SELECTED INFORMATION
CV SUMMARY
Education: in 1995 he took the Master of Science in Biological Sciences at Pisa University (“Factors affecting Wolf
distribution in the Northern Apennines, Italy”). From 1997 to 2000, Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology (Animal Biology)
on the behavioural ecology of the crested porcupine Hystrix cristata, University of Siena (Italy). From 2000 till 2004,
he won a 4-year grant for post-doctoral research to study new methodologies applied to radio-tracking monitoring
and habitat modelling in mammals. In 2004, he was called as researcher at the Interuniversity Center of Wildlife
Research and Environmental Improvement of Florence University (Italy).
He took part in several research and management projects, and from 2000 until 2005 he was the scientific and
executive coordinator of the project “Reintroduction of the red deer and of the roe deer in the Cilento and Vallo di
Diano National Park, and of the projects “Conservation of the roe deer, reintroduction of the red deer, and wild boar
management” and “Experimental plan for the wild boar management” in the Pollino National Park”. (Cumulative
budget, about 1.000.000€).
He is now working with several public research institutes in Italy and abroad (University of Calabria, University of
Catania, University of Pisa, National Research Center of Pisa, University of Florence, University of Lousanne, Office
of the Advisor for the Environment of the Royal Court of the Sultanate of Oman; University of Calgary, Canada).
He is proceeding with his research on animal behaviour and ecology issues on behavioural ecology, habitat
evaluation modelling, habitat use and selection studies in medium-large mammals (wolf, bear, crested
porcupine, red deer, roe deer, wild boar), on strategic impact assessment, and on methodologies of data
investigations and analysis through a interdisciplinary approach.
He is also involved with the Dept of Ecology of the Univ. of Calabria in a long term project on marine turtle ecology
(factors affecting Caretta caretta nesting in southern Italy), and in a study on the influences of land cover and climatic
change on an avian population of Petronia petronia in the Alps. He is collaborating with other research groups in Italy
(Univ. of Florence, Univ. of Calabria) in studies on insects behaviour (social wasps, and carabids). He is also actively
involved in biomedical research issues mainly related to allergology and Sub-Lingual Immuno-Therapy.
At present he is the Executive supervisor for the Univ. of Calabria of a research project entitled “New methodologies
and techniques for the development of an integrated system for Strategic Evaluation Assessment” (VAS-SIST),
funded by the Ministry of the Innovation and of the Research and University (cod. MIUR 3334; ca 2,000,000€), in
collaboration with INFORM Srl (Padova, Italy), the Dept. of Ecology of the Calabria University (Italy), and the Dept. of
Mathematics and Informatics of Catania University, Italy.
Teaching: since 1995, he is Lecturer in “Environmental modelling in wildlife management” (postgraduate Masters
on conservation and management of natural resources for Univ. of Siena, Univ. of Florence, Univ. of Pavia). In 2003,
he was Lecturer of a undergraduate course in “Introduction to analysis of biological data” at Calabria University,
and from 2005 he is Lecturer at Florence University for undergraduate courses in “Ecological statistics” at the
Mathematics, Physics, and Natural Sciences Faculty, and in “General biology” at the Faculty of Psychology and at
the Faculty of Education Sciences.
He is member of the Associazione Teriologica Italiana (ATIt; Italian Association of Theriology) and of the Unione
Zoologica Italiana (UZI; Italian Union of Zoology); he published more than 35 international and national scientific
papers (25 peer-reviewed papers only in the period 2005 – today, ca 10 papers/year), and he is a referee for several
journals in the field of ecology, animal ecology and behaviour (e.g. Animal Behaviour; European Journal of Wildlife
Research; Ethology, Ecology Evolution).
