baptized in the parish
church of Stratford-onAvon in Warwickshire
on April 26 1564. The
exact date of his birth is
not known. William
Shakespeare was not the
first child. A Joan was
baptized in 1558 and a
Margaret in 1562.
Margaret was
buried in 1563 and
Joan must have died
young, thought her
burial is not
recorded, as a second
joan was baptized
in 1569. A Gilbert
was baptized in
1566, an Anne in
1571, a Richard in
1574 and an
Edmund in 1580.
As a youn man, he
went up to
London to seek his
fortune, leaving
his wife and
children in
Stratford. He
began as an actor,
but his company
soon discovered his
true talent and his
reputation as a
dramatist grew
rapidly. He died in
1616 and was
buried in the
parish church of
his town.
Shakespeare’s plays are unequalled in their
variety. The dates of composition are often
controversial as a complete edition of them
was published only after his death, in 1623.
Shakespeare’s creative work is generally
divided into four periods:
1) The period of experiments (1590-94)
2) The period of the great comedies of his
maturity (1595-1600)
3) The period of the great tragedies (1601-08)
4) The period of the last romantic dramas
(1609-13)
