Aims at the research, development and integration
of innovative technologies to prove the viability of
advanced biorefineries taking into acount the
entire value chain and sustainability issues
 It will be implemented through two topics

Topic 3.3.1: Sustainable Biorefineries
 Targeted at the funding of a limited
number, large, multi-disciplinary,
Collaborative Projects
 Scope includes:
 address the entire value chain
 sustainable processing of biomass into building
blocks for production of bio-based chemicals,
materials, second generation biofuels, power and
heat
 integrated multi-disciplinary approach
 demonstrate performance, sustainability and feasibility at least
at pilot scale in an integrated approach
 demonstrate the part of the biorefinery complex that is closer to
the market at industrial pilot plant scale
 assess for the entire value chain the environmental, economic
and social sustainability including food competition, impact on
water use and biodiversity, land use, soil carbon stock balance
and fertility, greenhouse gases balance, toxicological risks,
energy efficiency

 A two-step procedure
 Issuing of Specific Guide for Applicants
 Proposals will be evaluated remotely with the
consensus session in Brussels
 Stage 1 proposals
Deadline : 2nd December 2008 17:00 pm
Proposals evaluated on the basis of their S/T Quality & Impact
Limited size: 20 pages, A4, 11 points, 15 mm margin
Evaluation : remote phase December 2008, consensus phase January
2009
 For each criterion marks from 0 to 5 will be given, with the possibility
of 0.5 point scores
 Thresholds are : S/T 4/5, Impact 3/5, overall threshold 8/10





 Stage 2 proposals

Second Stage proposals evaluated against the entire set of evaluation criteria
Hearings may be organised
For each criterion marks from 0 to 5 will be given, with the possibility of 0.5
point scores.
 Evaluation : remote phase May / June 2009, consensus phase June 2009.
 Evaluation results: estimated end of July 2009

information, synergies and cross-fertilization
between projects in the field of Biorefineries
 Scope includes:
 promote coordination of on-going
research at European and national levels across
Biotechnology, Energy, Industrial Technologies and
Environment on distinctive features of the biorefinery
concept
 overcome fragmentation and develop cross-thematic
synergies, identifying gaps and overlaps, defining
research priority needs and infrastructure
 Information exchange and cross fertilization in any aspect
of the entire value chain, the energy efficiency, the
economic, socio-economic and environmental
performance, as well as other sustainability issues
 dissemination of results
