La Biennale di Venezia, on the occasion of the
2013 Festa del Redentore, will host in its terrace
at Ca’ Giustinian, the usual fund-raising dinner for the
Asac (Historical Archive of the Contemporary Arts).
Each year, in line with tradition, at sunset, hundreds
of boats lit by paper lanterns and decorated with
baubles and leafy branches, arrive in the
Bacino di San Marco and Canale della Giudecca.
Amidst music and songs, people eat a meal based
around local dishes while they await the grand fireworks
display lasting more than thirty minutes and leading
up to midnight, which lights up the sky and waters of
Venice with lights and colours.

La nuova Biblioteca della Biennale è parte integrante dello storico
Padiglione Centrale ai Giardini, a seguito del progetto
di trasformazione nella nuova struttura polifunzionale.
Il suo restauro è stato completato nel 2010 con l’apertura della
nuova, grande sala di lettura, circondata da un ballatoio su due
livelli su cui sono disposti oltre 800 metri lineari di scaffalature
con 134.000 volumi, di cui il 40% a scaffale aperto, relativi a
cataloghi, monografie, testi e collane di tutti i Settori di attività
della Biennale: Arti Visive, Architettura, Cinema, Musica, Teatro,
Danza. La Biblioteca si caratterizza fortemente per la presenza di
tutti i cataloghi della Biennale dalla prima edizione dell’Esposizione
d’Arte del 1895, cui si aggiungono da quella data acquisizioni
di cataloghi di mostre da tutto il mondo, con una raccolta di oltre
70.000 volumi tra le più complete a disposizione di studiosi
e ricercatori. Dovendo identificare una linea guida nella politica
di acquisizioni per gli anni a venire, si è avviata dal 2009 “la
Bibliografia della Mostra”: gli artisti e architetti invitati alle Mostre
inviano le pubblicazioni per loro più significative relative alle opere
esposte. L’iniziativa si è dimostrata efficace e sono stati raccolti
900 volumi all’anno per Arte e Architettura. Nuove acquisizioni
derivano anche da un’intensa e proficua attività di scambio tra
istituzioni. La Biblioteca è aperta tutto l’anno, accessibile anche
dalla Calle del Paludo Sant’Antonio, nonché durante i periodi di
apertura delle Mostre, anche il Sabato e la Domenica.
The new Biennale Library is an integral part of the historic Central
Pavilion in the Giardini, following the project that transformed it
into a new multifunctional structure. Its renovation was completed
in 2010 with the opening of the new large reading room,
surrounded by a two-level catwalk with over 800 linear metres
of stacks accommodating 134,000 volumes, out of which 40%
are open stacks, concerning to catalogues, monographs, essays
and series of publications featuring all Sections of La Biennale di
Venezia: Visual Arts, Architecture, Cinema, Music, Theatre, Dance.
The availability of all Biennale’s catalogues since the first Art
Exhibition in 1895 deeply characterize the library. Since 1895
catalogues of Exhibition from all around the world were collected
in our library. The collection counts over 70.000 volumes and is
among the most complete at disposal of researchers and experts.
An initiative started in 2009 has drawn the guide lines for the
years to come, with the name “The Exhibition’s Bibliography”
the artists and the architects that participated at the Exhibitions
provide remarkable essays about the artworks exposed. So far
the number of publications donated every year reach the figure of
900 volumes for Art and Architecture Biennale. New acquisitions
are possible thanks to an intense and fruitful exchange activities
between institutions. The library is open during all the year, it’s
possible to access also from Calle del Paludo Sant’Antonio, even
on Saturdays and Sundays during the Exhibitions period.

I documenti e i materiali (foto, cataloghi, rassegne stampa, ritagli
ecc.) che testimoniano le attività di tutti i Settori (Arti Visive,
Architettura, Cinema, Danza, Musica e Teatro) della Biennale
di Venezia sono conservati presso il suo Archivio Storico delle Arti
Contemporanee (ASAC). Attualmente il Fondo storico (il cuore
dell’archivio) e le collezioni di manifesti, foto e lastre, periodici,
spartiti, raccolta documentaria, mediateca e fondo artistico,
sono conservati nella sede presso il Parco Scientifico Tecnologico
VEGA di Porto Marghera, consultabili da parte del pubblico
(studenti, ricercatori, critici, ecc.), grazie anche a interventi di
restauro e riordino realizzati in questi ultimi anni in collaborazione
anche con la Soprintendenza archivistica per il Veneto.
La Biblioteca ha sede invece nel Padiglione Centrale
ai Giardini di Castello.
Grazie alla sistemazione e catalogazione dei Fondi, ogni anno
vengono allestite specifiche mostre presso la sede di Ca’ Giustinian,
in collaborazione con i diversi Settori.
Nel 2011 è stata realizzata la mostra “Italia: 150 / Biennale: 116.
Tutti i manifesti di 116 anni di vita in Mostra”, attualmente ancora
in corso nel Portego. Di prossima realizzazione la mostra “Video
d’artista degli anni Settanta dalle collezioni della Biennale”.
L’ ASAC ha continui rapporti di collaborazione e di scambio, in vari
ambiti, con Istituzioni culturali ed educative e di conservazione,
italiane e straniere.
The documents and material (photos, catalogs, press reviews,
clippings etc.) marking the activities of all Sectors (Visual Arts,
Architecture, Cinema, Dance, Music and Theatre) of La Biennale
di Venezia are preserved in the Archivio Storico delle Arti
Contemporanee (ASAC). The historic Fund (the heart of the
archive) and the collections of posters, photos and plates,
magazines, sheet music, documents, audiovisual library and
artistic fund are currently preserved in the building in the Parco
Scientifico Tecnologico VEGA in Porto Marghera, and is open
to the public (students, researchers, critics etc.), following the
interventions of renovation and reorganiziation of the last few
years, which have been carried out in cooperation with the
Soprintendenza archivistica per il Veneto.
The Library is located in the Central Pavilion in the Giardini
di Castello. Following the reorganization and cataloguing of the
Funds, thematic exhibitions are set up every year in the Ca’ Giustinian
building, in cooperation with all Sections.
In 2011, the exhibition “Italia: 150 / Biennale: 116. Tutti i manifesti
di 116 anni di vita in Mostra” was presented, which is currently
open in the Portego. The forthcoming show is entitled “Video
d’artista degli anni Settanta dalle collezioni della Biennale”.
The ASAC has constant relations of cooperation and exchange
with cultural, educational and preservation institutions, both
in Italy and abroad, spanning several areas of interest.
