A TRIBUTE TO THE LARGEST VOLCANIC EXPLOSION

THE VOLCANO
Santorini is what is left after a huge volcanic explosion destroyed what once was a single island.
The explosion covered a large portion of Greece in ash and is believed to have caused a tsunami
that wiped out the the inhabitants of Crete at the time.
THE TERROIR
The area is extremely low in rainfall and grapes are planted in basket shapes on the ground.
This helps for irrigation purposes, to protect from wind and give a little shade.
The soil is very poor, so the vines struggle in a good way. The soil is volcanic ash,
volcanic rock, with calcerous subsoils.
THE MAIN GRAPES
The dominant varietal for white is Assyrtiko. The wine can show a saline quality and traditionally
has a little bit of oak. The fruit on these wines is golden tree fruit and they have prolific acidity.
The dominant varietal for red is Mavrotragano, literally meaning "Black-Berries".
This grape was almost extinct at one point and is very structured with high acid and tannin.
It is lightly floral with ripe fruit on the nose and a slight smokiness at times.

A TRIBUTE TO EUROPES MOST ROCKIN' VOLCANO
THE VOLCANO
Mt Etna is the tallest active volcano on the European continent at 3,329 meters.
The next tallest in Italy is Mt Vesuvius in Campania, which is less than half as tall.
Major 20th century eruptions have occured in 1928, 1949, 1971, 1981, 1983 and 1991-1993.
THE TERROIR
The slope of the volcano is about 45 degrees and is composed of fertile rocky soil and black gravel.
The well drained soil that's poor in nutrients is great for the vines of Etna.
Unike the rest of Sicily, believed to have a Medditaranean climate, Etna is a series of microclimates
depending on where the vineyards are in relation to the peak of the volcano.
THE MAIN GRAPES
The dominant varietal for white wine is Carricante, which has been cultivated in Sicily for over 100 years.
This is a high acid grape capable of age that can show glazed tree fruit, bees wax and extreme minerality.
The dominant varietal for red is Nerello Mascalese. Sicily's answer to Burgundy due to the
primary red fruit and soil notes. It's very structured with consistantly firm tannin and high acidity.
Thought to be named after the Mascali area in Catania.

MARCO DE BARTOLI, MARSALA, SICILY, ITALY
English trader John Woodhouse is credited with being the first person to fortify the still
wines of Marsala. Marsala started off similar to Port/Madeira the sense that is was fortified
with brandy in order to preserve it during rough voyages. As for Sherry, a Solera system
is used to blend selected vintages. When Woodhouse fortified still wine from the Marsala region,
he loved it so much that he returned back to Sicily in 1796 to produce more for England.
Its reputation hit bottom in the early 20th century when it was deemed a cooking wine.
Marco di Bartoli, COS and Planeta Palari lead the charge in making serious wine from the
Marsala region in western Sicily. Marco de Bartoli has been deemed by many to make the
best fortified Marsala. The Marsala selection at Iron Gate pays tribute to Marco de Bartoli’s
expressions of this underappreciated style.
COLORS
Marsala comes in three colors; oro (golden), ambra (amber) and rubino (ruby).
OAK AGING
Fine Marsala is aged one year; superiore for two years; superiore riserva for four years;
vergine for five years and vergine stravecchio is aged for ten years.
GRAPES
Oro/Ambra: Grillo, Ansonica (Inzolia), Catarratto, Damaschino
Rubino: Perricone, Calabrese (Nero d’Avola), and Nerello Mascalese; plus a
maximum 30% white grapes
MARCO DE BARTOLI, MARSALA SUPERIORE ORO “VIGNA LA MICCIA” SICILY, ITALY $16
3,500 Grillo vines per hectare, planted in 1996 in Contrada Samperi, Marsala, and trained with the Guyot
system. The grapes are picked and selected by hand, soft pressed, naturally decanted and fermented at a
controlled temperature stainless steel vats of 50 hl capacity. Over 4 years in new French oak barrels of 225 l
always topped up. 6 months of bottle. This is dry and 100% Grillo.
MARCO DE BARTOLI, MARSALA "VECCHIO SAMPERI VENTENNALE", SICILY, ITALY $30
3500 Grillo vines per hectare, planted between 1970 and 1996 in Contrada Samperi, Marsala, in mostly level
land, with sandy loam soil. The vines are trained with the 'alberello' or Guyot system. The yields are of 20
hectolitres per hectare, harvested in the last ten days of September. The grapes are picked and selected by
hand, soft pressed, naturally decanted, and traditional fermented at room temperature, in oak and chestnut
barrels. This is dry and 100% Grillo.
MARCO DE BARTOLI, PASSITO DI PANTELLERIA, “SOLE D'AGOSTO” SICILY, ITALY $25
2,500 vines per hectare first planted between 1950 and 1970 in Bukkuram district, as low, free-standing
bushes trained with the "alberello pantesco" system on volcanic, terraced slopes. The yields are of 25
hectoliters per hectare, picked from mid August to the first week of September. 50% of the grapes are
dried in the sunlight, for a minimum of four weeks, over suitable mats and delimited by thick walls made
of volcanic stone. The remaining grapes mature on the plant until September. Once the fermentation has
started, the grapes previously dried are added to the base wine and left macerating during about three
months, until a balance between alcohol content and residual sugar is achieved. 12 months in French oak
barrels of 225 l and 6 months in stainless steel vats. This is sweet and 100% Zibbio(Muscat of Alexandria)
