Campania descends on Avalon 2009 From the 10th to the15th of March 2009, the Australian International Air show and Aerospace & Defence Exhibition, held at the Avalon airport (Vic) was graced with the presence of an inbound delegation from the Italian region of Campania. This year, the biennial trade fair, one of Asia Pacific’s most prestigious aviation, aerospace and defence events, once again proved to be a tremendous success. Il Commercio / June 2009 Edition 2 Issue 22 June 2009 Cover Story Written by Mareta Marrapodi D espite the challenging weather conditions and turbulent economic climate, the total attendance over the six day event was approximately 165,000. In addition, the show saw the participation of 61 official international delegations from 25 different countries, 600 participating exhibiting companies and a total of 400 aircraft involved in the show. Today, the Campania region and in particular Naples, is home to a large number of companies focused on aerospace, particularly in the field of aeronautics and research and development. With a specialised workforce consisting of over 10.000 personnel working in over 100 specialised enterprises, its strength in the industry is more than evident. The inbound Italian mission whose objective was to promote the Region’s aerospace industry and seek new business opportunities, was made possible due to the PLAIT (Public Local Agency for International Trade) project and the Provincia di Napoli whose policy for supporting and promoting internationalisation of its strong aerospace industry was crucial to its success. The province’s collaboration with Consorzio Technapoli (an Industry consortium located in the province of Naples), together with the Italian Chambers of Commerce of Adelaide and Melbourne, was also instrumental to the success of the mission. The delegation which was both of an institutional and commercial nature was comprised of a team of private/commercial exhibitors, consortiums and regional and government representatives. Lead by Provincial Councillor, Prof. Filippo Monaco together with the President of Consorzio Technapoli, Luigi Iavarone and an official of Provincia di Napoli, Dr. Claudio Pomella, the group was a fine example of the region’s technical and productive expertise in the aerospace field. The Campania region is on of five major players in Italy’s aerospace industry, other regions being that of Lombardy, Piedmont, Lazio and Puglia. As one of the first regions in the development of this sector, it has a long standing tradition in advanced technology development dating back to the 1920’s of the last decade. Nowadays, the Campania region also places much emphasis on research and development of its key aerospace industry. Universities and Research Centres such as CIRA (Italian Centre for Aerospace Researchers) are internationally renowned and play an important role in the continued development and growth of the industry. In addition, the region also has a number of enterprises specialised in engineering for product and production development, software development and testing systems.
