Due Parole
Cari Amici,
IJ mese di novembre e' per
tradizione iI mese dei Santi e principalmente, per iI nostro sentimento e'
iI mese dei Morti.
Diversi fra di noi vanno' in ltalia
"per i Morti... Mentre le vacanze ci
portano in diverse parti del mondo, il,
tempo dei morti ci porta in ltalia sulla
tomba dei nostri earl che ci guardano
dill cielo, 0 anche qui a Londra.
Ma quello che spiritualmente ,c' molto commovcnte
e' il fatto che noi italiani
chiamiamo i cimiteri con il
nome di eamposanto, perche'
ci riposano i corpi dei nostri
eari. Ma le loro anime sono in
cielo e ci guardano dal cielo.
Loro sono i santi. Tutti i nostri
eari che hanno ormai la loro
abitazione con Dio Padre sono
santi, perche' sono purificati
dalle imperfezioni e dai pcceati che fanno parte della
nostra vita dl ogni giomo.
Sicuramente, dopo la morte,
avranno anche aspettato un
po' di tempo prima di arrivare
proprio a vivere pienamente la
vita di Dio, ma ora sono S<1nti.
Sono in Paradiso.
Queste sono le persone che
noi chiamiamo S<1nti 'e 10 sono
veramente. Ma la S<1ntita'

Si puo' dire che con il ballesimo, Dio

L'amore. di Dio ,ci si presenta
concrelamente nelle beatitudini del
Vangelo. Noi sentiamo che' si ripete
sempre la parola "beati... beati....:
perche' I'atteggiamento' del nostro
cuore non e' quello della tristezza ilia
quello della gioia fiduciosa. Noi viviamo sotto 10 sguardo di Dio. e tullO
quanto avviene nella nostra vita sta
davanti a Lui. Non dobbiamo aver
paura, perche' Dio Padre non ci
chiama all'angoseia, ma alia gioia e
quindi noi stiamo davanti a LUI con
un cuore di Figli.
La sua parola prende possesso del
nostro cuore e erea dentro di noi
pensieri e desideri nuovi che sono i
pensieri e i desideri di Dio: per questo
possiamo dire che con il Battesimo
noi siamo veramente nati da Dio e
ritomiamo a Dio, perche' e' Dio che
chiama cd e' Dio che da la forza di
eamminare fino a portarei alia grande
festa dei salvati.·E a questa festa ci si
arriva lavando noi stessi nel sangue
dell'agnello.
La morte di Gcsu' in.croce e' il
luogo in cui la nostra vita' viene
rigenerata. IJ nostro egoismo, cioe',
viene seiolto dalla forza villoriosa
dell'amore di Dio. Ci viene data la
forza per un eammino di amore verso
gli aUri.

Duemilaeinqueeento miliardi
(2.500.000.000.000) di lire italiane:
una eifra vertiginoso, vero? Equivale
a poeo piu' di un miliardo di sterlirie'
inglcsi.
E qual'e' iI significato di qucsta
eifra? Fa parte (e ncanche una grande
parte) del risparmio che iI govemo
italiano sta cercando di effettuare nei
confronti delle leggi i cui stanziamenli vcngono fissali.ogni anno daIla
Finanziaria. Fa parte dunque della
cura dimigrante ehe l'Italia dovra'
scguire per ridurre iI pesanlissimo
deficc pubblico: austerita' all'italiana.
E dove eadra' iI coltello di tagli
economici? Sono pochi i settori della
spcsa pubbliea che sfuggono al
coltello del Prcsidente del Consiglio
Carlo Azeglio Ciampi e i suoi ministri, per esempio:
+ 760 miliardi nel settore di arcc
urbane, trasporti e viabilita'. Cosi', la
citta' di Roma ricevera' intervenli 130
miliardi in meno di quanto stabilito.
Cosi' anche un contributo ridotto di
300 miliardi per I'Anas e 330 miliardi
fatli fuori nel eampo dell'ammortamento dei mutui delle ferrovie in
concessione.
+ 640 nel settore della co-operazione
che vuol dire un taglio consistente
subito dai contributi ai Paesi in via di
sviluppo. Dei 1.233 miliardi attesi ne
saranno impegnati solo 593.
+ 400 miliardi nella sanita' grazie in
parte a un "gioco" di cifre.
+ 518 nei confronti delle universita' e
ricerche
+ 143 nella pubbliea amministrazione
+ 112 nel settore del turismo e
spettacolo
A destra troverete una tabella delle

Oltre a qucsti risparmi e' in progetto una riduzione delle spese a
earattere pluriennale. 1 tagli (si tratta
di slittamenti di spes.,) ammonlano a
.5.500 miliardi; pero' iI governo ha
cereato di intervenire nei settori dove
iI volume esistente di stanziamenti
dovrebbe permettere la conclusione di

Padri Pallolliani (tra di loro si chiamano SACI). Ma "apostolato. missione. vocazione, carisma, insieme per
I'apostolato, Unione dell'Apostolato
Callolico, UAC.": questi termini giravano liberalmente a Grottaferrata Ira
iI 13-17 sellembre nell'allesa dell'
"UAC".
P. Carmelo mi ehiese di attendere
I'aggiornamento spirituale. Per quello
che potevo capire, questa era un'opportunita' per tutti gli e1ementi della
Famiglia PalIottiana (Apostolato
Cattolico), religiosi, sacei-doti, laici
puntualizzare nuovamente i loro sforzi
e ristabilire iI loro Javoro (cioe' I'apostolato). Apparentemente S. Vincenzo Pallolli era convinto che tutti i
membri della comunita' cristiana
dovessero lavorare assieme.
Cio' che siamo chiamati a fare e'
la nostra vocazione. 11 nostro lavoro
e' I'apostolato. Insieme e' I'unione.
Pcr prime 'abbiamo scntito Pier
Giorgio Liverani che espose iI molo
dei laici. Egli spicgo' che, allraverso
le varie fasi della vit:: della Chiesa, i
laici sono stati sempre presenti sebbene iI lore mole sia stalO riscoperto

solo recentemente dal Vatieano 11.
Difatti Adamo ed Eva erano i
primi laici. I primi commandamenti
del Signore erano diretti ai laici.
Cristo era Jaico e fu presentato ai
laici: i pastori e re magi. Tutti gli
apostoli erano laici - non c'era nessun
sacerdote tra loro.
Cio' nonostante a Pier Giorgio
sembrava che la vocazione di un Jaico
e' vista come un qualcosa di negativo.
"Un laico e' qualc'uno che non e'.
Non e' quaJche cosa d'altro".
Pero' iI laico ha un enorme peso.
11 peso di prendere la parola di Dio e
portarla a tutti gli altri. La fine della
celebrazione della messa non significa
certamente la fine della nostra cristianita'. Significa, invece, che devi
prendere quest'eucaristia con te ogni
giorno della tua vha e portarla nella
vita degli altri.

Liverani fosse interessante a me sembrava che ci mancasse qualcosa. Che
cosa? Allora non ne ero sicura.

I'ha riscoperta.
Non puo' essere un qualche cosa
che si rifIette in se stessa, ma che si
progetta verso tutti; deve avere 10
spirito missionario. E, come ripetuto
da Suora Capretti, la Madre Generale
il giorno dopo, P. Freeman crede fermamente che 'il pensare e il parlare
dell'unita' non e' sufliciente ma deve
concretarsi in una realta' ,vivente.
Annuncio' quattro punti da riscoprire:
I) Fiducia: senza di essa una comunita' non puo' superare le difficolm.
2) Obbedienza: udire, ascoltare. Per
troppo tempo i sacerdoti hanno continuato a proclamare senza fermarsi
ad ascoltare la voce dei fcdeli. S.
Vincenzo credeva invece di udire
tutti, di dare retta a tUlli - anche i piu'
piccoli.

4) Conversione. 11 rinovamento inizia
con la ·conversione. I laici devono
superare la' loro 'passivita', Troppo
spesso il e1ero usa i laici solo quando
ne ha bisogno. Iliaci hanno poco
senso della loro autorita', I laici, in
una parrocehia, sono li' per parlare,
per suggerire, per provocare, pero' il
parroceo deve prendere I'ultima responsabilita', (Anche questo concetto
e' stato rinforzato iI giorno dopo). 11
parroco puo prendere controllo totale.
Puo decidere' su tutto: ma cio' nega
sia obedienza ehe la comunicazione e
percio' proibisce iI processo dell'unita'. Una parrocehia morira' e vivra' a

compresi i Patronati.
In rappresentanza del centro unitario dei patronati, il sOlloscirtto ha
Icllo un comunicato che denunciava il
fallo chc Lpatronati non hanno avuto
la possibilita' di incontrarsi a tu per tu
con il SOllosegretario per fargli prcsente la situazione critica che ·molti
nostri connazionali stanno allraversando in questi ultimi tempi a causa
deicambiamenti legislativi dcllati
dalle ultime manovrc finanziarie italiane.

che oggi potrebbe incontrarc chi e"
titolarc di qualche prestazione a
carico del Department of Social Security e vorrcbbe trasferirsi in Ita!ia, si

The Magnificent
A regular exhibition "goer" but
no journalist, these are the thoughts of
an enthusiastie amateur on the recently opened show at the Accademia
Italiana. The title "Renaissance Florence: The Age of Lorenzo de Medici"
(also known as Lorenzo the Magnificent), promises splendour and there is
no doubt that there are many exquisite
individual items on display. What
opportunities were missed though, especially at the beginning of the
exhibition, to envelop the visitor with
little or no knowledge of·Renaissance
Florence in the glories of the city.
The first gallery introduces us to
15th eentury Florence, the Mediei
family and architecture via manuscripts and books, several' on the life
of Lorenzo de Medici, a wooden
model of his villa at Poggio a Caiano
and an extremely rC<1listie photographic reproduction of the glazed
terracotta frieze which decorated the
villa. This was a subdued introduction
to the powerful Lorenzo and the
.
wcallhy city of Florence!
On then past the wcapons and
decorated armour worn in many a
tournament, one of the various types
or public spectacles employed by the
Medicis to asscrt their position.
At this stage make sure that you
have at lcast bought the £1 exhibition
guide if not the £18 catalogue! The
descriptions of the individual items on
display are minimal and there is no
additional information available in the
various rooms.
Keep going though and now you
will start to be rewarded visually. A
bC.1Utiful c.1ssone (traditionally given
as a wedding chest) by Giovanni di
Sei Giovanni, known as La Scheggia,
depicts a charming love story in a
series of vignettes. The nc.1rby painting on panel (more popular than
canvas in (15th century art) also by
La Scheggia illustrates people playing
a game of "civettino" similar to
"Statues" played today.
As you move into the section
devoted to religious life. you will
experience some of the rC<1l treasures
of the exhibition. These are the results
of church patronage and include the
beautiful miniature of the crucifixion
by Fra Angelico. The organ doors in
the middle of the room with singing

picture led it to be attributed to
Botticelli himself. The second painting, the Madonna del Mare (see
photo), is both exquisite and interesting. Its interest stems from the fact
that in the £1 guide it is attributed to

The Hill
Famiglia Viazzani
At the end of last month's column
we left Antonietta & Emesto enjoying
their wedding day in Bardi in the year
1924.
The happy couple settled down to
marital bliss in tile family home in
Cacrovoli. Living in the house at this
time were Nonna Antonia, who had
recently lost her husband, Antonio.
Antonietta's parents Assunta and Angelo, their other children, and numerous other family members.
Assunta had never really settled
down to life on the farm; she still
longed for the hustle and bustle of life
in '11 Quartiere Italiano'. Eventually a
eompromise was made: Angelo
brought her and the younger children
back to Britain, not to London, but to
Wales.
1926 found the family in Port Talbot\Aberavon, where other Bardigiani
had settled and 'prospered. It wasn't
very long before Assunta sent for the

newly-weds to join them in setting up
a small business, a general store. (See
the photograph below of Antonietta
with Emesto (wearing the trilby) and
Angelo standing outside the shop.)
Antonietta gave birth to her first son
VaIentino during this period.
Many of the Bardigiani families
who emigrated to South Wales in
those early years are still there today;
running busy ice', cream parlours, eafes, restaurants and fish shops. (If you
were to visit the market place in
Bardi during the month of August at
this present time; you would imagine
that you were in Wales, "indeed to
goodnesses", intermingling with the
Bardi dialect have to be heard to be
believed.)
1930 found our transient young
couple back in Cacrovoli, leaving the
business in South Wales to Angelo
and his brothers, Giovanni and Andrea. Their descendants 'and other
branches of the Viazzani family are
still thriving
in the valleys
today. Among
them, Antonio, son of the
above mentioned Giovanni is presently President of the
Amici Val
Ceno Galles.
Emesto on his
return to Cacrovoli proceeded to buy
up many of
the acres of
farmland,vineyards and
woodlands
surrounding
"11 Palazzo".
He also extended his
family and in
November
1930 their
second son
Vittorino \vas
born. These
were relatively contented ycars
for Antonietta. The farm was flourishingand her sons were growing up in
the healthy environment of the mountains, plenty of fresh air and home
grown produce. Antonietta,didn't partieularly like the work on the farm or
the rural life, and visits from relatives
in London unsettled her from time to
time. However there was a good
school in Bardi and the boys were
getting an excellent 'education, so she
made the best of it.
The Viazzarus were renowned for
their hospitality and tIieir expertise on
the music'side. Parties were the order
of the day: the Bardigianni love to
sing and dance. '11 Palazw' would
resound to the music supplied by Ernesto playing his violin, Valentino on
the accordion, accompanied by Vittorino with his guitar, and cousin Antonio on, the mandolin. Neighbours
and friends would spin round the capacious rooms waltzing and one stepping the night away. The piece de
resistance on these occasions would
be the arrival of'a second cousin,
Giuseppe Belli 'with his bagpipes.
This character was known as 'Pivan'
because he played the Piva (Zampogna). In his declining years Pivan
moved into the house where Anlonietta cared for him until his demise in
his 90th year.
Almost a decade had passed when
the threat of World War 2 and the
uncertainty of Italy's role in it became
a constant source of fear for all the
families, particularly those with relatives in England. When the inevitable
happened and Italy enlered on the
side of the Germans, the famiglia Viazzani like so many others, were in
the unhappy position of dealing with
the German Army on their land. At
the same time in England, Antonietta's father Angelo with his youngest
son Andrea were interned on the Isle
of Man due to the fact that they were
Italian nationals. Ironically, another
son Tonino was serving in the British
Army because he was born in England.
Despite the fact that Bardi was
just a small town on the mountainside,
it saw its fair share of bombs. The
American Air Force were constantly
trying to blow up a bridge that was

Following the Italian Armistice of
1943, in the light of the imminent
arrival of the Germans in the town,
Antonietta became fearful for the
safety of her elder son Valentino,
who, although just a teenager was a
well developed lad and appeared
older than his years; the worry being
that the Germans might have taken
him to be a partisan, in which case
there was a likelihood of him being
shot. There was a house down in the
village that had an outhouse with a
large cellar and it was here that VaIentino and some of the other young
boys were hidden, the trap door to the
cellar was covered with bales of hay,
and there they stayed until the Germans left the town.
As it turned out this was a wise
move, because the Germans picked on
'Il Palazzo' to use as their headquarters. They turned Antoniella and her
family out of their beds and made
them wait on them. No door in the
house was ever allOwed to be sbut,
and the lights were Icft on all night.
They atc the family out of house and
home and would play nasty tricks on
them, For instance, there was a
chicken who had !>ecome a family
pet, she was affectionately named
Quacciona (Squaller) lllld always answered to ber name. Ernesto took a
deligbt in exhibiting Quaceionna's
tricks to the Germans. Out of pure
nastiness they killed her and made the
family cook her for their consumption. Antoniella told me that in order
to keep the Germans sweet she always
smiled at them. f1allered tbem and
told tbem hO\v nice they were."Oi

she said. "Wc even pretended to cry
when they finally left".

Antonietta was worrying about her
son and the other boys, who, although
they had taken food and drink down
into the cellar with them, must now
be in need of further supplies. She
went to the Captain who spoke a
smanering of Italian and asked him if
he would like her to go and get some
fine wines, whieh she knew the
whereabouts of down in the nearby
village.
He agreed that she should go, and
supplied her with the password "Vera
Verona" which she would need to get
past the sentries on her way down.
She donned a large cloak, and concealed enough food under it to sustain
the boys for a while. She set off her
on perilous missioa and as sbe passed
through the sentries she would answer
the shouts of "Aebtung" with "Vera
Verona". First she went to the wine
cellars, knowing that the boys would
also be needing a drink. As she approached the outhouse she found to
her dismay that the adjoining building
was occupied by a fierce group of
Mongoli (soldiers from Mongolia, of
the kind who raped the mother and
daughter in the film "Two Women").
Undeterred ,by the sight of these
terrifying men, who were in lhe process of skinning a sbeep, she gave
them several bottles of rough wine
and quietly turned ,the lock on the
door. She then went into the outhouse
and set about moving the bales of hay
which concealed the lrap door. She
hastily passed the food and drink
dOI\n to lhe boys, Giving Valentino a
brief hug. she climbed out of the cellar, closed the trap door and replaced
the b.1Ies. On her way out she uno'
locked the door where the Mongoli'
were; they were too drunk by this
lime to be aware of an)1hing. She
Valentino and ViI/aria - the war years
began the hazardous journey back to
her home hoping that she wouldn't be
questioned as to the length of time
she had taken to get the, by now,
somewhat deplenished bollles of
wine. Fortunately as she entered the
house, she was spoiled by a neighbour
who said "Be careful, you have a lot
of straw in your hair!", She managed
to brush herself down in time and
with her mission accomplished, presented the wine to the Captain with
her, by now, expert ingratiating manner.
As the war progressed and the Allied Armies were approaching, the
Germans began to retreat. As they left
the house they took all of the remaining livestock with them, and as a
parting shot, they fired their machine
guns into the beehives. Their final
dispeno was to make Ernesto walk in
front of them as they left the town,
just in case some of the Partisans in
the hills took a shot at them.

a very private gathering of only close
family.
The reception was held at The
Ponland Hotel. Bloomsbury and the
couple left for their honeymoon in
Sorrento the following day.

I Lombardi
It was with great pleasure that the
Amiei di Verdi presented I Lombardi
Alia Prima Croeiata in a concen
performance of the complete opera. It
featured, for the first time, the Amici
di Verdi chorus. It was superbly
dirccted by Nina Walker and accompanied by two pianos and four pianists.
I Lombardi is one of Verdi's early
operas - and what an opera. I know I
have a very soft spot for all early
Verdi - well, come to that, all Verdi.
Lombardi contains a wealth of wonderful choruses and from the first one
I realised that this chorus knew how
to deliver the goods.
The story - Pagano (baritone Mark Beesley) plans to kill his
brother, Arvino (tenor - Julian Gavin)
whose wife he desires - but he kills
his father by mistake and for repentence for his crime he becomes a
hermit in the Holy Land. Arvino goes
to the Holy Land on the First Crusade

1. 11 dialogo bilaterale tra CattoIici
e Luterani ha vissuto, nel 1992, un
momento culmine ricorrendo i.25 anni
da1 suo inizio. La ricorrenza e' stata
sottolineata in vari incontri. 11 23
aprile e' stata ricevuta da Giovanni
Paolo II una delegazione della Federazione Luterana Mondiale (FLM)
composta da 8 persone e guidata da1
suo Prcsidente, Dr Gottfried Brakemeier. e da1 segretario generale, Dr.
Gunar Staalsett. 11 9 novembre. durante una cerimonia ad Eisenach (Germania). si e' fatto un apprezzamento
sui risultati del dialogo.
2. Per poter valutare. intanto, la
misura del consenso raggiunto. non si
deve dimenticare iI punto di partenza
del dialogo, prima del Coneilio Vaticano II: per oltrc 400 anni non vi c'
stato nessun dialogo ufficiale tra
CattoIici e Luterani. Questi secoli
sono stati caratterizzati da rivalita' e.
spesso, persino da ostilita'. 11 dialogo,
iniziato nel 1967, ha inaugurato un
"nuovo capitolo nei rapporti
cattolico-Iuterani", come ha sottoIineato iI 9 novembre iI Presidente del
Pontificio ConsigIio per la Promozione dell'unita' dei cristiani. Cardinale
Edward C3ssidy. 11 dialogo ha superato prgiudizi e ostilita' e ha creato
un'atmosfera di fiducia recipr'oca.
3. Nell'udienza summenzionata
del 23 aprile alia delegazione della
FLM, Papa Giovanni Paolo II ha
messo in evidenza come "negli anni
trascorsi dal Concilio Vaticano Secondo. Luterani e Cattolici hanno fatto
molto progrsso sulla via del superamento delle barriere di separazione e
nel rafforzamenlo dei legami di
unita·. per mezzo sia ~el dialogo
teologico sia di una cooperazione
pratica".
Nella sua replica iI Presidente
Brakemaier ha sottoline.~to quanto sia
necessario "intraprendere ulteriori
passi in comune" e ha pregalo iI Papa
di incoraggiare e sollecitare "tali
passi concreli verso I·unita· ... 11 momento culminante che ha concluso

4. Una valutazione critica sullo
stato attuale dei rapporti cattoIiciluterani e' stata fatta anche durante la
riunione del Consiglio della FLM
tenutasi a Madras (India) dal 13 al 23
settembre: 11 ConsigIio della FLM e' iI
piu' allo organo deliberante della
Federazione; si riunisce ogni anno e
resta in carica per 7 anni.
Nel suo resoconto iI Segretario
Generale per gIi Mari Ecumenici.
Eugene Brand, ha osservato "Noi
vogliamo ringraziare Dio perche' ha
guidato i rapporti tra le nostre due
Comunioni su strade radicalmente diverse da quelle percorse dopo la
Riforma". Durante la riunione e' stata
oggetto di vivaci discussioni la lettera
della Congregazione per la Dottrina
della Fede ai vescovi cattolici "su
alcuni aspetti della Chiesa come
Comunionc".
In una dichiarazione riguardante la
ricorrenza dei 25 anni di dialogo
cattolico-Iuterano. jJ Consiglio della
FLM ha sottolineato quanto sia necessario oggi i1.processo di ricezione dei
risultati dei dialoghi: "La ricezione
richiede una nuova spiritualita·. catterizzata dall'aperatura ecumenica e
dalla partecipazione reciproca. dalla
disponibilita' a modificare i modelli di
vita a cui si e' abituati". Ma nello
stesso tempo iI Consiglio della FLM
.ha espresso delusione poiche' una tale
visione non c' stata ancora accolta a
tutti i Iivelli: "Noi non possiamo
permettere che la nostra visione sia
oscurata da momentance difficolta·.
Al contrario dobbiamo agire e parlare
in futuro con una fermezza tale da
infondere in tutli i fedeIi la consapevolezza e I'impegno ecumenico".
5. Nei discorsi tenuti iI 9 novembre ad Eisenach e' stata espiessa la

panoramica della siluazione ecumenica attua1e. 11 cardinale Edward
Cassidy. inoltre. esponendo le prospettive per 10 sviluppo deldialogo ha

nostri interlocutori... In secondo luogo
esiste, sia per i CattoIici che per i
Luterani, I'urgentc necessita' di
promuovere una coscienza ecumenica
nelle nostre comunita..•. E. con enfasi. ha sottoIineato: "La sincerita' e
I'impegno della Federazione Luterana
Mondiale e della Chiesa CattoIica
Romana riguardo l'impegno ecumenico c' per me motivo di speranza
per iI futuro successo del nostro
dialogo".
6. La scopo del dialogo e' inequivocabile: Luterani e CattoIici desiderano I'unita' concreta nella Chiesa
Una. Nel 25smo anno del dialogo
cattoIico-Iuterano oceorrc ricordare
che e' stato raggiunto. intanto, un
ampio consenso soprattutto nel campo
della dottrina della Giustificazone e
dell·Eucaristia. Dalle diScussioni suI
Ministero Ordinato risultava che le
divergenze piu' profonde riguardano
una diversa visionc della Chiesa. Per
questo motivo I'attuale fase del dialogo che si concludera' quest'anno si
occupa della ecelesiologia.
7. Ncgli anni scorsi si e' notato
come i progressi nel dialogo teologico
abbiano influilo positavamente anche
sulla cooPerazione pratica. A Ginevra,
iI 4 e 5 dicembre scorso. durante la
riunione annuale del Gruppo Misto tra
la FLM e iI Ponlificio Consiglio per
l'Unita' dei Cristiani, e' venuto nuovamenle in evidenza quanto i progressi teologici e i progressi nella
cooperazione pralica siano strettamente connessi I'uno con I·altro. Non
si possono superare le divisioni dedicandosi solo ai problemi dottrinali:
una maggiore cooperazione a tutti i
Iivelli ha instaurato, come conseguenza fiducia che consente di reagire

mo Italian-born priests were
among those who set sail on the
Arandora Star from Liverpool on I
July 1940: Fr. Gaetano Fracassi, parish priest of St. Alban's, Ancoats,
Manchester, who lost his life in the
sinking, a fact still commemorated in
the annual memorial Mass in Manchester, and the London-based Fr.
Guido Toncker who survived and
eventually was permitted to return to
Italy while the war was still in
progrcs~, an event which has attracted
little attention and which has rcccivCd
only passing mcntion in the annals of
the Italian community in Britain. This
fragmentary account is merely an
outline of the eareer of this little
known cleric who served the Italians
in Scotland and later those in London's Soho and who briefly made the
news headlines in the wake of the loss
of the Arandora Star.
"LONDON ITALIAN PRIEST
GAVB ABSOLUTION TO DROWNING INTERNEES OF THE ARANDORA STAR" proclaimed the C"ltholic Herald in September 1940. Re."Iders were informed of the last few
moments of the stricken liner as
observed by Fr. Toncker, who only
minutes earlier had been roused from
his sleep by an officer, re."Iehed one of
the decks, managed to board onc of
the life boats and with other survivors
looked on while the Arandora Star
sank in the Atlantic. According to Fr.
Toncker. from his vantage point in a
crowded boat, the liner gave two slow
rolls and a forward slant before
standing suddcnly on cnd - hurling
many of the crcw, guards and internees who had failed to gain plaees on
the life boats or rafts into the cold se."1
water - before making a final plunge.
Aftcr some hours in the Atlantic,
Fr. Toncker was among the more
fortunate who were picked up by a
rescue ship and landed some time
later with other survivors at a port on
the west coast of Scotland. His health
had not been too good before internment: the ordeal on the Arandora Star
and the rescue necessitated a lengthy
period of hospitalis."Ition and even in
September 1940 Fr. Toncker was still
not strong enough to offer Mass.
However, he assured the Herald rep resent."Itive that once he had recovered

he was detennined to offer a Mass for
the Arandora Star victims. It was
presumably aftcr Fr. Toncker had
recuperated more fully that he was
allowed to join a party of others who
were rcpatriated to Italy on the
grounds of their age or ilI-heallh.
Fr. Toncker, like Fr. Fracassi, was
a secular priest: whether the two were
acquainted is not know. However, Fr.

Gaetano Rossi (also interned in 1940)
was aware of Fr. Toncker's service in
the Glasgow diocese prior to his own
ordination there in 1939. While Frs.
Fracassi and Rossi were for a time
fellow-inmates at Warth Mill, Bury,
Fr. Toncker appears not to have been
there; evidence that not all Italians
were screened and selected at that
particular transit camp. One place
where Fr. Toncker was held was the
Ascot Internment Camp since that is
where the seventeen-ycar-old Albert
Cavalli encountered him; allhough
both resided in London they had not
previously known each other.
Christine 10hnson, in her Scottish
Catholic Secular Clergy, 1870-1989
(1991), states that Fr. Toncker was
ord."Iined in 1909 and prior to his
arrival in Scotland was at Santa Maria
Inviolata in Rome. In Glasgow he
resided at 90 Portugal Street, a house
in SI. 10hn's parish. The Guida Generale.. .I936 describes Fr. Toncker as
"Ass. Religiosa degli Italiani di Scozian.
Past issues of the Catholic Directory indicate that Fr. Toncker was
alrc."Idy in Glasgow by 1927 and his
name last appeared in the 1938 edition. Thereafter he disappears from
the pages of the Directory, apparently
joining the list of retired or sick

clergy. Moving from Glasgow to
Westminster he took up residence at
St. Charles Borromco, Ogle Street
from where he interested himself in
the welfare of the numerous Italians
engaged in the hotel and restaurant
trades. It was in this unobtrusive role
that he was detained within hours of
Italy's entry into World War 11. Henee
in 1940 the security services gave
high priority to
detaining the
three priests
charged with
the care of
Italians in the
key areas of
Glasgow, Manchester and
London, no
doubt in the
belief that thcy
were depriving
the Italian
community of its religious leadership.
The three priests were among the
4,000 held in 1940 and once secured
in various camps the authorities attempted to screen and select internees,
some for deportation, others to remain
here. Without revealing the criteria
employed, the experience of the three
clerics is not without interest. Fr.
Fracassi was 64, Fr. Toncker a few
years younger while Fr. Rossi was 24.
Fr. Rossi was not among those deported, eventually being moved 'to the
Isle of Man by way of Shropshire.
Frs. Fracassi and Toncker, by contrast,
elderly and in poor health, were
chosen to accompany others to
Canada. In an attempt to justify this
policy of deportation a government
minister would later maintain those
selected for deportation m:re "worth·
less mouths" unlikely (by implica'
tion) to be of much use to the war
effort but a drain on scaree resources.
Despite going through the trauma
of 1940 Fr. Toncker emerges from his
interview with the Catholic Herald as
a man who was remarkably philosophical about the whole episode.
And his commitment to the faith was
unimpaired: the reporter's observation
that he and Fr. Fracassi were on board
the Arandora Star for a purpose,
elicited the comment '''Si, si, it ~was
God's will".

A big night for the
"Amici'" and all present for
this Masterelass given by the
pre-eminent post war interpreter of Verdi. It proved, as
expected, to be a night to
remember, a memorable night
for all present and, I suspect,
an unforgettable night for the
singers taking part. They were
sopranos Heather Lorimer and
Katia Nikolic, tcnor Peter Ruanne, baritone David Ellis and
bass Paul Hodges. The chosen
items were, naturally, all Verdi
and consisted of arias from "I
Lombardi", "La Traviata", '-'.
Macbeth", "Don Carlo" and
"La Forza del Destino..·. All
the singers did themselves justice and Signor Bergonzi
praised them all. To quote the
maestro, "I had good material
to work with".
At the cnd of the elass the
audience were invited to ask
questions. These were readily
forthcoming and the Maestro
answered each question readily. At his side was Maria
Cleva, a Trustee of the Amici,.
acting as interpreter. Carlo had
requested that she be close at
hand despite the fact that his
English is much belter than he
himself thinks!
At the piano for the Masterclass was the incomparable Nina
Walker who has accompanied many
of the great singers of the world in
concert and recordings including,
Monserrat Caballe, Jose Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, Rrloul Gimcncz and
many others. For the young singers to
have the opportunity of working wilh
Nina was a big bonus and I know
much appreciated by them.
It was interesting to spot many
singers in the audicnce, among them
Valerie Masterson, Giuseppe Sabbatini (eurrelllly singing the role of
Lcnsky at the Royal Opcra House)
and Bcn Luxon. There were also

many young singers present and they
too must have picked up some useful
tips.
At the finish of Ihe evening our
Chairman, Richard Hazell, presented
the Maestro with an "Amici di Vcrdi" plate as a memento of the
occasion.
11 was a joy to see this great Verdi
stylist imparting some of the knowl·
edge gained after 45 ye.1fs in opera.
His vocal demonstrations were the
highlight of Ihe evening and it was
fascin.1ting to hc.1r him sing in what
he referred 10 as the incorrect method
of vocal produelion and then show
Maestro Bergonzi at Busseto
how il should be done. I am sure that
we would all have wished for even
more examples of his art. Even in
such brief examples we could observe
all the familiar virtues, breath control,
diction, colour and his impeccable
legato. Where, 0 where, will wc find a
successor?
To think that from the same

and Bergonzi, 10 say nothing of the

I was not surprised but was disappointed that the man whose name has

Trote Salmonate Farcite
Ingredienti
Ingredients
4 trote private di testa· e spine
3 cucehiai di mollica di pane
1 cipolla piccola tritata
:i cucehiai di olio
4 cucehiai di latte
30gr mandorJe (pellate, tostatee tritate)
1 cucehiaio di parmigiano
1 cucehiaio di' erbe miste
salCtpepe
1/2 Iimone
1 uova
20gr di mandorle pelatee tagliate a fettine
4 cucehiai di vino bianco seceo
4 trout with head and bones removed
3 tablespoons of breadcrumbs
1 small onion finely chopped
4 tablespoons milk
2 tablespoons of oil
1 egg
salt/pepper
1/2 lemon
2 oz'almonds (blanched, toasted and chopped)
cheese
1 tablesPoon
1 tablespoon of dried mixed herbs
1 oz blanched almonds finely sliced
5 tablespoons of dry white wine
parmesan

Metodo
Method
Inzuppate la mollica di pane con iI latte. Fate friggere
leggermente la cipolla nell'olio. Unite iI Sale, 'n pepe ed
erbe. Amalgamate iI somtto aI pane. Aggiungete I'uovo, le
mandorle tostate ed iI parmigiano. Riempite I'intemo delle
trote con iI ripieno. Mettete in una pirofila imburrata, iI vino,
iI suco del Iimone e le trote. Mettete le a1tie mandorJe sulla
superfice delle trote. Coprite con carta argentata. Passate nel
fomo pre-scaJdato 190Clno.5 per 25 minuti. Togliete la carta
e continuate la cottura per allri 10 minuti.
Soak the breadcrumbs in the milk. Lightly fry the
onion in the oil. Add salt, pepper and dried herbs. Mix
the onion mixture with the bread. Add egg,' toasted
almonds and parmigiano. Put some of the mixture into
each trout. Place the trout into a greased baking dish,
with the wine and lemon juice. Place the sliced
almonds over each trout. Cover with silver foil. Place
in pre-heated oven 190Clno.5 for 25 minutes. Remove
silver foil and continue cooking for further 10 minutes.
Melanzane Ripiene
Stuffed Aubergines
Ingredienti
Ingredients
2 melanzane
3 cucehiai di olio
150 gr di olive verdi
1 porro trittato
50 gr di capperi lavati
1 x 50 gr scatola di aceiughe sott'olio
1 cucehiaio di parmigiano gratiugiato
250 gr passato di pomodoro (pomi')
1 mimata di preZzemolo'
1 cucehiano di zucehero
salelpepe
1 foglia di alloio
2 aubergines
3 tablespoons oil
1 leek finely chopped
6 oz green olives
1 x 20z tin anchovies in oil
2 oz capers, washed
1 tablespoon of grated parmesan cheese
80z sieved tomatoes (pomi)
1 handful chopped parsley
teaspsoon of sugar
1 bay leaf
salt/pepper

Method
Tagliate le melanzane in felle sottile nel senso ella
lunghezza. MettetaJe in un colino. Cospargetele di sale e
lasciatele per 1 .ora. Asciugatele. Sistematele leggermente
sovrapposte su una placca del fomo imburrata. Passatele nel
.fomo pre-scaldato 190Clno.5 per 10 minuti.
11 Ripieno: Tritate meta' delle olive, i capperi, le aceiughe
ed iI prezzemolo. Aggiungete iI pannigiano e 1 cucehiaio di
olio. Amalgamate tutti gli ingredienti assieme. Spalmate un
po' del ripieno su ogni fetta di melanzana e arrotolatela.
11 Sugo: Fate soffrigere iI porro in 2 cucehiai di olio.
Aggiungete iI pomi', iI sale, iI pepe, 10 zucehero e l'alloro.
Cueinate per 1/2 ora. Sistemate i rotoli di melanzane in una
teglia imburrata e iI resto delle olive. Versatevi sopra la
salsa. Coprite con carta argentata. Passatela nel fomo
pre-scaldata 190/n05. per 30 minuti.
Cut the aubergines lengthwise into thin slices. Put
them in a colander. SprillkJe salt over them and leave
for 1 hour. Dry. Place them slightly overlapping on a
greased baking ray: Put them in a pre-heated oven
190Clno.5 for 10 minutes.
Stuffing: Chop the capers, anchovies and parsley and
half the olives. Add the parmesan and 1 tablespoon of
oil. Mix all these ingredients together, Spread a little
of this stuffing onto each aubergine slice and roll.
Sauce: Lightly fry the leek in 2 tablespoon of oil. Add
pomi', salt, pepper, sugar and bay leaf and cook for
1/2 hour. Place the aubergines in a greased oven proof
dish. Add the rest of the oliveS. Pour over the sauce.
Cover with silver foil. Place in pre-heated oven
