La Livenza
The Livenza river rises in
Friuli Venezia Giulia, a
region which borders
Veneto, in a place
named GORGAZZO. The
place where the river
springs, has a karstic
characteristic and water
comes out from a narrow
gorge at the feet of the
Cansiglio Park in Friuli. The
hole from which water
rises is funnel-shaped;
under the earth the
waters gather coming
from the upstanding park
and the drainage basin is
probably 90KM long. The
GORGAZZO was
frequently searched by
underwater speleologists
in past times, but after
many incidents they gave
up.
Two kilometres farther
there is a second spring of
the river Livenza, just near
the Santissima Sanctuary.
Along its course, the river bed
marks the boundaries between
VENETO and FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA
touching numerous municipalities;
among them there are:
Polcenigo, Caneva,
Fontanafredda, Sacile, Gaiarine,
Brugnera, Portobuffolè, Prata di
Pordenone,Mansuè, Pasiano di
Pordenone, Gorgo al
Monticano, Meduna di
Livenza, Motta di Livenza, San
Stino di Livenza, Cessalto, Torre di
Mosto, Eraclea e Caorle.
Il Monticano
The MONTICANO river, in ancient
venetian language “MONTEGAN”, flows
entirely in Veneto and exactly , in the
territory of the province of Treviso.
It starts to flow in the open air from the
mount PIAI, 540 metres high, from three
different springs, exactly at COZZUOLO
in VITTORIO VENETO, and the three
branches are named Monticanello, Rio
Montagnana, Rio Col di Stella. Rio
Montagnana is considered the main
tributary for the MONTICANO.
One hundred metres farther, the Rio Col
di Stella makes a jump of 50 metres and
creates a fall named Pisson. The pool at
the end of the fall can be easily
reached through a gorge made of
malm, sandstone and conglomerate: it
is a spectacular view.
