Prologue: Exhortation of St. Francis to the Brothers and Sisters of Penance (circa 1210-1215)
Concerning Those Who Do Not Do Penance
But all those men and women who are not doing penance and do not receive the Body and Blood of
our Lord Jesus Christ and live in vices and sin and yield to evil concupiscence and to the wicked
desires of the flesh, and do not observe what they have promised to the Lord, and are slaves to the
world, in their bodies, by carnal desires and the anxieties and cares of this life.
These are blind, because they do not see the true light, our Lord Jesus Christ; they do not have
spiritual wisdom because they do not have the Son of God who is the true wisdom of the Father.
Concerning them, it is said, "Their skill was swallowed up" and "cursed are those who turn away
from your commands". They see and acknowledge, they know and do bad things and knowingly
destroy their own souls.
See, you who are blind, deceived by your enemies, the world, the flesh and the devil, for it is
pleasant to the body to commit sin and it is bitter to make it serve God because all vices and sins
come out and "proceed from the heart of man" as the Lord says in the Gospel. And you have
nothing in this world and in the next, and you thought you would possess the vanities of this world
for a long time.
But you have been deceived, for the day and the hour will come to which you give no thought and
which you do not know and of which you are ignorant. The body grows infirm, death approaches,
and so it dies a bitter death, and no matter where or when or how man dies, in the guilt of sin,
without penance or satisfaction, though he can make satisfaction but does not do it.
The devil snatches the soul from his body with such anguish and tribulation that no one can know it
except he who endures it, and all the talents and power and knowledge and wisdom which they
thought they had will be taken away from them, and they leave their goods to relatives and friends
who take and divide them and say afterwards, "Cursed be his soul because he could have given us
more, he could have acquired more than he did." The worms eat up the body and so they have lost
body and soul during this short earthly life and will go into the inferno where they will suffer torture
without end.
All those into whose hands this letter shall have come we ask in the charity that is God to accept
kindly and with divine love the fragrant words of our Lord Jesus Christ quoted above. And let those
who do not know how to read have them read to them.
And may they keep them in their mind and carry them out, in a holy manner to the end, because they
are spirit and life.
And those who will not do this will have to render an account on the day of judgment before the
tribunal of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Article 1: The Franciscan family, as one among many spiritual families raised up by the Holy Spirit
in the Church, unites all members of the people of God--laity, religious, and priests-- who recognize
that they are called to follow Christ in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi. In various ways and
forms but in life-giving union with each other, they intend to make present the charism of their
common Seraphic Father in the life and mission of the Church.

Pero todos aquellos y aquellas que no viven en penitencia, y no reciben el cuerpo y la sangre de nuestro Señor
Jesucristo, y se dedican a vicios y pecados, y que andan tras la mala concupiscencia y los malos deseos de su
carne, y no guardan lo que prometieron al Señor, y sirven corporalmente al mundo con los deseos carnales y
las preocupaciones del siglo y los cuidados de esta vida: Apresados por el diablo, cuyos hijos son y cuyas
obras hacen, están ciegos, porque no ven la verdadera luz, nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
No tienen la sabiduría espiritual, porque no tienen al Hijo de Dios, que es la verdadera sabiduría del Padre; de
ellos se dice: Su sabiduría ha sido devorada (Sal 106,27), y: Malditos los que se apartan de tus mandatos
(Sal 118,21). Ven y conocen, saben y hacen el mal, y ellos mismos, a sabiendas, pierden sus almas.
Ved, ciegos, engañados por vuestros enemigos, por la carne, el mundo y el diablo, que al cuerpo le es dulce
hacer el pecado y le es amargo hacerlo servir a Dios; porque todos los vicios y pecados salen y proceden del
corazón de los hombres, como dice el Señor en el Evangelio. Y nada tenéis en este siglo ni en el futuro. Y
pensáis poseer por largo tiempo las vanidades de este siglo, pero estáis engañados, porque vendrá el día y la
hora en los que no pensáis, no sabéis e ignoráis; enferma el cuerpo, se aproxima la muerte y así se muere de
muerte amarga. Y dondequiera, cuando quiera, como quiera que muere el hombre en pecado mortal sin
penitencia ni satisfacción, si puede satisfacer y no satisface, el diablo arrebata su alma de su cuerpo con tanta
angustia y tribulación, que nadie puede saberlo sino el que las sufre. Y todos los talentos y poder y ciencia y
sabiduría que pensaban tener, se les quitará. Y lo dejan a parientes y amigos; y ellos toman y dividen su
hacienda, y luego dicen: Maldita sea su alma, porque pudo darnos más y adquirir más de lo que adquirió. Los
gusanos comen el cuerpo, y así aquéllos perdieron el cuerpo y el alma en este breve siglo, e irán al infierno,
donde serán atormentados sin fin.
A todos aquellos a quienes lleguen estas letras, les rogamos, en la caridad que es Dios, que reciban
benignamente, con amor divino, las susodichas odoríferas palabras de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Y los que no
saben leer, hagan que se las lean muchas veces; y reténganlas consigo junto con obras santas hasta el fin,
porque son espíritu y vida. Y los que no hagan esto, tendrán que dar cuenta en el día del juicio, ante el
tribunal de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
Capítulo I: La Orden Franciscana Seglar (OFS) (1)
1. Entre las familias espirituales, suscitadas por el Espíritu Santo en la Iglesia (2), la Familia Franciscana
comprende a todos aquellos miembros del Pueblo de Dios, laicos, religiosos y sacerdotes, que se sienten
llamados al seguimiento de Cristo, tras las huellas de San Francisco de Asís (3).
Di quelli che non fanno penitenza
Tutti quelli e quelle, che non fanno penitenza, e non ricevono il corpo ed il sangue del nostro
Signore Gesù Cristo, e vivono nei vizi e peccati e camminano dietro alta prava concupiscenza ed
alle cattive brame della loro carne, e non osservano quanto promisero al Signore, e servono col
corpo al mondo, ai desideri carnali ed alle sollecitudini del secolo ed agli affari di questa vita:
schiavi del diavolo, di cui sono figli e di cui fanno le opere (cf. Gv 8,41), sono ciechi, perché non
riconoscono la vera luce, il Signore nostro Gesù Cristo. Non possiedono la sapienza spirituale,
perché non possiedono il Figlio di Dio che è la vera sapienza del Padre, dei quali è scritto: La loro
sapienza è stata divorata (Sal 106,27); e: Maledetti coloro che si allontanano dai tuoi comandamenti
(Sal 118,21).
Vedono e lo riconoscono, sanno di fare il male e lo fanno e così consapevolmente mandano in
rovina la loro anima. Aprite gli occhi, o ciechi, ingannati dai vostri nemici: dalla carne, dal mondo e
dal diavolo; poiché è cosa dolce per il corpo commettere il peccato e gli è cosa amara farlo servire a
Dio; poiché tutti i vizi ed i peccati escono dal cuore degli uomini e da lì procedono, come dice il
Signore net Vangeto (cf. Mc 7, 21).
E così non avete niente di buono in questo mondo e non ne avrete per il futuro. E pensate di
possedere a lungo le cose vane di quaggiù, ma vi fate imbrogliare, poiché verrà un giorno ed un'ora,
che non pensate, che non conoscete e che ignorate; s'ammala il corpo, s'avvicina la morte e così
l'uomo muore di una morte amara. E dovunque, in qualsiasi tempo e modo l'uomo muoia in peccato
mortale senza penitenza e soddisfazione, se può soddisfare e non soddisfa, allora il diavolo rapisce
la sua anima dal suo corpo con tanta angustia e tribolazione, che nessuno può immaginare, tranne
colui che ciò subisce. E saranno loro tolti (cf. Lc 8,18; Mc 4,25) tutti i talenti ed il potere e la scienza
e la sapienza (2Par 1,12), che credevano di possedere. E lasciano tutto ai parenti ed agli amici e
dopo che essi si sono tolti e divisi i suoi beni soggiungono: Maledetta sia l'anima sua, poiché
avrebbe potuto darci di più e guadagnare di più di quanto non abbia guadagnato. I vermi (intanto)
divorano il corpo, e così hanno mandato alla malora il corpo e l'anima nel breve periodo di tempo di
questo mondo, e se ne andranno all'inferno, ove saranno tormentati all'infinito. Per la carità che è
Dio (cf. 1 Gv 4,16), preghiamo tutti coloro, ai quali giungerà questa lettera, di ricevere
benignamente per amore di Dio queste olezzanti parole del nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, come sopra
riferite. E quanti non sanno leggere, se le facciano leggere spesso; e le conservino presso di sé
mettendole santamente in pratica sino alla fine, perché sono spirito e vita (Gv 6,64). E coloro che
non faranno ciò, saranno tenuti a rendere conto nel giorno del giudizio (cf. Mt 12,36) davanti al
tribunale del nostro Signore Gesù Cristo (cf. Rm 14,10).
Capitolo I: L'ORDINE FRANCESCANO SECOLARE (OFS)
1-Tra le famiglie spirituali, suscitate dallo Spirito Santo nella Chiesa*), quella Francescana riunisce
tutti quei membri del Popolo di Dio, laici, religiosi e sacerdoti, che si riconoscono chiamati alla
sequela di Cristo, sulle orme di S. Francesco d'Assisi.

In modi e forme diverse, ma in comunione vitale reciproca, essi intendono rendere presente il
carisma del comune Serafico Padre nella vita e nella missione della Chiesa*).
