FREEDOM TO RESHAPE
Launched in 2013, SaphirKeramik is pioneering Swiss
company LAUFEN’s latest innovation. This revolutionary,
ceramic material reaches its exeptional hardness blended
with corundum, a colourless mineral, which is a component
of sapphires. This gives SaphirKeramik a flexural strength
equal to that of steel. Yet it has the potential to be wafer­
thin, giving designers almost infinite freedom to experi­
ment – and tear up the rulebook of bathroom design.
With over two years’ experience of producing SaphirKeramik
pieces on an industrial scale, LAUFEN is now stretching
the patent­pending material’s limits by exploiting its super­
fine forms not only to create exquisitely detailed textures
and patterns but also by engineering the innovative material
to increase its maximum size – a 120 cm­long washbasin
in SaphirKeramik is the largest to date. LAUFEN has also
applied its impressively efficient, high­pressure casting tech­
nology to other, high­volume pieces in SaphirKeramik.
In collaboration with cutting­edge designers Konstantin Grcic
and Toan Nguyen, LAUFEN unveiled design prototyping at
such prestigious design events as the Milan Furniture Fair,
Art Basel / Design Miami and London Design Festival 2014.
Visitors appreciated the wondrous qualities of ceramic – its
tactile appeal, luminosity and enduringly spotless surface –
and SaphirKeramik’s bewitchingly thin and robust walls.
UNE TOUTE NOUVELLE CONCEPTION SANS LIMITE
La SaphirKeramik, disponible sur le marché depuis 2013, est
la toute dernière innovation de l’entreprise suisse LAUFEN et
d’une importance considérable à l’échelle mondiale. L’extrême
dureté de ce matériau révolutionnaire s’obtient par l’ajout de
corindon, un minéral incolore, composant entre autres du
saphir. Cela permet d’obtenir une résistance à la flexion équi­
valente à celle de l’acier. Ce matériau céramique très fin et
d’une dureté exceptionnelle permet aux designers d’expéri­
menter quasiment sans limites et de ne pas tenir compte des
règles classiques en matière de design de salle de bains.
Après plus deux ans d’expérience dans la production de la
SaphirKeramik à l’échelle industrielle, LAUFEN a continué
à analyser les possibilités de ce matériau pour lequel une
demande de brevet a été déposée et met à profit les très fines
formes au niveau des structures et des motifs des surfaces
mais a pu, grâce à ce matériau innovant, également atteindre
de nouvelles dimensions en créant un lavabo de 120 cm
de long en SaphirKeramik, le plus grand jusqu’à présent.
Cette technique de moulage sous pression d’une efficacité
exceptionnelle est désormais également appliquée pour des
produits en SaphirKeramik fabriqués en grand nombre.
En 2014, LAUFEN a, avec les fameux designers Konstantin
Grcic et Toan Nguyen, présenté des prototypes design au
public lors d’événements design renommés tels que le salon
du meuble de Milan, l’Art Basel, Design Miami et le Festival du
Design de Londres. Les visiteurs on été séduits par les qua­
lités exceptionnelles de la céramique et surpris par la finesse
et la solidité extraordinaire des parois en SaphirKeramik.

Die seit 2013 bereits am Markt erhältliche SaphirKeramik ist
die jüngste, weltweit bedeutende Innovation des Schweizer
Unternehmens LAUFEN. Das revolutionäre Material erreicht
seine enorme Härte durch das Beimischen des auch im Saphir
vorkommenden farblosen Minerals Korund. Damit wird eine
Biegefestigkeit erzielt, die der von Stahl entspricht. Mit dem
hauchdünnen und einzigartig harten keramischen Werkstoff
können Designer fast unumschränkt experimentieren und das
klassische Regelwerk des Baddesigns über Bord werfen.
Nach mehr als zwei Jahren Erfahrung mit der Produktion
von SaphirKeramik in industriellem Massstab hat LAUFEN
die Möglichkeiten des zum Patent angemeldeten Materials
weiter ausgelotet und nutzt die extrem feinen Formen
nicht nur für exquisite Oberflächenstrukturen und ­Muster,
sondern hat mit dem innovativen Werkstoff auch neue
Dimensionen erreicht und mit einem 120 cm langen
Waschtisch in SaphirKeramik den bisher Grössten geschaf­
fen. Und die beeindruckend effiziente Druckgusstechnik
kommt nun auch bei Produkten aus SaphirKeramik, die
in hoher Stückzahl gefertigt werden, zum Einsatz.
Gemeinsam mit den herausragenden Designern Konstantin
Grcic und Toan Nguyen stellte LAUFEN 2014 auf renom­
mierten Design­Events wie der Mailänder Möbelmesse,
der Art Basel, Design Miami und dem London Design
Festival Designprototypen der Öffentlichkeit vor. Die
Besucher nahmen die wunderbaren Qualitäten der
Keramik begeistert auf – überrascht durch die faszinierend
schlanken, robusten Wandungen der SaphirKeramik.
LIBERTÀ DI RIORGANIZZAZIONE
SaphirKeramik, disponibile sul mercato già dal 2013, è l’ul­
tima innovazione di rilevanza mondiale dell’azienda svizzera
LAUFEN. Questo rivoluzionario materiale raggiunge la sua enor­
me durezza grazie all’aggiunta del corindone, il minerale inco­
lore presente anche nello zaffiro. Si ottiene così una resistenza
alla flessione corrispondente a quella dell’acciaio. Con questo
materiale ceramico sottilissimo ed eccezionalmente duro i
designer possono sperimentare praticamente senza limiti, libe­
randosi delle regole classiche del design degli ambienti bagno.
Dopo più di due anni di esperienza nella produzione di
SaphirKeramik su scala industriale, LAUFEN ha esplorato
ulteriormente le possibilità di questo materiale in corso di
brevetto e ne utilizza le forme estremamente sottili non solo
per squisiti motivi e strutture superficiali ma anche per rag­
giungere nuove dimensioni con questo innovativo materiale,
creando quello che al momento è il lavabo in SaphirKeramik
più grande, con una lunghezza di 120 cm. E ora l’efficien­
tissima tecnica di pressofusione viene utilizzata anche con i
prodotti in SaphirKeramik realizzati in serie più numerose.
Insieme ai designer di primo piano Konstantin Grcic e Toan
Nguyen, nel 2014 LAUFEN ha presentato al pubblico i pro­
pri prototipi di design nell’ambito di rinomati eventi di design
quali il Salone del Mobile di Milano, Art Basel, Design Miami
e il London Design Festival. I visitatori sono rimasti impres­
sionati dalle meravigliose qualità della ceramica e sorpresi
dalle superfici seducenti, sottili e robuste di SaphirKeramik.
Simultaneously hard and malleable, SaphirKeramik enables pieces
to be made with very thin, yet very strong walls of only 3 – 5 mm,
as well as with narrowly defined radii of only 1 – 2 mm. The slim
profile of SaphirKeramik means that it saves space, is light and envi­
ronmentally friendly. The new design characteristics of this innova­
tive material are rooted in its exceptional hardness and strength.
When the mechanical properties of the two traditional sanitary
ceramic masses – namely vitreous china and fine fire clay – are
compared, the performance of SaphirKeramik is unique even in
international comparison. The comparative values measured by the
Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing in Berlin (BAM)
for SaphirKeramik are, at an average of over 120 MPa, compa­
rable with carbon steel and twice as high as for vitreous china.
Hart und formbar zugleich, erlaubt SaphirKeramik Entwürfe mit
hauchdünnen, doch robusten 3 – 5 mm starken Wandungen sowie
eng definierten Radien von nur 1 – 2 mm. Durch ihr schlankes Profil
ist sie platzsparend, leicht und umweltfreundlich. Die neuen forma­
len Eigenschaften des innovativen Materials liegen in seiner aus­
sergewöhnlichen Härte und Festigkeit begründet. Im Vergleich der
mechanischen Eigenschaften, insbesondere der Biegefestigkeit,
der beiden traditionell verwendeten sanitärkeramischen Massen,
nämlich Vitreous China und Feinfeuerton erreicht SaphirKeramik
eine auch im internationalen Vergleich einmalige Performance.
Die durch die Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und ­prüfung Berlin
(BAM) gemessenen Vergleichswerte von SaphirKeramik liegen im
Mittelwert bei über 120 MPa; erreichen damit vergleichbare Werte
von Normalstahl und sind doppelt so hoch wie bei Vitreous China.
Aussi dure que malléable, la SaphirKeramik permet de réaliser
des maquettes présentant des parois d’une extrême finesse
et d’une grande robustesse, d’une épaisseur de 3 – 5 mm, ainsi
que des rayons étroitement définis de 1 – 2 mm seulement. Avec
son profil élancé, elle est peu encombrante, légère et écologique.
Les nouvelles propriétés de ce matériau innovant résident dans sa
dureté et sa résistance exceptionnelles. En comparaison des carac­
téristiques mécaniques, notamment la résistance à la flexion, des
deux pâtes traditionnellement utilisées pour la céramique sanitaire, à
savoir la porcelaine sanitaire et l’argile fine réfractaire, la SaphirKeramik
offre des performances uniques en leur genre, même à l’échelle
internationale. En moyenne, les valeurs de référence mesurées par
l’Institut fédéral pour la recherche et les essais de matériaux (BAM)
de Berlin pour la SaphirKeramik se situent au­delà de 120 MPa
et atteignent ainsi des valeurs comparables à celles de l’acier et
sont deux fois plus élevées que celles de la porcelaine sanitaire.
Al tempo stesso duro e plasmabile, il SaphirKeramik rende possibili
progetti con pareti estremamente sottili e tuttavia robuste dello spes­

Per quanto riguarda le caratteristiche meccaniche ed in particolare la
resistenza alla flessione dei due materiali utilizzati per la produzione
di ceramica sanitaria, e cioè il Vitreous China ed il gres fine porcel­
lanato, il SaphirKeramik consente di ottenere una performance stra­
ordinaria anche a livello internazionale. I valori di comparazione per il
SaphirKeramik, rilevati dal BAM, Materialforschung und ­prüfung Berlin
(Istituto Federale tedesco per le ricerche e le prove sui materiali), si
aggirano in media al di sopra dei 120 MPa, e sono quindi paragonabili
all’acciaio normale, e pari al doppio rispetto al Vitreous China.

Konstantin Grcic from Munich. Simple architectural
lines, extremely narrow edges and fine surface
structures make the washbasins of this collection
globally unique. The Val range includes wash­
basins, washbasin bowls, trays, bathtubs and new
bathroom furniture from the Space collection.

Val also includes a rectangular and an asymmetrical wash­
basin bowl as well as a partially concealed washbasin, each
of which is equipped with built­in storage space and has a
tactile surface texture that creates semi­dry areas. Also belong­

Suited to the SaphirKeramik objects, Konstantin Grcic has
designed a compact, free­standing bathtub in the dimen­
sions 1600 x 750 x 520 mm. The oval tub weaves a sense of
harmony into the bathroom with its lightness and elegance,
created by its extremely narrow edges, and fits perfectly
with fine washbasins. As LAUFEN manufactures the bath­
tub from the solid surface material Sentec, it can be crafted
as a single layer in one mould without sacrificing integrated
overflow, while also reducing the bathtub’s weight.
Passend zu den Objekten aus SaphirKeramik hat Konstantin
Grcic eine kompakte, freistehende Badewanne in den
Dimensionen 1600 x 750 x 520 mm entworfen. Die ovale

The new bathroom collection Ino, designed for LAUFEN by
French designer Toan Nguyen, understands itself as a fresh
interpretation of classic washbasin forms. The innovative col­
lection skilfully uses the creative possibilities of LAUFEN’s
SaphirKeramik. Elegant, inviting and almost weightless objects,
the pieces work with simple lines, creating soft yet extremely
stable walls. The collection includes a wall­mounted wash­
basin, a countertop or semi embedded washbasin bowl,
as well as high­quality bathroom furniture and a bathtub.

One of the collection’s stand out features is its sensational
washbasin with seamlessly integrated console. The easy­to­
clean shelf, which defines the space next to the generous
washbasin has a drawn up back wall, and can be located
on the left or right of the washbasin. In 2015 this piece was

A free­standing bathtub made from Sentec is available in
1700 x 750 mm and 1800 x 800 mm forms, including an inte­
grated headrest and creates a relaxing atmosphere. With its
narrow edges the oval tub looks as delicate as the washbasins
made from SaphirKeramik. The piece, distinguished by its light
weight, is made with a single layer cast from a single mould.

Nguyen has also designed a set of bathroom furniture that
visually and functionally accompanies his Ino collection. A high­
light is the ultra­thin panel on the drawer made from real wood
veneer or mirrored aluminium, which seamlessly flows over the
sides and base of the cabinet making it appear as one piece.
A matching cupboard with a corner door is also available.
Zu Ino hat Nguyen auch ein eigenes Badmöbel­Set entworfen,
das optisch wie funktional mit Kollektion harmoniert. Ein High­
light ist die hauchdünne Frontverkleidung der Schublade aus

To the Pro S family, LAUFEN has also introduced a wall­mounted,
washdown, rimless toilet in rectangular form. Here, aesthetics
are bound to high cleaning comfort – without a flushing rim
there is no place for bacteria and germs to take hold. Also new
is an additional version of LAUFEN’s popular round rimless toi­
let, now with an open attachment and LAUFEN’s very flat pro
slim toilet seat.
Neu in der Produktfamilie von LAUFEN Pro S ist ausserdem ein
wandhängendes, spülrandloses Tiefspül­WC im rechtwinkligen

LAUFEN has developed a mounting frame for the practical mirror
cabinets in its Frame 25 series, allowing these products to be
installed flush into niches, wall­mounted installations or walls.
The anodised aluminium frame is easy to install, and allows the
mirror cabinet to be mounted at the end of the construction
phase, offering additional protection against breakage. A special
handle is available to ensure ease when opening the built­in
mirror cabinets.

Für die praktischen Spiegelschränke der Serie Frame 25 hat
LAUFEN jetzt einen Einbaurahmen entwickelt, mit dessen Hilfe

LAUFEN presents a new collection of floor­level shower trays,
customisable to your individual, tailored requirements.
The cast, made from the solid composite Marbond is finished
with a gel coat that is extremely hygienic and easy to clean.
The range includes widths from 70 to 100 cm and is available
in lengths from 80 to 200 cm. The cover of the elongated outlet
hides a powerful syphon, which can also accommodate the
large volume of water from rainshower models. In standard
form the shower trays are available in white, ivory and anthra­
cite. For custom designs, the size is open to customer choice
and colour options extend to the entire RAL range.

REDUCING ENERGY CONSUMPTION
The Kartell by LAUFEN shower trays are now available with an
optional, invisibly integrated heat exchanger. Its function is as
simple as it is efficient: the warm water gathered in the shower
tray is passed through the shower outlet and then over the heat
exchanger. The heat exchanger warms the fresh flowing water
to about 25°C, without the fresh water coming into contact
with the waste water. Benefit: the fresh water is preheated
meaning less additional heat is needed to warm it to optimal
temperature, thus saving valuable energy.

Die Kartell by LAUFEN Duschwannen sind neu optional mit
einem unsichtbar integrierten Wärmetauscher erhältlich. Seine

Duschen verbrauchte, restwarme Wasser wird über den Abfluss
über den Wärmetauscher geleitet. Dieser erwärmt das fliessen­
de Frischwasser auf rund 25 °C vor ohne mit ihm in Kontakt
zu kommen. Vorteil: In der Duscharmatur muss dem vorge­
wärmten Frischwasser nun deutlich weniger Heisswasser bei­
gemischt werden, es wird also wertvolle Energie eingespart.
RECEVEUR DE DOUCHE AVEC ÉCHANGEUR

Les receveurs de douche Kartell by LAUFEN sont maintenant
disponibles en option avec un échangeur de chaleur inté­
gré et invisible. En l’occurrence, il fonctionne non seulement
facilement mais aussi efficacement: lorsque la douche est
utilisée, l’eau usée encore tiède est canalisée par l’écoule­
ment via l’échangeur de chaleur. Celui­ci chauffe l’eau fraîche
qui s’écoule à 25 °C sans entrer en contact avec celle­ci.
L’avantage: dans la robinetterie de la douche, l’eau fraîche déjà
chauffée n’est alors mélangée qu’avec nettement moins d’eau
chaude ce qui permet d’économiser une énergie précieuse.

di acqua fino a circa 25 °C senza entrare in contatto con l’ac­
qua. Vantaggio: a questo punto la quantità d’acqua calda da

toilet tank that has a water­saving dual flush system, meaning

With Twintronic LAUFEN offers a simple and elegant system that
uses infrared technology to facilitate an automatic flush function
for use in public bathrooms. A visual highlight of Twintronic is
its ornamental outlet, which is available as a straight version in
200 mm or as a curved form in 175 or 225 mm. The infrared
sensors and optional temperature controls are integrated into
an aesthetically pleasing round top. The Twintronic is mounted
with the popular, hidden Simibox system.
Urinals with touchless controls are as common in public bath­
rooms as automatic taps are. The intelligent control that is
available for the urinals Lema and Antero records frequency of
use and initiates demand­driven flushing at various preset vol­

The new thermostatic mixers from LAUFEN for surface or flush
mounting convinces with user­friendly details. The temperature
and water flow controls are arranged on one axis, making them
easy to operate with just one hand. They also have a child­
friendly stop button, which limits the temperature to 38°C. With
a simple twist of the handle, the water flow can be continuously
regulated. All thermostatic faucets also feature a built­in safety
function, stopping the hot water supply automatically if the cold
water supply fails. Thanks to insulation of the hot water flow,
overheating of the fittings is also prevented.
