Nel 1979 affidai il restyling del logo Cinelli a Italo Lupi. Con lui trovai subito una bella sintonia, e gli diedi carta
bianca. Ne venne fuori il logo più imitato del ciclismo contemporaneo. È difficile da immaginare, oggi, quanto
quel mix di design, moda e competizione che il nuovo logo incarnava fosse sconvolgente e innovativo per i
tempi: lo era al punto che anche Cino quasi si offese. Dal 2008 la collaborazione con MASH SF è partita così:
loro mi spedirono una t-shirt con una interpretazione balorda del mio marchio sacro, Columbus. Io gli risposi
con una e-mail del tipo “ehi voi che cosa vi credete di poter fare???”. Ma in fondo ero molto divertito, ed è nata
un'amicizia. Negli anni '80, quando Italo Lupi li scelse, i colori della C alata del marchio Cinelli avevano ben poco
da spartire col ciclismo, si ispiravano piuttosto ad alcune vernici delle ferrovie britanniche. Erano colori
raffinati: inconsueti per il ciclismo. Ma se oggi l'artista americano Barry Mc Gee ha voluto lavorare con Cinelli, è
stato perchè da bambino lui moriva dietro al CMX, cioè il telaio Cinelli per BMX. Ovviamente era in assoluto il
telaio più caro sul mercato, e anche il più leggero. A quei tempi eravamo un po' troppo avanti: così sbagliammo
pensando che gli atleti volessero un telaio il più leggero possibile, anche a costo di una minor durata: avevamo
una forte mentalità agonistica. Invece il mercato richiedeva prodotti di massa a basso prezzo. Così il nostro
CMX non ebbe grande successo, e addirittura ci ritornarono indietro dei pezzi. Quegli stessi che oggi, anche
rotti, sono ricercati su e-bay, e il loro prezzo non è certo sceso! Quando Andy Hampsten vinse il Giro d'Italia nel
1989, con la sua eroica scalata del passo del Gavia in una epocale tempesta di neve, lui pedalava con vari
prodotti Cinelli. E se andiamo a ingrandire quelle immagini scopriamo che sulla curva non c'è un nastro
qualsiasi, ma un'edizione speciale decorata da Alchimia, lo studio di designer milanesi più famoso del
momento... In quel momento drammatico di spartano eroismo, Cinelli aveva aggiunto il suo tocco di elegante
ironia, senza nulla togliere alla performance professionale. Proviamo a fare un discorso serio? con Cinelli la
bellezza va oltre l'apparire. Il design Cinelli è la combinazione di elementi tecnici essenziali alla performance –
che si tratti del leggendario 'no flex downtube', o dello 'skeletal efficiency concept' di Saetta – uniti a valori
culturali ed emozionali. Vogliamo tentare una considerazione storica? quale altra bici possiamo definire come
lo specchio del proprio tempo, al di fuori della MASH?
Una bici Cinelli ti dà una scarica di emozioni, nel senso più pieno di questa espressione.

In 1979 I asked Italo Lupi to redesign the Cinelli. He knew what I wanted and I gave him carte blanche. The
result was the most imitated logo in modern cycling. Hard to imagine now but the mix of design, fashion and
competition embodied in the logo was startling, even Cino was a little bit offended.
The collaboration with MASH SF began after they sent me a t-shirt with on it a deformed version of the logo of
my other brand, Columbus. I sent them an email saying “What the hell do you guys think you are doing???”
And we became friends. The colours in the winged-C of the Cinelli logo had nothing to do with cycling when
Italo Lupi chose them. They were inspired by the enamelling on old British trains. They were ‘chic’ colours.
Barry McGee wanted to work with Cinelli because when he was a kid he lusted after the Cinelli BMX frame,
CMX – it was the most expensive BMX on the market, and also the lightest, at the time we only had the Italian
racing performance mentality – we thought it was best for the athlete to have the lightest frame possible even
if it meant it last less time – we were completely wrong, the market wanted mass - produced cheap stuff and
everybody complained about our CMX and tried to return the frames. Now people buy broken ones on ebay for
as much as they used to cost new. When Andy Hampsten won the Giro d’Italia in 1989 with his heroic ride on
Passo del Gavia in an enormous snowstorm he was riding Cinelli products. If you look closely you will notice
that the bar tape is not standard cork but a special edition with screenprinted pattern designed by Milan’s
most famous design studio at the time Alchimia. In all that Spartan heroism Cinelli inserted a sense of humour
without ever compromising professional performance. All this to say: Cinelli bikes aren’t just designed to look
good. They’re designed to combine the essential technical elements for performance - be it the legendary ‘no
flex downtube’ or Saetta’s lauded ‘skeletal efficiency concept’ - with an unparalleled emotional and cultural
sophistication - what bike will ever be considered more of a reflection of its times, historically speaking, than
the MASH? Riding a Cinelli FEELS EXCITING in the most complete sense of the expression.

monoscocca Columbus Solida. Columbus Carbon Lab ha
posto estrema cura nella sua progettazione per garantire
la massima affidabilità ed efficienza e rendere questo
telaio impareggiabile nella sua categoria.
• La forma dei nodi, i punti dove lo stress si concentra
maggiormente, sono studiati in modo da minimizzare
il livello specifico di sforzo nei punti di transizione
(Low Sigma Transition), aumentando notevolmente la
resistenza a fatica e l’affidabilità.

the highly evolved amateur is now equipped with the

by the Columbus Carbon Lab for unparallel reliability

• The shape of the frame’s joints, key points of structural
stress, have been studied to minimise the level of
the specific stress (Low Sigma Transition) in the
transition points significantly increasing the
reliability and fatigue resistance of the frame.
• Top tube has been aggressively thinned out into a
skeletal structure (Skeletal Efficiency Philosophy) with
carbon material arranged in the paths of maximum
stress. Constant arc from the top tube to the chains

This totally new frame is made using aerospace
carbon fiber material with aero shape sections and
very low penetration coefficient.

internal cable passages, front fork with airfoil shape

thanks to the very special seat post that has the

Dopo un anno di utilizzo sulle strade delle metropoli del
mondo, abbiamo raccolto le impressioni degli utilizzatori
e introdotto alcune innovazioni.
• Per meglio adattarsi alle misure dei vari ciclisti
un leggero angolo slope al tubo orizzontale garantisce
una maggiore regolazione dell’altezza della sella.
• L’utilizzo urbano, anche in condizioni meteorologiche
avverse, ci ha portato a ridisegnare i foderi posteriori
e la forcella per consentire l’assemblaggio di leggeri
parafanghi.
• L’abbiamo dotata di un compatto portapacchi anteriore
senza appesantire la bicicletta, per trasportare
agevolmente uno zainetto e una borsa.
Il telaio in acciaio Columbus, è anche dotato di
ancoraggi per montare un portapacchi posteriore.
• I pedali hanno un doppio utilizzo: clip on da un lato,
perché Gazzetta della Strada non si rifiuta di correre,
pratici appoggi in gomma dall’altro, per un uso sicuro
anche con le scarpe di cuoio.
• Nastro in tecno pelle forata color cuoio in tinta
con la sella e accessori silver, per dare un tocco di
luce ed impreziosire, come nelle specialissime dei
gloriosi anni del Grande Ciclismo.

After one year of use on the roads of the cities of the
world, we have collected the impressions of users and
introduced significant innovations.
• For a better fitting to the sizes of several cyclists,
the top tube has a slight slope angle to give more
regulation to the saddle height.
• The urban use of the bike also in bad weather
conditions pushed us to redesign the seat stays and
front fork for assembling a pair of light fenders.
• A small front carrier can easily accommodate a
small back pack and a bag. The frame, made with
Columbus steel tubes, is also provided with eyelets
for assembling a rear carrier.
• The pedals have a double function: clip on one side
for serious race training and rubber pads on the
other, for a safe use with leather shoes.
• Tecno-leather bar tape of the same colour
of the saddle and silver accessories for a touch
of light as in the bikes of the glorious years
of the ‘Grande Ciclismo’.

Those who think it’s just a new colorway don’t know
what’s under the hood. This new geometry plays to the
preferences of particular riders. The ride is suited to
high cornering loads, fast switchbacks and scissors
like movements dancing in the streets. This new frame
is a black, grey and blue stealth-mode version of the
‘histogram’ graphic designed by MASH SF rider Garrett
Chow. Definitely fast-twitch and hair-trigger. Built with
the same high-end Columbus tube set as the original
MASH ‘Bolt’ frame, but with even steeper head and
seat tube angles plus a raised bottom bracket with the
geo stamped under the shell.
