Taking my Time [Prendendomi tempo] è una retrospettiva dedicata al lavoro del grande fotografo americano Joel Meyerowitz. Dai tempi degli esordi a New York negli anni ’60, alla
produzione più recente. Un corpo di lavoro eterogeneo che ha come nucleo centrale il
concetto di “movimento”, inteso come quell’istante effimero, gioioso, tragico, o insignificante che cattura l’occhio del fotografo e diventa il cuore di ogni suo scatto.
Il movimento è tutto per me, è la Vita stessa, traccia il momento che scompare , e , insieme al Tempo, è l’essenza dell’esperienza fotografica. Più di ogni altra cosa è la ragione
per cui ho cominciato a fotografare 50 anni fa, poco tempo dopo aver osservato Robert
Frank scattare un piccolo lavoro di pubblicità per me. Quello che mi colpì profondamente
fu la magia del semplice fatto che “si muoveva” mentre scattava fotografie a persone anche loro in movimento! E questo mi bastò! Lasciai il mio lavoro, presi in prestito una macchina fotografica, uscii fuori per le strade di New York, e da allora non mi sono mai più

La retrospettiva comprende immagini, scattate tra il 1962 e il 2011, in bianco e nero e a
colori e il reportage realizzato presso le rovine di Ground Zero in seguito all’11 Settembre
2001.
La Maison Européenne de la Photographie a Parigi, prima (dal 23.01 al 7.04.2013) e il festival internazionale di fotografia Cortona On The Move 2013 poi (dal 18.07 al 29.09.2013),
hanno dedicato una mostra retrospettiva a tale lavoro, registrando record di incassi.

«Guardandomi indietro mi sembra del tutto naturale che nella vita sia diventato un fotografo. Ero un ragazzo di strada cresciuto tra le case popolari dell’ East Bronx a New York,
e vivevo in una relazione tranquilla con l’energia e la spontanea follia della vita di quelle
strade. Andando in giro per la città col mio Pop, che, a proposito era il sindaco non ufficiale del nostro isolato, e osservando come eventi del tutto ordinari prendessero una piega
inaspettata, ho ricevuto la mia prima educazione sulle commedie e tragedie della vita di
tutti i giorni. Pop mi prendeva spesso in disparte e mi diceva, rapido e sottovoce: “Guarda
quel tipo lì....”, e subito succedeva qualcosa di inatteso o uno strano incontro e ci ritroviamo a ridere a crepapelle per una buffa disavventura di qualcuno o qualche incidente di
poco conto. Come lo sapeva? Sembrava che potesse sempre intuire e predire quello che
stava per succedere. Spesso mi diceva con aria sognante: “Guarda qui!”con la semplice
eccitazione data dal respirare le meraviglie del mondo. Questi improvvisi richiami mi rendevano più attento a quello che succedeva intorno a me. Sono convinto che siano state
queste esperienze a generare in me la curiosità e il piacere che provo semplicemente
nell’osservare il mondo e la convinzione che possa sempre regalarmi qualche rivelazione
inattesa».

Taking my Time
50 Years of Looking at the World
JOEL MEYEROWITZ
‘It seems natural to me now, how easily my transformation to becoming a photographer
happened. I was a street kid brought up in the tenements of the East Bronx in New York
City and I lived in easy relationship with the energies and spontaneous craziness of life on
the streets there. And besides, my Pop was the unofficial mayor of our block, and so
hanging out with him and watching the way ordinary events played out in unexpected ways
was where I got my early education in the comedies and tragedies of everyday life. Pop
would frequently say to me in a quick, sotto voce aside, ‘See that guy there …,’ and boom,
the pratfall or strange encounter would happen and we would all be in stitches laughing
about someone’s funny mishap or minor disaster. How did he know? It seemed he could
always intuit and predict what was coming. He would often dreamily say, ‘Look at this,’
with the thrill of simply taking in the world’s wonder. These sudden alerts made me more
attentive to the world around me. I believe it’s this experience that gave me my curiosity
and the pleasure I take from simply looking at the world and believing it’s going to deliver
up some revelation.’
‘Movement is everything to me; it is Life itself, it traces the disappearing moment, and it,
along with Time, is the essence of the Photographic experience. And more than anything
else it was the reason I began to make photographs 50 years ago, just moments after
watching Robert Frank shoot a small publicity job for me. I was struck by the wonder of
the simple fact that he 'moved' while he was photographing people that were moving!
That was it! I quit my job, borrowed a camera, went out on the streets of New York City,
and never looked back. Now, after 50 years, I have assembled a retrospective pair of
books which have, at their core, movements I have witnessed in all their brief and fleeting
glory, moments of revelation and comedy, milliseconds of the tragic and the bittersweet,
epiphanies unexpected until they appeared before my eyes and woke me up!’

Joel Meyerowitz
Joel Meyerowitz è nato nel1938, nel Bronx, un quartiere che offriva lezioni quotidiane sulla divina commedia e sulle tragedie della vita umana. È convinto che sia stata questa fondamentale educazione di strada ad alimentare in lui il piacere di osservare le persone,
una sensibilità che è al centro della sua fotografia.
Dopo aver studiato arte, storia dell’arte e illustrazione medica alla Ohio State University,
all’inizio degli anni Sessanta ha lavorato come direttore artistico nella pubblicità. Nel
1962, Robert Frank fece le fotografie per un libretto di cui Joel aveva curato la grafica e fu
proprio osservando Frank lavorare che Meyerowitz scoprì che si possono scattare fotografie mentre sia il soggetto che il fotografo sono in movimento! La forza di questa intuizione gli fece lasciare immediatamente il suo lavoro, prendere in prestito una macchina
fotografica e andare per le vie di New York a scoprire com’era il mondo. Da allora non ha
mai abbandonato la strada.
Joel iniziò utilizzando pellicole a colori. Non conosceva niente di meglio e non sapeva che
i fotografi di quel tempo considerassero “arte” solo la fotografia in bianco e nero. Nei suoi
primi giorni in strada incontrò un giovane grafico, Tony Ray-Jones, che, come Joel, aveva
iniziato utilizzando il colore come il mezzo più naturale per fare fotografia e ambedue ne
studiavano le possibilità. Più tardi quello stesso anno Joel conobbe e diventò amico di
Garry Winogrand e insieme camminarono e lavorarono sulla Fifth Avenue ogni giorno per
quasi cinque anni.
Joel Meyerowitz è uno “street photographer” nella tradizione di Henri Cartier-Bresson e
Robert Frank, anche se lavora esclusivamente a colori. Come pioniere, ha avuto un ruolo
fondamentale nel far cambiare l'atteggiamento verso la fotografia a colori, dal rifiuto all’
accettazione quasi universale. Il suo primo libro "Cape Light" è considerato un classico
della fotografia a colori e ha venduto oltre 100.000 copie. Ha pubblicato altri diciassette
libri tra cui "Bystander: The History of Street Photography", e nel 2012 Phaidon ha pubblicato in due volumi la sua retrospettiva, "Taking My Time".
Meyerowitz non si è mai sentito vincolato a nessuna disciplina fotografica: "la fotografia di
strada è l'unico mezzo che non deve nulla alla pittura o alle altre arti plastiche, è puramente fotografica" Meyerowitz pensa che questo sia un punto di partenza naturale per
aprire una discussione sul mondo che ci circonda, e che le domande siano ciò che ci porta
a fare nuovi tipi di fotografie. Questa energia inquieta e questo approccio aperto al soggetto hanno dato vita ad un lavoro multiforme; Photographs From a Moving Car (una mostra personale al MoMA nel 1968), il suo progetto finanziato dal Guggenheim Fellowship,

heads, A Summer’s Day, Bay/Sky, Aftermath: The World Trade Center Archive, e molti altri, che si occupano di soggetti diversi; la luce, i ritratti, il paesaggio, le città e la storia,
tutto si discosta nettamente dalla street photography, eppure si riesce a vedere come il
suo occhio e le sue idee rimangono coerenti in tutto.
Nel 1995 Meyerowitz ha diretto e prodotto il suo primo film. Gli venne l’idea in maniera
spontanea, come per una foto di strada, quando sentì dire a suo padre:“Il mio problema è
che non arrivo mai al punto di arrivare al punto!”. In un istante capì che suo padre era in
difficoltà e gli stava chiedendo aiuto. Il risultato è POP, un diario intimo di un road trip
lungo tre settimane col figlio Sasha e il padre, Hy. Questa odissea ha come protagonista
un uomo di 87 anni malato di Alzheimer, imprevedibile, conoscitore della vita di strada e
spiritoso. È uno sguardo aperto sulla vecchiaia e una riflessione sul significato della memoria.
Pochi giorni dopo l’attacco dell’ 11 settembre 2001 al World Trade Center di New York,
Meyerowitz ha cominciato a creare un archivio di immagini sulla distruzione e ricostruzione di Ground Zero. È stato l’unico fotografo ad ottenere il libero accesso al sito. Il
World Trade Center Archive conta più di 8.000 immagini e sarà a disposizione per la ricerca e per mostre fotografiche a New York, nel Memorial Museum dedicato all’11 Settembre. Con le sue fotografie del World Trade Center Archive, Meyerowitz è anche stato invitato a rappresentare gli Stati Uniti all’ottava Biennale di Architettura di Venezia.
Adesso, al suo cinquantesimo anno di fotografia, il suo stile si è notevolmente semplificato. L’ultimo insieme di lavori; The Elements, è un approfondimento sui quattro fenomeni
che governano le nostre vite e una ricerca su un nuovo modo per descrivere il loro potere.
Lo scorso autunno sono stati pubblicati tre nuovi libri, Taking My Time la retrospettiva in
due volumi edita da Phaidon in occasione del cinquantesimo anno di attività; Provence:
lasting Impressions, a quattro mani con la moglie Maggie Barrett, pubblicato da Sterling,
e un libro sugli ultimi lavori di Paul Strand edito da Aperture. Meyerowitz è patrocinato
dal Guggenheim e sia il NEA (National Endowment of the Arts)che il NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities)gli hanno conferito dei premi. Il suo lavoro fa parte della collezione del Museum of Modern Art, del Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Art Institute of
Chicago, e di molti altri musei nel mondo.

Joel Meyerowitz
Joel Meyerowitz was born in the Bronx, in 1938 into a neighborhood that offered daily lessons in the divine comedy and tragedies of human behavior. He believes it was that basic
“street” education that nurtured his delight in human observation, a perception which is
at the heart of his photography.
After studying art, art history, and medical illustration at Ohio State University he worked
as an art director in advertising in the early 60’s. In 1962, Robert Frank made photographs
for a booklet Joel designed, and it was while watching Frank work that he discovered that
photographs could be made while both the photographer and the subject were in motion!
The power of this observation made him quit his job immediately; borrow a camera, and
go out onto the streets of New York to see what the world looked. He has been on the
streets ever since.
Joel began by using color film, not knowing any better, nor aware that photographers of
that era held that black and white was the ‘art’ of photography. On his first days on the
street he met a young graphic designer, Tony Ray-Jones, who, like Joel, began using color as the most natural means of making photographs, both of them exploring the ways in
which color worked. Later that year Joel met, and became friends with Garry Winogrand,
and together they walked and worked Fifth Avenue daily for nearly five years.
Meyerowitz is a “street photographer” in the tradition of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank, although he works exclusively in color. As an early advocate he became instrumental in changing the attitude toward color photography from one of resistance to
nearly universal acceptance. His first book Cape Light is considered a classic work of color photography and has sold over 100,000 copies. He has published seventeen other
books including Bystander: The History of Street Photography, and this year Phaidon will
publish his 2 volume retrospective book; Taking My Time.
While Meyerowitz never felt constrained by any one discipline of photography, he says,
“street photography was the only form of the medium that owed nothing to painting or the
other plastic arts, it is purely photographic.” He feels that such a starting point naturally
opens one to question the world around you, and questions are what lead us to make new
kinds of photographs. This restless energy and open approach to subject matter has produced such varied work as; Photographs From a Moving Car (a one man show at MoMA in
1968), his Guggenheim Fellowship project, Still Going: America During Vietnam, his work
with the large format, 8x10 view camera has resulted in such diverse books as; Cape
Light, St. Louis and The Arch, Redheads, A Summer’s Day, Bay/Sky, Aftermath: The World

age to feel like his eye and ideas remain consistent throughout.
In 1995 Meyerowitz produced and directed his first film. It came into being as spontaneously as a street photograph when Joel heard his father say, “the trouble with me is, I
never get to the point where I get to the point!” In an instant he recognized that his father
was lost and asking for help. The result is, POP, an intimate diary of a three-week road
trip he made with his son Sasha and his father, Hy. This odyssey has as its central character an unpredictable, street wise and witty 87-year-old with Alzheimer’s. It is both an
open-eyed look at aging and a meditation on the significance of memory.
Within a few days of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, Meyerowitz
began to create an archive of the destruction and recovery at Ground Zero. He was the only photographer granted unimpeded access to the site. The World Trade Center Archive
includes more than 8,000 images and will be available for research, and exhibition in New
York City at the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Meyerowitz was invited to represent the United
States at the 8th Venice Biennale for Architecture with his photographs from the World
Trade Center Archives.
Now, in his fiftieth year of making photographs, he has consistently turned toward greater
simplification. His latest body of work; The Elements, is an examination of the four phenomena that govern our lives and a search for a new way of describing their power.
This fall three new books are being published, Taking My Time, his fifty year, two volume,
retrospective book by Phaidon Press of London, Provence: Lasting Impressions, coauthored with his wife Maggie Barrett, and published by Sterling, and a book on the late
work of Paul Strand by Aperture. Meyerowitz is a Guggenheim fellow and a recipient of
both the NEA (National Endowment of the Arts) and NEH (National Endowment for the
Humanities) awards. His work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and many others world wide.
