies traditionally used for
drying fish.
Isola Madre (lit. Mother Island): It’s the largest of the three
Borromean Islands. Its palace displays furnishings from the historic
8
residences
of the Borromeo Family. Its immense garden of rare
trees and exotic flowers has something of the fascination of a
