Hello, my name is Dora Di Capua.
I’m an Italian teacher in the Liceo scientifico Francesco Severi ( High school’s name) and I’ll take care of you in
September.
In fact, I am the tutor of the exchange students (AFS STUDENT) that will be hosted in our high school.
You, and so the other students, will have another teacher who will take care of you. It will be a teacher from the class
where you will study and that will help you learning Italian and other subjects, and above all, he will help you together
with me, to feel comfortable in the school, to get through problems, to find friends so that your year in Italy will be
amazing and unforgettable.

capiremo subito e potrà essere anche difficile comunicare, ma questo non ci deve spaventare.

Castellammare di Stabia –Naples-Italy
Castellammare di Stabia is situated in the southern province of Naples , in the area between the end of the Vesuvius area
and the beginning of the Sorrento peninsula . [2]golfo di Napolimonti Lattarifiume Sarno
Castellammare di Stabia is a pleasant, modern, busy city. It is one of the most important cities in Campania and yet it has
preserved a human quality about it what immediately comforts and enthralls the visitor. Here, the Kings of Naples, used to
spend their holidays (Villa Quisisana) throughout the centuries. And some of Italy's most famous and gloriuos ships, have
been launched in its shipyards.
The name comes from Castrum ad mare, or Castrum Maris or Castle, a fortress by the sea, with reference to the castle built
During the Middle Ages, which extended around the city. La specifica "di Stabia" secondo la tradizione, deriva dal nome
dato anticamente al luogo: Stabia o Stabiae (città fondata da Ercole). The specific "di Stabia" according to tradition, derives
from the ancient name given to the place: Stabia or Stabiae (city founded by Hercules)

Stabiae is a land with an ancient hearth (Oscan, Samnite, Etruscan, Greek, Roman). Perhaps its name means "stop, pause,
station": this would indeed mean that for thousands of years it has been acknowledged as a land of many delights. The
Archaelogical Excavations (wich have brought to light imposing, elegant Roman villas) and Stabian Museum are evidence
of the historical importance of the City, wich was buried, along with Herculaneum and Pompeii, by the eruption of Vesuvius
in 79 A.D
Thanks to its particular position, Castellammare di Stabia is privileged by its unique climatic conditions: a combination of a
temperate sea, woodland and mountain climate. In fact, the City is situated in the centre of the Gulf of Naples, at the foot
of Mount Faito (1.100 m.), on the road leading to the Peninsula of Sorrento. The climate is the mild both in summer and
winter. Castellammare di Stabia was officially definided "Metropolis of Waters, Climates and Sea" during the 13th
Congress of Hydrology, Climatology and Physical Therapy.

The Italian School System
In Italia ogni alunno deve frequentare la scuola o la
formazione professionale sino ai 18 anni. Questo diritto
/ dovere riguarda tutti gli alunni stranieri, regolari e
irregolari, con o senza il permesso di soggiorno.
In Italy, every student has to attend school or
professional training until the age of 18. This right/duty
regards all foreign students, whether they are regular or

Le scuole “secondarie superiori” o “ di secondo grado”
In Italia ci sono diversi tipi di scuole con molti corsi e piani di studio.
Tutti i corsi di studio durano 5 anni e si concludono con un “esame di stato”. Gli alunni che superano l’esame
ottengono un “diploma”. Dopo il diploma si può iniziare a lavorare oppure proseguire gli studi nelle Università.
Negli istituti professionali alla fine del terzo anno c’è un esame “di qualifica’. Dopo questo esame si può
iniziare a lavorare oppure si può proseguire per altri 2 anni di studio e ottenere il diploma finale.
Questo diploma finale è un titolo più completo, di livello più elevato e permette anche di proseguire gli studi
nelle Università.
Upper secondary schools or “second-level” secondary schools
Italy has different types of schools, offering a large number of different courses and study plans.
All study courses last 5 years and end with a “state examination”. Students who pass the examination are awarded a
“diploma”. After the diploma, you can start work or continue your studies at university.
At the end of the third year at vocational schools, you will have to take a “qualification” examination. After this examination,
you can start work or continue your studies for a further 2 years in order to obtain a final diploma. This final diploma is a
more complete qualification, of a higher level, which will also enable you to continue your studies at university.

Informazioni sul calendario scolastico
Information on the School Year
L’anno scolastico
L’anno scolastico dura nove mesi. Le lezioni iniziano
nella prima metà di settembre e terminano entro i primi
dieci giorni di giugno.
The School Year
The school year lasts nine months. Lessons begin in the
first half of September and end during the first ten days
in June.
Ci sono dei periodi di vacanza già stabiliti:
- vacanze di Natale;
- vacanze di Pasqua;
- feste civili o religiose.
Schools have set holiday periods:
- Christmas holidays;
- Easter holidays;
- civil or religious holidays.
La giornata scolastica
Le lezioni, obbligatorie, cominciano alle 8,15 di
mattina circa e finiscono alle 14,00 circa. Alcune scuole
hanno lezione anche al pomeriggio.
Ogni classe è composta da ragazze e ragazzi. Tutte le
materie di studio sono obbligatorie. L’insegnamento della
religione cattolica è facoltativo.
Alcune scuole organizzano nel pomeriggio attività a
scelta e corsi di sostegno e recupero.
The School Day
Compulsory lessons begin at around 8,15 in the morning
and end at about 2.00 p.m.. Some schools have lessons in
the afternoon too.
All classes are made up of boys and girls. All subjects are
compulsory. Lessons on the Catholic religion are optional.
Some schools organise a selection of activities and support
and catch-up courses in the afternoon.

Technical Business Education
Indirizzo giuridico-amministrativo
il piano di studi fornisce competenze sia nel settore
giuridico che in quello economico-aziendale. Gli alunni
sviluppano capacità gestionali nelle imprese del
settore industriale, commerciale, bancario, finanziario,
assicurativo, nella pubblica amministrazione.
Legal/Administrative Course
The study plan provides students with skills in the legal
sector and the economic/business sector. Students develop
business management skills relative to the industrial,
commercial, banking, financial, insurance and public
administration sectors.
Indirizzo giuridico-economico-aziendale
Il piano di studi si fonda sempre sulle materie
professionalizzanti, quali diritto, economia politica e
aziendale, scienze delle finanze, 2 lingue straniere. Gli
studenti sviluppano competenze nell’affrontare problemi
di economia aziendale, la gestione aziendale, anche dal
punto di vista economico, giuridico, organizzativo e
contabile.
Indirizzo commerciale programmatore
Piano di studi simile al precedente, ma con una
caratterizzazione informatica sia dal punto di vista del
trattamento dei dati sia da quello della progettualità e
programmazione.
Legal/Economic/Business Course
The study plan is always based on professional subjects,
such as law, political and business economy, financial
sciences and 2 foreign languages. Students develop skills
in handling problems of business economy and business
management, from an economic, legal, organisational
and accounting point of view.
Business Programmer Course
This study plan is similar to the above, but focuses on
IT as regards data processing, planning and
programming.
