PRESENTAZIONE
L
A GIOIA DEL VANGELO
di papa Francesco
Papa Francesco ci ha donato la sua
prima Esortazione Apostolica: "Evangelii
Gaudium".
Il tema centrale del documento e' la
gioia.
«Non lasciamoci rubare la gioia
dell'evangelizzazione… la gioia del
vangelo e' quella che niente e nessuno
potrà mai toglierci» (nn. 83-84).
È il Papa stesso che da' ragione del tema
scelto: «La gioia del vangelo riempie il
cuore e la vita intera di coloro che si incontrano con Gesù. Coloro che si lasciano
salvare da lui sono liberati dal peccato, dalla tristezza, dal vuoto interiore,
dall'isolamento» (n. 1).

Lo scopo del documento, rivolto ai fedeli cristiani, e' di «invitarli a una nuova
evangelizzazione marcata da questa gioia».
L'esortazione si sviluppa in cinque capitoli, che delineano il tema della gioia nella vita
di ogni cristiano e delle comunità cristiana: gioia nella evangelizzazione, nell'impegno
comunitario, nell'impegno sociale, nell'economia, nella pace, nel servizio privilegiato ai
poveri.
Riportiamo due brani sulle radici della gioia nell’evangelizzazione, invitando tutti a
leggere e meditare tutta l'Esortazione Apostolica.
«Come vorrei trovare le parole per incoraggiare una stagione evangelizzatrice più
fervorosa, gioiosa, generosa, audace, piena di amore fino in fondo e di vita
contagiosa» (n. 261).
«L'entusiasmo nella evangelizzazione si fonda su questa convinzione. Abbiamo a
disposizione un tesoro di vita e di amore che non può ingannare, il messaggio che non
può manipolare, ne' illudere. È una risposta che scende nel profondo dell'essere umano
e che può sostenerlo ed elevarlo. E' la verità che non passa di moda perché è in grado
di penetrare là' dove nient'altro può arrivare. La nostra tristezza infinita si cura soltanto
con un infinito amore» (n. 265).
Leggendo questa Esortazione vengono alla mente i nostri santi Alberto e Carla, che
hanno vissuto nella gioia pur in mezzo a tante difficoltà. Ancor oggi con la loro
testimonianza diffondono gioia nei cuori di chi li incontra. È ci dicono che vivere nella
gioia e' possibile.

ESPERIENZE
43°
ANNIVERSARIO DELLA NASCITA AL CIELO DI CARLA
Il 2 aprile 2013, martedì di Pasqua, si è celebrato il
43° Anniversario del passaggio da questa vita a quella del
Cielo della venerabile Carla Ronci.
La solenne concelebrazione Eucaristica è stata
presieduta dal vescovo di Rimini, Mons. Francesco
Lambiasi.
Riportiamo alcuni passaggi della stupenda omelia
del Vescovo.
«Il ricordo della Venerabile Carla nella luce della Pasqua
del Signore Risorto, nell’Anno della Fede voluto dal papa

Benedetto XVI, ci rivela che i Santi sono pagine di Vangelo in carne ed ossa». I Santi
sono il quinto Vangelo fatto da una sequenza di vita vissuta. Essi hanno vissuto tutta la
forza e la grazia del Vangelo.
In Maria Maddalena – “apostola degli
Apostoli, come la chiama Tommaso d’Aquino –
possiamo vedere Carla Ronci . Anche lei ci
racconta che conduceva una vita frivola,
banale, di poca preghiera e scrive: «Nessuno
credeva che non fossi più tornata al ballo, al
cinema, ecc.».
In Carla c’è stata una “chiamata” come in
tutti i Santi : vedi San Paolo, Francesco d’Assisi che
cambia completamente vita, così Carla: si è
sentita “chiamata” alla santità e dai 14 anni in su
c’è stata una perfetta sintonia con Gesù e i fratelli; non in file parallele, che non si
incontrano mai, la sua fede era senza complessi. Lei stessa si esprimeva così: «Ho la
certezza che Lui è presente in me, è Lui che agisce in me: questa è vera fede».
La Resurrezione è l’entrata di Gesù nell’eternità e l’eternità è contemporanea:
Gesù, con la risurrezione non si è reso irreperibile, Egli è qui, è presente a noi come lo
è in America o in Palestina; oggi e in tutti i tempi. «Lui mi dà la forza di essere fedele e
felice nella testimonianza attiva». Carla ha portato la usa fede in tutti ed in ciascuno
irradiava gioia e fede. Nella malattia testimoniò la sua fede: il dolore, anziché
abbatterla, la rese più limpida nella sua offerta.
I Santi ci fanno vedere dove siamo diretti , cioè alla Casa dei Padre, dove tutti
potremo fare festa con Maria nostra madre.
Il vescovo ha poi raccontato che molti anni fa trovò a Loreto una immagine di
Carla, dove lesse che aveva offerto la sua vita per i sacerdoti e le vocazioni
sacerdotali. Egli a quel tempo era Rettore di un seminario e quindi le affidò i
seminaristi, che allora erano molti. Oggi le vocazioni sacerdotali – dice il vescovo sono molto ridotte (a Rimini ci sono 12 seminaristi: una grazia!). C’è bisogno di
sacerdoti per animare le parrocchie: uniamoci nella preghiera – ha concluso il
vescovo – affinchè Carla ci ottenga che tanti giovani vengano “chiamati” al
sacerdozio nell’Anno della Fede, perché possano guidare le nostre comunità alla
fede.
Preghiamo anche per la beatificazione di Carla per il bene di tutti.

ARROCCHIA S. GAUDENZO
GRUPPO FAMIGLIE MARY
(RIMINI)
Mary: è il nome del Gruppo di famiglie della Parrocchia di S.
Gaudenzo di Rimini che ha voluto “incontrare” per una sera il
giovane beato Alberto Marvelli.
Vivere a Rimini, in centro, e anche da tanti anni, non
significa automaticamente conoscere Alberto (nemo propheta in
patria sua!); così, in un sabato sera di primavera, le coppie coi

figli ormai grandi, hanno invitato la prof.ssa Elisabetta Casadei per rivolgerle alcune
domande sulla vita e sulla spiritualità dell’ing. Marvelli.
Un incontro cordiale, naturalmente “familiare”, condito anche dai ricordi del
parroco don Aldo Amati, protagonista nel 2004 della beatificazione di Marvelli, in
qualità di Vicario generale della Diocesi riminese.

AGAZZI DEL VOMERO (NAPOLI)
Lavorare con i giovani è ovunque difficile
per la Chiesa, ma vi sono luoghi in cui è ancor
più arduo, come per esempio il quartiere
Vomero di Napoli.
I salesiani, tuttavia, hanno accolto la sfida
e uno di loro ha portato fino a Rimini, nel mese di
luglio, una trentina di ragazzi e ragazze per
conoscere Alberto Marvelli. Ha voluto presentare
loro una testimonianza “contro-corrente” allo
sballo, o “svacco”, che contraddistingue la
riviera di Rimini per la maggior parte dei giovani:
un beato, un educatore e un politico. Tre figure che non sono proprio di moda tra gli
adolescenti! Eppure, la sua sfida sembra vincerla il sacerdote salesiano: non certo per
le particolari capacità d’intrattenimento, ma per la forza della proposta che lancia:
vivere “al rialzo”. Accompagniamolo anche noi con la nostra preghiera.

I
N CAMMINO VOCAZIONALE DALLA LOMBARDIA
La Pastorale vocazionale salesiana della Lombardia ha inaugurato un percorso
vocazionale sulle orme del beato Marvelli. Facendo tappa nelle città in cui l’ing.
Marvelli ha speso la sua breve vita (Rimini, Bologna, Repubblica di San Marino, Ferrara),
oltre una ventina di adolescenti accompagnati dai loro educatori (sacerdoti e laici),
ha sostato qualche giorno a Rimini per visitare il Centro documentazione “A. Marvelli” e,
soprattutto, pregare presso la sua tomba in Sant’Agostino.
La tappa riminese ha consentito loro di incontrare Alberto “più da vicino” e
confrontarsi con la sua testimonianza di fede e di impegno civile, consumati proprio in
questa città e, possiamo dire, fino al sangue.

ELLIZZI (SA): MOSTRA DI A. MARVELLI
Dal 19 al 28 aprile 2013 la Parrocchia Sacro Cuore di
Gesù, in Bellizzi (SA), ha vissuto l'esperienza della Missione
Popolare. In comunione con la C hiesa universale la comunità
parrocchiale ha voluto vivere la Missione riscoprendo il dono della
Fede.
La scelta di avere tra noi la Mostra sul Beato Alberto
Marvelli e una sua reliquia è nata dal desiderio di far conoscere
ai giovani della Città la vita di un giovane beato. Una vita
profondamente felice perché in Dio, amato e riconosciuto nei
poveri del dopoguerra e in tutte le persone che incontrava.
Una vita dedicata allo studio e all'apostolato nell'Azione
Cattolica e non solo.
Un giovane impegnato nella politica e nel sociale, che in questo tempo di crisi
può suggerire tanto ai nostri politici e ai nostri amministratori.

IOVANI, VOI SIETE LA NOSTRA SPERANZA

Presentato alla GMG di Rio di Janeiro il volume che
racconta 10 giovani storie di “ordinaria santità”: Alberto
Marvelli, Carla Ronci, Carlo Acutis, Chiara Luce, Pier
Giorgio Frassati, Isabel Cristina, Jacques Fesch, Rolando
Rivi, Francisco Castellò e Isidoro Bakanja (6 italiani, tra i
quali ben 2 riminesi!).

immagini, foto, testi e narrazioni. È presentato da ben quattro vescovi brasiliani ed è
introdotto dalla vita di colui che ha fatto dei giovani il segno del suo pontificato:

LBERTO E CARLA. UN NUOVO PROGETTO DI DIFFUSIONE: IL BOOKCROSSING
Tutte le vie sono buone per far conoscere i nostri santi.
Il Comune di Montegrimano Terme (PU) ha avviato un
progetto di Bookcrossing, che consiste nel porre sul suo territorio 14
punti di scambio-libri.
Tutti possono prendere, portare a casa, leggere e
“liberare” da un’altra parte i libri che interessano: tutto
gratuitamente.
È una formula nuova in Italia, ma molto praticata
all’estero, ed è un modo di diffusione capillare, da
persona a persona.
Il Centro documentazione A. Marvelli ha aderito
all’iniziativa con un consistente numero di libri e opuscoli di
Alberto e Carla.

Ogni ultimo venerdì del mese alcuni “amici” di Alberto si riuniscono
in preghiera presso la sua tomba a Rimini. Tanti, in Italia e nel mondo,

Carissimi Amici,
mi chiamo Cristiano Capatti, ho 35 anni, sono un operatore sanitario, abito a Cesta
(Ferrara). Sono un catechiesta della mia parrocchia.
Vi scrivo per chiedervi la cortesia di poter ricevere la biografia grande del Beato
Alberto e un centinaio di immaginette di Alberto, più alcune medagliette e, se possibile,

Cervia (RA)
Caro don Fausto,
sono quel seminarista di Cervia che col seminario di Bologna è venuto l'estate 2011 a
scoprire la figura di Carla Ronci e di Alberto Marvelli. Mi sono innamorato di queste due
figure e le percepisco simili a me, per alcuni aspetti. Non certo per la santità.... :-).
Siccome in seminario ho scoperto una fortissima chiamata al laicato consacrato al
Signore, questi due "santi" mi sono preziosi, come i loro scritti. Essi sono, come disse
Papa Giovanni Paolo II a Roma per la GMG, vere "sentinelle del mattino". Cioè cristiani
con uno zelo ardente e instancabile per il Regno di Dio.
Faccio parte del bellissimo progetto (non è né un movimento né un'associazione)
delle Sentinelle del Mattino, nato per risvegliare i cristiani, ravvivare la loro fede e lo
slancio apostolico; evangelizziamo i “cristiani battezzati” attraverso innumerevoli
proposte e testimonianze di vita. E come esempi perfetti non posso che annoverare
queste due meravigliose persone.
Tramite i loro libri voglio farli conoscere alle persone, facendo loro scoprire la
bellezza di una vita di ordinaria santità, di zelo e fuoco per il Signore e il suo gregge.
Ogni cristiano può vivere come Carla e Alberto, basta non aver paura, lasciarsi andare
dal soffio dello Spirito Santo.
Grazie per avermi fatto conoscere questi due santi!

Gent.ma Graziella,
abbiamo avuto il piacere di conoscere lei e la storia della cara Carla a Milano
Marittima. Quanto da lei raccontato e, soprattutto, la lettura del libretto La vita è bella,
ma se ami è meravigliosa ci ha profondamente colpiti.

Non ci sembrava bello, alla fine della vacanza non andare a trovare Carla a
Torre Pedrera. Entrando nella cappella abbiamo respirato una profonda aria di pace e
il silenzio ci è stato amico per la riflessione. Abbiamo sentito una persona amica vicino a
noi e abbiamo affidato a Carla i nostri desideri e siamo certi che ci aiuterà.
Un abbraccio e sempre uniti nella preghiera

Bologna
Ero studente a Bologna. Prima dei voti e del sacerdozio, fui mandato a fare volontariato
in un cottolengo di Rimini. Non vi dico lo smarrimento, il perché di tante sofferenze e di
quella prova toccata a me.
Si facevano delle uscite e ci fu anche la visita alla Chiesa di Torre Pedrera. Visto e
letto che Carla aveva offerto la vita per i sacerdoti, affidai a lei la mia vocazione. Uscito
di Chiesa iniziò in me una serenità e pace interiore che, finito il periodo di volontariato,
ritornai a Bologna trasformato e deciso a pronunciare i santi voti e ricevere il
sacerdozio.
Ora sono un francescano felice!!

PRESENTATION
THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
by Pope Francis
Pope Francis has given us his first Apostolic Exhortation: Evangelii Gaudium.
The central theme of this document is joy.
«Let us not allow ourselves to be robbed of the joy of evangelization! ... The joy of the
Gospel is such that it cannot be taken away from us by anyone or anything» (nos. 83-84).
It is the same Pope who states by reason of the chosen theme: «The joy of the gospel
fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept His offer of
salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness, and loneliness» (no. 1).
Addressed to all the Christian faithful, the document’s purpose is to «to invite them to a
new evangelization marked by this joy».
The exhortation is divided into five chapters that outline the theme of joy in the life of
every Christian and the Christian community: joy in evangelization, communal
commitment, commitment to social work, to a just economy, to peace, and to the
preferential option for the poor.
Here are two passages on the roots of joy in evangelism, although we invite everyone
to read and meditate on the entire apostolic exhortation.
«How I long to find the right words to stir up enthusiasm for a new chapter of
evangelization full of fervour, joy, generosity, courage, boundless love, and attraction»
(n. 261)!
«Enthusiasm for evangelization is based on this conviction. We have a treasure of life
and love which cannot deceive, and a message which cannot mislead or disappoint. It
penetrates to the depths of our hearts, sustaining and ennobling us. It is a truth which is
never out of date because it reaches that part of us which nothing else can reach. Our
infinite sadness can only be cured by an infinite love» (n. 265).
Reading this Exhortation makes our own saints Alberto and Carla come to mind. They
lived in joy even in the midst of many difficulties. Even today, their witness spreads joy in
the hearts of those who encounter them. They show us that living joyfully is possible.

EXPERIENCES
43rd ANNIVERSARY OF VEN. CARLA’S DIES NATALIS
On 2 April 2013, Easter Tuesday, we celebrated the 43rd anniversary of Ven. Carla
Ronci’s passage from this life toward that in Heaven (this year, her dies natalis falls on the
fourth Wednesday in Lent).
The solemn eucharistic celebration was presided over by Bishop Francesco
Lambiasi of Rimini.

Here are some passages from the stupendous homily of His Excellency.
«The memory of the Venerable Carla in the light of Easter of the Risen Lord in the Year
of Faith commissioned by Pope Benedict XVI shows us that the Saints are the pages of
the Gospel in flesh and bone». The saints are the fifth Gospel which is made by the
events of the lives they lived. They have lived all the strength and grace of the Gospel.
In Mary Magdalene – “apostle of the Apostles,” as St. Thomas Aquinas calls her –
we can see Carla Ronci. She also tells us the reality of leading a life that is frivolous,
banal, and of little prayer. To this end, she wrote: «Nobody believes I have not returned
to dancing, to the cinema, etc. [i.e., a life consumed by the search for an ultimately
empty, unsatisfying excitement]».
Having recognized the fruitlessness of such an existance, Carla discerned a
“call,” as did all the Saints. Look at Ss. Paul and Francis of Assisi. Both of them
completely changed their lives. So we see the same with Carla. She felt “called” to
holiness, and by the age of 14, she had a perfect harmony with Jesus and all Christian
brethren; her faith was devoid of complexes or hang-ups. She expressed it like this: «I
have certainty that He is present in me, it is He Who acts in me: this is true faith ».
The Resurrection is the entrance of Jesus into eternity and eternity is not before or
after the Resurrection but simultaneous for us with it: With the Resurrection, Jesus is not
rendered unobtainable, He is here. He is as present to us as He is in America or
Palestine, today and in every age. «He gives me the strength to be faithful and happy in
active witness». Carla led faith practices for each and everyone, radiating joy and faith.
In sickness she witnessed to her faith: her pain, instead of demolishing her faith, rendered
its offering more clear.
The saints show us where we’re headed, that is, the House of the Father, where
we can all celebrate with Mary our mother.
The bishop then recounted how many years ago, he found a picture of Carla at
Loreto, where he read that she had offered her life for priests and vocations to the
priesthood. He was at that time rector of a seminary and therefore entrusted with the
seminarians, who were then many. Today the number of priestly vocations, said the
bishop, has greatly dropped (at Rimini, however, there are 12 seminarians: what a
grace!). There is need for priests to animate their parishes: let us unite in prayer, the
bishop concluded, so that Carla can obtain for us young people who find themselves
“called” to the priesthood in the Year of Faith, so they can, in turn, guide our
community to faith.
We also pray for the beatification of Carla for the good of all.

ST. GAUDENTIUS PARISH (RIMINI)
GRUPPO FAMIGLIE MARY (THE FAMILY GROUP “MARY”)
Mary: This is the name of a group of families at St. Gaudentius Church in Rimini
that wanted to “encounter” Bl. Alberto Marvelli at one of its evening meetings.
Although situated in downtown Rimini, and despite the group’s having met for
many years, that doesn’t automatically mean its members knew about Alberto (no
prophet is acceptable in his own country!). So on a Saturday evening last spring, couples
with grown children invited Professor Elizabeth Casadei to ask her some questions about
Marvelli’s life and spirituality.

The meeting had a cordial and informal air, and it was peppered with memories
of the parish priest Fr. Aldo Amati, a key figure in the 2004 beatification of Marvelli given
his role as vicar general for the diocese.
CHILDREN OF VOMERO (NAPLES)
Working with young people is difficult for the Church no matter the location, but
there are places where it is especially difficult, such as the Vomero district of central
Naples.
The Salesians, however, took up the challenge and this led one of them to come
to Rimini with thirty boys and girls to learn about Alberto Marvelli this past July. The
majority of these young people think living on Rimini’s Riviera means a life in the fast lane,
a life lived with abandon. Their guide wanted to present Alberto’s countercultural
witness as a blessed, an educator, and a politician (none of these three roles are
exactly fashionable among teenagers!). Still, the Salesian priest seems to have been
victorious in this challenge. This wasn’t because of his particular capacity to entertain.
Rather, it was because of the strength of what he proposed to them: Living not for the
here and now but the life to come. Let us accompany them with our prayers.
IN VOCATIONAL JOURNEY FROM LOMBARDY
The Salesian Vocation Ministry of the Lombardy region has launched a vocational
process in the footsteps of Bl. Alberto. Making stops in the cities where Marvelli spent
his short life (Rimini, Bologna, the Republic of San Marino, Ferrara), more than two dozen
teenagers and their teachers (priests and laity) stayed a few days in Rimini to visit the “A.
Marvelli” Documentation Center and, most importantly, to pray at his tomb in Church of
Sant’Agostino (St. Augustine).
The Rimini leg of the trip allowed them to more closely “meet” Alberto and
engage his witness of faith and civic engagement, consumed in this very city and, we
can say, “unto the shedding of blood” (Heb. 12:4).
BELLIZZI (SALERNO): EXHIBITION OF ALBERTO MARVELLI
Between 19-28 April 2013, Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, in Bellizzi (SA), had the
experience of the Missionare Popolare (People’s Mission, akin to a parish mission, but
more extensive). In communion with the universal Church, the parish community has
wanted to experience the Mission by rediscovering the gift of Faith.
The decision to have among us the Exhibition on Blessed Alberto Marvelli and
his relic was born of a desire to introduce young people of the city to the life of a young
blessed. It was a profoundly happy life because in God, he loved and recognized Him in
the post-war poor and all the people he met.
Marvelli’s was a life dedicated to study and the Catholic Action apostolate and
not just that.

suggest so much to our political leaders and our administrators.

PASTORAL ASSISTANCE
YOUNG PEOPLE, YOU ARE OUR HOPE
(Bl. John Paul II)
Presented at the World Youth Day in Rio di Janeiro, this book tells the stories of 10
young people and their “ordinary holiness”: Alberto Marvelli, Carla Ronci, Carlo Acutis,
Chiara Luce, Pier Giorgio Frassati, Isabel Cristina, Jacques Fesch, Rolando Rivi, Francisco
Castellò, and Isidore Bakanja (6 Italians, of whom two were from Rimini!).
Edited by Anderson Wagner, himself a young adult and a student of law and
philosophy in Petrolina, Brazil, it is a light little book, only 135 pages, colorful, and full of
images, photos, texts and narratives. The introduction was written by no less than four
Brazilian bishops, and the first story is that of the man who made youth the mark of his
pontificate: John Paul II. It is a shame it is only available in Portugese!

A NEW WAY TO SPREAD ALBERTO’S & CARLA’S STORIES: THE BOOKCROSSING
All ways are good in order to know our saints.
The city of Monte Grimano Terme in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino (roughly
20 miles/32 kms. from Rimini) has inaugurated a project called the Bookcrossing, which
consists in placing within its boundaries 14 book sharing stations.
Everyone can take, bring home, read, and “liberate” from a different place the
books that interest them: all for free.
This is a new phenomenon in Italy, although it is widely practiced abroad, and is a
way to accomplish the widespread distribution of literature, from person to person.
The A. Marvelli Documentation Centre has joined this initiative by donating a large
number of books and pamphlets about Alberto and Carla.

Dear Msgr. Fausto:
I am that seminarian from Cervia who came with the Bologna seminary during the
summer of 2011 to learn about the persons of Carla Ronci and Alberto Marvelli. I’m in
love with these two figures and perceive them as being similar to me, in some respects.
Certainly not for the sanctity.... :-).
Since I discovered in the seminary a very strong calling to being a layman
consecrated to the Lord, these two “saints” are precious to me, like their writings. In the
words of Pope John Paul II in Rome for World Youth Day in 2000, they are true
“watchmen of the morning”. In other words, they were Christians with a burning and
untiring zeal for the Kingdom of God.
I am part of a wonderful project (it is neither a movement nor an association) called
the Sentinels of the Morning, created to awaken Christians, revive their faith and
apostolic zeal, and evangelize the “baptized Christians” through countless proposals and
testimonies of life. And as perfect examples, I cannot but count these two wonderful
people.
Through their stories, I want to introduce people to them, helping others to discover
the beauty of a life of ordinary holiness, of zeal and fire for the Lord and His flock. Every
Christian can live like Carla and Alberto. Just do not be afraid. Rather, let yourself go by
the breath of the Holy Spirit.

Dearest Graziella,
We have had the pleasure of knowing you and the story of the beloved Carla in
Milano Marittima [ed. note: This city is located near Cervia]. What you recounted, and
most importantly, reading the booklet La vita è bella, ma se ami è meravigliosa [i.e, “Life
is beautiful, but if you love, it is wonderful”] have deeply impressed us.
By the end of our vacation, it seemed wrong to not go find Carla at Torre Pedrera
[ed. note: A suburb of Rimini and Carla’s birthplace, the village of Torre Pedrera is a
prime holiday destination]. Entering the chapel, we breathed a deep air of peace and
silence which were conducive for reflection. We felt a friendly person near us, and we
have entrusted to Carla our desires. We are confident she will help us.
As much as you told us, above all, the reading of the booklet "The life is beautiful, but if
you love it is Marvelous" touched us deeply. at the end of our vacation, to not go see
Carla at Torre Pedrera. Entering into the Cappella we breathed in a profound air of
peace and the silence was a friend to us for reflection.

Bologna
I was a seminarian in Bologna. Before taking my religious vow and receiving
ordination, I was sent to do volunteer work in a cottolengo in Rimini. [ed note: For those
unfamiliar with them, since they barely exist in the US and other English speaking
countries, a “cottolengo” is officially known as a “Little House of Divine Providence.”
Prominent in Italy and other countries, these are a ministry of care consisting of homes,
hospitals, etc., for the sick and the poor, and were established by the priest St. Joseph
Benedict Cottolengo (1786-1842).] I will not tell you my bewilderment at the great
suffering I saw there and how that evidence touched me.
We made outings, one of which was a visit to the church in Torre Pedrera. I saw
and read that Carla had offered her life for priests, so I entrusted my vocation to her.
Coming out of the church initiated in me such a serenity and interior peace that, after
finishing my volunteer work, I returned to Bologna transformed and decided to
pronounce holy vows and receive the priesthood.
Now I am a happy Franciscan!!
