Mandi Luigi Gambin President, Famee Furlane Toronto Villa Leonardo Gambin Resident Reaches Century Mark Buon compleanno, Giuseppe Vitale On February 12th, surrounded by family and well wishers, Giuseppe Vitale, a resident of the home since November 2008, celebrated his one hundredth birthday. Mr. Vitale is the youngster of the century mark club at the residence, Cesare Noce being one hundred and three years young. Not many of us can say we are one hundred years young let alone expect to reach such a milestone. Throughout his life journey, which included growing up without a father (due to circumstances that separated them), living through two world wars, poverty, depression and experiencing the death of a young son and a wife after sixty years of marriage Giuseppe Vitale has had three constants: love of family; appreciation of music, especially the organetto; and being an optimist. At a young age, by today’s standard, he married Teresa Ricchio and together had nine children: Francesco; Adolfo; Alberto; Fiore (who died at three years of age); Vittorio; Fiore; Sestino; Tonino; and Vincenzo. Like many Italians who sought a new future in Canada, the Vitale family began its passage to this country in the mid 1950’s. Following his eldest sons and their families, Giuseppe Vitale arrived in Canada in 1959 and sponsored the remaining members of the family soon thereafter. Today Giuseppe Vitale is the family patriarch of five generations which includes twenty-four grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The success of the organization can be attributed to many factors and among them is the dedication and loyalty of staff in providing top quality healthcare services to our residents in a caring, empathetic and respectful manner. Within the Service Recognition Programme, staff will be recognized at five year intervals from the fifth year through to the twentyfifth year of service. The Board of Directors broadened the scope of the programme to also include members of the community that have made multi-year volunteer commitments to the achievements of the charity. On Thursday, December 10, 2009, at the inaugural service recognition ceremony eightyfive individuals were presented with their Villa Leonardo Gambin service pin. Her jewellery was paired with the clothing and I remember how the ladies reacted. They were a hit. Rita’s creations are show stoppers. Open any magazine with a fashion spread, and you’ll see what I mean. Since childhood, Tesolin has had a way with creating unique jewellery. At first, she began working with leather, suede and metals shaping them into unique pieces of jewellery. At the age of seventeen she had to quit working for Simpson's to keep up with demand for her product for the same retailer. Later on, Tesolin focused on completing law school and embarking on her new career as an intellectual property lawyer in downtown Toronto. After taking a break from law she decided to have some fun and began to create jewellery. Her pieces had once again gained the notice of the owner of a Toronto boutique. He placed an order on the spot. Tesolin decided to pursue a different course in life and gave herself one year to establish enough clientele to sustain a company. Fortunately, things went well and Rita Tesolin Inc. 4 took root. Tesolin's trademark, her name with a Monarch butterfly symbolized the change in her path. A transformation, a new beginning. Her pieces have been worn by Jeanne Beker, Tanya Kim, and Wendy Crewson, on the cover of Elle Canada by Coco Rocha, and none other than the red hot Taylor Swift on the cover of Flare magazine. She’s also been part of Canada’s Next Top Model, Project Runway and So You Can Think You Can Dance Canada by Judges and contestants alike. Tesolin is currently working with designers Greta Constantine, David Dixon and Brandon Dwyer for the upcoming Toronto Fashion Week. Tesolin has become a national star in the fashion industry yet does not hesitate to assist community initiatives and charities. She has actively worked with the Oak Leaf Gala in support of the Villa Leonardo Gambin Charity and its long term care residence for the past two years and hopes to do so for many more (including this year’s which will take place in October). In the past this was an afternoon event, held on the first Sunday in December. For the past 2 years we have asked Santa to join us in the morning so that we could have ‘Breakfast with Santa’. In addition to Santa’s toy bag, this year he brought some special elves to help out and in the end the Balarins of the Famee performed a dance for the audience encouraging other kids to join in. The week after Santa, the Famee hosts the Arie di Natale. This year we had both choirs, Il Coro di Santa Cecilia and Le Voci del Friuli along with the Balarins of the Famee performing. Alberto De Rosa was the host this year and he introduced Carlo Vanini on the trumpet and Tony and Edda Picco peforming a play called “Toni e Mariute” written by Rina Del Nil Cralli. Gianni Ceschia, Rosemary Maraldo and Fernando Clabassi performed a poem called “La Notte Santa”. After all the Christmas festivities are over with and the new year is here, we then have La Befana, another traditional custom at the Famee in January. With stockings lining the hallway to the Canada Room, vin burle’ simmering and pinza waiting to be shared, the children gathered by the fire to learn about another custom and its significance, the bonfire (falo’). As most of us recall, the falo’ was lit on the eve 6 of the Epiphany in many towns across Friuli. This old Roman custom signifies the death of old Mother Nature and the birth of a younger Mother Nature. The children read a poem about the Befana and called her to make her grand entrance. As the Befana moved among the children, she distributed sweets, tangerines and walnuts and addressed them with praise and promises for good behaviour. A very special thank you to Luciana Pol Bodetto and Gianna Grigio for supplying the delicious pinza, and to the Women’s Auxiliary for organizing the event. Among our guests, we were honoured to have a visitor from Italy, Sara Del Zuanne, who was very impressed to see that our traditions were being imparted to our young. We may be living worlds apart, but our native Friuli is always in our heart! Although it was a wee bit chilly on the mountain there was plenty of sparkling sun, warm coverings not to mention good "spirits" to keep everyone warm and cosy. Thank you to all who participated. Your generous spirit and sense of fun and adventure help make this annual excursion the great success that it is. I Soci, Le Castagne e un Tai di Vin Who says that members’ meetings are dry and boring? Every November at the members’ meeting, after the serious discussions have taken place, the smell of roasting chestnuts fills Friuli Hall and the members are treated to fresh, roasted ‘castagne con un taiut di vin’. This is a tradition that has continued at the Famee for many decades and marks the turning point between the somber mood of “Il Giorno dei Morti’ on November 1st and Christmas which is just around the corner. At the end of the evening an impromptu choir breaks out with some traditional Furlan songs. After a difficult year of stewardship some Board members enjoy a break. The meeting minutes, some chestnuts and a glass of water. After a few chestnuts and wine some tradition Furlan songs are sung. Famee Furlane Gift Card The Famee Furlane Toronto is excited about the introduction of its new and innovative way to purchase gift certificates which can be used like cash in “al Fogolar Restaurant” and La Saletta. These ‘convenience’ cards have been introduced to replace the gift certificates, previously available at the Famee Furlane for use at al Fogolar and now have the added feature of also being redeemable in the members room “La Saletta’. The attractive prepaid cards allow the freedom to be purchased in amounts of your choosing, whether for personal use or as gifts for family, friends and colleagues. The wallet-sized cards are convenient to carry, are reloadable, and have no expiration date. Indicate your support for the Famee Furlane with the purchase and use of these cards, available at any time during normal business hours. Friuli Terrace tenants help their community close to home and much further away. The help is provided in many ways. They pack food, clothes and laundry soap to give to the Consolata Mission, which distributes the items. Warm pyjamas were sent to families in Abruzzi, many of whom are still in need after the earthquake. Knitted scarves and hats were happily provided to local schools. Funds raised by tenants purchased items for two large diaper bags, filled with necessities for babies and donated to a local church to help unwed mothers. Over Christmas, tenants donated some 75 toys to Toy Mountain. Congratulations to Friuli Centre tenants for recognizing the spirit of Christmas and doing a lot to help others. This year, tables were needed outside the Activities Room for books, tapes and puzzles. 1. These boxes are ready to be shipped to the Philippines. They are full of clothes and food and will help needy families. 2. On January 5, tenants Renato and Bruna Sisti celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. They have been tenants for over ten years. 3. Tenants said goodbye to Baldassare Adamo, who left Friuli Terrace after 20 years to live with his family. Baldassare was a tailor and his skills were put to good use, cutting the lovely fabric that tenants sewed into placemats, runners and bags that were then sold at the Christmas Bazaar. He also volunteered at countless Terrace functions over the years. Tenants gave him a citation at the Christmas Party. Sig. Adamo will be missed.
