ORCHESTRAL TRAINING COURSE with Leon Spierer Third edition January - April 2014 APPLICATION Intesa Sanpaolo and Società del Quartetto di Vicenza are the organizers of an orchestral training course for student and graduate (up to 25 years of age - 30 years for the double basses) string musicians. The purpose of Progetto Orchestra is to foster the artistic growth of new generations of musicians in the increasingly difficult path of a musical career. In addition to graduates, young nondegree musicians who have passed a qualifying exam in their respective instrument can also apply. COURSE The course will begin in January and will run until April 2014. The course will be conducted by maestro Leon Spierer, former concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker, with the following schedule: • Wednesday January 8 to Sunday January 12, 2014 • Wednesday February 19 to Sunday February 23, 2014 • Wednesday Sunday March 19 to Sunday March 23, 2014 • Wednesday April 23 to Sunday April 27, 2014 Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings of each month from 10:00 to 12:30, participants will have individual lessons of 30 minutes each with the maestro Spierer on orchestral excerpts, which are a critical aspect to success in auditioning for these types of institutions. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoon from 14:30 to 18:00, there will be group tests. Sunday morning there will be rehearsal followed by a concert in the afternoon at 16:30 at the Gallerie d’Italia - Palazzo Leoni Montanari, home of the museum of Intesa Sanpaolo in Vicenza. Open rehearsals for students with presentations by a musicologist on the pieces to be performed are also provided for the duration of the course. In this case, the registration form must be sent with a photocopy of your passport and the registration fee of € 30.00 in the terms specified above. AUDITIONS The entrance auditions will be held at the Gallerie d’Italia - Palazzo Leoni Montanari, Contra Santa Corona, 25 - Vicenza, on the following days: - Monday January 6 from 10:00 to 12:30 and from 14:30 to 18:00 - Tuesday January 7 from 10:00 to 12:30 and from 14:30 to 18:00 The admission of the students in the course is subject to individual assessment. There is no limit to places for those auditing the course. Successful applicants are required to appear at the assigned day and time with valid identity document. Participants must submit a piece for solo instrument and a sight reading of music for orchestra. At the end of the auditions, the list of students will be chosen. If capacity is not reached, the organization reserves the right to reopen registration and to conduct additional selections until the completion of the list. The jury will be composed of maestro Leon Spierer, by the maestro Pierangelo Valtinoni and the artistic director of the Società del Quartetto di Vicenza, maestro Piergiorgio Meneghini. ATTENDANCE Attendance is free of charge. Participants will be expected to attend all classes and carry out all the activities in the course, including open rehearsals and concerts for the school at the end of the session to be held at the Gallerie d’Italia - Palazzo Leoni Montanari. Absence is only justified in case of illness accompanied by a medical certificate, and not more than once during the entire course, with the penalty of replacement in the course. The dates of the meetings may vary due to unavoidable commitments of the teacher. At the end, students will receive a certificate of completion. Participants will possibly be substituted in the four concerts by other suitable participants, in compliance with the decision of the artistic committee (from the first date the musicians will be assigned for the four concerts). THE PROFESSOR Leon Spierer Born in Berlin, he studied violin with L. Spiller in Buenos Aires and M. Rostal in London. He was first violin in the Symphony Orchestra of Bremen and Stockholm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1963 to 1993 he held the same position at the prestigious Berliner Philharmoniker. He also has maintained an active soloist career playing internationally with conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Carlo Maria Giulini, Riccardo Muti. He was also concertmaster of the Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala under the direction of Wolfgang Sawallisch. It is often called to serve on juries of international competitions as well as a professor and director of orchestras around the world.
