Presentation and intensive interdisciplinary discussion of progress in radiation physics, radiation chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, oncology and epidemiology are expected. Importance will also be given to reviewing the progress made in modelling the multi-step process of radiation induced cancer and its application to epidemiological data, in particular for the better quantification of low dose and low dose rate risk. The Symposium will offer an occasion to discuss the current status of topical controversial phenomena, such as non-targeted and delayed effects, including radiation-induced bystander effects, genomic instability, adaptive response and low-dose hyper-radiosensitivity. Emphasis will be laid on the recent technical developments in radiation detection and novel irradiation techniques, in particular to the current state of the microbeam technology for single cell irradiation and of its biological applications. To encourage the attendance of young investigators as well as researchers from less-favoured-Countries, specific awards are foreseen. 4 MICROS2005 TOPICS The programme will include Invited, Oral and Poster presentations and Refresher Courses on the following main topics: • Radiation interactions with matter and energy deposition. • Particle track structures in condensed media including water, DNA and • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • protein. Chemical processes from radiation tracks to DNA and chromatin damage. Spectra of clustered molecular damage and dependence on radiation quality. Computational biology and its implications for molecular radiobiology. Repair and cellular effects as a function of radiation quality. Mechanisms of radiation mutagenesis and aberration formation. Stochastic, mechanistic and empirical modelling of dose-effect relationships. Mechanisms and modelling of radiation carcinogenesis. Research approaches for extrapolations to low dose and to different radiation fields. Microbeam technology and biological applications. Non-targeted and delayed effects such as bystander effects and genomic instability. Radiation reference quantities for the evaluation of radiation risk. Physics and radiobiology for space radiation protection. Novel techniques in radiation detection, dosimetry and microdosimetry. Novel techniques for observing radiation induced biological damage. Advances in radiation therapy, including hadron therapy. Internal dosimetry and risk assessment for internal exposure. Later submissions will not be accepted. 6 MICROS2005 General Information VENUE The 14th International Symposium on Microdosimetry will be held on November 13-18, 2005 in Venezia at the “Centro Congressi” (operated by “San Servolo Servizi srl”) on the Isle of San Servolo, an oasis in a unique lovely urban setting. The Isle of San Servolo is located in the Venetian lagoon, just in front of Piazza San Marco (8 minutes by continuously running streamers). San Servolo Isle, is believed inhabited since the year 600. Formerly, hosted (810 approx) the seat of a Benedictine Monastery and subsequently (1100 approx) a Convent of Benedictine nuns. It remained a religious complex, including wide vegetable gardens, until the early eighteenth century when it was transformed into a military Hospital of the “Repubblica di Venezia” (Republic of Venice) and then (since 1810 approx) a public Hospital. The structures on the Island served as a public Hospital until 1978, mainly operated under the auspices of the “Amministrazione Provinciale di Venezia” (Venice provincial administration). Since 1980 has been the seat of the "European Training Centre for Artisans for the conservation of Architectural Assets", with the objective of organising training courses for European artisans who would then be involved in the recovery of Venezia. In 1995 the Centre became the "European Centre for Professions for the Conservation of Architectural Assets" aimed to operate training courses for conserving architecture in stone, wood, iron and malt and intensive courses for learning the special professions using marble, wrought iron, stucco and the art of frescoes. Since 1997 the Island hosts also the “Venice International University (VIU)”, a centre for under- and post-graduate students and research in the field of economics finance, technologies for distributed intelligence systems, and environment. The buildings and surface of the San Servolo Isle have been developed and refurbished over the years, and nowadays cover an area of over fifty-sixthousand square meters. The more recent restoration work of the monumental complex on the Isle of San Servolo started in the late 1990, maintaining the architectural qualities and natural landscape of the setting. The “Locanda Cipriani”, created by Giuseppe Cipriani (world famous founder of Harry's Bar and Hotel Cipriani in Venezia) in 1935, still owned by the Cipriani family, became a literary legend after Ernest Hemingway wrote “Across the River and Through the Trees” during his stay there. He devoted whole pages of his novel to Torcello and kept a special place in his heart for the island. As a result, the “Locanda” became a destination of choice for the exclusive world of stars and celebrities who often visited Venezia in the post-War era. The dinner ticket for accompanying persons and exhibitors costs 70,00 euro, including the transfer to the isle and back. The participation to the social dinner must be indicated in the Registration Form. Please, report on the Registration form any dietary restrictions. COMPANION PROGRAM: The companions’ programme includes some guided visits to interesting places in Venezia and its surroundings: ; Monday, November 14, 2005 Venezia Tour: Piazza san Marco, Basilica, Palazzo Ducale, Prigioni, Ponte dei Sospiri (2.5 hrs; 31,00 euro per person) Piazza San Marco….This square is the undisputed symbol of Venice, the most beautiful living room in the world! The Basilica, built in the 9th century, maintains the characteristic profile of the Byzantine church, with Greek cross plan and central dome edged with others four round form domes that end with bulbiform little domes. It is the principal church in Venice and was the place where the Doges were ordained. 16 MICROS2005 The Palazzo Ducale (Ducal Palace, also known as Doge's Palace) was the residence of the Doge up to the fall of the Venetian Republic in I797 a public palace and seat of the administration of justice. It is the highest and richest symbol of Venetian civilization, of its cultural, military, political and economic history. All historic periods are represented in an extraordinary stratification of structural and decorative elements: from the antique foundations of the original Gothic complex, to the great halls dedicated to political life and decorated by the canvases of Veronese. Note: Tour will be performed with a minimum of 15 participants and must be booked in advance in the Registration Form. The fees are due at the Conference desk. ; Tuesday, November 15, 2005 Murano, Burano, Torcello Isles Tour: (3.5 hrs; 18,00 euro per person) Don't leave Venezia without a visit to the famous islands, known throughout the world for picturesque scenery, handicraft and history. Murano is well known for its glass making; Burano is famous not only for its lace but it is also a pretty fishing village - its streets lined with bright coloured houses. Torcello is a delightful little island, the earliest centre of civilisations in the estuary. A trip not to be missed! Note: Tour will be performed with a minimum of 35 participants and must be booked in advance in the Registration Form. The fees are due at the Conference desk. ; Wednesday, November 16, 2005 Social Tour (for Delegates and Companions) “Canareggio and Jewish Ghetto” Tour (2.5 hrs; 37,00 euro per person) Set in a quiet corner of Venezia, the Jewish Ghetto offers an opportunity to understand the Venetian Republic’s tolerance and exploitation of foreign people. En route, you will see on of the most tranquil areas of town, known for its long, wide canals draped with the linens of the day’s wash. Proceeding through “Campo Dei Mori”, your guide 17 MICROS2005 will share with you some of the sculptural and architectural treasures of the city. You will also encounter the painter Tintoretto’s house, and visit the church where he was baptized and buried after he adorned its walls with some of his most magnificent works of art. Passing by “Sant’Alvise” you will see the masterpieces of Tiepolo. The tour concludes at the “Jewish Ghetto” with a historical explanation of the Jewish Community in Venezia and a visit to some of the five Synagogues located on the islet. Note: Tour will be performed with a minimum of 15 participants and must be booked in advance in the Registration Form and pre-paid. ; Thursday, November 18, 2005 VILLE VENETE - Riviera del Brenta Tour (4.0 hrs; 45,00 euro per person) The spread of the aristocratic villas along the course of the Brenta from Malcontenta to Stra was a phenomenon that was a sign of the power of Venezia for a couple of centuries between 1550 and 1700. The extraordinary flourishing of summer residences that the great families of Venezia built around the 16th and the 19th century were in perfect harmony with nature, in the countryside near Venezia. There are many in this area possibly thanks to the presence of the main architect of these villas, Andrea Palladio (Padova 1508; Vicenza 1580) who designed them with the classical and noble forms destined to fascinate the whole world. We will visit two of them along the river: Villa Wildmann, built in the 17th century by the Scerimann family and then bought by the Wildmann who gave the actual shape to the villa, and Villa Pisani, now national museum, built for the Doge Pisani in the 17th century. Note: Tour will be performed with a minimum of 54 participants and must be booked in advance in the Registration Form. The fees are due at the Conference desk. 18 MICROS2005 Practical Details How to reach Venezia (Venice) By plane VENEZIA AIRPORT Venezia (Venice) is served by its own International Airport named “Marco Polo”, located at Tessera about 13 km from Venezia city (Piazzale Roma). Warning: Some European low cost airlines (i.e.: Ryanair; Airone; CarpatAir, etc.) operate flights to Venezia (Venice)-Treviso airport. The flights land at TREVISO Airport (named “San Giuseppe”). (see below) Therefore be careful to check the final destination of your flight! Several services connect Venezia-“Marco Polo” International Airport to Venezia city: ACTV Public bus n° 5 (orange buses): runs every half hour and leaves from the platforms in front of the exits of the arrival hall. The last stop is "Piazzale Roma". Tickets can be purchased in the arrival hall of the airport or directly on board. The service takes about 25 minutes to "Piazzale Roma"-Venezia. (suggested choice) • ATVO (blu buses): run hourly and leave from the platforms in front of the exits of the arrival hall. Tickets can be purchased in the arrival hall or directly on board. The service runs from 9.00 to 24.00 and takes about 20 minutes to "Piazzale Roma"-Venezia. (suggested choice) • Alilaguna waterbus service offers transfers from the airport to Murano, the Lido, the Arsenale and with a final stop at San Marco. Tickets can be purchased in the arrival hall of the airport or directly on board. Boats leave hourly. (suggested choice) • Private Water taxis: a private water taxi can be taken directly to the final hotel destination or to San Servolo Symposium venue (this is an expensive choice) • Land taxi: a private (land) taxi can be taken from the airport to “Piazzale Roma”(this is an expensive choice) • From “Piazzale Roma” you can walk (15 minutes) to the selected Hotel or catch a "Vaporetto" public boat/streamer, to the stop closest to your final destination (Hotel or San Servolo Isle Symposium venue) For further details on the “Vaporetto” timetable see ACTV Home Page: www.actv.it/inglese/home.htm 19 MICROS2005 TREVISO AIRPORT Some European low cost airlines (i.e.: Ryanair; Airone; CarpatAir, etc.) operate flights to Venezia (Venice)-Treviso airport. The flights land at TREVISO Airport (named “San Giuseppe”) which is only 30 km from Venezia city. It is connected to Venezia – Piazzale Roma by the ATVO Eurobus. Bus schedule coincides with Ryanair arrivals and departures, and the fare is much cheaper than a taxi (you can pay the driver when you board). The bus transfer from Treviso Airport to Venezia will take 1 hour 10 minutes. The final destination in Venezia is “Piazzale Roma”. From “Piazzale Roma” you can walk (15 minutes) to the selected Hotel or catch a "Vaporetto" public boat/streamer, to the stop closest to the final destination (Hotel or San Servolo Isle Symposium venue).
