In Luke and in Matthew, the devil presents three temptations to Jesus. The devil tempts Jesus to use his power to appease his hunger, he offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus will worship him, and he tempts Jesus to put God's promise of protection to the test. In each case, Jesus resists, citing words from Scripture to rebuke the devil's temptation. Each temptation that Jesus faces offers insight into the spirituality we hope to develop as we keep the forty days of the Season of Lent. We can trust God to provide for our material needs. We worship God because God alone has dominion over us and our world. We can trust God to be faithful to his promises. Jesus' rejection of the devil's temptations shows that he will not put God to the test. Grounding himself on the Word and authority of Scripture, Jesus rebukes the devil by his confidence in God's protection and faithfulness. Pope Francis says: Today our gaze is on the Holy Family and we are drawn into the simplicity of the life they led in Nazareth. It is an example that does our families great good, helping them increasingly to become communities of love and reconciliation, in which tenderness, mutual help, and mutual forgiveness is experienced. 2015 donation tax receipts are ready for pick up. They are available at the back of the Church. Please ask an usher if you need assistance. COLLETTA SETTIMANALE Please Note: Chapel Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 am and the Parish office will be closed. ST. BRIGID’S PARISH WEEKLY COLLECTION SEASON OF LENT The Lenten season is a time of reflection and a time to be thankful for our blessings. The four Lenten pillars are: Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving and Sacrifice. It is a sign of our care for those in need, and an expression of our gratitude for all the blessing God has given us. Works of charity and the promotion of justice are integral elements of the Christian way of life we began when we were baptized. This year, we continue with the purple Lenten bag program. It is a symbol of our sacrifice and self-denial. In order to help those in need, please consider adding a daily monetary value in your Lenten bag. All proceeds will go towards Out of the Cold and to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul programs. SPECIAL THANKS ST. BRIGID’S & ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA PATRON SAINTS CELEBRATION On behalf of Father Carlos Sierra, we wish to thank everyone that participated in last week’s St. Brigid’s Triduum Masses. We gathered as a community to celebrate and reflect on the remarkable life of our Patron Saint. Special thanks to our community, near and far, for gathering together for the St. Brigid’s and St. Catherine of Siena Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 6th. We had an opportunity to celebrate our two Patron Saints at the Saturday evening Mass as well as enjoy dinner and dancing. We wish to extend our appreciation to all our volunteers and sponsors that made this event a success: Father Carlos Sierra, Linda Ward, Joe Naccarato, Vincenzo Camera, Joven Fernandez, Crocetta and Franco Paladino, Donato & Giovanna Filardi, John and Ross Ruscica from Thorncrete, Manny Di Pietro and Tony Galea from Malpack Ltd., Glen and Patty Day from Heritage Funeral Centre, and to all of our guests that supported this event ~ Thank You and May God Bless You! STATIONS OF THE CROSS ~ EVERY FRIDAY Please join us every Friday evening at 7:00 pm, throughout the Lenten season as we pray the Stations of the Cross in both English and Italian in our Parish. Praying the Stations of the Cross is a powerful way to contemplate, and enter into, the mystery of Jesus’ gift of himself to us. Please join us this Friday, February 19th. POPE FRANCIS’ ASH WEDNESDAY MESSAGE LIVE LENT WELL Jesus told his disciples, “Be careful not to practice your righteousness before men to be seen by them”. “When you give alms do not sound a trumpet before you”. “Your Father who sees will reward you in secret.” God's word gives us the proper orientation for living Lent well. When we do something well, sometimes we are tempted to be appreciated and to have a reward: the human glory. But it is a false reward because we project towards what others think of us. Jesus asks us to do good because it is good. He asks us to feel always under the gaze of our heavenly Father and to live in union with Him, not in relation to the judgment of others. ARCHDIOCESE DAY OF CONFESSION WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9th On Wednesday, March 9th, St. Brigid’s will celebrate the Archdiocese Day of Confessions in preparation for Easter. Father Carlos will be available to hear your confessions from 10:00 to 10:45 am, 5:00 to 6:30 pm and then again at 7:40 pm after Holy Mass and Novena. TOGETHER WE CONTINUE TO WORK WONDERS SUNDAY, MARCH 13 is SHARELIFE SUNDAY Our Lord encourages us with a timely reminder about what our actions truly should be – to show mercy to others. ShareLife is that connective bridge between the pulpit and the street. When we are called to action in the Catholic community, we know of so many ways we can make a difference by working together in the lives of those in need. Annually, we share in helping over 114,000 individuals, thanks to the support received through our collective efforts. Please help us celebrate ShareLife’s 40th anniversary by supporting our annual Archdiocesan appeal during this Lenten season! ~Thomas Cardinal Collins. The regular collection for the week ending February 7th, 2016 was $3,870.40. Thank you for your ongoing generosity and contribution. Please remember St. Brigid’s Parish in your last will and testament. Don’t forget to ask us about Pre-Authorized Giving (P.A.G.)!
