Custos of the Holy Land greets the people
When the people are gathered, Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa ofm, Custos of the Holy Land,
with the Representatives of the Christian Churches of Jerusalem approaches the altar while
the Entrance Chant is sung. When they have arrived at the altar, after making a profound bow,
the Custos venerates the altar with a kiss. Then, they all go to the chairs. When the Entrance
Chant is concluded, the Custos and the faithful, standing, sign themselves with the Sign of the
Cross, while the Custos, facing the people, says:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
The people reply:
Amen.
Then the Custos, extending his hands, greets the people, saying:
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, we gather here today in this basilica
at Gethsemane, to offer to God our prayers for the unity of all Christians. We
too often forget how the lack of unity weakens the spiritual strength of the one
Church of Christ, the Church of Christ who is the salt of the earth and the light
of the world, and thus, how this weakens the spiritual action of the Church on
our time. Therefore, today, we pray for Reconciliation, Unity and Peace, with

our Lord, and with each other, in our time. Indeed, in the trials of our time,
in the Middle East and elsewhere, Christians are united in an ecumenism of
suffering, as H.H. Pope Francis and H.H. Patriarch Bartholomeus reminded
us during their common prayer at the Holy Sepulchre on 25 May 2014. Those
who persecute Christians do not ask about their confession, they see us as
One. In order to live this unity in suffering with all those that participate to
this prayer in the world, especially those that stay in countries where they
are persecuted for their faith in Christ, we have responded to the invitation
of our Pastors, successors of the Apostles, to join together here, in the name
of Christ, in the Garden of Olives, precisely where Jesus, only-begotten Son
of God, who continues to suffer with his Church, endured his earthly agony
and accepted the will of the Father for our salvation. Here he asks us to pray
in order not to fall into temptation. Here, he invites us to participate to his
agony for the salvation of the world.
We make our prayer here, today, and ask, according to the teachings of
the Fathers, that all the temptations resulting from our divisions may be
overcome. We unite all our voices, Pastors and people of God, in a call for
peace in the Middle East and throughout the world. May the agony of Christ
here at Gethsemane open us by means of our unity to receive the gift of his
love, bring us into communion with all Christians, and especially those who
today suffer because of his Name the violence of discrimination, persecution
and martyrdom.
[I] Fratelli carissimi, riuniti oggi in questa basilica del Getsemani, eleviamo a Dio preghiere e
suppliche per l’Unità dei cristiani. Troppo spesso dimentichiamo come la mancanza di unità
indebolisca la forza spirituale dell’unica Chiesa di Cristo, la Chiesa di Cristo che è il sale della
terra e la luce del mondo, e quindi quanto questo indebolisca anche l’azione spirituale della
Chiesa sul nostro tempo. Perciò oggi preghiamo per la Riconciliaizione, l’Unità e la Pace, con il
nostro Signore, e gli uni con gli altri, nel nostro tempo. Veramente, nelle prove del nostro tempo,
nel Medio Oriente e altrove, i Cristiani sono uniti in un ecumenismo della sofferenza, come S.S.
Papa Francesco e S.S. il Patriarca Bartolomeo ci hanno ricordato durante la comune preghiera
al Santo Sepolcro il 25 maggio 2014. Quelli che perseguitano i Cristiani non chiedono quale
sia la loro confessione, ci vedono Uno. Per vivere questa unità nella sofferenza con tutti quelli
che partecipano a questa preghiera nel mondo, particolarmente quelli che vivono in Paesi dove
sono perseguitati per la loro fede in Cristo, abbiamo accolto l’invito dei nostri Pastori, successori
degli Apostoli, unendoci nel nome di Cristo precisamente qui, nel Giardino degli Ulivi, dove
Gesù, Figlio unigenito di Dio, che continua a soffrire con la sua Chiesa, visse la sua agonia
terrena e accetta la volontà del Padre per la nostra salvezza. Qui lui ci chiede di pregare per
non cadere in tentazione. Qui, ci invita a partecipare alla sua agonia per la salvezza del mondo.
Seguendo gli insegnamenti dei Padri, la nostra preghiera qui, oggi, si fa supplica perché siano
superate tutte le tentazioni che nascono dalle nostre divisioni. Uniamo le nostre voci, Pastori e
popolo di Dio, per chiedere la pace in Medio Oriente e in tutto il mondo. L’agonia di Cristo qui
al Getsemani ci ottenga di accogliere nell’unità il dono del suo amore, mettendoci in comunione
con tutti i Cristiani, specialmente con quelli che oggi soffrono a causa del suo Nome l’ignominia
delle discriminazione, della persecuzione e del martirio.

Ικετεύουμε τον Κύριο, ικετεύουμε το Άγιο Πνεύμα, ώστε να πάρει
μακριά από μάς κάθε σύννεφο του σκότους, που, λόγω των αμαρτιών
μας, επισκοτίζει την όραση της καρδιάς μας, και δώσε μας τη θαυμαστή
πνευματική κατανόηση του Νόμου Του. Αμήν.
[I] Preghiamo il Signore, preghiamo lo Spirito Santo, affinché si degni di allontanare ogni

[E] A reading from the first letter of Saint John. Beloved, let us love one another, because
love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without
love does not know God, for God is love. In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God
sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. In this is love: not that
we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. Beloved,
if God so loved us, we also must love one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love
one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us.
This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us of his Spirit.
Moreover, we have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son as savior of the world. Whoever

[I] Per noi Cristo si è fatto obbediente fino alla morte, e alla morte di croce. Per questo Dio
l’ha esaltato e gli ha dato il nome che è sopra ogni altro nome.
[E] Christ humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of
this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name.

Jesus went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples
followed him. When he arrived at the place he said to them, “Pray that you
may not fall into temptation.” After withdrawing about a stone’s throw from
them and kneeling, he prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, take this
cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done.” And to strengthen
him an angel from heaven appeared to him. He was in such agony and he
prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling here on
the ground. When he rose from prayer and returned to his disciples, he found
them sleeping from grief. He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up
and pray that you may not fall into temptation.”

[I] ✠ Passione di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo secondo Luca. Gesu se ne andò, come al solito,
al monte degli Ulivi; anche i discepoli lo seguirono. Giunto sul luogo, disse loro: “Pregate, per
non entrare in tentazione”. Poi si allontanò da loro quasi un tiro di sasso e, inginocchiatosi,
pregava: “Padre, se vuoi, allontana da me questo calice! Tuttavia non sia fatta la mia, ma la tua
volontà”. Gli apparve allora un angelo dal cielo a confortarlo. In preda all’angoscia, pregava
più intensamente; e il suo sudore diventò come gocce di sangue che qui cadevano a terra. Poi,
rialzatosi dalla preghiera, andò dai discepoli e li trovò che dormivano per la tristezza. E disse
loro: “Perché dormite? Alzatevi e pregate, per non entrare in tentazione”.

Levez-vous et priez, pour ne pas entrer en tentation.”

nicht in Versuchung geratet.

Monition
Twelve baskets of olive branches from the Holy Garden of Gethsemane
will now be brought to be blessed and distributed among the faithful. The olive
tree is the tree that signals the return of life after the Flood, and symbolizes
the covenant God establishes with humankind. The strength and long life of
the olive tree reminds us of the Christian hope that is never deluded; the oil
from the fruit of the olive tree becomes light that leads us to the light of Christ.
The unity of the Churches is both example and hope for a world that has need
of the light of Christ. With oil of the olive prophets, priests and kings have
been anointed, as each one of us, the holy people of God, has been anointed in
our Baptism. May we all hear the call to be united in the one body of Christ!
Each olive branch finds its own unity in the tree, an image that helps us
understand the fraternity that unites us and calls us to show our solidarity with
all Christians who suffer persecution because of the faith. The olive branches
invite us to look towards Easter and the joy we share as Christian people who
welcome the Messiah, looking towards his victory over death and gift of new
life through his resurrection, and towards the peace that has no end.

saranno benedetti e distribuiti ai fedeli. L’ulivo è l’albero che segna la ripresa della vita dopo

dell’ulivo ci richiama la speranza cristiana che mai delude; l’olio estratto dai suoi frutti diventa
luce che orienta e conduce alla luce di Cristo. L’unità delle Chiese è esempio e speranza per un
mondo che ha bisogno della luce di Cristo. Con l’olio d’ulivo sono stati unti profeti, sacerdoti
e re, e ognuno di noi, popolo santo di Dio, nel nostro battesimo. Sentiamoci chiamati all’unità
dell’unico corpo di Cristo! Ogni ramoscello trova la propria unità nell’albero, ci fa comprendere
la fraternità che ci unisce, e ci chiede di essere solidali con i Cristiani che soffrono persecuzioni
a causa delle fede. I ramoscelli d’ulivo ci invitano a guardare alla Pasqua, alla nostra gioia di
popolo cristiano che accoglie il Messia, alla sua vittoria sulla morte, alla vita nuova che la sua
risurrezione ci dona, e alla pace che non ha fine.
