commodity. On the plus side, I think we have extraordinary resourcefulness
and may be able to overcome some the crises that are coming, but we tend
to react only when facing the eye of the storm. Look at Hurricane Katrina.
Under a competent, compassionate and watchful Government, that
catastrophe could have had a very different outcome. When the Northridge
earthquake of 1994 tried to crack the spine of LA, President Clinton had the
main arteries, namely the 10 freeway, back in action within three months. LA
felt federally supported. New Orleans doesn’t feel the support of that mighty
hand. I think that humanity remains pretty much the same throughout
history, shaped mostly by circumstance and prosperity. If we get poor, we
get nasty and if we stay economically stable, we behave with more gratitude
and generosity of spirit. An example. There seemed to be no end to the
troubles in Northern Ireland when I was growing up and yet now the IRA
have declared a ceasefire. Take a closer look at the situation and you see that
Ireland is an economic miracle, spurred on by membership of the EU.

like a quilt. I knew I’d have to delve into the science that’s likely to be
developed in the near future to make the whole process believable. I was also
lucky enough to go to a conference in Jamaica about the brain with my
science writer friend Rita Carter whose excellent book, Mapping the Mind, has
been on the bestseller lists for years. She really opened up the landscape of
the brain for me and I became fascinated by how much we are information
we are uncovering about the brain and yet how much mystery remains. I’d
like to say that the idea came together during a raging tropical storm and a
clap of thunder in Port Antonio one February night, but that would be too
gothic for words.

brother only to find herself getting closer to a nefarious and mysterious group
of scientists who have been experimenting with immortality. This is also a tale
about modern Romania, which has just become a member of the EU. It’s a
beautiful, dramatic country with an agrarian culture that feels more a part of
the 19th Century than the 21st. When I traveled there, I was shocked to see
a brown bear and her three cubs cross the road just outside the town where I
have set most of the story. It’s also a society which is full of suspicion,
superstition and intrigue, perfect territory for a thriller and probably what
inspired Bram Stoker in the first place.
