Coppa d'Oro delle Dolomiti 2014: Mozzi/Biacca win back to back after the Mille Miglia ACI Belluno chairman Gianpaolo Bottacin: "An event that enables people to discover the fascination of Veneto’s Dolomites" Cortina d'Ampezzo, 20 July 2014 -- An epic challenge. Like the one between Hector and Achilles in the Iliad, or between Coppi and Bartali. Mozzi/Biacca in a Triumph TR2 against Cané/Galliani in a Lancia Aprilia: leading the field over the bends of the Pordoi pass. The talented winners of the last Mille Miglia against the vintage car veterans and winners of 10 Mille Miglia and 7 Coppa d'Oro delle Dolomiti. The battle for the podium of the race Tazio Nuvolari defined "the mountain Mille Miglia" gave us some incredible thrills. The winners yesterday in Cortina d'Ampezzo were the team of Giordano Mozzi and Stefania Biacca, newlyweds and enfants prodiges of regularity racing. After a breath taking recovery over the Pordoi, from 4th to 2nd, Giuliano Cané and Lucia Galliani had to content themselves with second place, so it was a regular passing of the baton. 3rd place went to the Brescia entrepreneur Domenico Battagliola and his co-driver Giacomo Salvalaggio in a 1955 Austin Healey 100 BN1. From the podium Giordano Mozzi commented that "winning the Mille Miglia and the Coppa d'Oro delle Dolomiti in the same year is an immense joy. What these two regularity races have in common is undoubtedly the beauty of the landscape you drive through. Both competitions are very difficult technically. I will continue to race with my wife and co-driver. In January 2015 we’ll be taking on the historic Rally in Montecarlo". Finishing “only” 2nd in this year’s Coppa d’Oro, Cané said "it was a great race and a thrilling duel with Mozzi. We can say the baton has been passed on, for this year. But I’ve no intention to abdicate. With all the fair play that characterizes this event". As in previous years, the 53rd Coppa d'Oro delle Dolomiti rewarded courage, the passion rooted in a glorious past, bringing together man, machine and nature, today as it did in the ‘50s. The legend of the gentleman driver is part of it, as was seen very well on the 14 Dolomite passes and the 10% gradients. 3rd placed Domenico Battagliola: "I’m in 7th heaven: 3rd is a big satisfaction for me, being relatively new to the sport, especially as this is a very difficult race technically. I spent three days with some splendid people in a race that’s very sociable compared to the solitude that competing in the Mille Miglia involves. The Coppa d'Oro delle Dolomiti has every chance of becoming the Mille Miglia of tomorrow, thanks in part to the hard work and talent of an organizer like Alessandro Casali". At the prize ceremony, the chairman of ACI Belluno, Gianpaolo Bottacin, expressed his satisfaction with a vintage car race that enables people to discover the beauty and allure of Veneto’s Dolomites and helps assert Veneto’s major role in Italy’s international tourism industry. The chairman of the race organization committee, Alessandro Casali, was also very positive in his judgement of the event: "The decision to bring the race forward from September to July, as in the early years, was a success: we had splendid weather, which helped the drivers on mountain roads that are far from easy and produced splendid views. The roadside participation was fabulous too, with crowds of fans photographing their favourite drivers. It should also be remembered that the Coppa d'Oro delle Dolomiti is not only an important sporting event but also, and above all, a flywheel for the local economy: hotels and restaurants in Cortina were fully booked over the four days and the Veneto and Alto Adige regions enjoyed national and international visibility. I am proud to have helped reverse the trend in this seemingly endless economic crisis and make our contribution to the GNP".
