Dear colleagues,
On behalf of the International Society for Stem Cell Research, we are
delighted to invite you to “Stem Cells in Translation,” our Regional Forum
in Florence, Italy, on September 15-18.
ISSCR Regional Forums complement our highly regarded Annual Meeting
by highlighting key areas of stem cell research rather than providing an
overview of the entire field. “Stem Cells in Translation” will focus on
progress being made at the frontier of discovery as researchers seek to
deliver the incredible promise of stem cell engineering to patients in a
clinical setting.
The heart of ISSCR gatherings is the exchange of information between
leading figures in stem cell research. It’s this unique confluence of passion,
information and knowledge that stimulates thought and propels advances in
our dynamic and challenging field. For this Forum, we’re proud to convene
a compelling group of speakers that includes practicing physicians with clinical
cell and gene therapy experience speaking on an array of exciting topics.
The Forum’s relaxed, collegial setting gives you ample time to ask
questions, exchange information and share ideas with some of your most
prominent and knowledgeable peers, either at poster presentations or
during our receptions.
Experience all this in historic Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, a
city whose beauty and culture has inspired artists and scientists for centuries.
We believe you’ll find this Forum stimulating, insightful and thought-provoking.
Please join us, won’t you?
Best Regards,

Dr. John Dick
Dr. Gordon Keller
Dr. John Dick is a Senior Scientist at the Princess Margaret Cancer
Centre and the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine
of the University Health Network and Professor of Molecular
Genetics at the University of Toronto. Dr. Dick is also Director
of the Program in Cancer Stem Cells at the Ontario Institute
of Cancer Research (OICR). His seminal contributions to the
fields of molecular hematology, stem cell biology and oncology
have been recognized by numerous prestigious awards at the
provincial, national and international levels.
Dr. Dick has achieved groundbreaking findings in the areas
of hematopoiesis and cancer. Through his work, he has
pioneered the field of cancer stem cell biology, transformed
our views of the origin and nature of cancer, and laid the
foundation for new approaches to cancer therapy. Two of the
most important achievements were developing a system for
transplanting normal and malignant human hematopoietic cells
into immune-deficient mice; and using this method to identify
and characterize both normal and leukemic human stem cells.
Dr. Gordon Keller is the Director of the McEwen Centre for
Regenerative Medicine at the University Health Network
in Toronto. Dr. Keller is also a founding member and past
president of the Board of Directors of the International
Society of Stem Cell Research and is a member of the Scientific
Advisory Board for the Burnham Institute for Medical Research.
Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Keller has received
numerous awards, including the “100 Alumni of Influence”
Alumni award from the University of Saskatchewan and a Tier
I Canada Research Chair in Embryonic Stem Biology.
Dr. Keller is best known for his breakthrough success to
differentiate human embryonic stem (ES) cells into cardiac
lineages. His current research aims to elucidate a better
understanding of the mechanisms that control mesoderm and
endoderm induction and specification in mouse and human
embryonic stem (ES) cell cultures. His studies focus specifically
on the generation of the following derivative lineages:
hematopoietic, vascular, cardiac, hepatic and pancreatic.

For most people, flying to Florence actually means flying into Pisa’s Galileo
Galileo airport, which is 80 minutes away by train. Pisa is a central Italian
hub and flights arrive from many European centers. A handful of European
and domestic flights serve Florence’s smaller Amerigo Vespucci airport. You
could also fly into Bologna and then take a train south.

Florence is a key node on the Italian railway network. It has good connections
with the main cities in the north, while to the south Rome is only about an
hour and a half away.
The A1 motorway, the main road artery linking the north and south of the
country, runs past Florence and has four exits.
