President’s Message
Dear Members and Friends,
I am pleased to present to you the 2007
Co.As.It. Annual Report, which provides an
opportunity to reminisce over a plethora of
achievements. This year our Board guided a
competent Management Team to consolidate
and expand our services in line with our Strategic
Plan. Co.As.It.'s profile has strengthened within
our community as we continue to promote and
work closely with local and Italian media and
funding bodies.
I am proud of what our dedicated Co.As.It. Staff
has achieved and I share with you some of the
salient accomplishments of the year reported in
the Community Services, Education and Italian
Bilingual School divisions:
•
Once again our celebrated Italian National
Ball has allowed us to raise sufficient funds to
open a new Centre Based Dementia Specific
Respite Day Care Centre in the Inner West. I am
pleased that our efforts and funds have been a
catalyst and the NSW State Government is now
funding this Centre on an ongoing basis.
•
The launch of “Home Help” - an exciting
new initiative which provides private in-home
support to help ease the growing waiting lists for
government subsidised services.
•
Our Italian Bilingual School has officially
been rewarded through the offer of a 20 year
lease by the NSW Department of Lands for part
of the Yasmar property in Haberfield.
•
A $500,000 capital grant from the Federal
Government in October 2007 as a contribution
to the impending construction of the new
premises of the Italian Bilingual School.
•
The prestigious “Special Achievement
Award for Outstanding Contribution to the
Welfare and Education of the Italian Community
in NSW since 1968” awarded to Co.As.It. by the
Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
•
The donation of 250,000 Euros by
Fondazione Cassamarca as a contribution to the
building of new premises for the Italian Bilingual
School.
backed by Managers and staff members that are
very alive and committed to keeping us a vibrant
and switched-on entity. We remain positive as an
organisation as we face the future and work our
way through the daily challenges that our
community and clients offer us.
Our achievements would not have been possible
without the support of so many dedicated and
compassionate people. While it is practically
impossible to list them all, a deserving mention
must go to Minister Kristina Keneally, Minister
Tony Kelly, Minister Verity Firth, Ms. Angela
D'Amore, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells,
and Consul General Dott. Benedetto Latteri and
his team, Cav. Pino Musso and the Members of
Comites, the Italian media, in particular Mr.
Armando Tornari (La Fiamma) and Mr. Marco
Lucchi (SBS), Leichhardt Council, the Leichhardt
Chamber of Commerce and the Italian Chamber
of Commerce and Industry.
We conclude 2007 by launching a celebratory
year. In 2008 we plan to host a stream of
important events and initiatives which celebrate
Co.As.It.'s 40th Birthday! These will include an
Anniversary luncheon during which we will
acknowledge and thank all those that voluntarily,
dedicated time, and in some cases their lives, to
the benefit of the Italian community through
Co.As.It.
As an organisation we've had to evolve how we
manage and deliver services for the changing
needs of our community. Notwithstanding this I
acknowledge and express my most sincere
gratitude to all our past subcommittee and
advisory board members.
Last but not least I herewith extend my personal
appreciation and that of Co.As.It.'s Board to the
growing number of staff, who continually and
professionally dedicate their time and skills to the
mission of Co.As.It.

reassure you that our experienced Board is

Dear members and friends,
2007 has been a fantastic year - extremely
demanding of all of us but also very successful.
I am very honoured to be working with an
incredibly committed and supportive Board of
Directors and a growing number of professionals,
which make leading Co.As.It. very satisfying and
very addictive.
The Community Services team has continued to
be managed impeccably by Thomas Camporeale
who has maintained a high standard of services
throughout the Community Services Division.
Two new initiatives have been implemented. The
first was the restructure of our Daycare service
(effective from January 2008) in order to establish
a more effective and efficient service which will
address present and future needs. The second,
our new Home Help service, is definitely an
exciting program which, we are confident, will be
well received by our community. You will find
details of many other exciting initiatives,
partnerships and programs in this report. Finally it
is important for me to acknowledge Minister
Kristina Keneally's decision to choose Co.As.It.
as the venue to launch “Ageing 2030” - a new
planning initiative on services for the ageing and
aged population of NSW. A clear recognition of
Co.As.It.'s important role within the aged care
sector.
The Italian Bilingual School (IBS), has continued
to grow under the guidance of the Principal
Glenda Fegent. Through Glenda's very efficient
work style and approach new staff were
employed and new programs for students and
families were introduced (including camps,
participation in inter-school sporting
competitions, musical performances, etc). IBS
has an inclusive and friendly atmosphere which
makes IBS a unique learning experience for all
children.
In our Education Division we have farewelled Lina
Di Donato who was Co.As.It.'s Education
Manager for 5 years. I thank her for her
unmatched dedication and for her work at

improving the performance and quality of all the
programs conducted under the umbrella of
Education, including the always innovative and
popular activities of the Italian Heritage program.
The new Education Manager, Alessandro Di
Prinzio, has already demonstrated great
dedication by involving himself not only in the day
to day management of the Education Division but
also in lobbying and networking activities, vital to
our education program and the success of Italian
language education in NSW.
In 2007 we launched 2 new and exciting
websites for Co.As.It. and IBS which have
received very positive feedback. It is now
possible to find information on Co.As.It.'s
services, download information and purchase
resources plus conveniently enrol in classes and
pay for some of the user-pay services we
provide. We have also developed a staff only
section on the Co.As.It. website so that staff can
access policies, procedures, forms and other
employment related information. In 2008 we will
be also improving the bilingual features of our
website.
We have continued, and will continue, to place
great emphasis on the value of performance
management and staff professional and personal
development via supervision, team work and
training opportunities.
I look forward to another productive and
innovative year in 2008.

Community Services
2007 was a remarkably busy year for community
services. Whilst the team worked tirelessly at
maintaining previously identified priority areas, a
huge focus for the year was also on service
expansion, new projects and partnership
building.
The staff employed in this sector of Co.As.It.
include social workers, psychologists, service
coordinators, welfare workers and community
care staff. The team of 75 staff is employed
across a range of disciplines to enable Co.As.It.
to meet the needs of individuals within the
community. However, a significant role is also
fulfilled by a team of 70 volunteers who assist in
the centre based daycare program as well as the
community visitors scheme. We take this
opportunity to acknowledge the work and
dedication of both staff and volunteers.
Community Aged Care Packages (CACP)
CACP continued to generate increasing demand
for service throughout 2007. In order to alleviate
waiting periods for service, Co.As.It. continued to
lobby for additional packages at a local level.
Leading up to the 2007 Aged Care Approvals
Round (ACAR), Co.As.It. sought support from
local Members of Parliament and the broader
community to identify a strong case for increased
funding. The funding round saw an allocation of
20 additional packages which brought the total
funded packages to 220. Whilst this certainly
assisted in alleviating waiting times for the
program towards the end of 2007, it clearly did
not allow us to meet the growing demand.
Co.As.It. also realised the necessity of adding
more support to the CACP team in 2007. The
position of CACP Team Leader was introduced
providing assistance to the CACP Coordinators.
This position has responsibilities for staff training
and support as well as day-to-day supervision of
the CACP Program.
Centre Based Daycare (CBDC)
The CBDC Program provides for both the frail
aged as well as those members of our
community living with dementia. In 2007
Co.As.It. made a conscious decision to open a
new centre for older Italians living with dementia
in the inner west. This decision allowed Co.As.It.
to alleviate waiting periods for the inner west
daycare program but also enabled the
organisation to develop a new service for the
area. The growing demand for dementia specific
care and support has been identified in the 0609 Strategic Plan as a major priority area. Thanks
to the fundraising efforts and the generous
support of the community, Co.As.It. raised
enough funds through the Italian National Ball to
open and sustain the group for at least 12
months. The group was opened in July 2007 and
within 4 weeks was operating at capacity. Once
the group was established, the focus shifted to
sourcing alternative funding to sustain the group
well into the future. Towards the end of 2007
Co.As.It. was notified that the service would be
funded by the Home and Community Care
(HACC) Program administered by the
Department of Ageing, Disability and Homecare
commencing January 2008. This is an
achievement for which Co.As.It. is extremely
proud.
2007 also saw a major restructure within the
daycare program, which was designed to allow
greater support to daycare staff and the
standardisation of the program across regions.
The daycare structure was amended to include
one Team Leader, two full time equivalent Centre
Coordinators and a team of assistants and
drivers. This new structure has enabled Co.As.It.
to focus entirely on meeting the individual needs
of care recipients whilst at the same time
enabling further growth of the program. In line
with the Strategic Plan of the organisation,
daycare expansion is planned for the near future
as this service is seen as both essential and
beneficial for the growing numbers of frail and
house bound members of the community.
In 2007 Co.As.It. conducted a Client Satisfaction
Survey of its CBDC program. The survey was
conducted by an individual external to the
program. The report highlighted that Co.As.It. is
providing a quality service to care recipients. The
report revealed, amongst other things, that 100%
of respondents claimed that they are satisfied
with the service and 99% are satisfied with the
help they receive from the staff. A full copy of the

Activities for the daycare program were increased
in 2007 and included: trips to Wollongong,
increased outings to local venues (eg the Fish
Market and Star City); cake baking days, craft
days, etc.

Community Services
Mental Health
Drug and Alcohol Program
The mental health team continued to focus on
the provision of individual counselling for those
living with a mental illness along with their family
members and carers. The program experienced
a 14% increase in demand for service during
2007, particularly for individuals living in the inner
west. Waiting times were managed to a
maximum of four weeks with urgent cases given
high priority at all times.
In 2007, the Drug and Alcohol program was very
active in supporting state funded anti-smoking
campaigns and in disseminating information to
the Italian community on the ill effects of tobacco
and its use. In partnership with The NSW
Quitline, Multicultural Health Communication
Service, an Italian Quitline was established during
2007. This service, contracted to Co.As.It. was
officially launched in August by the Hon. Verity
Firth, Minister for Cancer Research.
Educational campaigns and collaborative work
was also maintained during the year. Some of
the important achievements of the team during
the year include:
•
Presentation of a poster titled “A
psychodynamic study of the prevalence and
peculiar features of mental disorders in a cohort
of Italian-Australians undergoing counselling” at
the NSW NGO Mental Health Conference titled
“Count me in” held in Sydney.
•
Seminar presentation on “Emotions and
Illness: a Holistic Approach to Cancer” for the
Cancer Council.
In collaboration with the Youth and Family
Worker, the Drug and Alcohol Worker ran a
series of workshops in high schools throughout
Sydney entitled, 'Talking Drugs: Facts and
Myths'. This workshop was presented to
students of Italian at four high schools and
incorporated Italian vocabulary and elements of
Italian culture in the discussion.
•
Seminar Presentation on “Mental Disorders”
for the South-East Neighbourhood Centre.
Youth and Family Program
•
Seminar presentation on “Stress and
Depression” for the Canterbury Division of
General Practice, Multicultural Aged and
Disability Service.
•
Seminar Presentation on “Grief and
Bereavement in the Italian Community” at Calvary
Hospital.
•
Presentation of a paper titled “A study of
the prevalence and peculiar features of mental
disorders in a cohort of Italian-Australians
undergoing counseling” at the TheMHS
Conference 2007, in Melbourne.
•
Seminar on “Grief among Italian-Australians”
for the Ryde Mental Health Service and
Gladesville Community Aid, at San Antonio
Nursing Home in Ryde.
•
Two half day seminars held at both Club
Marconi and Co.As.It. Head Office during Mental
Health Week. The theme for the sessions was
'Relationships in the Italian Community' and drew
on the expertise of the psychologists at Co.As.It.
as well as the Drug and Alcohol and Youth and
Family Workers. The events were attended by
150 people over the two days.

This vital service ensures that a caller is now able
to speak to somebody in Italian at the point of
calling Quitline without the need of having to
involve an interpreter.
The Youth and Family Worker produced and
presented the ViVa Leichhardt Short Film Festival
in June 2007. The event was held at Martini Bar
before an enthusiastic capacity crowd of 300 as
part of the activities of the Sydney Italian Festival.
Twelve films were screened in the finals and the
winner was Horsley Park massacres by Linda
Mirabilio. The aim of the festival was to foster
community and encourage creativity amongst
younger members of the Italian Australian
community.
The Youth and Family Worker focussed also on
increasing the media presence of Co.As.It. in
relation to discussions concerning younger
people. To this end, radio interviews were
conducted on a range of topics including
bullying, new technologies, youth suicide, binge
drinking and schoolies week.
Community Services
Community Partners Program (CPP)
The Community Partners Program continued to
focus on the production of resources to assist
older Italians access appropriate aged care
services. A resource booklet was produced
entitled 'Elenco Servizi' designed to provide
available service types and descriptions of
individual services throughout Sydney. The
booklet was officially launched in July and
presented to countless seniors groups across
Sydney.
Partnerships with the aged care sector were
maintained during the year. The partnership
established with Amity Group was consolidated
and further support was provided to the
organisation in relation to the needs and
preferences of Italian residents. The CPP staff
continued to provide briefings to staff of
residential care facilities in an attempt to provide
practical information on how to direct care to
people of Italian background.

diversional therapist within aged care facilities,
Dementia, Environmental awareness and
Depression and Anxiety.
Home Help
In 2007 Co.As.It. launched Home Help, a new
'user pays' service. The program provides
personalised and high quality services catering to
the individual needs of service recipients. This
service comes as a direct response to a growing
need within the community for care that is both
culturally and linguistically sensitive.
Home Help provides low level care to people in
their own homes with the aim of supporting
independent living. Services may include
personal care, cleaning and shopping. However,
the program can provide additional services like
gardening and lawn mowing as well as the
organisation of allied health support like in-home
podiatry or physiotherapy. Further to this,
Co.As.It. commenced brokerage of staff to other
like funded organisations wishing to access
Italian speaking staff.
Senior Citizens' Week was celebrated with two
days of functions, one at Conca d'Oro and the
other at Villa Rosa in Leichhardt. The event has
become a tradition at Co.As.It. and incorporates
lunch, entertainment and great fun. The focus of
the event is on acknowledging the wonderful
contribution of senior citizens to families and
local communities. The event was attended by
600 people over the two days and guest of
honour included the Italian Consul General, Mr
Benedetto Latteri and local councillors.
The Aged Project Officers continued to deliver
the 'Mind Your Mind' seminars to senior Italian
groups. These seminars, developed by the
Alzheimer's Association, focus on healthy ageing
and healthy minds with the aim of reducing the
likelihood of developing dementia and
Alzheimer's in older age.
Community Visitors Scheme
The Community Visitors Scheme continued to
grow in demand with 88 successful matches
recorded by the end of 2007. These matches
were provided by 65 active volunteers of the
program. Although the focus of the program is
on the provision of companionship to the
residents of aged care facilities the Coordinators
focused also on training and supporting
volunteers by providing information and

2007 has seen consistency in the quality of the language programs, cultural events, training and
services offered by Co.As.It.'s Education department. Major highlights include the continuing success
of the language courses offered throughout the state, the Let's Talk Italy projects, Heritage events and
teacher professional development programs.

Teaching Activity
In an ever more crowded NSW curriculum where
all languages are vying for space, Co.As.It. Italian
courses have continued to deliver successful
language programs. The primary school sector is
yet again the strongest area in Co.As.It.
Education with approximately 18,000 children
learning Italian and a demand from parents as
well as school principals requesting additional
courses in a number of schools. In the Co.As.It.
Insertion schools program, there were a total of
717 courses (411 in state schools, 297 in
catholic schools and 9 in independent schools).
New schools to the program were Annandale
North, Glenwood, Balmain and Leichhardt Public
Schools.
The Out of School Hours (OSH) program has
continued to offer language classes for the
primary to secondary sector. Classes held this
year reached a total of 52 with 807 enrolments.
Requests from schools with a low Italian
demographic for example, Paddington and
Miranda, demonstrate keen interest in OSH
courses indicating a new shift from traditional
maintenance language learning.
The Minister's Award for Excellence in
Community Languages for her outstanding
results in the Professional Development
Certificate went to Laura Del Ben, Co.As.It.’s Out
of Hours Coordinator.

Private lessons have continued to prove a
practical and more personalised alternative for
individual learning needs not only for the general
public but also for the corporate sector.
Co.As.It.'s Italian for Business courses have
been promoted generating new interest. In
collaboration with Co.As.It. Community Services
and Scalabrini Village, an Italian Language and
society course was created for carers and staff
tending to the needs of the Scalabrini clientele.
The course was successful and ran for 11 weeks
covering the language of day-to-day
communication necessary to allow staff and
residents to interact effectively.
The Let's Talk Italy cultural evenings carried on
into their second year with a series of events
ranging from Carnevale to Italian cinema to Italian
cuisine. The highlight for the year was the final
event that took place in October coinciding with
the 'Settimana della lingua italiana nel mondo'
and the Sydney Morning Herald's Good Food
Month. The theme “il mare” allowed Italian chef
Danny Russo to prepare dinner at Doltone house
that gave guests a gastronomic tour of Italian
seafood.
Adult Class enrolments were successful in 2007
with 60% of students re-enrolling from term to
term. A new online enrolment facility in place by
the end of the year assisted the enrolment

Professional Development
Italian Multimedia Resource Centre
A number of teacher training sessions were held for
Co.As.It. teachers in 2007 with the aim to continue to
provide high quality support and on-going training for its
teaching body. This year's highlights included three teachers
graduating in a Master in Italian Language and Culture at
the Università di Ca' Foscari, Venice. One of the graduates,
Dott.ssa Anna Formosa, held an inservice based on Unità
Didattica for Italian language teaching.
The Multimedia Resource Centre's involvement with the
Italian language teaching community continues to progress
and this was made evident both by the increase in school
visits to the Centre as well as the increase in membership.
To reflect the commitment to its public, 6 new computers
were purchased for teachers and borrowers.
Another highlight in the teacher development calendar was
in November where all NSW teachers were again invited to
attend a two-day Italian Language Teacher Training seminar,
funded by the Italian Ministero degli Affari Esteri and
conducted by Prof.ssa Antonella Dominici from the
Università di Perugia.
Co.As.It. Sessions this year have also seen the involvement
of the Italian Language Consultant at the NSW Department
of Education on a number of occasions. Inservices were
mostly conducted in the Casa d'Italia premises in Leichhardt
or at the Department of Education in Ryde.
Heritage
The number of Walking tours has increased twofold to 136
(100 in Leichhardt and 36 in the CBD) in the last year
proving these to be a very popular event for tourists as well
as school groups. Two Heritage photographic exhibitions
travelled around the State: “From the Backblocks to the
Frontlines” continued its run of success travelling to a
number of venues including Bulli during the Illawarra Folk
Festival; the Fraternity Club during Wollongong's Italian
Week, and then to the Leichhardt Municipal Library.
The Let's Live Heritage photographic exhibition also made
its mark in Norton Plaza in Leichhardt, the Marrickville Town
Hall, as well as a permanent exhibition in the Belli bar on
Norton Street in Leichhardt. These photographic exhibitions
were enjoyed by a great number of people and successfully
depicted life in early Sydney experienced by the Italian
Migrant population from the early 1900's to the late 1960's.
One of the highlights of the year was the screenings of the
black and white 1924 documentary Dall'Italia all'Australia.
The event was organised in collaboration with the Istituto
Italiano di Cultura and over 1000 people attended the
screenings. The launch, attended by over 200 people, was
held at the National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour.
The three screenings left the audiences emotionally charged
not only because of this unique film about Australian
immigration but also because of the wonderful live melodies
of the Illawarra Folk Club led by Aria Award winning
singer/songwriter Kavisha Mazzella.

Italian Bilingual School
In a year filled with success, we were delivered a
significant moment in IBS history with the signing
of the lease by the NSW Department of Lands
for part of the Yasmar property in Haberfield,
where we plan to build our new school. We
thank our parents and wider community for the
support they gave in compiling signatures,
pamphlet delivery and enthusiastically spreading
the word about our Yasmar submission.
Parents and friends were invited to a Science
Day in July with the aim of developing student
communication skills and promoting the love of
scientific endeavour and enquiry. Research topics
undertaken by students in all grades were
presented to peers and parents in written form in
both English and Italian.
The forming of a partnership with Rosebank
College was another highlight of 2007. This
educational alliance, which recognises the unique
character of each school, aims to provide
opportunities for the enrichment and promotion
of cultural aspects of learning, the integration of
language skills and the promotion of Italian
culture and heritage. It will expand opportunities
for language and cultural exchange and provide
teachers of both schools the opportunity to work
collaboratively in curriculum and co-curricular
areas, commit time and resources to consolidate
the language programs of both schools and
encourage staff of both schools to seek
opportunities for the enhancement of teaching
and learning through professional development
and exchange visits.
In 2007 the students elected their first school
captains, Emma McCarthy and Marco Calabro'.
The captains' role will be to run school
assemblies, introduce and thank guests of the
school from the wider community and represent
the school at special events.
Students
Students totalled 93 with 60 students in
Kindergarten to Year 4 and 33 students in Preps
(4 years old) . A total 23% of students was from
non-Italian background in 2007.
Staff
A total of 8 teaching staff (seven of whom were
retained from 2006) and a teacher Coordinator
continued to provide quality learning experiences
for all students in its care whilst striving for
excellence through bilingualism.
Student achievement
2007 was the first year that IBS students sat for
the standardised reading, spelling, writing and
mathematics tests known as the Basic Skills
Tests in Literacy and Numeracy.
44% of Year 3 students gained the highest
possible band ranking (Band 5) in literacy with
88% ranked in the two highest bands.
78% of Year 3 students were in the top two
bands in numeracy compared to 46% of the
state.

Leadership
Sport
Children from Year 3 and Year 4 were given the
opportunity to participate in the All Suburbs
Independent Schools Sporting Association
(ASISSA) in Cross Country and Athletics while
five students represented IBS in the ASISSA
Athletics carnival for which they were selected in
trials.
Year 1 - Year 4 students successfully participated
in the first IBS swimming carnival held at Ryde
Aquatic Centre in November while all students
were invited to take part in the IBS Sports
Carnival with wonderful parental support both on
the field and in the kitchen.
Italian Bilingual School
Creative Arts
Students have performed in various community
events such as the Norton St Festa, Festa della
Repubblica and the Consul General's Christmas
concert at the Conservatorium of Music.
In September students celebrated National
Poetry week by reciting poems in both
languages. Drama classes were taught by Nina
Barca whose lessons culminated in a dramatic
performance of the Italian story “Melina' involving
all students from Preps to Year 4 at the
Presentation Evening in December. Music tuition,
including violin and saxophone as well as
movement classes were provided through private
lessons before school.
Key evaluations
In Term 4 a survey on 'School culture' was
issued to seventy families, staff and students in
Years 2, 3 and 4, the purpose of which was to
identify the current school climate and to use it
as a reference point for future study. 99% of the
respondents indicated that they were proud of
the school and supportive of the school program
providing valuable and constructive feedback for
the school.
Management Plan
The new IBS bilingual website was proudly
launched in November as a result of a
considerable team effort. A new feature includes
a secure parent login to improve communication
by IBS to the school community.
A Values Forum was presented to 15 parents
and staff by Sue Roffey who discussed
Relationships, Rights, Resilience and
Responsibilities in the context of home and
school.
Virtues studies were taught with the aim of
creating an environment of respect, integrity, and
excellence in schools that can be transferred into
the wider community.
On a daily basis we are highly appreciative of the
canteen volunteers, especially Elise Robinson
and Silvana Dolfo, the canteen manager who
throughout the year ensured the children

Excursions
Visits to the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition and
SBS radio were highlights of a busy excursion
calendar together with the school's first visit to
Point Wollstoncraft residential camp in October,
which was a wonderful learning experience for
our Year 3 and Year 4 students.
IBS staff devised a management plan for the
next two years. In developing the plan the
outcomes of the survey on the 'School Culture'
were considered with the aim of addressing
feedback provided through the survey.
One of the more strategic outcomes was the
scope of how students develop knowledge
about, and skills for, using language in both
English and Italian. The focus will include talking,
listening, reading and writing skills.
Community
2007 saw the purchase of twenty computers and
monitors thanks to $10,000 raised by the P&F
and a donation of $5,000 by the Principe family.
The balance of the funds was allocated from a
$70,000 grant received from the Australian
Government under the Investing in Our Schools
Project which also assisted the school in
purchasing software, musical resources, Italian
and English resources, a new photocopier,
school furniture and sport equipment.

A Rapporto Annuale
Messaggio del Presidente
Carissimi soci e amici,
É per me un immenso piacere presentarvi il Rapporto
annuale del Co.As.It per il 2007, che é anche
un’ottima occasione per ricordare una vasta serie di
successi e obiettivi raggiunti .
Anche quest’anno il Consiglio Direttivo
dell’Associazione ha avuto una funzione di guida per
un gruppo dirigente estremamente competente,
verso una progressiva espansione dei servizi offerti,
in accordo col nostro Piano d’azione strategico.
L’immagine del Co.As.It. é perciò cresciuta all’interno
della comunità, grazie al continuo sforzo
promozionale e di collaborazione con i mezzi
d’infomazione locali, italiani e con gli enti
committenti.
Permettetemi perciò di condividere orgogliosamente
con voi solo alcuni dei risultati che il nostro
entusiasta gruppo di lavoro al Co.As.It. ha ottenuto
quest’anno, nel campo dei servizi sociali, del settore
educativo e della Scuola Italiana Bilingue:
• Grazie all’organizzazione del Ballo nazionale Italiano
abbiamo raccolto fondi sufficienti per aprire un
Centro di assistanza diurna demenza-specifico nella
zona ovest di Sydney. Inoltre sono orgoglioso di
annunciare che i nostri sforzi e i fondi raccolti hanno
spronato il Governo statale del NSW a finanziare tale
centro su base permanente.
• Un nuovo servizio, chiamato Assistenza domiciliare
privata (Home Help in inglese) é stato inaugurato nel
2007. Questo nuovo servizio offre assistenza
domestica a livello privato e aiuterà a ridurre i
crescenti tempi di attesa di quei servizi che ricevono
invece un contributo governativo.
• La firma del contratto di affitto per un periodo di
20 anni con il NSW Department of Lands per la
Scuola Italiana Bilingue per il terreno governativo
situato presso Yasmar a Haberfield
• L’assegnazione da parte del Goveno federale di
una sovvenzione di $500.000 per la imminente
edificazione della nuova Scuola Italiana Bilingue .
• L’assegnazione al Co.As.It. del “Premio speciale
per l’eccezionale contributo all’assistenza e
l’educazione linguistica della comunità italiana in
NSW dal 1968”, da parte della Camera di
Commercio e Industria Italiana di Sydney.
• La donazione da parte della Fondazione
Cassamarca di 250.000 euro come contributo per la
costruzione della nuova Scuola Italiana Bilingue.
L’organizzazione ad arte di una serata gastronomica
e musicale, “Let’s talk Italy”, organizzata presso la
Doltone House, cui ha partecipato il celebre cuoco
Danny Russo.
Il Co.As.It. non sta diventando più giovane! Ma vi
posso assicurare che il nostro espertissimo Comitato
Direttivo è sostenuto ed aiutato nel suo compito da
dirigenti e operatori estremamente appassionati e
attivi, tutti egualmente impegnati nello sforzo di fare
di noi una organizzazione piena di vita e immersa
nella realtà del presente. Siamo un’organizzazione
che pensa in positivo nell’affrontare il futuro e
nell’affrontare le sfide quotidiane che la nostra
clientela e la nostra comunità ci pone davanti.
I nostri successi non sarebbero stati possibili senza
l’aiuto di tante persone, altrettanto impegnate e
appassionate. Benché praticamente impossibile
citare ognuno, la nostra più profonda riconoscenza va
ai Ministri Kristina Keneally, Tony Kelly e Verity Firth,
alla signora Angela D’Amore, alla senatrice Concetta
Fierravanti-Wells, al Console Generale d’Italia, il
Dottor Benedetto Latteri e al suo gruppo di lavoro, al
Cavaliere Pino Musso e tutti gli altri membri del
Com.It.Es., ai mezzi d’informazione in lingua italiana
ed in particolare al signor Armando Tornari (La
Fiamma) al signor Marco Lucchi (SBS), al Comune di
Leichhardt, alla Camera di Commercio di Leichhardt
e alla Camera di Commercio e Industria Italiana di
Sydney.
Concludiamo il 2007 annunciando un anno di
celebrazioni. Nel 2008 è infatti nostra intenzione
festeggiare il quarantesimo compleanno del Co.As.It.
con una serie di importantissime iniziative ed eventi!
Tra questi va citato un pranzo ufficiale di
celebrazione dell’anniversario durante il quale
ringrazieremo pubblicamente tutti coloro che, su
base puramente volontaria, hanno dedicato il loro
tempo, ed in alcuni casi le loro vite, alla comunità,
attraverso il Co.As.It.
Come organizzazione abbiamo dovuto evolverci e
cambiare le nostre modalità di gestione e il modo di
fornire servizi, adattando entrambi ai bisogni sempre
mutevoli della comunità. Vorrei perciò cogliere
l’opportunità per ringraziare e riconoscere il
contributo di tutti i nostri sottocomitati e consigli
direttivi-presenti e futuri, cui va tutta la mia
gratitudine.
Infine un personale ringraziamento, assieme a quello
di tutto il Consiglio Direttivo, va al personale, sempre
più numeroso, del Co.As.It. Persone che dedicano il
loro tempo e le loro capacità al raggiungimento della
missione che il Co.As.It. si é dato.

Rapporto del Direttore Esecutivo
Carissimi soci e amici.
Il 2007 è stato un anno eccezionale per il Co.As.It.,
estremamente impegnativo ma anche pieno di
successi.
È per me un onore lavorare con un Consiglio Direttivo
estremamente impegnato e sempre pronto all’aiuto e
al consiglio, oltre che con un numero sempre
crescente di professionisti in vari campi. Tutti questi
elementi fanno del mio ruolo di direttore esecutivo un
qualcosa di estremamente soddisfacente e, come
dire, quasi una missione di cui non si può fare a
meno!
Il Settore servizi sociali viene gestito ormai da tempo
in maniera impeccabile da Thomas Camporeale che
ha mantenuto alto il tasso di qualità sia della
gestione del settore che dell’erogazione dei servizi di
assistenza. In particolare vorrei citare la messa in
atto di due nuove iniziative rivolte alla comunità.
Prima di tutto la riorganizzazione del servizio di centri
di assistenza diurna (effettiva a partire dal gennaio
2008), riorganizzazione che migliorerà l’efficienza e
l’efficacia di questo servizio che sarà così ancor più
capace di rispondere ai bisogni presenti e futuri della
comunità. In secondo luogo vorrei citare il nuovo
servizio di Assistenza Domiciliare Privata (Home Help
Service). È questo un nuovo ed entusiasmante
programma di assistenza che, ne siamo certi, sarà
ben ricevuto dalla comunità. Potrete trovare ulteriori
informazioni su tante altre iniziative, novità e progetti
fatti in collaborazione con altri enti all’interno di
questo rapporto.
Infine è doveroso ringraziare l’Onorevole Ministro
Cristina Keneally per aver scelto di annunciare
l’iniziativa “Terza età 2030” (una nuova iniziativa di
pianificazione e implementazione di servizi per gli
anziani del NSW) dalla sede centrale del Co.As.It.,
chiaro riconoscimento dell’importanza della nostra
organizzazione nel settore dei servizi per la terza età.
La Scuola italiana bilingue, gestita dalla nuova
Preside Glenda Fegent, ha continuato a crescere e,
grazie all’efficace ed efficiente stile lavorativo di
Glenda, nuovo personale è stato impiegato e nuovi
programmi per studenti e famiglie sono stati
introdotti; programmi quali campeggi, partecipazione
degli studenti ad attività sportive interscolastiche, a
competizioni musicali, ecc. Inoltre l’ambiente
amichevole e inclusivo della scuola, fanno dell’IBS un
contesto pedagogico unico per i bambini.
Per quel che riguarda il Settore educativo quest’anno
abbiamo salutato con dispiacere Lina Di Donato, la
responsabile di questo settore per cinque anni. Vorrei
ringraziare Lina per la sua ineguagliata dedizione al
lavoro e all’obiettivo di migliorare l’efficacia e la
qualità di tutti i programmi condotti dal Settore
educativo, compreso il sempre innovativo e popolare
programma di preservazione e scoperta del
patrimonio culturale. Il nuovo responsabile del Settore
educativo, Alessandro di Prinzio, ha già dimostrato
grande dedizione a questo ruolo, coinvolgendosi non
solo nella gestione quotidiana del settore ma anche
facendo un lavoro di promozione presso vari enti,
organizzazioni e individui della necessità di
mantenere vivo questo importante settore.
Alessandro ha già creato una rete di contatti utili i
quali risulteranno essere di vitale importanza non
solo per il Settore educativo ma anche per il
successo dell’insegnamento dell’italiano nel NSW.
Nel 2007 abbiamo inaugurato due nuovi ed utili siti
web per il Co.As.It. e l’IBS, siti che hanno ricevuto
un’accoglienza molto positiva. In rete è ora possibile
trovare informazioni sui servizi svolti dal Co.As.It.,
scaricare informazioni utili, acquistare i prodotti del
Co.As.It. oltre che iscriversi ai corsi di italiano e
pagare per quei servizi che sono offerti a pagamento.
Inoltre è stata sviluppata una sezione del sito che è
ad uso esclusivo del personale con possibilità di
accedere a regolamenti, moduli e altri tipi di
materiale e informazione. Nel corso del 2008
saranno inoltre migliorati gli elementi bilingui del sito
del Co.As.It.
Per quel riguarda l’aspetto risorse umane,
continueremo a dare estrema importanza alla
gestione delle prestazioni lavorative del personale da
noi impiegato e alla sua formazione professionale e
personale attraverso una valutazione attenta del
lavoro svolto, sviluppando la dimensione del lavoro di
gruppo e fornendo opportunità di formazione
continua.
Guardo con entusiasmo a un altro anno di lavoro
produttivo e innovativo nel 2008.

Servizi Sociali
Il 2007 è stato un anno ricco di attività per il Settore
servizi sociali. Se il gruppo di lavoro ha lavorato
senza sosta in aree precedentemente identificate
come priorità, ci si è anche concentrati
sull’espandere la varietà di servizi a disposizione
della comunità italo-australiana, su nuovi progetti e
sullo sviluppo di nuovi rapporti di collaborazione.
Il personale impiegato nel Settore servizi sociali
include assistenti sociali, psicologi, coordinatori di
servizi e addetti all’assistenza. Il gruppo di lavoro,
che conta 75 persone, ha diverse professionalità al
suo interno allo scopo di rispondere ai bisogni
estremamente personalizzati presenti nella comunità
italo-australiana. Tuttavia un ruolo significativo viene
svolto anche dai 70 volontari che operano nei centri
diurni per anziani e nel programma Visitatori
Comunitari. Permetteteci di cogliere questa
opportunità per ringraziare questi volontari e
riconoscerne lo sforzo e la dedizione, oltre che
riconoscere quello del personale.
Pacchetti di Assistenza Domiciliare (CACP)
Il 2007 ha visto crescere la domanda per questo
servizio. Allo scopo di ridurre i tempi di attesa per
poter usufruire di questo servizio il Co.As.It. ha
continuato la sua opera di richiesta di ulteriori
pacchetti a livello locale. Con l’approssimarsi del
Processo di approvazione per l’erogazione di servizi
per la terza età nel 2007 (Aged Care Approvals
Round in inglese-ACAR) il Co.As.It. ha cercato il
sostegno dei parlamentari locali e della comunità
italo-australiana in generale, allo scopo di aumentare
i fondi destinati ai servizi per anziani per la comunità
italiana. L’esito finale di tale processo di approvazione
è stata la distribuzione di venti pacchetti aggiuntivi,
che ha portato il numero di pacchetti di assistenza
domiciliare gestiti a 200. L’aumentato numero di
pacchetti disponibili ha sicuramente ridotto le liste di
attesa per accedere al servizio nella parte finale del
2007, ma non ha permesso di rispondere a pieno
alla crescente domanda per questo tipo di servizio.
Al Co.As.It. abbiamo anche compreso la necessità di
aumentare il supporto fornito al gruppo di lavoro del
progetto CACP. Perciò, per assistere i coordinatori del
servizio è stata introdotta la nuova posizione di
Responsabile del servizio di CACP. Questa posizione
oltre ad occuparsi della supervisione giornaliera
dell’andamento del programma si occupa anche
della formazione e supervisione del personale.
Centri di Assistenza Diurna
Il programma dei centri di assistenza diurna è rivolto
sia agli anziani in condizioni di salute precaria che a
coloro che soffrono di demenza. Nel 2007 il Co.As.It.
ha volutamente scelto di aprire un nuovo centro per
anziani italiani nella zona metropolitana ovest di
Sydney. Tale decisione ci ha permesso non solo di
ridurre la lista di attesa per il programma nella zona
metropolitana ovest di Sydney ma anche di aprire un
nuovo servizio in questa zona. La crescente richiesta
di servizi di assistenza demenza-specifici è stata
chiaramente identificata come bisogno prioritario nel
Piano Strategico 2006-2009. Grazie al nostro sforzo
di raccolta fondi e alla generosa risposta a questo
sforzo da parte della comunità, il Co.As.It. è riuscito,
mediante l’organizzazione del Ballo Nazionale
Italiano, ad ottenere fondi sufficienti per il
mantenimento del centro di assisitenza diurna per
almeno 12 mesi. Il centro è stato aperto nel luglio del
2007 ed ha raggiunto la sua massima capacità di
accoglienza in sole quattro settimane. Una volta
raggiunto l’obiettivo di aprire il centro, gli sforzi si
sono poi concentrati sulla ricerca di fondi alternativi
per tenerlo aperto oltre l’anno. Verso la fine del 2007
al Co.As.It. è stato notificato che il Servizio di
assistenza domiciliare localizzata (Home and
Community care Program-HACC), gestito dal
Ministero per la terza età, i disabili e l’assistenza
domiciliare (Department of Ageing, Disability and
Home Care) intendeva finanziare il centro a partire
dal gennaio del 2008. E questo un risultato di cui
siamo molto orgogliosi.
Il 2007 ha anche visto l’avviarsi di una
ristrutturazione organizzativa del programma
ristrutturazione che mirava a fornire maggior

sostegno agli operatori del servizio e a uniformare le
pratiche di lavoro in tutti i centri. La struttura
organizzativa é stata modificata per far spazio ad un
coordinatore del servizio, a due responsabili dei
centri diurni a tempo pieno e ad un gruppo di
assistenti e autisti. Tali cambiamenti hanno permesso
al Co.As.It. di meglio concentrarsi sui bisogni dei
clienti del servizio, garantendo allo stesso tempo una
crescita del programma. In coerenza con il Piano
strategico dell’organizzazione, il Servizio dei centri di
assistenza diurna verrà ampliato nell’immediato
futuro: in quanto questo e un servizio non solo
essenziale ma anche estremamente utile per il
numero crescente di anziani italiani che si trovano in
condizioni di salute precarie o addirittura costretti in
casa.
Nel 2007 il Co.As.It. ha condotto una ricerca sul
livello di soddisfazione dei clienti del Servizio. Tale
ricerca é stata condotta da personale esterno al
programma. La conseguente relazione stilata ha
evidenziato che il Co.As.It fornisce ai suoi clienti un
servizio di grande qualità. Inoltre il rapporto ha
evidenziato come il 100% dei clienti dichiarino la loro
soddisfazione per il servizio ricevuto e il 99% siano
soddisfatti dell’aiuto e supporto ricevuto dagli
operatori. Una copia di questa relazione può essere

Anche il numero delle attività svolte nei centri diurni
è aumentato nel 2007, includendo gite a
Wollongong, uscite in zone locali (mercato del pesce,
Star City), giornate di preparazione dolci, manuali
ecc. piccoli Parori.
Servizio salute mentale
Il Servizio salute mentale del Co.As.It. ha continuato
a focalizzarsi sul fornire consulenze psicologiche
individuali a chi ha problemi psicologici, ai loro
familiari e a coloro che si prendono cura di chi ha
problemi psicologici. Il servizio ha visto un aumento
del 14% delle segnalazioni di nuovi casi nel 2007,
specialmente dalla zona metropolitana ovest di
Sydney. Nonostante questo, il servizio è riuscito a
gestire i tempi di attesa, contenendoli ad un
massimo di quattro settimane, con eccezioni fatte
per quei casi particolarmente urgenti.
Campagne informative e collaborazioni con enti e
professionisti esterni al Co.As.It sono stati organizzati
durante tutto il 2007. Tra i risultati e le attività di
rilievo del servizio vanno citate:
• La presentazione di un poster dal titolo “Uno studio
psicodinamico della prevalenza e caratteristiche
peculiari dei disturbi mentali in un gruppo di Italoaustraliani sottoposti a consulenza psicologica”.
Questo poster è stato presentato alla conferenza
“Count me in”, una conferenza organizzata
specificatamente per organizzazioni non governative
che aveva come tema la salute mentale. La
conferenza è stata organizzata a Sydney.
• Seminario organizzato dal Cancer Council.
Presentazione su: “Emozioni e malattia, un approccio
olistico al problema cancro”
• Relazione su “I disturbi mentali” per il South-East
Neighbourhood Centre
• Relazione su “Stress e depressione” per
l’Associazione medica dell’area di Canterbury, Servizi
Multiculturali per i disabili.
• Relazione su “Lutto e rielaborazione nella comunità
italiana” presso il Calvary Hospital
• La presentazione di un poster dal titolo “Uno studio
psicodinamico della prevalenza e caratteristiche
peculiari dei disturbi mentali in un gruppo di Italoaustraliani sottoposti a consulenza psicologica.
Questo poster é stato presentato alla conferenza
TheMHS 2007, svoltasi a Melbourne
• Relazione su “Elaborazione del lutto tra gli italoaustraliani”, svolta presso la Casa di riposo S’Antonio
a Ryde, per i Servizi Sociali della zona di Ryde e il
Gladesville Community Aid.
• Svolgimento nell’occasione della Settimana per la
salute mentale (Mental Health Week) di due seminari
di mezza giornata presso il Club Marconi e il Co.As.It.
a Leichhardt. Il tema trattato era “Le relazioni
personali nella comunità italiana” e nello svolgere il
dibattito ci si é affidati all’esperienza degli psicologi
del Co.As.It., così come a quella dell’operatore per i
giovani e quello per le dipendenze. Ai due eventi ha
partecipato un totale di 150 persone.
Servizio tossicodipendenze
Nel corso del 2007 il servizio è stato molto
impegnato nel coadiuvare lo sviluppo e
l’implementazione di campagne antifumo nello stato
del NSW e nel disseminare informazioni presso la
comunità italiana sui danni alla salute causati dal
fumo. In collaborazione con la Linea antifumo del
NSW (NSW Quitline) e il Servizio campagne educative
multiculturali (Multicultural Health Comunication
Service) è stata istituita una linea telefonica di
consulenza in lingua italiana per chi desidera
smettere di fumare. Questo servizio, appaltato al
Co.As.It. è stato inaugurato in agosto alla presenza
del Ministro per la ricerca sul cancro, l’Onorevole
Verity Firth.
Tale servizio è di importanza vitale, poiché permette a
chi chiama di poter parlare con qualcuno in italiano
senza dover coinvolgere un interprete.
In collaborazione con l’assistente sociale per i
giovani, l’operatore per le tossicodipendenze ha
svolto una serie di attività educative presso le scuole
superiori dal titolo “A proposito di droghe: fatti e
miti”. Questo progetto ha visto il coinvolgimento di
quattro scuole superiori con presentazioni in lingua
italiana, con discussioni incentrate anche sulle
dimensioni culturali nell’uso e abuso di droghe.
Programma per i giovani e le famiglie
L’Assistente sociale per i giovani ha organizzato “Viva
Leichhardt!-Festival dei cortometraggi” in giugno.
Inserito nel programma del Sydney Italian Festival,
l’evento ha visto l’entusiastica partecipazione di ben
300 persone. Sono stati presentati ben dodici
cortometraggi il vincitore è stato il cortometraggio
intitolato “Il massacro di Horsley Park” (Horsey Park
massacre) di Linda Mirabilio.
Obiettivo di questo progetto è quello di rafforzare lo
spirito di unità della comunità italo-australiana e di
sviluppare la creatività dei giovani della comunità.
Un altro punto centrale del progetto giovani è stato il
lavorare assieme ai mezzi di informazione nel
generare dibattito su varie tematiche legate
all’universo giovanile. A questo scopo l’operatore ha
partecipato a interviste radiofoniche su temi come il
bullismo, le nuove tecnologie, il suicidio giovanile, il
bere eccessivo e la Settimana degli studenti
(Schoolies Week).
Programma operatori di rete
Gli operatori di questo programma hanno continuato
a concentrare le loro energie sulla produzione di
materiale informativo per gli anziani sui servizi
disponibili. Allo scopo è stato prodotto un libretto
informativo intitolato “Elenco Servizi” che fornisce
spiegazioni base sulle diverse tipologie di servizi con
un elenco di quelli disponibili nella zona di Sydney. Il
libretto è stato presentato ufficialmente al pubblico in
luglio, per poi essere presentato a numerosi gruppi
anziani.
Strette collaborazioni con organizzazioni di vario tipo
che lavorano con gli anziani sono state stabilite o
mantenute nel corso dell’anno. La collaborazione con
il Gruppo Amity è stata ulteriormente consolidata,
fornendo ulteriore assistenza all’organizzazione nel
rispondere ai bisogni e desideri dei suoi residenti di
origine italiana. Inoltre gli operatori del programma
hanno continuato a fornire consulenza e consiglio
agli operatori di varie strutture residenziali per
anziani, fornendo consigli pratici su come meglio
assistere persone di origine italiana.
Assistente sociale per gli anziani
La Settimana degli anziani ha visto l’organizzazione
di due appuntamenti, uno alla Conca d’oro e uno
presso la Villa Rosa a Leichhardt. Questi
appuntamenti, ormai una tradizione del Co.As.It. (e
che consistono di pranzo, musica, danze e tanto
divertimento) hanno la funzione di riconoscere
pubblicamente il valore e il fantastico contributo degli
anziani alla vita sociale e familiare. I due
appuntamenti hanno visto la partecipazione di ben
600 persone, con la presenza del Console Generale
dottor Benedetto Latteri e di vari Consiglieri comunali
come ospiti d’onore.
L’assistente sociale per gli anziani ha poi continuato
a svolgere seminari basati sul programma “Attenti
alla testa” (Mind your mind”) agli anziani che
partecipano ai gruppi sociali del Co.As.It. Questo
programma, sviluppato dall’Associazione Alzheimer,
tratta tematiche come l’invecchiare preservando la
salute e le capacità cerebrali ed ha come obiettivo
quello di prevenire il sopraggiungere dell’Alzheimer e
della demenza in età avanzata.
Programma visitatori comunitari
Le richieste per questo programma sono continuate
a crescere con 88 “coppie di amici” registrate alla
fine del 2007. In pratica questo ha significato
associare 65 volontari con 88 anziani. Benché il
programma si focalizzi sul fornire volontari che
offrano compagnia e conforto agli anziani che
risiedono in case di riposo, i coordinatori del servizio
svolgono anche un ruolo di supporto e formazione
dei volontari, organizzando momenti formativi ed
informativi su tematiche quali: il ruolo degli
ergoterapeuti nell’assistenza agli anziani, la
demenza, la consapevolezza ecologica, depressione e
disturbi d’ansia.

Il servizio di assistenza domiciliare privato fornisce un
livello di assistenza non intensivo che ha come
obiettivo il favorire l’indipendenza e l’autonomia della
clientela. Il servizio è inclusivo di assistenza alla
persona, pulizia, spese domestiche, ma può anche
fornire attività aggiuntive come giardinaggio (taglio
dell’erba compreso) e l’organizzazione di servizi
sanitari non medici come podologo o fisioterapista.
Oltre all’attivazione di questo nuovo servizio, il
Co.As.It. fornisce i propri operatori specializzati e di
lingua italiana ad organizzazioni con strutture simili
che desiderano accedere a personale bilingue.
Servizio assistenza domestica privato
Nel 2007 il Co.As.It. ha inaugurato il Servizio
assistenza domestica privato. Tale servizio, prevede
l’erogazione di servizi altamente personalizzati di alta
qualità e nasce come una risposta ai crescenti
bisogni degli anziani italo-australiani di un’assistenza

Attività d’insegnamento
In un contesto di competizione tra le varie lingue per
uno spazio nel programma scolastico del NSW i corsi
di italiano del Co.As.It. hanno continuato a fornire
programmi di insegnamento di successo.
L’educazione primaria si è rivelata ancora una volta
l’area principale di attività per il settore
insegnamento del Co.As.It. con circa 18.000 studenti
iscritti ai corsi di italiano e richieste sia da parte dei
genitori che dei presidi per l’attivazione di ulteriori
corsi in varie scuole. Il programma scolastico del
Co.As.It. ha all’attivo ben 717 corsi, di cui 411 in
scuole pubbliche, 297 in scuole private cattoliche e 9
in altre tipologie di scuole. Inoltre nuove scuole si
sono aggiunte al programma: la scuola pubblica di
Annandale North, quelle di Glenwood, Balmain e
Leichhardt.
Il programma di dopo scuola ha continuato ad offrire
corsi di italiano alle scuole elementari e medie. Il
numero totale di classi svolte quest’anno è stato di
52, con un totale di 807 studenti iscritti. L’interesse
per questo programma da parte di scuole con un
basso numero di studenti italiani, come nelle zone di
Miranda e Paddington, dimostra che si è di fronte ad
un cambiamento della tradizionale struttura
d’insegnamento di questo programma, fino a pochi
anni fa incentrata invece sul mantenimento della
lingua per studenti di origine italiana.
Il premio del Ministro dell’Istruzione del NSW per
“Risultati d’eccellenza nel settore dell’insegnamento
linguistico” (Excellence in Community Languages) è
andato alla coordinatrice del programma del dopo
scuola, Laura del Ben.
Le iscrizioni alle classi per adulti hanno continuato
con successo nel 2007 con il 60% degli studenti
pronti a riscriversi ai corsi di livello superiore. Tale
iscrizione è sta resa più semplice dalla possibilità di
iscriversi online, possibilità attivata alla fine dell’anno.
Grazie a questo nuovo servizio i potenziali studenti
possono anche completare un modulo di valutazione
online, prima di scegliere il corso al livello di
competenza adatto.
Le lezioni private di italiano si sono rivelate
un’alternativa più pratica e personalizzata per i
bisogni di apprendimento di alcuni utenti, questo non
solo per quel che riguarda l’insegnamento ad un
pubblico generico ma anche per l’insegnamento
dell’italiano commerciale. La promozione dei corsi di
italiano commerciale ha permesso al Co.As.It. di
raggiungere un’audience nuova. Inoltre in
collaborazione con il settore Servizi sociali e il
Villaggio Scalabrini è stato realizzato un corso di
lingua e cultura italiana per il personale di cura dei
Villaggi Scalabrini e per coloro che hanno compiti di
cura in generale. Il corso, della durata di 11
settimane, ha avuto un notevole successo, e si è
incentrato sul fornire al personale quel livello di
competenza linguistica necessario per poter
comunicare con i clienti.
Gli appuntamenti culturali Let’s talk Italy sono ormai
al secondo anno di vita e nel 2007 sono stati
organizzati vari eventi a tema, dal Carnevale, al
cinema italiano, alla gastronomia. Il momento
culminante di questo progetto culturale è stato
l’appuntamento finale di Ottobre, coincidente con la
Settimana della lingua italiana nel mondo e l’iniziativa
nota con il nome “Good Food Month”, organizzata dal
Sydney Morning Herald e dal tema “il mare”. Tema
questo che ha permesso al cuoco italiano Danny
Russo di creare un tour gastronomico delle pietanze
di pesce italiane tipiche per gli ospiti dell’evento alla
Doltone House.
Formazione professionale
In una prospettiva di formazione continua, vari
momenti di formazione e supporto alle attività
didattiche sono stati organizzati nel corso del 2007
per il corpo insegnanti dell’organizzazione. Tra i
successi che possono essere citati quest’anno c’è il
completamento di un master presso l’Università Ca’
Foscari di Venezia di tre insegnanti. Tra queste c’è
stata la dottoressa Anna Formosa che ha poi svolto
un seminario interno sulla programmazione di una
unità didattica per l’insegnamento dell’italiano.
Un altro momento significativo del programma di
formazione professionale per insegnanti si è avuto in
novembre, quando tutti gli insegnanti di italiano del
NSW sono stati invitati a partecipare a un seminario
di studio di due giorni sull’insegnamento della lingua
italiana, condotto dalla Professoressa Antonella
Dominaci dell’Università di Perugia.
I corsi di aggiornamento del Co.As.It. hanno visto
quest’anno il coinvolgimento del Consulente per la
lingua italiana presso il Ministero dell’Istruzione in
varie occasioni. I seminari interni si sono svolti
prevalentemente presso la Casa d’Italia di Leichhardt
o presso la sede del Ministero a Ryde.
Centro risorse multimediale italiano
Il centro è sempre più attivo nel fornire supporto e
sostegno didattico agli insegnati di lingua italiana,
come testimoniato dal crescente numero di visite da
parte di gruppi scolastici e la crescita del numero di
soci del centro. Come dimostrazione tangibile del
livello di impegno del centro nei confronti dei suoi
soci e visitatori, sono stati acquistati sei nuovi
computer.
Patrimonio culturale
Il numero di “Passeggiate storico-culturali”
organizzate nel 2007 è raddoppiato rispetto all’anno
precedente: 100 nella zona di Leichhardt e 36 nel
centro di Sydney. Ciò a prova del successo di questa
iniziativa sia tra i turisti che nelle scuole. Inoltre due
mostre fotografiche itineranti sono state organizzate
in varie zone del NSW: la mostra intitolata From the
Balckblocks to the Frontline ha continuato a
riscuotere successo ed è stata allestita a Bulli,
durante l’Illawarra Folk Festival, al Club Fraternity di
Wollongong durante la Settimana italiana e poi
presso la biblioteca di Leichhardt.
La mostra fotografica Let’s live heritage è stata

allestita al Norton Street Plaza e il Comune di
Marrickville ed è una installazione permanente
presso il Belli bar di Norton Street, a Leichhardt. Tali
mostre hanno attratto un pubblico molto numeroso
ed hanno offerto un’ottima prospettiva sulla vita degli
emigranti italiani a Sydney dai primi del 900 fino alla
fine degli anni sessanta.
Tra gli eventi particolarmente significativi dell’anno
c’è stata la proiezione del film in bianco e nero
“Dall’Italia all’Australia”. L’evento, frutto di una
collaborazione con L’Istituto di cultura, ha visto la
partecipazione di ben mille persone. La premiere del
film si è svolta presso il Museo Nazionale Marittimo a
Darling Horbour.
Le tre proiezioni di “Dall’Italia all’Australia” si sono
rivelate particolarmente emozionanti non solo per
l’originalità della pellicola ma anche per il bellissimo
sottofondo musicale dal vivo dell’Illawarra Folk Club
che ha accompagnato la cantante e cantautrice,
nonché vincitrice dell’Aria Award, Kavisha Mazzella.

Sviluppo delle capacità sociali e civili degli studenti
Nel 2007 gli studenti hanno eletto per la prima volta i
propri rappresentanti, Emma McCarthy e Marco
Calabrò. Il ruolo dei rappresentati degli studenti è
quello di gestire le assemblee scolastiche, accogliere
e ringraziare gli ospiti della scuola e rappresentare la
scuola in varie iniziative pubbliche.

Scuola Italiana Bilingue
In un anno già ricco di successi, la firma del
contratto di affitto di parte della proprietà chiamata
“Yasmar” (sulla cui area verrà edificata la nuova
scuola bilingue) è stato un momento tra più
significativi nella storia della Scuola italiana bilingue.
Un profondo ringraziamento va ai genitori e ai
membri della comunità italo-australiana, per l’aiuto e
il sostegno offerto nella raccolta firme, nella
distribuzione di materiale informativo e per
l’entusiastica pubblicizzazione della nostra richiesta
di poter affittare la proprietà “Yasmar”.
Un altro risultato significativo raggiunto nel 2007 è
stato lo stabilirsi di un rapporto di collaborazione con
il Rosebank College. Questa alleanza educativa, pur
nel riconoscimento della unicità delle due scuole,
mira a creare opportunità di promozione degli aspetti
culturali del processo di apprendimento e
all’arricchimento di tali aspetti e all’integrazione delle
capacità di apprendimento linguistico e di
promozione della cultura e del patrimonio culturale
italiani. Questa collaborazione inoltre aumenterà le
opportunità di scambi culturali tra le due scuole e
offrirà agli insegnanti di entrambe l’opportunità di
lavorare assieme in attività scolastiche ed extrascolastiche e di dedicare risorse e tempo al
rafforzamento dei programmi di insegnamento delle
lingue. Inoltre questa collaborazione mira anche ad
incoraggiare il personale insegnante di tutte e due le
scuole a migliorare ulteriormente le rispettive
capacità di insegnamento attraverso attività di
formazione e scambio.
Sport
I bambini e le bambine di terza e quarta elementare
hanno partecipato alle attività della Associazione
Sportiva Scuole Private (All Suburbs Independent
Schools Sporting Association-ASISSA) nella disciplina
della corsa campestre, mentre cinque studenti,
attraverso un processo di selezione, hanno
rappresentato la scuola al campionato di atletica
dell’associazione.
Gli studenti dalla prima fino alla quarta elementare
hanno partecipato con successo al primo
Campionato di nuoto della scuola che si è svolto
presso la piscina di Ryde in novembre e gli studenti
di tutte le classi sono stati invitati a partecipare al
Campionato Sportivo, cui hanno partecipato
entusiasticamente i genitori con abbondante tifo e
aiuto nella preparazione del pranzo.
Studenti
Nel 2007 il numero di studenti è stato di novanta in
totale, di cui 60 distribuiti tra la prima e la quinta
elementare e 33 nelle classi preparatorie. Il 23%
degli studenti non sono di background italiano.
Personale
Otto insegnanti e un coordinatore hanno continuato a
fornire una esperienza pedagogica di qualità agli
studenti, in un continuo sforzo diretto a raggiungere i
massimi risultati nel campo del bilinguismo.
I successi degli studenti
Il 2007 è stato il primo anno in cui gli studenti della
Scuola italiana bilingue hanno partecipato all’esame
chiamato Esame delle competenze base di lettura,
scrittura, dizione e abilità matematiche (Basic Skills
Basic Tests in Literacy and Numeracy)
Il 44% degli studenti di terza elementare ha
raggiunto il livello di abilità più alto possibile nei
settori lettura, scrittura e dizione (Livello 5), con
l’88% degli studenti ad occupare i due livelli più alti.
Il 78% degli studenti di terza elementare si sono
collocati nei due livelli più alti dell’esame per quel
che riguarda le capacità logico-matematiche, a fronte
di una media statale del 46%.
Sia i genitori che gli studenti sono stati invitati a
partecipare alla Giornata della scienza, che si è
tenuta in leuglio, giornata il cui scopo era
promuovere la passione per la ricerca e le scoperte
scientifiche e le capacità comunicative degli studenti.
Relazioni su varie esperienze di ricerca sono state
elaborate dagli studenti sia in inglese che in italiano

Arti
Gli studenti sono stati coinvolti in varie iniziative
come la Festa di Norton St., la Festa delle Repubblica
e il Concerto di Natale del Consolato presso il
conservatorio.
In settembre, per celebrare la Settimana della poesia,
gli studenti hanno recitato poesie in entrambe le
lingue.
Lezioni di recitazione sono state tenute da Nina
Barca e sono culminate in una recita serale in
dicembre della favola italiana “Melina”, al cui
allestimento hanno partecipato tutti gli studenti, dalla
prima fino alla quinta elementare.
Lezioni private di musica, sassofono e violino, come
pure classi di introduzione alla danza sono state
organizzate prima delle lezioni.
Sviluppo di un piano gestionale
Il personale del Co.As.It. ha sviluppato un piano
gestionale biennale. Nell’elaborazione di tale piano si
è tenuto conto dei risultati di un sondaggio sulla
“Cultura organizzativa della scuola”. Uno degli
obbiettivi strategici del piano è la comprensione di
come gli studenti sviluppino le capacità e le
conoscenze richieste per la produzione linguistica sia
Opere di utilità sociale e donazioni
Nel 2007 sono stati acquistati venti computer grazie
ai fondi raccolti dall’Associazione P&F (10000 dollari)
ed a una donazione di cinquemila dollari da parte
della famiglia Principe. Il resto dei soldi necessari per
l’acquisto sono provenuti da un fondo di 70.000
dollari ricevuto dal governo australiano come parte
del programma di finanziamento “Investire nelle
nostre scuole”, programma con cui sono stati
finanziati anche gli acquisti di software per i
computer, materiale per l’insegnamento della musica,
materiale vario sia in italiano che in inglese, una
fotocopiatrice, materiale per la scuola di vario tipo e
attrezzature sportive.
Grazie ad un impegno considerevole di tutto il gruppo
di lavoro della scuola, il sito bilingue della scuola è
stato inaugurato in novembre. Per migliorare le
comunicazioni tra genitori e scuola è stata creata
all’interno del sito un’area ad accesso riservato per i
soli genitori.
È stato anche organizzato un incontro-dibattito cui ha
partecipato il personale della scuola e quindici
genitori. L’incontro facilitato da Sue Roffey si è
incentrato sul tema “Relazioni, diritti, capacità di
recupero e responsabilità a scuola e a casa”.
Educazione civica e regole di comportamento sono
diventate materie di insegnamento, allo scopo di
creare a scuola un’atmosfera improntata ai valori di
reciproco rispetto, integrità morale e realizzazione
piena del proprio potenziale personale; atmosfera
che può poi venire trasferita nel contesto sociale più
ampio.
Vorremmo poi esprimere il nostro più profondo
apprezzamento per i volontari della mensa scolastica,
ed in particolare Elise Robinson e Silvana Dolfo,
responsabile della mensa che nel corso dell’anno si è
distinta per la qualità e per il valore nutritivo del
menù giornaliero.
Escursioni
Le gite alla mostra di Leonardo da Vinci e la visita
alla radio SBS sono state tra le iniziative più
significative in un calendario di escursioni molto fitto,
assieme alla gita scolastica a Point Wollstoncraft in
ottobre: una esperienza didattica molto significativa
per gli studenti di quarta e quinta elementare.

Co. As. It. Italian Association of Assistance has
over the past year continued its operations from
the premises of 67 Norton Street, Leichhardt
where all services and facilities have been
maintained by the organisation. During the year
the company continued the process of
establishing the Italian Bilingual School by
securing a lease from the NSW Department of
Land over portion of the Yasmar site in
Haberfield. Plans are currently being developed
to build a new school. Co As It Italian
Association of Assistance has continued their
focus on community services in the Greater
Western Sydney at their Harris Park office.

during the year included the provision of a
comprehensive range of linguistically and
culturally appropriate community services to the
Italian Australian Community. Also the teaching of
the Italian language at infant and primary level,
the promotion of the Italian Language and

Kindergarten to University level and the operation
of the Italian Bilingual School.

express an opinion on them to the members of the company.
My audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards to provide
reasonable assurance whether the financial reports are free of material misstatement. My procedures
included examination, on a test basis of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in
the financial report, the evaluation of accounting policies and significant accounting estimates. These
procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion whether, in all material respects, the financial
reports are presented fairly in accordance with Accounting Standards and other mandatory
professional reporting requirements and statutory requirements, so as to present a view that is
consistent with my understanding of the company's financial position, the results of its operations and
its cash flows.
The audit opinion expressed in this report has been formed on the above basis.

In my opinion, the financial report presents fairly in accordance with applicable Accounting Standards
and other mandatory professional reporting requirements the financial position of Co.As.It. Italian
Association of Assistance as at 31st December 2007 and the results of its operations and its cash
flows for the year then ended.
