Day of the sick – Sacrament of Anointing
The Rite of Anointing tells us that there is no need to wait until a person is at the point
of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the
illness is sufficient. The Sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after the
anointing but becomes ill once again, or if, during the same illness, the person’s
condition becomes more serious. A person should be anointed before surgery when a
dangerous illness is the reason for the intervention.
Moreover, “old people may be anointed if they are in weak condition, even though no
dangerous illness is present. Sick children may be anointed if they have sufficient use of
reason to be comforted by this sacrament. The sick person should be encouraged to ask
for the anointing, and to receive it with faith and devotion, not misusing the sacrament by
putting it off”.
Only bishops and priests may be ministers of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the
Sick. A penitential rite or confession followed by the Liturgy of the Word opens the
celebration. Scripture awakens the faith of the sick and family members and friends to
pray to Christ for the strength of his Holy Spirit. The priest lays his hands on the head of
the sick person. He then proceeds to anoint, with the blessed Oil of the Sick the forehead
and hands of the sick person. Since Holy Communion is the effective sign of Christ’s
Paschal Mystery, it becomes for the recipient the opportunity to unite one’s own
suffering and dying to that of Christ with the hope of life eternal with Him.
Ash Wednesday February 10th - This is a day of fast and abstinence. For us
Catholics, Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Holy Season of Lent, or better still, a
time of conversion ‘change.’
Lent is a six-week cycle of particular spiritual intensity which calls us to a conversion of
our inner self. It is a time of prayer, penance, devotion and fasting which leads us into
the beautiful celebrations of Holy Week, “Triduum” and Easter Sunday.
In today’s bulletin, you will find a Lenten Program schedule that will take place in our
parish as well as Development and Peace Lenten Calendar.
As we begin this season, I would like to point out some of our celebrations:
• Ash Wednesday, for Christians is a universal day of fasting and abstinence from
meat.
• On Ash Wednesday, Masses in English will be celebrated at; 8:30am and at
10:00 a.m. with St. Mary’s choir school children In Italian, Mass will be
celebrated at 7:30pm. Ashes will be distributed at all masses.
• Stations of the Cross – in English, every Tuesday, at 7:00pm, in Italian will be
held every Friday after the 7:30pm Mass.
Development and Peace – the enclosed Development and Peace Lenten calendar
invites us to reflect on how we can Create a Climate of Change in our personal lives in
order to reduce our harmful impact on the environment. Activities and information help
our reflection and suggestions for contributing to the Share Lent collection, March 13,
2016 are included.
Day of the sick: will be celebrated this coming Tuesday, February 9th at
11:00 o’clock – in Italian. After Mass, you are invited to the parish hall for a hot lunch
offered by the C.W.A. The invitation for lunch is for both English and Italian
members of our parish community. The Sacrament of the sick in
English will be offered on Saturday, February 13th during the 5:00 p.m. Mass
for parishioners who are not able to attend on the 9th.
Theology on Tap: don’t miss our next Theology on Tap where we welcome Bishop
Joe Dabrowski for the first time! Come out for a beer with the Bishop on Tuesday,
February 9 at the Fox and Fiddle at 7:30pm for a young adults age 19-39. Free appetizers

Giornata degli ammalati – Unzione degli infermi
L’unzione degli infermi (o unzione dei malati) è un sacramento celebrato dalla chiesa
cattolica e da altre chiese cristiane. Consiste fondamentalmente nella preghiera che si fa
per un malato, e nell’unzione dello stesso con l’olio appositamente benedetto per questo
uso. È il sacramento destinato espressamente dalla Chiesa al conforto anche fisico delle
persone affette da malattia o che devono subire un intervento chirurgico.
Inoltre, “le persone anziane possono essere consacrate se sono in condizioni deboli,
anche se nessuna malattia pericolosa è presente. Bambini malati possono essere
consacrati se hanno sufficiente uso della ragione per essere confortati da questo
sacramento. La persona malata dovrebbe essere incoraggiata a chiedere l’unzione e a
riceverla con fede e devozione.
Solo i vescovi e i sacerdoti possono essere ministri del sacramento dell’unzione degli
infermi. Un rito penitenziale o confessione, seguita dalla liturgia della parola, apre la
celebrazione. La scrittura risveglia la fede dei malati e dei familiari ed amici a pregare
Cristo attraverso la forza dello Spirito Santo. Il sacerdote impone le mani sulla testa della
persona malata. Procede quindi per ungere con l’olio benedetto la fronte e le mani della
persona malata. Poichè la santa comunione è il segno del mistero Pasquale di Cristo, la
persona che riceve il sacramento ha possibilità di unire le proprie sofferenze a quelle di
Cristo con la speranza di una vita eterna con Lui.
Mercoledì, 10 febbraio, celebriamo <Mercoledì delle Ceneri>
Il mercoledì delle ceneri, tradizionalmente è un giorno di digiuno e astinenza. Per la
comunità cattolica inizia il tempo quaresimale o meglio ancora un tempo di conversione.
La quaresima è un ciclo di sei settimane di particolare intensità spirituale che ci chiama
alla conversione interna. È tempo di preghiera, devozioni e digiuno che ci conducono
alle bellissime celebrazioni della settimana santa <Triduum> e domenica di Pasqua.
Nel bollettino odierno, troverete il programma delle celebrazioni che avvengono durante
la settimana santa nella nostra parrocchia, come pure troverete il calendario del
Development and Peace <Sviluppo e Pace>. Mentre iniziamo questo cammino
quaresimale, vorrei farvi notare alcune delle nostre celebrazioni:
• Mercoledì delle ceneri; per i cristiani è una giornata universale di digiuno ed
astinenza dalla carne.
• Giorno delle ceneri, le Messe verranno celebrate alle ore 8:30 a.m. e alle ore
10:00 a.m. con gli alumni della scuola di St. Mary’s in lingua inglese. In italiano
dopo la Messa delle 7:30pm.
• Via Crucis – le stazioni della Via Crucis nella nostra parrocchia saranno
celebrate ogni martedì alle ore 7:00pm in inglese, ed in italiano ogni venerdì
dopo la messa delle 7:30pm.
Sviluppo e Pace - <Development and Peace> - il calendario quaresimale dello
Sviluppo e Pace che troverete nel bollettino odierno, ci invita a riflettere su come
possiamo creare un clima di cambiamento nella nostra vita personale al fine di ridurre il
nostro impatto sull’ambiente. Troverete scritte sul calendario attività, informazioni e
suggerimenti che possono aiutarci a riflettere sulla colletta quaresimale per lo Share Lent
che si terrà il 13 marzo, 2016.
Giornata per gli ammalati: verrà celebrata questo martedì, 9 febbraio. Invitiamo
tutti gli ammalati ed anziani dai 65 anni in su, membri della nostra comunità parrocchiale,
per le confessioni alle ore 10:00am e celebrazione della S. Messa alle ore 11:00am,
durante la quale, offriremo il sacramento degli ammalati a coloro che desiderano
riceverlo. Subito dopo segue un pranzo in sala parrocchiale offerto dalle Donne
Cattoliche sia per la comunità Italiana che quella Inglese.
