The itinerary starts from Piazza del Cavatore and
follows the old road used daily by miners.
After a short while, the asphalt gives way to a dirt
road, which follows the contour line and does not present any elevation difficulties.
Basically, you ride along a hillside track on the south-western spurs of Monte
Calamita. The view is immediately breathtaking, encompassing the silhouetted
mountains and the western coast of Elba overlooked by Monte Capanne.
The stretch of sea that appears below the road is Golfo Stella, with the Morcone,
Pareti and Cala dell’Innamorata inlets. On the right, about 6 km from the start,
is the detour for the Calamita mine. The detour is highly recommended, as is
a guided tour of the mining complex.
The road continues around Monte Calamita, gradually gaining

height up the slopes of Poggio Polveraio, without becoming
MEDITERRANEA too strenuous. The view over the sea of Remaiolo bay and the
unmistakable silhouette of Montecristo Island on the horizon

becomes even more spectacular.
When it reaches the Fosso di Remaiolo, the road begins to climb again towards
Piano del Gorgo and the Ripalte Estate and its vineyards. 10 km from the start,
the itinerary reaches its highest point at 216 MASL. A ride through the Ripalte
vineyards is recommended. As well as the chance to tour the winery, the road
down to the Ginevro Mine archaeo-mineral area also starts here.
Tours of the mine can be booked in advance. Following the signs for the
“Calamita” red trail from here, you leave the vineyards at your back and begin
to descend the eastern slopes of Monte Calamita.
The dirt road runs through Mediterranean scrub, offering constant views of the
sea and the mainland coast. After about 1.5 km, you can make a detour
towards the coast, going down towards Stagnone bay, or continue northwards
towards the Sassi Neri mining area, where a small green lake can be seen
between the road and the coast. Riding not far above sea level, you soon come
to another possible detour for a swim at Punta Buzzancone.
From this point, you follow the coast, skirting beaches, inlets, coves and small
peninsulas. After Punta Buzzancone, you pass Istia bay and Liscoli cay,
Calanova, Malpasso beach, Punta di Cala Nuova and Ferrato beach. From
Straccoligno beach, the road turns inland again, running uphill all the way on
asphalt to Capoliveri.
THE ITINERARY IS EXTRAORDINARILY SCENIC, AND INCLUDES THE CHANCE TO SWIM
AT ENCHANTING BEACHES, COVES AND INLETS. THE ARCHAEO-MINERAL TOUR OF THE
CALAMITA AND GINEVRO MINES IS OF GREAT INTEREST.

Livorno Province has put together an extensive
programme of initiatives to endorse and promote the
area’s tourism services devoted to cycling holidays.
Hospitality for tourism cyclists represents one of the
most important aspects of this project, and involves
the creation of a chain of specialized accommodation

apartment hotels and holiday villages) adhering to
a Policy Document that guarantees possession
of specific requisites.

Territoriums zum Fahrradtourismus zu fördern und zu

Die Tour beginnt in Capoliveri an der Piazza del Cavatore. Man folgt
der Straße, die einst von den Bergleuten täglich benutzt wurde.
Nach kurzer Zeit endet der Asphaltbelag und es geht auf Schotter
weiter; dieser ebene Abschnitt besitzt kein schwieriges Höhenprofil.
Man fährt nun oberhalb der Küste, am Südwesthang des Monte Calamita entlang. Die Aussicht ist
sofort atemberaubend: man erkennt die Berge und Küsten des westlichen Teils der Insel, die vom
Monte Capanne dominiert werden. Der unterhalb der Straße sichtbare Meeresabschnitt gehört
zum Golfo Stella mit den Buchten von Morcone, Pareti und Cala dell’Innamorata.
Etwa 6 km vom Startpunkt entfernt trifft man rechts auf die Abzweigung zu den Bergwerken von
Calamita. Dieser Abstecher ist sehr zu empfehlen, eine Besichtigung mit Führung in den ehemaligen
Erzminen eingeschlossen.
Die Straße führt weiter um den Monte Calamita und gewinnt an Höhe; der Anstieg am Hang des
Poggio Polveraio ist jedoch nicht sehr anstrengend. Die Sicht auf das Meer mit der Bucht von Remaiolo
wird immer spektakulärer; am Horizont ist der unverwechselbare Umriss der Insel Montecristo
zu erkennen.
In der Nähe des Grabens Fosso di Remaiolo beginnt die Straße erneut anzusteigen und führt über
Piano del Gorgo zum Weingut Tenuta delle Ripalte. Nach ca. 10 km vom Start erreicht man hier mit
216 m ü.d.M den höchsten Punkt der Strecke.
Es wird empfohlen, die Weinberge von Ripalte und den Weinkeller zu besuchen.
Hier beginnt auch die bergab führende Straße zu den Bergwerken von Ginevro, ein archäologischer
Bereich, in dem man nach vorheriger Anmeldung die Erzminen besichtigen kann. Von nun an den
Hinweisen des rot gekennzeichneten Wegs „Calamita“ folgen. Man fährt an den Osthängen des
Monte Calamita ab und lässt die Weinberge hinter sich.
Die Schotterstraße führt durch die Landschaft der mediterranen Macchia und bietet ständig
Aussichten auf das Meer und die Küste des Festlands. Nach ca. 1,5 km kann man einen Abstecher
zur Küste machen, indem man zur Bucht von Stagnone herunterfährt, oder in Nordrichtung zum
Bergwerk Sassi Neri weiterfahren, wo zwischen der Straße und der Küste ein kleiner, grün
schimmernder Teich liegt. Die Strecke führt nun nah am Meer entlang. Kurz darauf bietet sich eine
weitere Bademöglichkeit an der Punta Buzzancone. Von diesem Punkt an der Küste folgen: man
fährt an Stränden, Buchten und kleinen Halbinseln vorbei.
Hinter Punta Buzzancone passiert die Strecke die Bucht von Istia mit der kleinen Insel Liscoli,
Calanova, den Strand von Malpasso, Punta di Cala Nuova und den Strand von Ferrato; beim Strand
von Straccoligno biegt die Straße erneut ins Inland ab, und man kehrt in einem konstanten Anstieg,
diesmal auf Asphalt, nach Capoliveri zurück.
