Atto Primo. Ducato di Mantova, epoca rinascimentale. Durante una festa a corte, il Duca di Mantova, libertino
incallito, non perde occasione per decantare le proprie conquiste a tutte le dame presenti. Al vederlo allontanarsi
al braccio della Contessa Ceprano - nuova mira del suo corteggiamento - Rigoletto, buffone di corte sciancato
e deforme, sbeffeggia il di lei marito conte di Ceprano. Rispondendo a tali sberleffi, il nobile Marullo asserisce
che il buffone ha un amante, dando così adito in Ceprano a pensieri di vendetta. Sopraggiunge poi anche il
Conte di Monterone con l’intenzione di chiedere ragione al Duca della seduzione di sua figlia. Rigoletto
sbeffeggia anche costui guadagnandone così una maledizione, che lo incupisce preoccupandolo: egli, infatti,
non ha amanti, come sostenuto dal Marullo, ma ha una figlia, che ama teneramente e che custodisce lontano
dagli occhi di tutti, anche e soprattutto per proteggerla dal Duca libertino.
Scorta la sua preoccupazione, Sparafucile offre a Rigoletto i suoi servigi di sicario: come da piano di provata
efficacia, sua sorella Maddalena adesca le vittime designate attirandole in casa, dove poi lui può eliminarle
senza scampo e senza pericoli. L’offerta di Sparafucile viene però rifutatata da Rigoletto: se il sicario usa le
armi per difendersi, il buffone ha un altro tipo di freccia al proprio arco, la lingua. Intanto raccomanda a Gilda
sua figlia e alla di lei cameriera Giovanna, di non fidarsi di sconosciuti e di non lasciar entrare nessuno. Ma
appena dopo averlo rassicurato e averlo visto allontanarsi, Giovanna permette l’ingresso a un giovane, da cui
Gilda è già rimasta colpita vedendolo in Chiesa e che ora le si presenta come un povero studente innamorato
di lei, mentre altri non è che il Duca di Mantova. Ma sopraggiunge qualcuno e il Duca è costretto ad allentarsi,
ma il suo fascino ha definitivamente ammaliato Gilda, che spera di rivederlo. Chi sopraggiunge è appunto
Marullo, insieme ai cortigiani, decisi tutti a giocare uno scherzo a Rigoletto rapendone quella che loro credono
l’amante. Il buffone li scopre, ma essi lo ingannano facendogli credere di esser lì per rapire la moglie di Ceprano,
che abita poco distante. Rigoletto pertanto si offre addirittura di aiutarli, lasciandosi bendare gli occhi con la
scusa che tutti sono mascherati. Solo troppo s’avvede della verità e che la maledizione del Conte Monterone
sta per avverarsi.
Atto secondo. In una sala del palazzo ducale. Il duca, in uno sprazzo di vero sentimento, è turbato perché,
tornato di notte nella casa di Rigoletto, non ha più trovato Gilda. Medita perciò di vendicarsi, ma pensa
soprattutto al dolore e al terrore di Gilda. Quando però entrano i cortigiani annunciando d’aver rapito l’amante
di Rigoletto, egli capisce che Gilda è stata condotta nel suo palazzo, e dunque corre esultante a raggiungerla.
Sopravviene Rigoletto: simula dapprima indifferenza scherzando, poi inveisce contro i cortigiani ed infine ne
invoca la pietà. Viene però raggiunto da Gilda, che gli narra come abbia conosciuto il duca e come da lui sia
stata ingannata e ora oltraggiata. Rigoletto cerca di confortarla ma, alla vista di Monterone che è condotto in
carcere per aver accusato il duca d’aver sedotto anche sua figlia, decide di vendicare il vecchio conte e se stesso
uccidendo il Duca, mentre Gilda invoca pietà per colui che le ha fatto del male, ma di cui lei è comunque
ancora innamorata.

Atto terzo. In riva al Mincio, nottetempo, nella locanda di Sparafucile. Maddalena, civettando come al suo
solito, ha ivi attirato il Duca, procurando sofferenza in Gilda, nel frattempo giunta col padre, che tuttora si
sente legata all’uomo. Rigoletto assolda Sparafucile, perché uccida il corteggiatore di Maddalena e gliene
consegni poi il cadavere chiuso in un sacco. Intanto, vedendo la figlia così sofferente, la esorta a partire per
Verona per dimenticare. Anche Maddalena però s’è inaspettatamente innamorata del Duca e riesce a convincere
il fratello ad uccidere, in sua vece, la prima persona di sesso maschile che entrerà nella loro locanda, per
consegnare poi il cadavere a Rigoletto. Ma è proprio qui che il destino si compie nella maniera più tragica:
Gilda, che tutti credono partita per Verona, in realtà è rimasta segretamente a Mantova per rivedere il Duca e,
non vista, assiste alla conversazione tra Maddalena e Sparafucile, decidendo di sacrificare la propria vita per
salvare quella del Duca. Così, in abiti maschili, bussa alla locanda e Sparafucile, senza ovviamente riconoscerla,
la pugnala. Quando Rigoletto aprirà, fuori dell’osteria, il sacco consegnatogli da Sparafucile, troverà il corpo
dell’agonizzante figlia e non potrà far altro che vederla spirare fra le proprie braccia: mentre il duca si allontana
cantando la beffarda melodia di “La donna è mobile”, Gilda muore, dopo aver chiesto al disperato Rigoletto
il perdono per sé e per il suo seduttore.

Act I
The Duke has seen an unknown beauty in church and desires to possess her, but he also wishes to seduce the
Countess Ceprano. Rigoletto, the Duke's hunchbacked jester, mocks the husbands of the ladies to whom the
Duke is paying attention, and advises the Duke to get rid of them by prison or death. The noblemen, especially
Count Monterone, whose daughter the Duke had dishonoured, resolve to take vengeance on Rigoletto. Monterone
curses the Duke and Rigoletto.
Thinking of the curse, the jester approaches his house and is accosted by the assassin Sparafucile, who offers
his services. Rigoletto contemplates the similarities between the two of them: Sparafucile uses his sword,
Rigoletto both his tongue and wits to fight. The hunchback opens a door in the wall and returns home to his
daughter Gilda, whom he is concealing from the prince and the rest of the city. She does not know her father's
occupation and, as he has forbidden her to appear in public, she has been nowhere except to church.
When Rigoletto has gone, the Duke appears and overhears Gilda confess to her nurse Giovanna that she feels
guilty for not having told her father about a student she had met at the church, but that she would love him
even more if he were poor. Just as she declares her love, the Duke enters, overjoyed, convincing Gilda of his
love, though she resists at first. When she asks for his name, he hesitantly calls himself Gualtier Maldé. Hearing
sounds and fearing that her father has returned, Gilda sends the Duke away after they quickly repeat their vows
of love to each other.
Later, the hostile noblemen outside the walled garden, believing her to be the jester's mistress, convince Rigoletto
to help them abduct the Countess Ceprano. He assists them in their arrangements, but they actually abduct
Gilda. Too late, Rigoletto realises that he has been duped and, collapsing, remembers the curse.
Act II
The noblemen inform the Duke that they have captured Rigoletto's mistress and, by their description, he
recognises it to be Gilda. Since she is in the palace, he rushes off to see her, declaring that at last, she will know
the truth and that he will give up his wealth and position for her, the first person who has inspired him to really
love. Perplexed at first by the Duke's strange excitement, the courtiers now make sport with Rigoletto. He tries
to find Gilda by pretending to be uncaring, as he fears she may fall into the hands of the Duke. Finally, to
general astonishment, he acknowledges that he is seeking his daughtrer. Gilda rushes in, begs her father to send
the people away, and acknowledges the shame she feels in finding out his profession. Rigoletto demands
vengeance against his master, while Gilda pleads for him.

Act III
Half the stage shows Sparafucile's house, with two rooms, one above the other, open to the view of the audience.
Rigoletto and Gilda, who still loves the prince, arrive outside. Rigoletto shows her that the Duke, half-drunk
in despair over losing Gilda, is in the assassin's house but attempting to seduce Sparafucile's sister, Maddalena.
(Aria: La donna e mobile, laying out the infidelity and fickle nature of women).
Rigoletto bargains with the assassin, who is ready to murder his guest for money. Rigoletto orders his daughter
to put on man's attire in order to prepare to go to Verona, where he plans to follow later. Rigoletto offers the
assassin 20 scudi for killing the Duke. As a thunderstorm is approaching, the Duke determines to remain in
the house, and Sparafucile assigns to him the ground floor sleeping quarters.
Gilda, who still loves the Duke and despite knowing him to be unfaithful, returns dressed as a man. She
overhears Maddalena begging for the Duke's life, so the assassin promise her that, if by midnight another can
be found in place of the Duke, he will spare the Duke's life. Gilda resolves to sacrifice herself for the Duke
and enters the house. She is immediately mortally wounded and collapses.
When Rigoletto arrives with the money, he receives a corpse wrapped in a sack, and rejoices in his triumph.
Weighting it with stones, he is about to cast the sack into the river when he hears the voice of the Duke singing
a reprise of his bitter aria. Bewildered, he opens the sack and, to his despair, discovers his mortally-wounded
daughter. For a moment, she revives and declares she is glad to die for her beloved. As she takes her final
breath, Rigoletto exclaims in horror, "The curse!", which is fulfilled upon both master and servant.

I Akt
Auf einem der rauschenden Feste des Herzogs von Mantua denkt dieser an eine schöne Unbekannte, die er in
der Kirche gesehen hat, wendet sich auf der Feier aber der Gräfin Ceprano zu, die er zu verführen gedenkt.
Sein Hofnarr Rigoletto verspottet den ebenfalls anwesenden Ehemann der Gräfin und unterbreitet dem Herzog
vor der Hofgesellschaft den Vorschlag, den Mann der Gräfin zu verhaften, um ihn aus dem Weg zu schaffen
und die Gräfin zu entführen. Selbst die intriganten Höflinge sind über die Bösartigkeit des buckligen Narren
entsetzt. Einer der Höflinge behauptet, Rigoletto habe eine Geliebte, die er allabendlich besuche. Es entsteht
der Plan, die vermeintliche Geliebte des boshaften Narren - bei der es sich jedoch in Wahrheit um dessen
Tochter Gilda handelt - zu entführen, um ihm einen Denkzettel zu verpassen. Schließlich erscheint der Graf
von Monterone, dessen Tochter vom Herzog entehrt wurde. Rigoletto verspottet auch ihn und wird dafür vom
Grafen mit einem Fluch belegt.
Auf dem Heimweg trifft Rigoletto in einer Sackgasse auf Sparafucile, der ihm seine Dienste als Mörder anbietet.
Zu Hause erwartet ihn seine Tochter Gilda, die außer zum Kirchgang nie das Haus verlassen darf und auch
nie ihren Familiennamen und ihre Herkunft erfahren durfte. Giovanna wird ermahnt, das Tor immer geschlossen
zu halten und Rigoletto bricht unruhig wieder auf. Der Herzog hat sich aber eingeschlichen und die Unbekannte
aus der Kirche als Rigolettos Tochter erkannt. In einer schwärmerischen Begegnung stellt er sich ihr als armer
Student vor, Giovanna aber drängt ihn zu gehen. Gilda sieht ihm von ihrem Balkon hinterher, aber die maskierten
Höflinge kommen schon mit einer Leiter, um sie zu entführen. Rigoletto, der sie dabei antrifft, wird glauben
gemacht, man entführe die Frau Cepranos. Auch er wird maskiert und hält noch selber die Leiter. Erst als er
Gildas Rufen hört, wird ihm sein Irrtum klar und er erinnert sich an Monterones Fluch.
II Akt
Im Palast ist der Herzog verärgert, dass seine heimliche Geliebte entführt wurde. Als die Höflinge, die Gilda
immer noch für die Geliebte des Narren halten, ihm erzählen, man habe sie ihm in sein Schlafzimmer entführt,
ist er begeistert und eilt zu ihr. Jetzt erscheint der verzweifelte Rigoletto, der das Verschwinden seiner Tochter
bemerkt hat und sie im Palast vermutet. Sie kommt aus der Tür des Herzogs und entsetzt muss Rigoletto hören,
dass seine Tochter sich in den Herzog verliebt hat. Trotz ihrer Bitten, dem Geliebten zu verzeihen, will Rigoletto
Rache für die beschmutzte Ehre seiner Tochter.

III Akt
Um seiner Tochter den Charakter des Herzogs zu offenbaren, besucht er mit ihr die Schenke des Mörders
Sparafucile und zwingt sie, dort zu beobachten, wie der als Offizier verkleidete Herzog ein Schäferstündchen
mit Maddalena, der Schwester Sparafuciles, verbringt. Anschließend bittet er seine Tochter, als Mann verkleidet
vor dem Herzog nach Verona zu fliehen und beauftragt dann Sparafucile, den Herzog zu ermorden und ihm
dessen Leiche in einem Sack zu übergeben. Als Sparafucile die Tat ausführen will, stellt sich ihm seine Schwester
in den Weg und fleht um das Leben ihres Geliebten. Sparafucile lässt sich erweichen und beschließt, den
nächsten Mann, der zur Tür hereintritt, zu ermorden, um Rigoletto einen mit einer Leiche gefüllten Sack
übergeben zu können. Kurz vor Mitternacht betritt Gilda, die einen Teil des Gesprächs zwischen dem Mörder
und seiner Schwester belauscht hat, als Mann verkleidet die Schenke, um den Herzog zu retten. Sie wird von
Sparafucile erstochen. Als Rigoletto im Morgengrauen erscheint, um den Sack mit der Leiche in Empfang zu
nehmen, glaubt er, seine Rache sei gelungen. Plötzlich hört er die Stimme des Herzogs, der ein Lied singend
die Schänke verlassen hat. Erschrocken öffnet Rigoletto den Leichensack und hält seine sterbende Tochter im
Arm. Der Fluch des Grafen Monterone hat sich erfüllt.
