Autore
Lyman Frank Baum nacque a Chittenango nello Stato di New York nel
1856 da una famiglia di origine tedesca. Fin da bambino manifestò la
sua creatività e la sua sfrenata immaginazione, doti che non cessò mai
di mettere a frutto, coltivando svariati interessi ed esercitando mille
professioni. Nel 1899 inaugurò la sua collaborazione con l’illustratore
William Wallace Denslow con Father Goose: His Book, una raccolta di
filastrocche e nonsense per bambini. Nel 1900 i due pubblicarono The
Wonderful Wizard of Oz che ebbe un successo travolgente e divenne un
best seller nei due anni successivi. Per tutta la vita continuò a scrivere
romanzi ambientati nel mondo di Oz (quattordici fino alla sua morte, più
tre pubblicati postumi), mentre pubblicò sotto pseudonimo il resto della
sua prolifica produzione letteraria. Morì a Glendale, in California, nel
1919.

Note di regia
Il viaggio, l’alternanza tra sogno e realtà: il giovane regista Edward Johnson
(Peter Pan) accetta la sfida di trasmettere agli spettatori le tematiche
principali del racconto di L. Frank Baum in modo semplice, ma allo
stesso tempo accattivante. A questo scopo è stata ideata una scenografia
multifunzionale, composta da una struttura circolare che gira su se stessa
introducendo di volta in volta un ambiente diverso. Il musical inizia e
si conclude nella prateria in cui sorge la casa degli zii di Dorothy: uno
spazio sobrio e realistico, in netto contrasto con il mondo magico in cui si
svolgono le scene centrali e in cui prevale un design che ricorda lo stile dei
cartoni animati. I personaggi mantengono le caratteristiche con cui sono
universalmente conosciuti e i vivaci costumi, curati in ogni dettaglio, ne
sottolineano ancor di più l’originalità e li rendono inconfondibili. Dall’inizio
alla fine dello spettacolo, composizioni musicali inedite si alternano a brani
famosi: i performer madrelingua li interpretano dal vivo, esibendosi anche
in coreografie appositamente studiate per intrattenere il giovane pubblico
e sottolineare l’evolversi delle vicende. La comprensione della storia è
garantita anche dalla scelta didattica di adottare una recitazione chiara ed
espressiva, nello stile esclusivo di PALKETTOSTAGE.
Trama
Durante un tornado la piccola Dorothy e il suo cane Totó vengono
trasportati in volo in un paese sconosciuto (la Terra Blu dei Munchkins),
dove è in corso una guerra fra streghe (due buone, quella del Nord e del
Sud, e due cattive, quella dell’Est e dell’Ovest). Eliminata per un caso
fortuito la strega cattiva dell’Est, Dorothy ne eredita le scarpette rosse
e diventa amica della strega buona del Nord che per aiutarla a tornare a
casa, le consiglia di rivolgersi al potente Mago di Oz. Così Dorothy e Totó
si mettono in viaggio alla volta della Città di Smeraldo, dove risiede il
grande Mago. Lungo la via si uniscono a loro l’Uomo di Paglia, l’Uomo di
Latta e il Leone codardo. Ognuno di essi vede, infatti, nell’aiuto del grande
Mago l’unica possibilità di realizzare il proprio desiderio. Numerose sfide
e pericolose avventure aspettano Dorothy e la sua bizzarra comitiva, in
una girandola di incontri e magie. Fino a che la protagonista non si renderà
conto che la chiave per realizzare i propri sogni è sempre stata in suo
possesso...

A great prairie in Kansas.
Emmy comes out of the house.
She puts the cakes on a table at the front of the house.
Then Henry, Dorothy and Toto.

Em (looking at Henry). Henry, what is the matter with you?

Henry (stops). This grey sky does make me worried Emmy.

Em. If the clouds bring some rain I shall be perfectly happy.
Em. Se queste nuvole ci portano un po’ di pioggia io sarò solo contenta.
Henry. Yes… maybe you are right. There is no need to worry. (He moves
closer to the table.) What a delicious smell.
Henry. Sì… forse hai ragione. Non è il caso di preoccuparsi. (Si avvicina al
tavolo.) Che profumino.
He takes a piece of cake.
Prende un pezzo di focaccia.
Em. Be careful, excuse me! Your hands are dirty! (She looks around.) Do
you know where Dorothy is?
Em. Stai attento, scusa! Hai le mani sporche! (Guarda in giro.) Sai dov’è
Dorothy?
Henry. With her dog, as usual. (He calls.) Dorothy! Dorothy!
Henry. Con il suo cane, come al solito. (Chiama.) Dorothy! Dorothy!
Dorothy (off). I’m just coming!
Dorothy (fuori scena). Arrivo tra un secondo!
Henry (looks at the sky again). Rain or no rain, the sky is definitely getting
darker.
Henry (guarda di nuovo in cielo). Pioggia o non pioggia, il cielo sta
diventando decisamente più buio.
Em (looks at the sky). Come on… sit down. Look... the animals are quiet and
you know very well that they can sense something when a tornado is coming.
Em (guarda il cielo). Dai… siediti. Guarda... gli animali sono calmi e tu lo sai
benissimo che loro sentono qualcosa quando un ciclone arriva.
Dorothy arrives with Toto in her arms.
Dorothy arriva con Totò in braccio.
Dorothy. Be quiet… quiet... calm down Toto. Aunt Em… you have baked
my favourite bread! Mm… yummy.
Dorothy. Tranquillo… tranquillo... calmati Totò. Zia Em… hai fatto le mie
focacce preferite! Mm… buono.

Em (taking the cakes back). You cannot have anything until you wash your
hands…
Em (riprendendo le focacce). Non avrete niente finché non vi lavate le
mani…
Henry. It has started to rain. I can feel it.
Henry. Ha iniziato a piovere. Lo sento.
Em. Good.
Em. Bene.
Dorothy. I like it best the moment when the rain stops… when you can see
the sun’s rays shine through the clouds. It is a magical moment.
Dorothy. A me piace di più il momento quando finisce la pioggia… quando

She sings: “Somewhere over the rainbow”.

Henry. Emmy, Dorothy… I can sense the tornado coming. Look… look…
the grass over there is bending in the wind!
Henry. Emmy, Dorothy… riesco a sentire il tornado che arriva. Guardate…
guardate… quell’erba si china a terra con il vento!

Dorothy. A tornado? Oh no. Where is it Uncle Henry?
Dorothy. Un tornado? Oh no. Dov’è zio Henry?
Em. Dorothy, perhaps it is better to go inside the house.
Em. Dorothy, forse è meglio entrare in casa.
Dorothy. Sure, Aunt Em.
Dorothy. Certo, zia Em.
The wind is howling. Toto runs away to hide.
Il vento ulula. Totò corre a nascondersi.
Henry. Quick Dorothy, Emmy… Run to the cellar! I will lock the cows and
horses in the barn!
Henry. Presto Dorothy, Emmy… Correte subito in cantina! Io vado a chiudere
il bestiame nella stalla!
Dorothy. Toto? Toto… where are you?
Dorothy. Totò? Totò… dove sei?
Em. Dorothy, do not look for the dog!

Dorothy runs towards the house.
The wind makes the house whirl around twice
and Dorothy loses her balance and falls.
Dorothy. Toto? Toto? What is happening? I am flying! I am flying!

Dorothy is asleep on the stairs.
Then Glinda.
Dorothy sta dormendo sulle scale.
Poi Glinda.
Dorothy. How long have I been asleep? What a bad dream!!! (She sees
beautiful scenery all around the house: trees full of fruit, flowers everywhere,
colourful birds etc.) Wow! What has happened to our garden? (She shouts.)
Aunt Em… Uncle Henry… Toto… where are you? Ah, there you are Toto.
Where are we? …We are not in Kansas anymore…
Dorothy. Quanto tempo ho dormito? Che brutto sogno!!! (Vede intorno
alla casa un luogo bellissimo: alberi carichi di frutta, fiori ovunque, uccelli
variopinti etc.) Wow! Cosa è successo al nostro giardino? (Grida.) Zia Em …
zio Henry… Totò… dove siete? Ah, sei qui Totò. Dove siamo? …Non siamo
più nel Kansas…
Suddenly Glinda, the Witch of the North, appears.
All’improvviso appare Glinda, la Strega del Nord.
Glinda. You are welcome, my sweet fairy.
Two inhabitants of this place, called Munchkin, come out from behind the
trees and get closer timidly. Toto barks a little.
Glinda. Sii la benvenuta, dolcissima fata.
Due abitanti di questo posto chiamati Munchkin spuntano da dietro gli alberi
e si avvicinano timidamente.Totò abbaia un po’.

The Munchkins. Hello!
I Munchkin. Ciao!
Dorothy. Oh! You startled me. Hello and who are you?
Dorothy. Oh! Mi avete colto di sorpresa. Ciao, e voi chi siete?
Munchkin 1. We are the Munchkins and we live in this city.
Munchkin 1. Siamo i Munchkin e abitiamo in questa città.
Munchkin 2. And what kind of witch are you? Are you a good witch? Or a
bad witch?

Dorothy. But I’m neither a fairy nor a witch at all, I assure you. I am
Dorothy, an ordinary girl and this is my dog Toto.

Glinda. My dear, you may not be a fairy, but we are extremely grateful to
you because you have killed the bad Witch of the East.

Munchkin 1. Yes, you are our hero!

Dorothy. I am afraid, you are wrong: I have never killed anyone.

Glinda. Not you, your house. Just take a look! Can you see those small
slippers sticking out from under the house? Well, they belonged to the bad
Witch of the East.

Dorothy looks there and cries full of fear.

the tornado is to blame. And now, what shall we do?

Munchkin 1. Nothing at all.

Glinda takes the slippers from under the house and goes toward Dorothy.

must be careful though Dorothy, if the bad Witch of the West knows you have
these, she will come after you to get them back.
Glinda. Ecco, sono tue adesso Dorothy. Loro hanno dei poteri magici. Ma

Munchkin 1. They say that these slippers have a very strong power.

Then the Tin Man joins in.

follow it wherever it goes.

darkness falls.

The Witch flies away with Dorothy.

Everyone, except Dorothy, is on the ground and in a bad condition.

Dorothy is standing still in the middle of the kitchen.
The Witch of the West is going around her.

Witch of the West. I see you are wearing my magic slippers… Give them back
to me immediately. I am the only one who knows how to use them. (The Witch
tries to touch the slippers, but she is struck by lightning.) I see you are protected.
But this will not help you. Ha-ha-ha. You will have to obey me entirely, if you do
not want to come to a bitter end like your stupid friends. Do you understand?
Strega dell’Ovest. Vedo che indossi le mie scarpette magiche … Ridammele
subito. Sono l’unica che sa come usarle. (La strega cerca di toccare le

Guardiano/Oz. Cari amici, vi prego non rivelate a nessuno chi è veramente il

Dorothy. So nobody knows who you are?
Dorothy. Nessuno sa chi sei?
Guardian/Oz. Nobody. By pretending to be the Guardian I could prepare
in advance for anyone who wanted to see me. I have always been able to
deceive everybody so far... You see… I am an inventor and I built a balloon
several years ago. I wanted to show everybody my invention. The whole
city came to see me flying… Everything was going on well until, a tornado
arrived, all of a sudden, and carried me up to this land. When the inhabitants
saw me coming down the clouds they believed I was a wizard. They were so
kind to me I did not want to disappoint them.
Guardiano/Oz. Nessuno. Fingendomi il Guardiano potevo preparare
in anticipo quelli che volevano vedermi. Finora sono sempre riuscito a
ingannare tutti... Vedete… io sono un inventore e tanti anni fa ho costruito
una mongolfiera. Volevo mostrare a tutti la mia invenzione. È arrivata tutta
la città a vedere come volavo… Andava tutto bene finché, all’improvviso è
arrivato un ciclone che mi ha trasportato fino a questo paese. Quando gli
abitanti mi hanno visto scendere dalle nuvole hanno creduto che fossi un
mago. Loro erano così gentili con me che non volevo deluderli.
Dorothy. Have you been tricking people all this time?
Dorothy. Hai mentito per tutto questo tempo?
Guardian/Oz. Yes. I am very ashamed.

courageous immediately.

Lion. Yes… I feel strong and courageous. The most courageous in the world.

Scarecrow. Oh, thank you. I have now become wise too.

it very well.

Scarecrow. Thank you! Well, as I am the governor I can appoint you the
Great Protector of the city and you, Tin Man, I appoint you the Great Poet
of the city.

The Guardian/Oz is sitting inside the basket under the balloon. Dorothy is
saying goodbye to her friends.

They embrace, forgetting the ropes which keep the balloon on the ground. The
balloon begins to rise into the air with Oz inside.
Dorothy. Come back, Oz! I want to go with you!
Guardian/Oz. I cannot. I am sorry. Adieu!!!
Lion. I will go after him and try to get the balloon back to the ground. Come
back!
Si abbracciano dimenticando i fili che tengono la mongolfiera a terra.
La mongolfiera si alza insieme ad Oz.
Dorothy. Torna indietro, Oz! Voglio venire con te!

Dorothy is asleep on the stairs as in the 2nd scene.
Then Em.

Henry. My child! Emmy, Dorothy is alive! See how she sleeps peacefully. It
is incredible! The wind did not carry her away.

Toto jumps into Dorothy’s arms waking her up.
Totò salta in braccio a Dorothy svegliandola.
Dorothy. Toto! Aunt Em! Uncle Henry! I am back home!
Emmy enters.
Em. Dorothy! Back home? And where have you been, my child?
Dorothy. Oh, I had a wonderful journey… I have just come back from the
land of Oz. And these slippers brought me home. Look!
Dorothy points to her feet, but the slippers have disappeared.
Dorothy. Oh! The slippers have disappeared. But I had them on… I am sure.
She looks around for them.
Henry. Dorothy, you have got a wonderful imagination.
Em. And we love you for that.
Dorothy. Totò! Zia Em! Zio Henry! Sono tornata a casa!
Emmy entra.
Em. Dorothy! Tornata? E dove sei stata, bambina mia?
Dorothy. Oh, ho fatto un viaggio straordinario… Vengo dal regno di Oz. E
queste scarpette mi hanno portato a casa. Guarda!
