Learning Goals
Comprehension: Students will gain understanding of oral and written material on various topics,
ranging from basic needs and personal interests to more complex tasks, such as travel, history,
and politics. They will be able to read written material adapted from authentic sources, such as
brief narratives and newspaper articles, and will gradually be able to infer and extract
increasingly complex information from the material. The understanding and expression of
personal thoughts and feelings will grow to include increasingly sophisticated nuances.
PL
E
Production: Students will be able to handle uncomplicated conversation tasks and standard social
situations. They will be learn to react to communicative situations beyond their mere immediate
needs, approaching in some depth topics such as leisure time, professional goals, and cultural
norms. Skills in oral presentation will begin to solidify: within limits, students can sustain a
general conversation and be understood, debating opposing viewpoints on a range of topics, and
making comparisons and hypotheses. Students will be able to write short letters and show
command of simple sentence syntax. Skills in narrating in short paragraphs begin to emerge.
M
Linguistic structures: Students will learn increasingly complex grammar, such as indirect and
combined pronouns, various past and future tenses, and conditional and subjunctive modes.
