SPAZIO NUTRIZIONE IN MILAN: AGREEMENT WITH
AKESIOS PAVES WAY TO FOOD SCIENCE SECTION AT TUTTOFOOD
Milan, 24 November 2015 – TUTTOFOOD has moved one step closer to realizing its ambition of
becoming a hub of information for the entire agri-foods industry thanks to agreement entered
into by Fiera Milano (the Milan Trade Fair company) and Akesios, a company specializing in the
organization of medical and scientific conferences and congresses for the launch of a project
known as “ Spazio Nutrizione [the “Nutrition Zone”].
Spazio Nutrizione consists of a programme of conferences and courses organized in concert
with prestigious medical-scientific companies to offer opportunities for the acquisition and
sharing of knowledge that will involve not only the agri-food companies and associations
already present at TUTTOFOOD, but also a series of new participants, including doctors,
nutritionists, dieticians, health and well-being professionals, personal trainers and pharmacists.
The programme, which will be characterised by a high level of scientific rigour, provides the
new participants with a chance to become familiar with the abundant array of agri-food
products on display at the Fair, along with the specific products from the sponsors of the
Nutrition Zone (functional food, dietary supplements and food ingredients).

Fair, an event that not only interprets the current state of affairs in the international food
industry, but is also capable of anticipating future trends”.
In the words of Petrusca Andretta, CEO of the Akesios Group, the decision to hold the Spazio
Nutrizione in Milan was based on the recognition that the “synergy between the Fair, the city
and healthy food has created a global centre of attraction – to all intents and purposes a
brand whose worldwide renown and prestige have been magnified even more by EXPO. The
ECM courses on food and nutrition that will take place as part of the Spazio Nutrizione
programme will enable us to incorporate a scientific perspective into the existing framework of
nutrition and healthy eating, and thus create a unique combination of businesses, networking
opportunities and knowledge that has few rivals elsewhere in the world.”
The macro-area for learning and knowledge-sharing is divided into four thematic areas, each
focusing on specific needs: Spazio Nutrizione Adult, which is dedicated to the preventative
potential of sound nutrition for adults; Spazio Nutrizione Kids, which is dedicated to the question
of healthy food for children; Spazio Nutrizione Earth, which looks at how to achieve healthy
and natural nutrition that is sustainable in every respect; and Spazio Nutrizione Sport, which
offers useful tips and information for professional and amateur athletes alike.

In keeping with the evolution of TUTTOFOOD from a trade fair into a rolling system of advice and
assistance that offers high value added for the businesses operating in the industry, Spazio
Nutrizione will be an annual event. Every odd-numbered year it will be held inside the Trade Fair
itself (8-11 May 2017), and every even-numbered year (5-7 May 2016) at Mi.Co., the prestigious
Fiera Milano congress centre located in the heart of the city, next to the futuristic Citylife district.
In the words of Professor Sergio Bernasconi (President of the Scientific Committee of Spazio
Nutrizione) and Professor Gian Vincenzo Zuccotti (Director of the Paediatrics Clinic the at
Università degli Studi di Milano’s Children’s Hospital), both of them coordinators of Spazio
Nutrizione Kids: “We want to provide an opportunity for a cultural coming-together of diverse
specialists from the world of paediatrics where we can discuss a number of essential issues such
as the role of cereals in the daily diet of children and adolescents. In the light of new
technologies such as nutria-genomics and metabolistics, we want to explore the molecular
mechanisms that make a balanced diet in early childhood such an essential part of preventing
degenerative diseases in adulthood. We want to look at scientific evidence and prejudices
concerning particular diets, and consider their potential advantages and disadvantages in old
age.” The primary purpose of the activities is to come up with a number of agreed-upon
recommendations that will help develop a sound nutritional culture for children, adolescents
and their families.
According to Professor Michele Carruba, Director of the Obesity Centre at the Department of
Pharmacology of Università degli Studi di Milano and Coordinator of Spazio Nutrizione Adult:
“The cultural and scientific dynamics linking nutrition and health, which were already broached
at Expo, now need to be explored in more depth. The world faces some absolutely intolerable
situations such as the fact that one billion people are suffering from hunger while more than
one billion are dying from overeating. Obesity and the diseases associated with it are the
consequences of poor diet. The WHO has several times advised that the only way of putting an
end to this situation is through a cultural shift, and research has shown that a Mediterranean
diet is the most effective way of staying healthy.”
According to Professor Luigi Bonizzi, Director of the Department of Veterinary Science and
Public Health and Professor Attilio Sacchi of the Department of Agricultural and Environmental
Sciences both at Università degli Studi di Milano, who are Joint Coordinators of Spazio
Nutrizione Earth: “Food consumption needs to be placed in the context of the sector that
includes its production. The global challenge of population growth require higher crop yields
and increased efficiency in livestock rearing, which means we have to use the tools made
available by genomics as part of a sustainable solution. We need to increase the nutritional
value of food and, more generally, its quality by leveraging the benefits of the scientific
revolution to produce better food for less.
For Antonio Paoli, Director of the Laboratory of Nutrition and Physical Exercise, Associate
Professor of Biomedical Science at Università di Padova and Coordinator of the Spazio
Nutrizione Sport “We shall be dealing with all the major themes of nutrition and dietary
supplements in the world of sport, which are of essential importance for improving and

defending optimal health and helping the full development of the organism through a sound
and well-balanced diet. Today, the combination of physical activity, a healthy diet and
supplements is the surest way of preventing the occurrence of disease and the best system for
meeting the particular energy and nutritional needs of athletes”.
