I reach the narrowest and
steepest part of the Leverett
Glacier and cross the
Transantarctic mountains.
The route stretches uphill
over a seemingly endless
distance. The glacier is huge
and bigger than most of
the ice fields in Alaska and
Canada. Nobody has ever
conquered this glacier before
using their physical strength
alone. Enormous winds
whip through the valley and
head straight towards me
from the Antarctica plateau
at below minus 40 degrees
centigrade. I weep, sob and
stroke my cold face with my
hand. The ascent seems
endless, yet I gradually begin
to gain in confidence because
I know that the first kilometres are amongst the
most difficult.

The first woman to ski solo across Antarctica
Briton Felicity Aston has done it. On a 1 744 km
journey that took her 59 days, she skied across the
white continent. From the coast, to the South
Pole, and on to the coast, battling the icy cold for
nearly two months, the hardest of storms and
some of the toughest topographical conditions.
In achieving her goal Felicity Aston broke two records:
she is the first woman to cross Antarctica on a
solo expedition, and the first person to do it with
her muscle power alone. It was a mental and
physical effort that was only possible thanks to
the latest and highest performance materials:

suo viaggio lungo 1 744 km e 59 giorni ha
attraversato il continente bianco sugli sci. Il Polo
Sud da costa a costa. Per quasi due mesi immersa nel freddo glaciale, con tempeste fortissime
e condizioni topografiche talvolta estremamente
difficili.
Felicity Aston ha battuto due record contemporaneamente: prima donna a riuscire nell’attraversamento in una spedizione individuale e primo
essere umano a compiere l’impresa con la sola

1 Fibrous web + base fabric
Fibrous web is available in three different versions:

During the weaving process, the fibrous web is set in one direction.
This is what makes the «climbing and gliding» possible.
The fibrous web is given a hydrophobic treatment and stays
consistently water repellent.

3Lamination
The waterproof laminate film is a reliable protection barrier
against the entry of water. It means that the climbing skins
also stay dry in wet snow.

4 Backing material
The backing material consists of a blended polyester/cotton
fabric. It is connected firmly via the lamination with the
base fabric. This composite method means that the climbing
skin also stays exceptionally flexible and supple at low
temperatures.

5 Adhesive layer
The specially developed Montana adhesive is applied to the
backing material. The adhesive, which has proven its
worth for decades, is your reliable companion on any kind of
skiing tour. The Montana adhesive is especially suitable for
the new generation of rocker skis. Due to the high adhesive
strength, the climbing skin stays safely attached to the
ski at low temperatures.

EXPEDITION DAY 17
Still ten days to go until I reach
the South Pole. My body is
starting to show the first
symptoms of exhaustion, but
I am yet to have completed
a third of my journey. I am
hurting all over. My feet feel
as heavy as lead and my
shoulders and neck are
strained from the sleighpulling. My elbows are in pain
due to my repeated arm
movements. Every day is the
same. Thirty kilometres
of hiking, setting up the tent,
cooking, eating and collapsing into the warm sleeping
bag. It is like a form of
meditation: the only things
you hear are your own
breathing, your own heartbeat and the crunching
sound of the skis and your
clothing. Now it is all about
perseverance.
EXPEDITION DAY 56
I only have 100 kilometres
left until my final goal – but
the environment remains
extremely forbidding. Not one
person or animal, and not
even a vapour trail from any
aircraft can be seen on
the wide horizon. The worst
thing is the sense of lone­
liness amidst the cold and the
storms. Yet in spite of all,
noth­ing is going to stop me.
I am determined to be the
first woman ever to ski across
Antarctica. An overwhelming
feeling of happiness and a
huge sense of appreciation are
beginning to develop in me.
My body and my equipment
have brought me safely
across the continent. And
the coming storm is not
going to shake my firm sense
of confidence that I will
safely complete the final
kilometres of my expedition.
