MISSIONE ARTISTICA:
L’obiettivo del LANCIANO INTERNATIONAL GUITAR SEMINAR 2016 Edition, è quello di promuovere la formazione
chitarristica solistica e d’insieme. Docenti di fama internazionale svolgeranno lezioni individuali e collettive durante i sei giorni del
seminario. Un concerto dei migliori partecipanti solisti e in ensemble chiuderà la manifestazione. L’esperienza della musica d’insieme è
indispensabile per la formazione completa di uno strumentista e riveste un valore particolare soprattutto per coloro che, per le peculiarità
dello strumento e del repertorio, sono portati a dedicare la maggior parte del loro tempo all’attività solistica, com’è il caso dei chitarristi.
Inoltre, la capacità di suonare in assieme e in diverse formazioni, si rivela cifra distintiva per entrare nell’attuale panorama lavorativo
musicale. L’opportunità di condividere un periodo di studio con colleghi dello stesso strumento, per di più, offre la possibilità di
scambiare idee, contatti, esperienze e di favorire la nascita di nuove collaborazioni. Altro importante obiettivo del Lanciano
International Guitar Seminar è quello di promuovere scambi culturali internazionali tra musicisti e istituzioni italiane e straniere. Al fine
di promuovere la collaborazione internazionale, Lanciano International Guitar Seminar, offre uno sconto sulla quota di partecipazione
agli studenti stranieri residenti all’estero. Inoltre, mette a disposizione dei partecipanti borse di studio per attività formative del valore
complessivo di circa 1500 euro. In particolare, offre agli studenti più meritevoli due borse di studio per la partecipazione alla XIV
edizione del New York Guitar Seminar (2017) presso Mannes College of Music e altre borse di studio per la partecipazione ai corsi
organizzati nell’ambito della 46° Estate Musicale Frentana (2017).

repertorio.

ARTISTIC MISSION:
The mission of the Lanciano International Guitar Seminar is to promote high-level solo and ensemble/chamber music training for
guitarists. Internationally renowned professionals will teach master classes for soloists and ensembles during the six days of the Seminar.
A final concert featuring selected participants in solo and ensemble performances will conclude the event. The benefits of successful
chamber music experiences are enormous, especially for instrumentalists who devote so much of their time and efforts to solo pursuits.
Moreover, chamber music skills are necessary to be competitive in the music job market. A full-immersion guitar education week gives the
opportunity to share new ideas, contacts and experiences. Also, it enhances the development of new collaborations. Another important
goal of the Lanciano International Guitar Seminar is to promote international cultural exchanges between Italian and international
guitarists and institutions. To boost the international exchange stature of this new endeavor, international students will receive a discount
on the tuition fee. Moreover, two top participants will receive full scholarships ($575 value each) to the 2017 New York Guitar at
Mannes College of Music (provided by the New York Guitar Seminar). And two or more other top participants will receive full
scholarships to one of the master classes organized by the Estate Musicale Frentana in 2016.

FACULTY BIOS
Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo
Hailed as a “revelation to hear” by The Washington Post, the Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo’s phenomenal musicianship places them solidly at the top of
their field. For 35 years, their innovative programming, matchless technique and ensemble precision, combined with their commitment to expanding the
repertoire for guitar duo contribute to their standing as one of America’s top ensembles. Newman and Oltman’s concert tours have taken them to world
cultural capitals and premier venues across five continents. Duo has demonstrated extraordinary stylistic breadth in their collaborations with such diverse
artists as author Frank McCourt (“Angela’s Ashes”), composer/conductor Marvin Hamlisch and the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops, mezzo-soprano Frederica
von Stade, pianist Clarice Assad, and fiddler Eileen Ivers. Through their groundbreaking New Music Commissioning Program, Newman & Oltman have
built a unique repertoire of works for two guitars by composers such as Paul Moravec, Augusta Reed Thomas, Lowell Liebermann, Dušan Bogdanovic,
Arthur Kampela, and Roberto Sierra. Their artistry has also been captured on nearly a dozen other acclaimed recordings and has been recognized by grants
and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America and ASCAP, among others. Highlights of this season include the world
premiere of “Concierto Buenos Aires” composed for the Duo by Nuevo Tango master Daniel Binelli with l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Reims in France and
with the Virginia Symphony (JoAnn Falletta, music director). The Duo has served as ensemble-in-residence at New York’s Mannes College the New
School for Music since 1987.
Michael and Laura are founders and artistic directors of the New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes

Isabella Abbonizio
Isabella Abbonizio is an Italian classical guitarist and musicologist born in Lanciano (CH) and currently based in New York City. Her passion for music
manifested early in her life and brought her to pursue both instrumental and musicological studies. After studying at the G. B. Martini Music Conservatory
of Bologna (Italy) she received the Ph.D. in musicology at the Tor Vergata University of Rome. Currently she is a Visiting Scholar at New York
University's Centre for European and Mediterranean Studies. As a guitarist Isabella studied under the guidance of Griselda Ponce de Leòn and attended
master classes with Roland Dyens, Frédéric Zigante, Piero Bonaguri, Eugenio Becherucci, Martha Masters and Joao Luiz. She performs both as soloist and
in chamber ensembles. Isabella is a member of the Contemporanea Guitar Duo (I. Abbonizio/J. Olson) and of the Brooklyn Guitar Quartet (with L.
Frandsen, C. Cuestas, J. Miller). Her repertoire is focused on 20th and 21st century music and she premiered a number of works for guitar. As a
musicologist, she realized the first extensive analysis on the guitar works of Maurice Ohana (1913-1992), published in the journal Il Fronimo. Her current
research interests focus on 20th century Italian and French music, musical exoticism, Italian music and politics, colonial/postcolonial studies and music
education. Her works are presented at international conferences, including International Society of Musicology and Italian Society of Musicology. She gives
lectures in academic and cultural institutions, including Guitar Foundation of America and New York University, and she publishes in international
scholarly journals. Isabella is also a professional music and guitar teacher with more than ten years of teaching experience in public and private schools in
Italy and USA. Presently she is on the faculty of the Harlem School of the Arts. A guitar promoter, she is the North American Correspondent for the
