Ordering a meal in Italian using the present
conditional
Use the verbs:
 Vorrei ..(I would like)
 Gradirei (I would like) more cordial
An example,
Customer: “Salve, vorrei una bistecca?
Waiter:
“Certo, signore/a, gradirebbe qualcosa d’altro?
Customer: “Vorrei da bere un’acqua gassata?”
Waiter:
“Gradirebbe qualcosa d’altro?
Customer: “ No, La ringrazio”
The Present Conditional
Expresses desires and wishes
 Corresponds to English: would + verb
 I would work
 The rule in Italian is to drop the final –e of the
infinitive and add appropriate endings.
 Exception: for the verbs ending in –are change the a of
the infinitive ending to e.
 -are

-ire

Uses of the Present Conditional
 The present conditional is often used to make polite
requests.
For example:
Mi faresti un favore?
Sì, io ti farei un favore.
Potresti aiutarmi con il compito?
Sì, io potrei aiutarti con il compito.
Non c’è l’ho sul mio computer.
 Present Conditional is also used to express what one
should or shouldn’t do, use ‘dovere’ in the present
conditional.
For example:
Dovrei studiare di più.
Rebecca dovrebbe telefonare alla mamma più spesso.
