I believe, sir, you have a daughter. Antonio - Yes, noble Lord. Marquis - And I’ve heard she is pretty, eh? Maddalena - She is your sister’s godchild! Marquis - Even better! Marchese - Come? Come? Tenero core! E per quel cor io l’amo, unico di lui bene. Poveri entrambi siamo, viviam d’amor, di speme: pittore ignoto ancora egli s’innalzerà co’ suoi talenti. Sarò sua sposa allora. Oh! Noi contenti! Addio!(Entra) I Primi - Eccolo! Pierotto! Linda - Ah! My beloved, I arrived far too late to there to meet you. I could not find you, my own dearest Carlo. You must have been so worried, But no more so than I. These flowers you left me as a token of love. You are so tender hearted. It is for this I love you, thoughtful, affectionate Carlo. Our lives are modest, we live on hope and love. But although, for now, you are an unknown artist, one day you will succeed. And then we shall marry and live, in love, for ever. 6 Oh light within me burning That sets my spirit yearning, And you, that love returning Just fills my heart with joy! Oh come to me, beloved, And let your arms enfold me As when, that day, you told me That you’re forever mine. Come to this longing heart That lives for you alone. (She looks pensively at the bouquet of flowers. Young people from the village arrive with baskets of fruit, bread and cheese and start to eat their meal) 7 Chorus - Before we leave, Let us cheerfully sing our praises to his Lordship. Ah Linda! Come and join us. Linda - You are kind, dear friends, I thank you. Chorus - And Pierotto? Yes, where is our good Pierotto? Ah... Listen! Pierotto - (off stage) Dearest valley as I leave you, I think of the days of my childhood Happy memories of my homeland, How my heart for you will yearn. Just a poor and lonely minstrel With but a song to cheer me The most blessed day I long for Is the day that I return. Farewell! (he enters) Chorus - Here he is! Pierotto! 5 5 5 Pierotto - Amici! Linda! Coro ripete commosso e singhiozzando. Partono Pierotto - My dear friends! Linda! Linda - Come now and sing to us The latest song you have written. Pierotto - It’s far too sad and sorrowful And then you’ll soon be weeping! Linda - Come, dear Pierotto. Pierotto - Very well then. I’ll sing it. 8 Once a daughter left her family Went to find a better life. Sadly they embraced each other Mother and daughter, father and wife. “Promise your dear mother” she told her “When you feel the power of temptation, That you’ll pray to God to guide you. He will keep you free from sin. Be sure that God will always be near To protect you, keep you free from harm and fear”. Linda - Ah my heart is filled with sadness And my eyes are filled with tears Pierotto - But, alas, her vow unheeding, Soon she forgot the promise she made. In her blind consuming passion Gave her heart and then was betrayed. Sadly then to home returning Sought her mother’s love and forgiveness, But, alas, she came too late Her mother, her dearest mother was dead. And on her grave for as long as she lived That poor unhappy girl lay down and wept (They all leave except Linda) Scena IV Linda, indi il Visconte, sotto il nome di Carlo. Scene 4 Linda; then the Viscount, as Carlo. 9 Linda - Non so, quella canzon m’intenerisce, e mi rattrista: ho anch’io una madre, forse... E Carlo... andrò domani io prima ad aspettarlo... Oggi, pazienza... Carlo - Linda! Linda! Linda - Ah! Carlo. Carlo - Sei tu sola? A que’ pini all’istess’ora ogni giorno t’aspettava. Linda - That song. How sad it makes me. I have a mother. Perhaps... And Carlo… Tomorrow morning I’ll go to meet him early. But now… have patience! Carlo - Linda! Linda! Linda - Ah Carlo! Carlo - You’re alone now? Linda - Yes. I was feeling so wretched, for I could not find you this morning. Carlo - I could not bear it! Bear a day without seeing my dear one. Linda - Not to find you! Carlo - Not to see you! Linda, Carlo - What a day of torment for me. 10 Carlo - Ah that day when first I met you Was the day I learned love’s meaning. So each day I’d wait to see you By the pine tees gently dreaming. 9 6 Puro amor te là guidava, s’intendeano i nostri cor. Linda - Chi tel vieta? Carlo - Un dì lo spero, ma per or... Linda - Fatal mistero! Carlo - E quanto a me! Linda - Carlo... Carlo - Linda.... 11 A consolarmi affrettisi, o giorno sospirato! Linda - A consolarmi affrettisi, o giorno sospirato! Innanzi al cielo, agli uomini tua sposa diverrò. E allor non più dividerci And that love that led you to me Is the love we’re blessed to share. Ah my dearest one, you are my destiny, And my only joy is when you’re near me. This poor heart is filled with yearning As I look into your eyes. Ah, beloved, may we always be together With a love that never dies! Linda - And we shall be! Carlo - One day I hope so, but for now… Linda - My love, pray tell me. Carlo - Ah my dear one, do not ask me. Linda - Must we always hide our love? Ah, I have always loved my mother And in her I’ve always confided. But now that faith is divided Now her daughter loves another. Though to you my heart is given, Still my love for her endures. And, my dearest one, when every evening With my mother in prayer I’m kneeling, As I speak her name, The other that is on my lips is yours. Ah, God, who reads in my heart, Knows the love we share is pure. Carlo - Ah, you are an angel, God will surely hear you. Linda - I hope and pray he will. And though I know our love must be a secret, Still I suffer... Carlo - I suffer too, my love! Linda, Carlo - Ah, to hide within the heart Such a lasting, sweet affection And to others feign rejection Of the one that he/she desires Is the cruellest blow and greatest sorrow That on this devoted lover fate conspires Linda - Carlo! Carlo - Linda! 11 Come happy day and comfort me, The greatest day I long for Ah, hear my vows! Be sure that we Forever shall be one. And then, my only treasure We’ll never more be parted And all our days in ecstasy, In heaven we shall be. Linda - Come happy day and comfort me, The greatest day I long for Ah, hear my vows! Be sure that we Forever shall be one. And then, my only treasure 7 col mio tesoro a lato: di puro amor fra l’estasi in ciel mi troverò. Linda - Sto sorpresa come mai, tanto reggere potei! Come intrepida ascoltai vostre offerte, e detti rei! Marchese - Ah! Ah! Ah! La mia severa già lo prova... Il cor ritroso sente amor. Linda - I will not hear what you’re saying! Marquis - This is just a game you’re playing. Linda - Don’t come near me! Marquis - I say just hear me! (Looking around) 4 Take this place where you are living. It’s not bad I grant you, Madam. But the Palace I’d be giving’s Full of Chippendale and Adam! All the best in breeds of horses. Every meal with twenty courses! And your own exclusive banker If after something you should hanker! This false modesty is silly! All my world is at your feet! Life without a little passion Is a life that’s out of fashion. So my dear, why not come with me And enjoy it while you may. Linda - I am numb with indignation At your gross insinuation! Your attempt at this flirtation Has confirmed your reputation! Do you think that you can woo me With this wealth you offer to me? Just remember this is my house. You have no right to pursue me. Here I live in quiet contentment All the happiness I need. I am promised to another Sweetest one whom I adore To suggest that I’d betray him! I betray him? I’d rather die! Marquis - Ah! Ha! Ha! How delightful! So already you can feel the urge of love! Linda - Yes, for a husband! Marquis - Husband? I doubt it! Linda - Yes, we are promised. Guardati, pensaci, Marchese mio. Linda - Vecchio insolente! Marchese - Eh! Eh! Che furie! Perché son vecchio: ma... Linda - Basta! Escite. Marchese - Escite! Ah! Ah! Ma sii buonina... Linda - Troppo omai mi cimentaste ed in tutto voi mancaste. L’alto rango che vantate, uom perverso, deturpate. Sì, partite, voi, partite, più a me innanzi ritornar. Marchese - Oh! Guardate... la regina da ricotte, da cascina! Ah! Sentite come impera! Minacciosa, e pure altera. V’obbedisco, o gran sultana e vi prego a perdonar. Me la batto con onore, e la feci un po’ arrabbiar. parte Some country bumpkin makes a pass and... Linda - Sir! I warn you! If he hears how you insult me He’ll have you shaking in your shoes! Marquis - In my shoes? I? Linda - If he ever finds you here! Marquis - (shaken) If he should find me here? Linda - Yes! 5 Marquis - Should he turn out to be Someone of breeding, If he should call me out – no danger heeding. And if he thinks to teach me a lesson Rather than valour, I’ll choose discretion So I shall take good care, watch each situation And be sure that there is no altercation. Think of it, my dear Marquis. Linda - (looking at the secret door) Heaven protect me. How I despise him! Should Carlo find him here and recognise him Now, at our usual time of meeting, Should Carlo see him tormenting me... Ah, how the secret of my love seems to punish me! How heaven wishes to punish my imprudence. Marquis - Marquis, you must be careful! Linda - Go now! Marquis - Go now? I? Ha! Ha! Ha! An order! Well since you ask me to, I’ll go. But first, one little smile Won’t cost you a fortune! Give me your hand… Linda - Please sir, have caution! Marquis - Ha! Ha! What fury! I know I’m older but... Linda - Enough now! Get out! Marquis - Get out? Ha! Ha! Now don’t be unkind… Linda - Sir! Your presence degrades me. Your lack of chivalry dismays me! Pray, no longer try to deceive me, I shall never yield, believe me! So be gone now, yes be gone. Never dare come here again. “Dear Marquis” just remember I am promised And my love my honour will defend. Marquis - Oh “Your Majesty” forgive me. Pray do not be angry with me. I am sorry. I’ll obey you And due homage I will pay you. Just behold “Her Royal Highness” Not a hint of fear or shyness.
