I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace, peace for his people. His help is near for those who fear him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, alleluia! May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts that we might see how great is the hope to which we are called. Alleluia! EUCHARISTIC PRAYER VARIOUS NEEDS 1I RECENTLY DECEASED Delia Boccabella of Blyth Street, Caterina Cirillo of Brunswick Road ANNIVERSARIES Dot Hardstaff, Piera Cugno, Vittorio Pittorino DIVINELY LOVED As St Paul would have put it in terms of modern science, before the cosmos was ‘big-banged’ into existence, before human creatures evolved over the aeons, before you were loved into existence through your parents, God conceived of you, ‘God chose you in Christ’. The universe was erupted into existence by Divine Ecstasy so that creatures might be drawn to evolve into human beings so that you, personally, might enjoy a wonderful destiny. That destiny is to be an ensouled body totally transfigured by Divine Light, made radiant by Divine Energy, living through love in God’s presence. That is the Big Picture, the ‘Very Big Picture’. Grasp that, or rather be grasped by that, and it will enable you to do things you would otherwise not risk doing. One way could be that portrayed in today’s Gospel. Jesus could say to his missionary followers: “take no purse, no haversack” because they had an interior freedom from anxiety about the future, a freedom generated from knowing that they had been divinely loved even before time began. You might take a moment to pray for the courage to make a generous response to the truth spoken directly to you by St Paul. ‘Before the world was made, He chose you, chose you in Christ.’ Fr Michael Tate APOSTLESHIP OF THE SEA Today is known as ‘Sea Sunday’. At our Masses this weekend we pray for all seafarers working on vessels throughout the world. And we pray for the chaplains of the Apostleship of the Sea in their pastoral ministry. LAUDATO SI’ – FINAL CALL FOR ORDERS Pope Francis’ latest encyclical, Laudato Si’: On the Care of our Common Home, is an impassioned plea to focus on the common good. Pope Francis calls us to integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, ‘so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.’ He sees the environmental problem as part of a much larger, more serious problem: Our failure to consistently recognise the truth that everyone and everything is interconnected. The parish has ordered 50 copies of the encyclical. If you would like to purchase a copy (about $13), please sign your name on the list in the gathering space. We will examine the encyclical in further detail during our regular August Winter Series on prayer and spirituality. DATES FOR YOUR DIARY ADVANCE NOTICE: During the month of August there will be two evenings on ways of praying with Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’. On each evening a particular method of prayer will be highlighted. The dates are: ♦ Wednesday 19 August, ‘An hour of Taize Prayer’ – with chant, iconography, reflections from Laudato Si’ and silence. ♦ Wednesday 26 August, An introduction to Lectio Divina. Reading and praying Laudato Si’ in the contemplative style of Lectio Divina. Both evenings are from 7.30 – 8.30pm (followed by supper) in the Spirituality Room of St Ambrose’s Community Centre. Keep those dates free! More details over the next few weeks. RUN MELBOURNE Parishioner, Chris Morris will be running in the 5km ‘Run Melbourne 2015: Say Yes to refugees!’ on Sunday 26 July. A REFLECTION FROM LAUDATO SI’ Christian spirituality proposes an alternative understanding of the quality of life, and encourages a prophetic and contemplative lifestyle, one capable of deep enjoyment free of the obsession with consumption. We need to take up an ancient lesson, found in different religious traditions and also in the Bible. It is the conviction that ‘less is more’. PARISH PRAYER FOCUS FOR JULY We pray for Pope Francis.
