The Course This one week training course aims at helping Mediterranean researchers and conservators to have access to knowledge and expertise in the field of photography restoration and conservation, and to provide and promote opportunity to participate to scientific exchanges at international level. The course covers a wide range of interdisciplinary topics such as basic chemical and physical phenomena involved in photographic phenomena, degradation of negative and positive picture, conservation materials and methods, virtual restoration, and practical experience of restoration. Course Objectives • • To provide theoretical and practical knowledge of photograph conservation problems, in order to select the most appropriate reliable long-term efficient methods of conservation; To obtain an integration of expertise, products, technology and policy involved in the preservation/conservation of Mediterranean cultural heritage of the photographic archives; Cairo University Faculty of Archaeology Conservation Department Egypt • • Catania University Department of Science Chemistry Italy To exchange advanced knowledge between Italian and Egyptian conservators; To disseminate information to the end-users (e.g., Museums, Archives & Libraries) and to act as an interface between scientists, technologists and end-users. Participants and Eligibility Requirements The course is open to 20 participants with a scientific conservation background (i.e. graduate students in scientific and/or humanistic degrees who wish to achieve experience in the conservation of photographic heritage, university researchers in the field of restoration and conservation conservators-restorers, curators, keepers, and other professionals actively involved in the preservation of and access to cultural heritage). Trainees must have English language skills sufficient to function on a day-to-day basis in their training environment. Lecturers Scientists in chemistry, biology, physics, conservation, and photography from leading universities in Italy and Egypt.
