President’s Message / Rapporto del Presidente
So the end of another year has come!
E così la fine di un altro anno è arrivato – e per
alcuni è stato meglio in confronto ad altri ....
Pensiamo a molti dei nostri amici che ci hanno
lasciato quest’anno, nuovi bambini nati, matrimoni
e compleanni celebrati e ricordiamo molti occasioni belle e anche triste condivisi qui al Club.
Mi augurò che il Club sarà sempre così per tutti
noi – un luogo dove si può ridere e piangere insieme circondati da famiglia e amici.
Grazie a tutti coloro che ci hanno supportato
quest’anno e va senza dire che la sopravvivenza
del club dipende sul vostro sostegno.
For some the year has been better than others.
We think of many of our friends who have left us
this year, new grandchildren and children that were
born, weddings and birthdays celebrated.
We remember many good and sad times shared at
the Italian club.
I hope that the Italian club will always be that for all
of us. A place where we can laugh and cry together with our friends and family.
Thank you to everyone who supported us this year,
it goes without saying that the survival of the club is
reliant on your support.
Abbiamo raggiunto molti dei nostri obiettivi
quest’anno e speriamo di costruire su questi nei
prossimi anni.
We have achieved so many of our initial goals this
year and hope to build on these in the next.
Stiamo in attesa di una stagione di feste divertente dando il via con il “nuovo look” per il Natale
per i Bimbi” il 16 Dicembre e diamo il benvenuto
al nuovo anno con un “tocco” di carnevale!
We are looking forward to a bright and festive holiday season kicking off with the “new look” children
Christmas party and going into the new year with a
carnival flair!

We recently lost a very dear friend— Michele Sforza who passed away on 12 November
2014. He was a member of the Italian club for many years.
He will be sadly missed by so many. Thank you for your friendship and service to our club.
Our condolences to the Sforza family. May you rest in peace.

Michele (Dad), was very passionate and proud about his Italian heritage and as his kids he
kept on pushing us to get involved at the Italian Club as this is where he loved spending
his time. If you couldn't find him in the Bocce Dromo then you would sure find him sitting in
the restaurant having great fun and enjoying himself with his friends and or family. We
would like to thank all His Friends at the Club for your amazing support especially to the
President Chrystal Grauso and her Management Committee as well as to Paolo and Team
at Fratelli Palmieri. Our father is smiling above and I know he is grateful for everything you
have done for his family. As Michele's son I will continue his legacy at the Italian Club as
this was his dream.

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE—
SUNDAY 2ND NOVEMBER 2014
The Italian Club of Cape Town once again this year hosted the commemoration of the Italian prisoners of war fallen in South Africa. A sombre
occasion with the participation of the Italian Consul, Dr E M Vitali, Pd
Gerardo Garcia who celebrated Mass, WO Giuseppe Ricci who officiated
the proceedings, various dignatories and a large audience under the tent
erected in front of the Wall of Remembrance on which were affixed the
plaques that recall the prisoners who still rest in the cemetery of
Worcester but whose remains will be transferred next year to the cemetery shrine at Zonderwater.

Domenica 2 Novembre 2014
Il Club Italiano di Città del Capo ha ospitato anche quest'anno la
commemorazione dei prigionieri di guerra italiani caduti in Sud Africa. Una funzione sobria, con la partecipazione di un pubblico numeroso sotto il tendone eretto davanti al Muro della Rimembranza,
sul quale sono state apposte le lapidi che ricordano i prigionieri
che ancora riposano nel cimitero di Worcester ma le cui spoglie
saranno traslate l'anno prossimo nel cimitero-sacrario di Zonderwater.
Padre Gerardo Garcia, nuovo parroco della chiesa della Santa
Croce nel District Six e cappellano della comunità italiana, ha
benedetto le tre sezioni del muro, dove sono ricordati anche i
fondatori e benefattori del club, e ha celebrato la messa. Il console
Edoardo Vitali, che il giorno prima aveva partecipato con il sacerdote e con una rappresentanza della comunità a una commemorazione nel cimitero di Worcester, ha notato con piacere che i partecipanti di ieri erano anche più numerosi di quelli dell'anno scorso
e ha ricordato che la celebrazione di quest'anno si è inserita nel
più vasto quadro della iniziative per il centenario dello scoppio della Grande Guerra. Durante la messa ha come sempre provveduto
alle letture Giovanni Borsero (a destra nella foto, accanto al console Vitali), del quale è stata poi ricordata la distinzione di essere
fra i presenti l'unico ad aver partecipato, da volontario diciassettenne, alla Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
Ha pilotato le varie fasi della celebrazione il Warrant Officer
Giuseppe Ricci, mentre in rappresentanza del Comites ha parlato
il consigliere Raffaele Panebianco, il quale ha dato lettura di un

messaggio di congedo del presidente della locale sezione dell'Associazione degli ex prigionieri di
guerra del Zonderwater Block, professor Mino Caira - assente per motivi di lavoro -, contenente fra
l'altro l'annuncio della sua decisione di sciogliere la sezione stessa perché - a suo giudizio - resa
ormai ridondante dall'inesorabile trascorrere del tempo e dalla graduale scomparsa dei prigionieri
stessi.
"Noi - ha detto in sostanza Panebianco - siamo qui per perpetuare il ricordo dei prigionieri morti in
Sud Africa e riteniamo che questo debba continuare anche in futuro, motivo per cui, come Club Italiano e come Comites, intendiamo tenere in vita l'associazione Zonderwater Block e questa commemorazione".
I rappresentanti di enti e associazioni della comunità italiana del Capo hanno deposto omaggi floreali ai piedi del Muro della Rimembranza. Marisa e Uliano Marchiò hanno come sempre sottolineato i
momenti più significativi della cerimonia con le note dei canti appropriati. Ciro Ferrone ha come
sempre provveduto alla tecnologia per garantire la colonna sonora dell'evento, dal Silenzio agli inni
nazionali dell'Italia e del Sud Africa.
