espite the challenging weather
conditions and turbulent economic
climate, the total attendance over the
six day event was approximately 165,000.
In addition, the show saw the participation of 61
official international delegations from 25 different
countries, 600 participating exhibiting companies
and a total of 400 aircraft involved in the show.
Today, the Campania region and in particular
Naples, is home to a large number of companies
focused on aerospace, particularly in the field
of aeronautics and research and development.
With a specialised workforce consisting of over
10.000 personnel working in over 100 specialised
enterprises, its strength in the industry is more
than evident.
The inbound Italian mission whose objective
was to promote the Region’s aerospace industry
and seek new business opportunities, was
made possible due to the PLAIT (Public Local
Agency for International Trade) project and the
Provincia di Napoli whose policy for supporting
and promoting internationalisation of its strong
aerospace industry was crucial to its success. The
province’s collaboration with Consorzio Technapoli
(an Industry consortium located in the province
of Naples), together with the Italian Chambers of
Commerce of Adelaide and Melbourne, was also
instrumental to the success of the mission.
The delegation which was both of an institutional
and commercial nature was comprised of a team
of private/commercial exhibitors, consortiums
and regional and government representatives.
Lead by Provincial Councillor, Prof. Filippo
Monaco together with the President of Consorzio
Technapoli, Luigi Iavarone and an official of
Provincia di Napoli, Dr. Claudio Pomella, the
group was a fine example of the region’s technical
and productive expertise in the aerospace field.
The Campania region is on of five major players
in Italy’s aerospace industry, other regions being
that of Lombardy, Piedmont, Lazio and Puglia. As
one of the first regions in the development of this
sector, it has a long standing tradition in advanced
technology development dating back to the 1920’s
of the last decade.

T
hese companies are all specialised in
the aeronautic/aerospace sectors with a
particular emphasis on high performance
thermo-acoustics, design, manufacturing
and aircraft maintenance activities, innovation,
technology transfer, aero structures, turning, milling,
sheet platforming, bending, electro-machining,
welding , precision mechanical components, tools
and numerical control programmes and design and
production of interiors.
Nowadays, the Campania region also places much
emphasis on research and development of its key
aerospace industry. Universities and Research
Centres such as CIRA (Italian Centre for Aerospace
Researchers) are internationally renowned and play
an important role in the continued development and
growth of the industry. In addition, the region also
has a number of enterprises specialised in engineering
for product and production development, software
development and testing systems.
During the fair, the six day programme featured
a number of business to business meetings with high
profile Australian companies, Government Departments
and institutions such as, the Queensland Government
of Tourism, Regional Development and industry, the
Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional
Development of Victoria, the Australian Industry
and Defence network and the Italian Chamber’s of
Commerce of both Adelaide and Melbourne.
During the initial trade only days, in addition to the
already scheduled appointments, the delegation
also undertook many impromptu meetings from
Australian and International companies who were able
to appreciate the “Made in Italy” brand. Over 100
companies expressed interest in the Italian aerospace
technology on show, several keen to strengthen
commercial ties with institutions and enterprises from
the region.
The presence of the Italian stand was exceptionally
well received by local and international media, who,
eager to learn more about the mission, attended
a press conference given by the delegation at the
NAPLES stand.
The Italian stand proved to be highly popular, not
only amongst the many business individuals and
companies seeking new business opportunities but
also with the general public who were attracted to the
stand because of its Italian feel, sociable staff and most
importantly, the exceptional quality of its products.
The mission not only proved to be highly fruitful on all
accounts but it also exceeded expectations as delegates
now continue to follow up on contacts made during
the show in their quest for entry into the Australian
market.
