Sculpture Currently Updating is the result of a collaboration between Fondazione Palazzo
Strozzi and the European Institute of Design ('IED') featuring artworks by students from
Fondazione Studio Marangoni, the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze and LABA
('Libera Accademia di Belle Arti'). This project derives its thematic inspiration from certain
considerations of sculpture's existence over time and, more specifically, from the exhibitions
currently showing at Palazzo Strozzi and Strozzina - Power and Pathos, Bronze Sculpture of
the Hellenistic World and Sculptures also Die. The exhibition will be curated and organised
by Masters students from IED as their final semester project.
The exhibition will be presented in two separate locations, IED (Via Maurizio Bufalini, 6/R)
and ZAP (Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore, 1), and will feature 24 artists across both
exhibition locations. The artworks have been created by the following emerging artists:
Edoardo Berti, Diego Bocchino, Duccio Doretti, Elena Fiorini, Chiara Giromini, Cecilia
Lentini, Gianluca Leonardi, Agnese Mammana, Hazhir Mehravaran, Martina Melchionno,
Mattia Micheli, Elisabetta Pallini, Sulmaz Purhadi, Giovanni Ricci,Camilla Riccò, Francesca
Sanesi, Caterina Scardillo, Sabina Tangorra, Antonio Turrisi, Margherita Villani, Pietro Viti,
Chen Ying and Cai Yingfei.
The opening of the exhibition will take place on 25 June 2015 at IED at 6pm and then at ZAP
at 8pm, at which time a formal introductory presentation will be conducted with Florentine
curator Daria Filardo, who has supervised the IED students, and art educator and mediator
Martino Margheri from Palazzo Strozzi.

PRESS RELEASE
Sculpture Currently Updating is about contemporary interpretations of sculpture, including
the life of a sculpture over time and, moreover, how a particular artwork can be understood as
existing not only as a stand alone object, but within a continuum of creative expression. The
artists will use various mediums to explore these ideas including sculpture, photography,
installation, performance and video.
The IED students were presented with numerous artworks from the participating art
academies, which varied greatly in medium and content. As the exhibition title suggests, the
selected artworks feature highly contemporary subject matters including: the intersection of
material, memory and time in contemporary sculpture; the loss of information over time; the
destruction of artworks through political violence; and issues regarding the digital creation of
an artwork. Many of the artworks are self-reflexive and play with the idea of recreation and
reinterpretation of artistic concepts and materials. The final result is an in depth and, at times,
emotional look at the medium of sculpture, presented through the work of young artists living
in Florence.
Martino Margheri commented: "The project is significant as it provides the opportunity for
a large number of young artists to develop professional skills relevant to the contemporary
art sector and to develop a platform for creativity and reciprocal inspiration. Furthermore, it
allows a collaboration between students and industry professionals, which will help to foster
the next generation actors in the artistic and cultural fields."
