SCRABBLICIEUX!
will pit pairs of
students (Junior and
Senior Divisions) in
our very first in-school
French Scrabble
tournament. The weeklong, after school
competition will
feature a variety of
exciting prizes for our
‘scrabbleurs’. Keeper
trophies and T-shirts
will be awarded to the Division winning teams. As well, a series of
GiftCard Draws will be held, for which all of our participants will be
eligible. Proceeds from the ‘word power’ event will go in support of the
Hospital for Sick Children. Contest details will be posted on the Modern
Languages InfoBoard, and are also available through Mme Gagnon, Mme
Sabatini, or M. Marcuzzi.

is the 265 and current Pope. ►Pope
Benedict is the founder and patron of
the Ratzinger Foundation, a charitable
organisation which makes money from
the sale of his books and essays in
order to fund scholarships and
bursaries for students across the world.
►He is a member of several scientific
academies, such as the French
Académie des sciences morales et
politiques. ►He plays the piano and
has a preference for Mozart and Bach.
►In addition to his native German,
Pope Benedict XVI speaks French and
Italian fluently. He also has a very
good command of Latin and speaks
English and Spanish adequately.
Furthermore, he has some knowledge
of Portuguese. He can read Ancient
Greek and biblical Hebrew. He has
stated that his first foreign language is
French.
LA BÉATIFICATION DE
JEAN-PAUL II:
Dimanche, premier
mai, sur la façade de
la place Saint-Pierre, un million de
pèlerins ont assisté à Rome pour la
cérémonie autour de Jean-Paul II.
À la fin de la messe, le Pape, puis les
cardinaux, les chefs d'État et autres
têtes couronnées, les chefs de
gouvernement (87 pays représentés)
se sont recueillis devant le cercueil.
La relique d’un flacon de sang de
Jean-Paul II insérée dans un
reliquaire en forme de rameau
d'olivier a marqué le rite de
béatification. Elle a été portée par
sœur Tobiana, la fidèle religieuse
polonaise qui a été à son service, et
sœur Marie-Simon-Pierre, la
religieuse française que l'Église a
reconnue miraculée par
l'intercession de Jean-Paul II et qui a
décidé de la béatification. La fête du
bienheureux Jean-Paul II sera
célébrée tous les ans, le 22 octobre.

ho assistito al loro
spettacolo!
►Il trio ha tanto talento, e
ha avuto un enorme
successo negli ultimi 30
anni: ha venduto quaranta
milioni di dischi con delle
canzoni come Tom Sawyer, Limelight e Spirit of the Radio.
►Al concerto, c’erano anche molte persone di 40 e di 50 anni! I membri
di Rush hanno suonato con tanta passione! Tutte le persone sono state in
piedi con molta energia et gioia.
►Lee, Peart e Lifeson non sono solo un gruppo, ma una grande storia
per tutte le persone che amano la musica rock!

►F. APRIL 15: Sincere thanks to Mr. Tom Sagar, retired
French language teacher and ISE Ontario representative
(International Student Exchange), who did presentations
to five Grade 9 French classes. The well-traveled Mr.
Sagar spoke of the benefits of the reciprocal exchange
programs available to students in Québec and Europe,
and of the wonder of embracing the life adventures that
come from stepping out of one’s comfort zone.
►TH. MAY 5: Day excursion to the
Toronto Zoo for four Grade 9 French
classes and students from Student
Services. Mme Gagnon, M. Marcuzzi,
and our Education Assistants will
accompany the group. The outing
serves as an introduction to the
program’s Unité 7, Canal animal (in
which students learn about and discuss issues related to
animals: animal health, responsible pet ownership and
animal rights) and the Examen oral.

EVENTS
►F. MAY 20, PERIOD 1: Italian language Mass with
celebrant Fr. Ernie DeCiccio, pastor of St. David’s
Church in Maple, and Sig. Marcuzzi’s Grade 10 Italian
class. The liturgy will be held in our School Chapel.
Families are invited to attend, and refreshments will be
served after the Mass in Room 205.
►F. MAY 27, PERIOD 1: VIVA IX!, our celebration of the
year’s French young authors, brings together students
who submitted writing pieces for the 2011 Prix jeunes
écrivains and their families for a reception, which will
be held in our School Library.
►WEEK OF MAY 30 (LUNCH ‘B’ / AFTER SCHOOL):
SCRABBLICIEUX!, Our first-ever French Scrabble
tournament will run daily, with two rounds each day.
Contestant pairs will do
lexical battle against others
in the junior and senior
divisions. Event proceeds
will go in support of
Toronto’s Hospital for
Sick Children.
►F. JUNE 10, PERIOD 4:
French language Mass will
be held for Mme
Gagnon’s Grade 11 and
M. Marcuzzi’s Grade 9
classes in our School
Chapel. Students will join
Fr. Ernie DeCiccio in the
celebration of the Mass.
Families are welcome to
attend.

Here’s a monthly contest for French language students,
Grades 7 to 12 — and with prizes for correct solutions!
WHAT IS A ’REBUS’? A rebus is a representation of words
or syllables by pictures or symbols whose names
resemble the intended words or syllables in sound.
YOUR MISSION: Put together the letter and picture clues
to form a sentence in French.
ENTRY DEADLINE: Friday, May 27, 2011
THE DRAW will be held on Monday, May 30, 2011. The
first correct entry drawn will receive a $5 Tim Hortons
Gift Certificate (1 per Level).
►STUDENTS FROM OUR FEEDER SCHOOLS: Submit your
answer, with your name, to your French teacher, who
will send your entry to Mr. G. Marcuzzi, at St. Theresa
