… and a “Trasversal programme” incorporating
four key activities to cover the policy issues
outlined above, to make specific provision for
language training and ICT, for a more
substantial dissemination activity
… and a “Jean Monnet” programme to support
action related to European integration,
European institutions and associations in
education and training

Comenius School Development Project
Old Socrates-Comenius
Consists of three main actions:
• 1) School partnerships –small-scale transnational
groupings of schools focusing on a common topic,
on languages or on school development. Grants
cover project work and mobility of staff and pupils.
• 2) Training of school education staff – transnational
projects involving schools and training organisations
to develop joint courses, materials, etc;
accompanied by individual training grants for
mobility.
• 3) Comenius networks –networks grouping together
related Comenius transnational projects to promote
cooperation and innovation in their thematic areas.

The mixing of centralised project grants
and decentralised mobility in former
Comenius 2 did not work. The new
structure tackles this issue by separating
out mobility clearly. It also envisages the
development of new types of mobility –
such as longer-term mobility for
individual pupils in upper-secondary
education.

The following actions may be supported
by Comenius programme:
• Mobility: exchange of pupils and staff –
placement in schools or enterprises abroad for
pupils or for educational staff – partecipation in
training courses for teachers – study and
preparatory visits for mobility, partnership,
project or network activities – assistantships for
teachers and potential teachers
