definizione, Merano ha un carattere unico, plasmato sulla qualità della vita, la vocazione al benessere e all'ospitalità, l'eleganza. Le vette alpine che la circondano annunciano

Famous as the “Pearl of the Alps”, the town was once known as the “Nice of Tyrol”.
Merano has a unique character that defies categorisation, focused on quality of life,
wellbeing, hospitality and elegance. The surrounding Alpine peaks form the backdrop to

S'indugia, passeggiando, sulle Promenade lungo il fiume Passirio, sulle quali affaccia
il liberty del Kurhaus. Il palazzo è membro del circuito Historic Conference Centres
of Europe, ed è la punta di diamante che rende Merano un rinomato centro MICE. Il
sentiero di Sissi conduce, sulle orme dell'Imperatrice Elisabetta, ai famosi Giardini di

Enjoy strolling on the Promenade along the River Passer past the Art Nouveau style of the
Kurhaus. The building is a member of the Historic Conference Centres of Europe circuit,
and is the crown jewel that makes Merano a popular MICE centre. The Sissi trail follows
the footsteps of the Empress Elisabeth past villas and castles to the famous Gardens of
Trauttmansdorff Castle. The eyes of the soul discover landscapes along the Tappeiner
Path, a picturesque balcony overlooking the valley of the River Adige, or the “Waalwege”,
paths that follow the ancient irrigation channels through the meadows, orchards and
woodlands of the surrounding area. It is this natural heritage, preserved and enhanced
with an awareness of the surrounding beauty, that led the “Association Européenne du
Fleurissement et du Paysage” to award Merano the Gold Award in the international
Entente Florale Europe competition.

dell'arte moderna (Merano Arte), il mondo femminile nei secoli (Museo delle Donne),
gli sviluppi del turismo altoatesino (Touriseum). Arte e cultura nell'alveo della storia
della città caratterizzano il nuovo Palais Mamming Museum: la presenza di pezzi “esotici” e curiosi tra cui una mummia egiziana, la collezione di armi del Sudan dell'avventuriero Slatin Pascha e una maschera funebre di Napoleone, rivelano la centralità di
Merano nelle vicende più disparate.
The town’s cultural melange is reflected in the numerous museums that relate the trends
in modern art (Merano Arte), the world of women through the centuries (Women’s Museum), or the story of tourism in South Tyrol (Touriseum). Art and culture also characterise
the new Palais Mamming Museum: there are “exotic” items and curiosities including an
Egyptian mummy, a collection of weapons from Sudan from the adventurer Slatin Pasha
and a death mask of Napoleon, all showing the central role of Merano in the most disparate events.

The Merano Thermal Baths in the centre are an icon of relaxation and wellbeing, with
numerous pools and saunas, treatments in the “Spa & Vital Center” using raw materials
from South Tyrol (honey, grapes, edelweiss, etc.), and a fitness centre. Sports enthusiasts
will be able to indulge their passion while on holiday at the Meranarena, with skating,
tennis and the new Lido swimming pool, while those who prefer shopping can savour the
Portici (arcades) and their environs, a genuine centre of commerce, as well as the weekly
markets, including farmers’ markets. As regards gastronomic matters, the region’s mixed
Alpine and Mediterranean identity is reflected in the combination of traditional flavours
and contexts with others of a more elegant, international and refined nature.

Primavera
Spring
La natura si risveglia dal letargo e adorna la città di verde e di fiori, il clima mite è
un invito a passeggiare all'aria aperta per rigenerarsi. Quando a Merano sboccia la
primavera fiorisce il tempo di nuove scoperte. Arte e natura intavolano un dialogo,
creativo e singolare, nel festival Primavera Meranese che da metà marzo s'articola
fra percorsi tematici e nomi internazionali della “land art”. Ma anche con il progetto
“Figure umane” dedicato alle personalità che hanno contribuito allo sviluppo della
città, mentre il sabato mattina ricompare il Mercato Meranese dedicato esclusivamente a prodotti agroalimentari e artigianali altoatesini.
Nature awakens from its hibernation and adorns the town with greenery and flowers, while the mild climate invites visitors to wander in the reinvigorating fresh air.
The first spring blossoms in Merano herald a time of new discoveries: art and nature
hold a creative and unique dialogue in the Merano Spring Festival from mid-March,
which presents themed trails and international names of “land art” as well as the
“HumanShapes” project, dedicated to personalities who have contributed to the development of the town, while the Saturday morning Merano Market also reappears,
devoted exclusively to food and craft products from South Tyrol.

The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle reopen on 25 March, celebrating 15 years of
natural wonders around the palace that formed the residence of the Empress Sissi:
this earthly paradise, awarded the prestigious title of “International Garden of the
Year” in 2013, features 80 botanical environments and a multitude of attractions including the “Artists Pavilions” and the “Botanical Underworld”.
There are new spring events aimed at wellbeing and health that are also worthy of
attention: April 2016 sees the return of “Merano in Yoga”, bringing with it famed
international experts in holistic disciplines for a gathering made up of meetings, conferences and activities aimed at practitioners and beginners alike. It has its culinary
counterpart in the “Vegetarian Weeks”, while pure and healthy nutrition lies at the
heart of “Südtirol Balance” with its various open-air initiatives. The oasis of wellbeing
remain as ever the Merano Thermal Baths with their 15 pools, the Spa & Vital Center,
the sauna area and fitness centre.
Easter Monday is the time of the traditional Haflinger horse races - which are also
a celebration of 120 years of gallop racing in Merano - that open the season at the
Merano Racecourse, where thoroughbreds will be competing in May. Then comes the
“Merano-Lagundo Half Marathon”, together with the “run4fun”, where a throng of
runners will take part in a weekend sports festival.
Il 25 marzo riaprono i Giardini di Castel Trauttmansdorff che festeggiano i 15 anni
di meraviglie naturali circostanti il maniero che fu dimora dell'imperatrice Sissi: in
questo paradiso terrestre, eletto International Garden of the Year 2013, alloggiano
ottanta ambienti botanici e una moltitudine di attrazioni fra i quali i “padiglioni artistici” e il “regno sotterraneo delle piante”.
Nuovi eventi primaverili nel segno del benessere e della salute si sono imposti all'attenzione. Nell'aprile 2016 Merano in Yoga torna a portare in città illustri maestri
internazionali delle discipline olistiche in un contesto - fatto di incontri, conferenze,
empori, attività - adatto tanto ai conoscitori del settore quanto a chi vi cerca un approccio. La declinazione gastronomica del meeting sono le Settimane vegetariane, e
l'alimentazione sana è pure al centro di Südtirol Balance con varie iniziative all'aperto. Del benessere, l'oasi rimangono sempre le Terme Merano, con le sue 15 piscine, lo
Spa & Vital Center, la zona sauna, il Fitness Center.
Il lunedì di Pasqua è invece il momento delle corse rusticane dei cavalli Haflinger
- fra l'altro si celebrano i 120 anni del galoppo a Merano -, occasione d'apertura della stagione dell'ippodromo, dove i purosangue cominciano a confrontarsi a maggio.
Segue la Half Marathon Merano-Lagundo abbinata ala “run4fun” partecipata da un
esercito di corridori in un fine settimana di festa dello sport.

Summer
L'acqua, elemento connaturato alla città, è la compagna ideale delle assolate giornate estive. La frescura si gode indugiando sui suggestivi terrazzamenti degradanti
verso il fiume Passirio oppure vivendo le esperienze acquatiche fra le 10 piscine del
rigoglioso parco delle Terme. Il nuovo Lido offre brio, sport e tante opportunità fra le
quali la piscina olimpionica e gli acquascivoli più alti dell'Alto Adige.
Water is an element inherent to the town and the perfect companion for sunny summer days. You can enjoy cooler temperatures while lingering on the picturesque terraces running down to the River Passer or experience the pleasures of the ten pools
in the park of the Merano Thermal Baths. The new Lido swimming pool also offers
sporting opportunities and excitement such as its Olympic-size pool and South Tyrol’s highest water slides.

It is also the best time to explore the area by bicycle, gently pedalling along the network of cycle paths through charming villages and picture-postcard landscapes. Meanwhile a riot of colours can be seen at the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle which
between June and August stage the “Evenings at Trauttmansdorff Castle”, a sequence
of world music events featuring internationally renowned singers and musicians that
has in recent years included Fiorella Mannoia and Mario Biondi, Bobby McFerrin and
The Original Blues Brothers Band.
The mountainous landscape surrounding the town is an invitation to immerse yourself
in nature. There are two golf courses near Merano: the Gutshof Brandis 9-hole golf
course in Lana and the Golfclub Passeier.Meran in the romantic Passeier Valley. Expert
walkers will want to try out the Merano High Mountain Trail, where you can practically
touch the sky. The “Waalweg” paths that run along ancient irrigation channels are ideal
for all and run through forests, meadows and orchards just outside the town. A modern
cable car whisks you up to Merano 2000, which in summer becomes a vast Alpine
paradise with well-marked paths suitable both for families and experienced mountainclimbers. Looking down to the valley floor, you can see an ocean of greenery: this is the
Merano Racecourse, where the racing season comes to life. Regarded as one the finest
racetracks in Europe, it offers glamour, entertainment and of course the incredible thrill
of thoroughbred racing. Merano is particularly famous for its steeplechase events, the
most spectacular of all the horse-racing disciplines.
È il periodo migliore per scoprire il territorio in bicicletta: placidamente, pedalando
lungo la rete di piste ciclabili si raggiungono ameni paesini e contesti naturali da
cartolina. I giochi di colore delle fioriture dipingono nel frattempo la tela dei Giardini di Castel Trauttmansdorff dove, fra giugno e agosto, vanno in scena le “Serate ai
Giardini”, rassegna di world music che ospita cantanti e musicisti di spessore internazionale - negli anni scorsi Fiorella Mannoia e Mario Biondi, Bobby McFerrin e The
Original Blues Brothers Band.
Il paesaggio montano che orla la città è un invito a immergersi nella natura camminando. I più esperti sono attesi dall'Alta Via Meranese che permette di toccare il
cielo con un dito. I Waalweg, sentieri che scorrono lungo antichi canali irrigui, sono
tracciati adatti a tutti che sfilano fra boschi, prati e frutteti nell'immediata cornice
urbana. In breve si sale a Merano 2000, in questa stagione uno sfaccettato paradiso
alpino con vie ben segnate e dedicate tanto alle famiglie quanto ai “montanari” più
navigati. Guardando il fondovalle, balza all'occhio un oceano di verde: è l'ippodromo,
dove la stagione di corse entra nel vivo. Impianto considerato fra i più belli d'Europa,
offre glamour, divertimento e naturalmente l'incredibile emozione dei purosangue al
galoppo. In particolare, Merano è celebre per le corse a ostacoli, la specialità ippica
più spettacolare. Inoltre, negli immediati dintorni vi sono due golfclub: il Gutshof
Brandis (9 buche) a Lana e il Golfclub Passiria.Merano immerso nell'incantevole val
Passiria.
Il centro città pullula come non mai di iniziative. Un'incredibile carica di genuinità e
divertimento irrompe in giugno con Asfaltart, il festival degli artisti di strada (decima edizione nel 2016). Fra luglio e agosto meranesi e ospiti si mischiano sotto le
stelle, nei bar e presso i palcoscenici, nei vivaci Martedìsera e nei concerti di Merano
una sera d'estate. La musica d'autore trova invece il suo teatro nel Jazzfestival Alto
Adige e in MeranOJazz.

The town centre is marked by a vibrant series of initiatives. In June comes Asfaltart,
a festival of street artists and an incredible blend of authentitown and fun (2016 sees
its tenth edition). Between July and August locals and visitors alike mingle beneath the
stars, in the bars and by the stages of the lively TuesdayNight in Merano event series
and the concerts of “A summer evening in Merano”. Highly original music can then be
found at the Jazzfestival Alto Adige and in MeranOJazz.

Autumn
L'autunno riesce sempre a sorprendere, come un artista che mischia i colori cambiando l'opera: il pastello degli alberi e dei boschi, l'azzurro acceso delle giornate terse
che si riflette nel bianco della prima neve sulle cime. È il periodo della vendemmia
che si celebra a Merano principalmente in due momenti. Uno è il Törggelen, l'“andar
per locande”, usanza tipica che unisce il sapore delle caldarroste e del vino nuovo ma anche delle specialità più tipiche della cucina sudtirolese - a gite fuori porta. La
raccolta delle mele e dei grappoli sono inoltre lo sfondo della Festa dell'Uva, il terzo
fine settimana di ottobre, appuntamento più di ogni altro radicato nella tradizione:
tre giorni di musica popolare, balli, gastronomia e brindisi.
Autumn always manages to surprise, like an artist mixing colours and changing his
work: the pastel shades of trees and forests, the intense blue of the clear days reflected in the white of the first snows on the peaks. This is the time of the harvest,
celebrated in Merano in two particular ways: one is “Törggelen”, a local custom of
visiting various hostelries that combines the tastes of roast chestnuts and new wine,
as well as typical South Tyrolean culinary specialities, at outdoor events. The apple
and grape harvests also form the backdrop to the Grape Festival, held on the third
weekend in October, an occasion more deeply rooted in tradition than any other:
three days of folk music, dancing, eating and drinking.

Tutt'altra atmosfera, invece, alle Settimane Musicali Meranesi: sono da tempo considerate tra i festival più rinomati d'Europa, grazie a concerti di prestigiose orchestre
e celebri solisti ospitati principalmente al Kursaal, già da fine a agosto sino al tramonto di settembre.
Nel frattempo l'ippodromo vive l'apice della sua stagione con il Palio del Burgraviato
l'ultima domenica di agosto, sfida fra Comuni del territorio abbinati ai cavalli, ma
soprattutto con il weekend del Gran Premio Merano. L'ultimo fine settimana di settembre, i binocoli del “turf” mitteleuropeo sono puntati su questa corsa, la più ricca e
prestigiosa dell'ostacolismo ippico italiano, cimento che solca la storia dal 1935 in una
cornice di festa e mondanità.
Si respira aria glamour, la stessa che caratterizza nello stesso periodo Merano
Fashion, passerella del meglio delle boutique meranesi, e che permea pure il Merano
WineFestival, nella prima metà di novembre, un viaggio straordinario alla scoperta
del meglio della vitivinicoltura italiana e mondiale, ma anche della gastronomia e
delle tendenze in cucina. Un momento incorniciato da una galassia di iniziative che
affrontano il tema del gusto in modo esclusivo, gioioso e rigoroso ad un tempo, e da
diversi punti di vista, con un forum e dibattiti, con degustazioni e cene.

The Merano Music Weeks offer a completely different atmosphere: this event is considered one of Europe’s most popular festivals, with concerts by prestigious orchestras and famous soloists held primarily at the Kursaal from the end of August until
the end of September.
Meanwhile, highlights at the Merano Racecourse include the “Palio des Burggrafenamtes”, a horseracing challenge between local municipalities on the last
weekend of August, and especially the Merano Grand Prix. On the last weekend
in September, the eyes of the Central European horseracing world are on this race,
the biggest and richest steeplechase in Italy, a contest that has been held since 1935
against a festive and sophisticated backdrop.
This palpable glamour can at the same time be found at Merano Fashion, with the
best from Merano’s boutiques appearing on the catwalk, and at the Merano Wine
Festival, held in the first half of November, which offers a wonderful journey of discovery through the highlights of Italian and international wine production, as well as of
gastronomy and cooking trends. It is all framed by a galaxy of initiatives that address
the theme of taste in an exclusive, joyful yet meticulous manner, celebrating different
points of view while hosting meetings and debates that feature tastings and meals.

Inverno
Winter
I giorni si fanno brevi, la natura alpina imbiancata si fa magnifico scenario, i profumi
sono quelli dell'Avvento. Relax, attività o di tutti e due un po': nessun problema, Merano permette ogni tipo di scelta.
Il comprensorio sciistico-escursionistico di Merano 2000 si raggiunge velocemente dalla città, della quale viene considerata la “terrazza soleggiata”. Quaranta chilometri di piste di diversa difficoltà, tracciati per freerider e snowboarder, vari sentieri
escursionistici, la discesa per le slitte, il Luckis Kinderland per i bambini, l'Alpin Bob
- il bob su rotaia lungo oltre 1 chilometro: una serie di possibilità che consente a ciascuno di trovare la montagna che cerca.
The days are short, the snowy Alpine nature becomes a magnificent spectacle, while
the scents are those of Advent. Relaxation, activity or a little of both: no problem, all
kinds of choice are possible in Merano.
The Merano 2000 ski area, the “sun terrace of the town”, is quickly reached by cable
car. Here you can choose between 40 kilometres of pistes of varying difficulty, areas
for freeriders and snowboarders, numerous hiking trails, a toboggan run, “Luckis Kinderland” for children and the Alpin Bob - a 1.1 kilometer-long bob sled on rails - a whole
range of offers to ensure that everyone finds the mountain experience they are looking for.

Between late December and early January the Salewa Basecamp Merano, dedicated
to mountain lovers and all those in search of a breathtaking adventure, offers a unique
experience at an altitude of 2,300 metres above sea level: the chance to spend a night
surrounded by snow and unspoilt nature in a fully-equipped tent.
Around Merano, all less than an hour’s drive away, there are other ski areas with different atmospheres, landscapes and opportunities: the immaculate Schwemmalm in
the Ulten Valley, the secluded and romantic Vigiljoch above Lana, the idyllic village
of Pfelders in the Passeier Valley, or the Senales Valley Glacier. Along with Merano
2000, these resorts form part of the Ski Experience Südtirol/Alto Adige project (also

The Merano Christmas Market, held along a riverbank, is distinguished by its ability
to blend the traditional and modern, beginning with the design of the stalls: the atmosphere is unique, while there is a multitude of things to do and discover at the food
and crafts stands, followed by an experience of the entire town, with special tours,
workshops for children and concerts. And New Year’s Eve in Merano is an occasion to
gather and see in the New Year, with fine dining available in restaurants and a giant
party under the stars.

Merano è storicamente un luogo di incontro fra culture, lingue, conoscenze. Lunga è

ancora in epoca asburgica, qui si riunirono medici provenienti da tutto il mondo. Seguì una serie di grandi assemblee che portarono in città ospiti preminenti e copioso
pubblico. Per decenni gli amministratori locali lavorarono per creare la piattaforma
sulla quale, passando indenne attraverso i due conflitti mondiali, s'è costruita la rinomanza di Merano come sede MICE. Con il profondo rinnovo del Kurhaus, negli
anni Ottanta, la città si è dotata di una location straordinaria per eleganza e autorevolezza. Dotato di un fascino inimitabile è il Kursaal, la sala maggiore con 992 posti
a sedere, cui s'affiancano varie sale di minori dimensioni (70-300 persone). Membro
dell'associazione HCCE (Historic Conference Centres of Europe), il Kurhaus rappresenta uno dei più prestigiosi centri congressi in Europa.
La città dispone di altre interessanti location dotate di moderne attrezzature per

Merano has always been a cultural and linguistic melting pot as well as a hub of scientific exchange. The town boasts a long tradition as a congress venue, one dating back
to the late 19th century. In 1886, still in the time of the Habsburgs, physicians from
around the world gathered there, to be followed by a long series of major gatherings
that brought famous guests and a large public to the town. In those decades, the
groundwork was laid for Merano’s renown as a MICE location, which was undiminished by the two World Wars.
The thorough renovation of the Kurhaus in the 1980s endowed the town with a
unique location of elegance and authority. Its Kursaal, a hall of unmatched splendour,
seats up to 992 people. Moreover, the Kurhaus offers various mid-sized and smaller
rooms (70-300 seats). As a member of the HCCE (Historic Conference Centres of Europe), it ranks among the most prestigious conference venues in Europe.
Merano boasts other intriguing, well-equipped locations suited for all kinds of
gatherings. The Merano Tourist Office supports organisers as a partner in the planning and realisation of meetings.

ROLLING BACK THE YEARS - A NEW ERA FOR WOMEN
The exhibition illustrates the variety of ways in which women
cope with aging. Older women from various age groups,
different countries and very different life situations are presented via images, short histories and films. Each woman has
had the courage to decide what meaning she will give to this
phase of her life. There will also be a varied programme in
support of the exhibition.

The exhibition gives an overall picture of the projects developed in Merano during the 1920s and 1930s. It focuses on the
architectural trends of those decades and relates them to
urban planning.

morte di Alois Kuperion, pittore-mendicante della val Venosta, che ha saputo sviluppare negli anni ’50 un proprio stile di
pittura astratta.
ALOIS KUPERION - PAINTING IS MY PURPOSE IN LIFE
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of Alois
Kuperion, Merano Arte will be holding a major retrospective
on the life and work of the wandering painter from the Val
Venosta. Kuperion succeeded in independently developing an
abstract style of painting, whose colour sense, intuition, composition and airiness influenced a whole series of local artists.

Markus Vallazza è nato nel 1936 a Ortisei; è pittore, grafico e
illustratore. La mostra a cura di Gunther Oberhollenzer propone un’ampia selezione di opere inedite. Merano Arte rende
omaggio a uno dei più noti artisti altoatesini della generazione del secondo dopoguerra, dedicandogli un’ampia retrospettiva in occasione dei suoi 80 anni.
MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE FOR THE 80th BIRTHDAY OF
MARKUS VALLAZZA
Markus Vallazza was born in 1936 in Ortisei in the Val Gardena and is regarded as one of the most famous South Tyrolean
artists of the post-war period. This major retrospective on the
occasion of his 80th birthday is intended to honour his life’s
work. Merano Arte will be showing a large number of previously unpublished original works.

Nuove creazioni della costumista Frida Parmeggiani in occasione del suo settantesimo compleanno. I costumi che ha
realizzato per le Salzburger Festspiele, per Bayreuth e nel
corso di vent’anni di collaborazioni con Robert Wilson, rimangono nella storia del teatro. In collaborazione con l’Università
Mozarteum di Salisburgo.
FRIDA PARMEGGIANI
In 2016 the Merano costume designer Frida Parmeggiani will
be celebrating her 70th birthday. Her costumes have appeared
at the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals; nor will her twodecade-long collaboration with Robert Wilson ever be forgotten. A joint exhibition of costumes with new creations on the
subject of space-nature-architecture is planned for Salzburg
and Merano.

Panoramica sull’architettura nel nord Italia dal 1946 al 1976,
ripercorre le varie espressioni del modernismo nel secondo
dopoguerra. La selezione dell’architetto Martin Feiersinger
e dell’artista Werner Feiersinger (autore delle foto) propone
una serie di architetture ascrivibili alle correnti del neorealismo, del razionalismo, del brutalismo e dell’architettura organica. Un progetto di AUT-Innsbruck.
ITALOMODERN 1+2
The exhibition offers an insight into the architecture of northern Italy from 1946 to 1976. With a focus on individual buildings, architect Martin Feiersinger and artist Werner Feiersinger have selected projects by neo-realists and rationalists,
brutalists and organicists. The spectrum ranges from small
up to megalomaniac-style residential buildings, and from
machine-like architecture to bold designs and idiosyncratic
individual works by little-known architects. Nearly 90 buildings are presented with numerous photographs, a short introductory text as well as newly drawn plans that indicate the
current state of the buildings from a subjective point of view.
