10,000 TICKETS, 450 ARTISTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, 8 AWARDED CATEGORIES
ALL THE FACTS & FIGURES ABOUT THE IX FLORENCE BIENNALE
The 2013 edition closed and the Effetto Biennale begins
Over ten thousands sold tickets, 450 artists from all over the world, nine awarded categories (Painting,
Sculpture, Works on Paper, Installation, Mixed Media, Digital Art, Photography, Video), eight special mentions, five Matrix Awards (artistic hair styling), over 30 collateral events in the city: the IX Florence Biennale
(November 30th – December 8th 2013) closed and the Effetto Biennale begins.
Dedicated to the theme “Ethics, DNA of Art”, the 2013 edition conferred the Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime
Achievement Award to three great international artists, in Palazzo Vecchio: Anish Kapoor, Franco Mussida
and Henrik Jurkowski.
Many “Events in the Event” drove the Florence Biennale to expand out of the Fortezza da Basso’s traditional
core. Among them, were the events such as the collaboration with Arte da Mangiare, for a walk through
the olive groves of the Buonamici farm in Fiesole (with unexpected incursion of Cesare Prandelli, coach of
the national soccer team) and artistic menus served in several restaurants in the city. Artistic performances
and quality food have also took place at the Studio Rosai, Osteria Toscanella, as part of the event called
La Ribollita, the first of three events that will take place in 2014.
Three temporary exhibitions as part of the “Events in the Event” series took place during Biennale. Oblate Library hosted ILLUSTRATING FLORENCE, photographic show curated by Maurizio Gabbana (7 photographers exhibiting 7 shots each). The Sala della Musica of the ex-Courthouse of Florence turned into CASINO DELL’ARTE opening its doors to 40 artists selected by Artistic Director Rolando Bellini (curated by Melanie
Zefferino). LINEA Spazio Arte Contemporanea, home base of the Florence Biennale (via delle Porte Nuove,
10), made room for the BESTIARIO FANTASTICO, collective show realized in partnership with Galleria Dieffe of
Turin extended until January 6th 2014, another event that is part of EFFETTO BIENNALE, is Pasquale Celona’s
solo show, IL MIO CANTO HA DEPOSTO OGNI ARTIFICIO, ongoing at Basilica of Santa Croce until December
21st 2013.
In addition to the Biennale’s success the IX Florence Biennale published catalogue, edited by Fausto Lupetti
Editore, sold hundreds of copies during the event and is still available in in print and ebook.
