concerts, exhibits and lectures to celebrate Italian
culture in New York, the largest Italian city outside of
Italy. Each year focuses on a specific theme
representative of the history and culture of Italy and

n 2006, the Italian Heritage
and Culture Committee of
New York celebrates its 30th
Anniversary, dedicated to "Celebrating Italian Genius: The Leonardo daVinci Legacy."
This year’s theme is especially appropriate as daVinci represents excellence and innovation in the Italian
Arts and Sciences. Events throughout
October will highlight this all encompassing theme of remarkable creativity and outstanding accomplishment. Just think, 30 years of special
events, concerts, exhibits, lectures
and proclamations to inform greater
New York, the largest Italian city outside Italy, of an important part of its
world culture!
Beginning in 1976, Italian heritage and culture in New York City
was celebrated with week long events
with Mayor Abraham Beame proclaiming the first "Italian Culture
Week." By 1982, the celebrations were dedicated
to an annual historical
idea or personality representative of the culture of
Italy. In 1985, the festivities moved to October
to coincide with the

L’argomento di quest’anno e`
particolarmente appropriato essendo
da Vinci prototipo di eccellenza ed
innovazione apportate nel campo
dell’arte e delle scienze. Durante il
mese di ottobre le varie manifestazioni
metteranno in evidenza questa
eccezionale, illimitata creativita’.
Un trentennio di straordinari
eventi, concerti, spettacoli, conferenze
e proclami per mantenere vivido il
retaggio culturale italiano a New
York, la citta` italiana piu` grande del
mondo al di fuori dell’Italia.
Agli inizi del 1976 Abraham
Beame, sindaco di New York,
proclamo` la prima "Settimana
Culturale Italiana" che
fu
variamente
celebrata
durante l’intera settimana,
dal 17 al 23 maggio. Dal
1982 ogni manifestazione
fu dedicata ad un‘idea
storica o ad un personaggio
famoso della storia o
cultura italiana. Nel 1985 la
celebrazione fu prolungata

Columbus Day celebrations, and "Italian Culture Week "became "Italian
Culture Month" and ultimately "Italian Heritage and Culture Month."
As enthusiasm and participation
grew, the events actually begin in September and overflow into November.
One month is not enough! Also, the
Committee’s endeavors have been the
inspiration and prototype for similar
celebrations in other cities, such as
Boston and Los Angeles.
These 30 years of accomplishments grew from an idea of Dr. Angelo Gimondo, then President of the
Italian Bilingual Educators Association and subsequently Superintendent of Schools, District 30. Dr. Gimondo has served continuously as
the President and Chairman of the
Italian Heritage and Culture Committee’s Board of Directors. In 1976,
in promoting a week long celebration
of Italian language and culture, Dr.
Gimondo found like minded enthusiasm in Rosamaria Riccio Pietanza,
then President of the Italian Teacher’s
Association. In 1976, the
two colleagues proposed
the idea to Dr. Leo Bernardo, Director for the Bureau of Foreign Languages, who was easily
persuaded of the usefulness and importance of

fino a novembre. Un solo mese non e`
sufficiente! Inoltre i successi del
Comitato sono stati d’ispirazione ed
hanno fatto da prototipo ad altre citta`
quali Boston e Los Angeles.
Questi trent’anni di positivi
risultati traggono origine da un’idea
del Dott. Angelo Gimondo, allora
Presidente dell’Italian Bilingual
Educators
Association
e
successivamente Superintendent of
Schools, District 30-New York. A
tutt’oggi il Dott. Gimondo continua
ad essere President and Chairman
del Comitato di volontari che dirige
e coordina le celebrazioni del Mese
del Retaggio Culturale Italiano nei
cinque "boroughs" di New York. Nel
1976, nel promuovere una Settimana
della lingua e cultura italiana, il Dott.
Gimondo trovo’ lo stesso

the project. Dr. Gimondo was appointed Citywide-Coordinator, and
the first celebration was put forth under the auspices of the Bureau of Foreign Languages of the Board of Education of the City of New York. In
1977, Ms. Pietanza became city Cocoordinator, and the Board of Education sponsored the second year’s
events.
In 1978, a committee began to
evolve. Dr. Stephen Aiello, then President of the New York City Board of
Education and later President Jimmy
Carter’s special assistant for ethnic affairs, became the first Honorary
Chairman of the "Italian Culture
Week Committee." The following
year, Italy’s Consul General in New
York, Allesandro Cortese De Bosis,
became Honorary Co-Chairman,
and a Board of Directors was
formed with Angelo Gimondo as
Chairman and Ms. Pietanza as President. Mico Delianova Licastro, an
entrepreneur and producer of Italian
cultural events, became Executive
Director.
In 1980,
Josephine Belli succeeded
Ms. Pietanza as City
Wide Coordinator. In
addition to Dr. Gimondo, Mr. Licastro and Ms.
Belli, founding members
who have served actively

and continuously on the Committee
include George Altomare, Dr. Barbara Gerard and Dr. Mario Fratti. In
1981, Professor Irene Impellizzeri,
who later became Vice President of
the Board of Education, was appointed as another Honorary Chair.
The Committee has expanded to
its present 50 volunteer member
Board, including Officers, Committee Chairs, Honorary Chairs, Administrative Assistants and Board of
Advisors. The Committee members
represent eminent representatives of
the Italian and Italian American community. Many Committee members
are officers or members of leading
Italian organizations and bring the
knowledge and support of these
agencies in a collaborative effort for
"Italian Culture and Heritage
Month." Some represent statewide
and national organizations, such as
Jack Como, President, Italian American Legal Defense and Higher Education Fund; John Mustaro, President, The United Pugliesi Federation
of the Metropolitan Area;
Joseph Sciame, Past National President, Sons of
Italy; and Lea Serra, President Emeritus, Guild of
Italian American Actors.
Other distinguished members of the Board, who

have served over the past, are Judge
Dominic Massaro, New York State
Supreme Court; Professor Gaetano
Cipolla, President, Casa Sicilia; and
Paul Patane, Board of Education.
Among the Committee are several
Cavalieri and Commendatori, decorated by the Italian Government for
their individual contributions. One
such personality is Judge Dominic
Massaro, who was given the title of
Cavaliere di Gran Croce, the highest
Italian Government recognition of
merit and one of only ten such
named. For several decades the Administrative Assistants Tina Alfano
and Joseph Mongitore have worked
tirelessly on behalf of the Committee.
Initially, the Committee’s aim was
to preserve and promote the study of
the Italian language, but the scope
soon expanded. The present Committee is involved not only in promoting, coordinating, presenting
and/or producing activities that celebrate Italian heritage and culture but
also in educating the general public
about Italians’ positive
contributions to America.
A decision early on was to
represent the whole cycle
of Italian culture, both
popular and classical, including folkloric traditions to opera; pre-Roman

of Italy. Altri eminenti membri del

e` Judge Dominic Massaro a cui e`
stato dato il titolo onorifico di Cavaliere
di Gran Croce, la piu` alta onorificenza
concessa dal Governo italiano, solo ad
uno dei dieci decorati.
Per parecchi decenni Tina Alfano
e Joseph Mongitore, in qualita` di
Administrative Assistants, hanno
lavorato incessantemente per conto e
nome del Comitato.
Agli inizi lo scopo del Comitato
era la preservazione e la promozione
dello studio della lingua italiana, ma
lo scopo si e` poi esteso. L’interesse
dell’attuale Comitato non e’ soltanto
quello di promuovere, coordinare,
presentare e /o produrre attivita` che
celebrano l’eredita` e la
cultura italiana, ma anche
di diffondere nel pubblico
la
conoscenza
dell’immenso contributo
apportato dagli italiani
nella formazione della
grande America. Si decise

to the Roman Empire and Middle
Ages, onto the painters, scientists and
scholars of the Renaissance, the heroes of the Risorgimento and the
"personaggi" of the modern Italian
Republic; the contributions of the
Explorers of the Old World to the immigrants, as well as the contemporary artists, musicians, writers, scientists, civic leaders and entrepreneurs
of the New. Taken together this is
Italian and Italian American heritage
and culture.
di rappresentare la cultura italiana
nella sua interezza , quella popolare e
quella classica, dal folklore all’opera,
dall’eta` preistorica al Medioevo, i
pittori e gli scultori del Rinascimento,
gli eroi del Risorgimento, personalita`
della Repubblica Italiana, il contributo
degli esploratori del Mondo Antico
all’emigrazione cosi` come gli artisti,
musicisti, scrittori, scienziati, autorita`
civiche ed imprenditori contemporanei.

culturale italiana.
The Committee’s initial and ongoing commitment to language and
education continues to be accomplished by involving the Board of Education in such activities as theme related poetry and essay contests, with
the award of a trip to Italy, which has
engaged the interest of children of all
ages. Every October, the students of
La Scuola d’Italia Gugliemo Marconi
have actively participated through
singing performances at Committee
events and engaging in other school
based activities, under the direction of
Prof. Bianca Padolecchia
Goodrich, Headmistress,
and Pia Pedicini, Deputy
Head and Director for Admissions. At the Millennium, a high school poster
design contest brought
forth the annual poster
Il proposito iniziale ed attuale del
Comitato verso lo studio e la
preservazione della lingua italiana
continua ad essere effettuato
coinvolgendo il Board of Education
in alcune attivita` quali concorsi nel
campo della poesia e componimento
avente come premio un viaggio in
Italia, cosa che ha attratto l’interesse
di ragazzi di tutte le eta`. Durante il
mese di ottobre gli alunni della Scuola
d’Italia Guglielmo Marconi hanno
sempre partecipato attivamente con
spettacoli canori ed altre avvincenti
rappresentazioni sotto la direzione
della Preside, Prof.ssa Bianca
Padolecchia Goodrich e della
Vice Preside, Pia Pedicini, In
occasione del Millennio il
concorso indetto all’High
School per il disegno del
manifesto commemorativo ha
dato la versione di un

with contemporary symbols, depicting Italian soccer, cinema, wine, music, immigration and Italy.
Over the years, with the initiative
and coordination of Board members,
there has been an expansion of local
Proclamations to include all of the
New York Borough Presidents, the
City Council, Comptroller and every
Mayor, beginning with Mayor Beam,
then Edward Koch, David Dinkins,
Rudolph Giuliani and Michael
Bloomberg, whose celebrations are
now held annually at Gracie Mansion. Three New York State governors, Hugh Carey and, in particular
the two succeeding governors, both
of Italian heritage, Governor Mario
Cuomo (83-94), whose support was
present from the beginning, and Governor George Pataki, (95-present)
have held annual special events. The
Committee members who have initiated and coordinated worthwhile
Proclamation events include Nancy
Indelicato (Manhattan Borough President, New York State Legislatures),
Joseph Sciame (Queens
Borough President), Joan
Migliori (Staten Island
Borough President), Dr.
Barbara Gerard (Comptroller, City Council), Mico Delianova Licastro

governors’ representatives for Italian
affairs, Rosemarie Gallina Santangelo and Claudia Massimo Berns, ensured meaningful, well attended and
well received Governor’s events during every October. This year the New
York State Senate and Assembly
adopted a joint Legislative Resolution honoring the 30th Anniversary
Celebration, spearheaded by Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito, President,
Conference of Italian American Legislatures. Even the Presidents of the
United States have issued a Proclamation for the Month.
Also, during this time every Cardinal of the Archdiocese of New York

Mass, which has been, for many
years. in collaboration with the Italian Apostolate, consisting of several
Board members, and through the
wholehearted efforts of its Former
Executive Director, Rev. Monsignor
George J. Cascelli.
As the scope and reputation of the
committee’s work expanded, so did
its sponsorship. Being a
totally volunteer Board,
the Committee functions
with the support of contributions. In 1985, when
"Italian Culture Week"
became "Italian Culture
Month" and moved to

Massimo Berns, a vicenda incaricate degli
"Italian Affairs" dai due ultimi
governatori, hanno fatto si` che gli eventi
culturali sostenuti dal Governatore
durante il mese di ottobre fossero un
vero successo. Quest’anno, onde
onorare la celebrazione del 30.mo
anniversario, il "New York State
Senate and Assembly" hanno emesso
una "joint legislative Resolution", su
iniziativa di RoAnn Destino,
Presidente della "Conference of
Italian American Legislature".
Persino i Presidenti degli Stati Uniti
d’America hanno emanato un
Proclama del Mese del Retaggio
Culturale Italiano.
In questo stesso periodo ciascun
Cardinale dell’Archidiocesi di New
York ha celebrato una S. Messa nella
giornata dedicata a Cristoforo
Colombo. Fu questa un’iniziativa dell’
"Italian Apostolate", di cui fanno parte
molti membri del "Board", continuata
poi per molti anni dal l’ottimo Rev.
Monsignore George J. Cascelli,
"Former Executive Director".
Con l’espandersi del
proposito e della reputazione
del Comitato e` di pari passo
aumentato il numero dei
finanziatori.
Infatti il
"Board", totalmente formato
da volontari, funziona sulla

October, the Committee’s request for
Italian Government involvement was
granted with their bringing from Italy
"Italy on Stage", a program of theatrical performances, cinema series,
concerts and exhibits under the sponsorship of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Giancarlo Riccio, former Vice-Consul in New York, and at
the time a high Foreign Ministry official, worked tirelessly. His efforts
were sensational, bringing to New
York the most famous names in Italian
culture and show business. Uto Ughi,
world famous violist, performed; a
cinema series dedicated to the Maestro
of Italian Comedy, Alberto Sordi, was
shown; an exhibit on actress Elenora
Duse, Italian popular musical groups’
performances and a great deal of theater were realized.
This successful experiment was
repeated in 1987 with a second edition of "Italy on Stage", even richer
in names and productions than its
predecessor. That year, in one month
alone, the whole great tradition of the
Italian theatre was on display on the stages of the
Big Apple: from director
Luca Ronconi’s reading of
Goldoni’s "La Serva
Amorosa", an almost forgotten work by the great
Venetian playwright; and

violinista di fama mondiale, una serie
cinematografica dedicata al Maestro
della Commedia Italiana, Alberto
Sordi, una mostra su "Eleonora Duse",
gruppi della musica popolare italiana e
molteplici rappresentazioni teatrali.
Questo grande successo ebbe
seguito nel 1987 con una
seconda edizione di "Italy
on Stage" ancora piu`
ricca della precedente in

Sonagli", interpreted by the great Sicilian actor Turi Ferro; to the "Pulcinella" staged by Maurizio Scaparo
and based on a text by director
Roberto Rossellini, with the actor
and singer Massimo Ranieri behind
the Neapolitan mask. Music was
represented by the Teatro San Carlo
of Naples, celebrating its 250th Anniversary. Two works by Pergolesi
were staged, "La Serva Padrona" and
"Stabat Mater", directed by Roberto
de Simone. Finally the exhibition,
"Silver from the Treasure of San Gennaro", was incredibly striking for its
beauty and originality. The 1987 edition of "Italy on Stage" was as grand
as it was expensive. A great success,
but also the last with the direct participation of the Italian Government’s
producing events for "Italian Heritage and Culture Month."
In recent years, the Italian Government, through the Italian Consulate in New York, has sponsored
kick-off receptions for the
Month. In October 1996,

along with their careers,

nity. Several of the Committee members received, on behalf of the Italian
Government, this Distinguished Service Award in recognition of outstanding contributions and dedicated
service to the Italian American community. In 2002, Consul General
Giorgio Radicati gave a Certificate of
Recognition to several of the Italian
Heritage and Culture Committee
members for their work on behalf of
Italian Culture Month. Presently
Consul General Antonio Bandini has
been instrumental in the approval of
funds toward the cost of publishing
the Month’s posters and booklets.
The Directors of the Italian Cultural
Institute, likewise, have always collaborated in the promotion of events
celebrating Italian culture. Their representative, Board member Giuliana
Ridolfi Cardillo, has effectively coordinated their October activities with
the Committee’s. The Committee is
otherwise grateful for the Institute’s
hosting the Committee’s monthly
meetings for more than a decade.
Other organizations
have been significant contributors. Since the Committee’s inception, Dr. Gimondo has vigorously led
the effort to make the
funding of its endeavors a
reality. He has always

sustain the Committee’s accomplishments. At the beginning, Fortune
Pope, editor of "Il Progresso
Italoamericano", and his Pope Foundation donated scholarships and defrayed other expenses. Mr. Pope was
the first to give a significant grant for
several years. Over the more recent
years, most outstanding has been the
consistent support of the Columbus
Citizen’s Foundation through Laurence Auriana, Chairman, and Louis
Talliarini, current President, as well
as the sustained funding of the
Baronessa Mariuccia Zerilli-Marimo`. NIAF, through the efforts of
Frances Rello, an educator and former Board member, contributed
some funding. From time to time Mico Delianova Licastro has obtained
sponsors for the funding of certain
projects, such as the production of
the posters. Grants written by Nancy Indelicato have been submitted to
the NY State Council on the Arts.
Collaborating with Berardo Paradiso, President, Italy
America Chamber of
Commerce, and with other organizations, such as
the United Nations’ Il Circolo Italiano, has enriched

All are recognized in the annual Calendar of Events, all believing in the
importance of Italian heritage and
culture.
It is important to review here the
annual themes and highlight some of
the events, representative of the diversity and quality of the annual presentations. Each was not only an enjoyable, contemporary cultural
experience at the time, but also an education in Italian history illustrative
of the impact of Italian genius. Certainly serious, actually the events
were also fun. Through them the
Committee has positively influenced
tens of thousands of people. Even the
experienced Committee members,
sometimes, found themselves scrambling for their history books and encyclopedias to learn for themselves
about some unknown aspect or
undiscovered personality of Italian
heritage and culture. Also, whether
an opera performance, academic lecture on the themes, the
making of a pasta map of
Italy or a preview
of the film farce "Johnny
Stecchino", Italian culture it is.
In 1982, at the centenary of the death of

Comitato

persone. A dire il vero, anche esperti
membri del Comitato
talvolta si sono ritrovati a
sfogliare i loro libri di
storia ed enciclopedie per
apprendere a loro volta

Giuseppe Garibaldi, the week was dedicated to the "Hero of the Two
Worlds", the protagonist of the
Risorgimento. Thanks to the collaboration of New York University and
its Center for Contemporary Italian
Culture, an excellent program was
produced in front of the statue of
Garibaldi in New York City’s Washington Square, with a proclamation
by Mayor Ed Koch and in the presence of the Italian hero’s great-granddaughter, Anita Garibaldi. At the
university, lectures were presented
and film screenings featured such
classics as Blasetti’s "1860", Visconti’s "Il Gattopardo", Rossellini’s
"Vanina Vanini" and the Taviani
brother’s "Allonsanfan", culminating
in Pastrone’s 1913 masterpiece,
"Cabiria", with text by D’Annuzio
and music by Ildebrando Pizzetti. Also presented during that week were
concerts of the "Musician of the
Risorgimento", Giuseppe Verdi.
During the week in 1984, "The
Year of the Etruscans" traced Italian
heritage to pre-Roman ancient history. For the first
October celebrations in
1985, "Building America", the Italian American
contribution to this nation
was underscored.
In
1986, to coincide with the

immigration experience and contributions. 1987 was the "Year of the
U.S. Constitution: Mazzei and the
Italian Contribution", the tribute to
Filippo Mazzei and his contribution
to the Declaration of Independence;
1988 was dedicated to "Lorenzo
DaPonte/Academia", the first promoter of Italian culture in America,
sponsor of the first New York Opera
House, first Professor of Italian language at Columbia University and librettist to Mozart. During the prior
year for the celebration of the anniversary of DaPonte’s becoming an
American citizen, the Committee collaborated with the Native New Yorkers Historical Society and Calvary
Cemetery to research the location of
DaPonte’s final resting place. For the
occasion and of great historical significance was the confirmation that
DaPonte rests in an unmarked grave
in the free ground at Calvary Cemetery where they erected
and dedicated an appropriate memorial headstone. In 1989, the theme

celebrations throughout the nation.
In 1993, "The Legacy of Italy’s Artistic and Cultural Contributions to the
World" highlighted civilization’s
debt to Italy. In 1994, "Italian Americans in Law: from Beccaria to
Scalia" hailed the contributions of
great Italian jurists over the centuries.
In 1995, "Gugliemo Marconi: Centennial of the Radio" was marked
with events with his daughters Gioa
Marconi Braga and Princess Elettra
Marconi participating. Since his invention, communication has never
been the same.
In 1996, marking the
20th Anniversary of the
Italian Heritage and Culture Committee, "Italy
and its Regions-L’Italia
delle Regioni" was chosen
as the number of regions

food and customs. Events such as
"A Taste of Italy" shared the food,
wine and culture of the various regions. Public and private schools, as
has been their annual tradition, enthusiastically joined in with oral histories, Italian music, research reports,
exhibits, poetry recitals, food presentations, contests, posters and folk
dances. Also a major highlight was
the presentation at the Museum of
Natural History of "Leonardo’s
Codex Leichester: A Masterpiece of
Science", the only manuscript by
Leonardo in private hands and the
only one in America. A special written history of the Committee, some
incorporated here, was produced for
the occasion, written in Italian by Stefano Vaccara, journalist, translated
into English by editor Kristen
Moehlmann.
In 1997, the theme was dedicated
to "The Voyages of Giovanni
Caboto: 500th Anniversary" of his landing in Nova Scotia on June 24,
1497. Lectures, such as
"How Giovanni Caboto
Became John Cabot", by
Chief Judge Emeritus Edward D. Re, shed light on

the Cabots’ Italian, not old New England origins. During that October also the memorable "Mechanical Marvels: Invention in the Age of
Leonardo" was exhibited at the Liberty Gallery of the World Financial
Center. It included 50 remarkable
working models of the machines of
the Renaissance artist-engineer, covering from the dome of the Florentine
Cathedral to the death of Leonardo,
constructed with the same materials
and construction employed in the Renaissance. The multimedia exhibit,
which included visual animation of
the machines in operation and virtual reality of his great achievements,
was organized by the Institute and
Museum of History of Science, Florence, Italy, and Finemeccanica.
In 1998, "New York City at 100:
Italian Americans Commemorate
The Immigrant Experience (Patria e
Famiglia)" put forth the positive impact of Italians and Italian Americans
on New York City from the moment
Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed the
Narrows in 1524 to the
opening of the Armani
boutique on Madison Ave
in the ’90’s. An important
photographic exhibit, a

straordinari modelli funzionanti di
macchine dell’artista-ingegnere del

world, was realized by Franco Maricchiolo, photographer from Messina, Sicily. The exhibit at St. John’s
University featured many New York
personalities, including several Board
members. That year also marked the
first Zerilli-Marimo`prize for Italian
literature.
In 1999, the immigration experience was elaborated in "The Italians
of New York: Five Centuries of
Struggle and Achievement." The
highlight was the John D. Calandra
Italian American Institute’s presentation at the New York Historical Society of one of the most comprehensive
and ambitious cultural exhibit of its
kind. Planned over three years with
the assistance of prominent scholars
in Italian American studies and under
the directorship of Dr. Joseph Scelsa,
the four month long exhibit focused
on the important phases of Italian
American life in New York City, including the great migration, community life, building New York, Italian
politics, cultural life and ethnic identity. At the exhibit’s inaugural reception a collector’s edition of the
sculpture of an Italian
American immigrant family, entitled "La Bellisima
America: America the
Beautiful," was also pre42

American Museum’s being established and chartered by New York
State in 2001. The New York Sons of
Italy Grand Lodge also sponsored a
reception for the annual lighting of
the Empire State Building in the Italian tri-colori red, white and green. A
former Board member, Giuseppe
Zagame, in collaboration with the
United States Postal Service, sponsored a temporary postal station of
one of his many annual special pictorial, slogan hand stamp cancellations
of important Italian personalities.
At the Millennium, celebrations
centered on "Italy in the Year 2000:
Italian Heritage and Cultural Roots
at the Threshold of the Millennium."
The emphasis was on contemporary
fashion, science and art. Italy, the
fifth leading nation economically
worldwide, heralded in the Millennium with their inimitable
fashion and design, sporting their essential "telefonini", since long before
it was fashionable in
America. Over 250 pieces

and role in current International affairs and its future prospects in a
modern society.
2001 "Giuseppe Verdi: A Tribute
to Italy’s Patriotic Composer"
brought forth lectures, videos, his
grandson and music, music, music!
Viva Verdi concerts and homages to
Verdi, the patriot and composer, were
celebrated all over the Tri-state area.
Maestro Vincent La Selva conducted
his New York Grand Opera through
the entire cycle of the 28 Verdi operas
in chronological order, beginning in
1994 and culminating in this centennial year, assuring him a
place in The Guinness
Book of Records as the
only person to do so.
In 2002, "Constantino
Brumidi: The Artist of the
U.S. Capitol" brought to
light his relatively un46

America. Two major commemorative
events in New York City were the
highlight. Brumidi was the inspiration. The concert tribute at the
Church of the Holy Innocents, featuring the sacred music of the Highbridge Voices multi-ethnic youth chorus and the inspired piano selections
of Cristiana Pegoraro, was organized
by Board member Berardo Paradiso,
Chair of Special Events. Board member Nancy Indelicato, former Chair
of Special Events and former Chair of
Fund Raising, co-chaired with Rev.
Sean R. Harlow, O.Carm., Pastor, the
"Gala Ceremony and Celebration of
the Blessing and Rededication of
Constantino Brumidi’s ‘The Crucifixion’ ", his monumental 22 foot by
44 foot fresco above the main altar at
Our Lady of the Scapular and St.
Stephen’s Church. The Blessing was
given by Auxiliary Bishop of New
York William J. McCormick, D.D.,
who also read greetings
from His Eminence Edward Cardinal Egan,
Archbishop of New York.

gala reception followed. This also
was the kick-off campaign to restore
the entire church, of which the walls,
columns, ceiling, other murals, stations of the cross and portraits of the
martyrs and saints represent the
largest body of Brumidi’s artwork
outside the Capitol. A little known
fact was Brumidi’s being commissioned to paint this church before
coming to America and his working
in New York while the United States
Congress was in session as he was
contemporaneously decorating the
Capitol dome. As a result Ms. Indelicato remains on the Honorary Advisory Board of Brumidi/NY Restoration Committee. In 2005, on the
bicentennial anniversary of his birth,
the celebrations reached the United
States Capitol with the national government proclaiming his contribution
as the "Michelangelo of
the United States Capitol."
In 2003, during "Italian Opera: Celebrating
the Centennial of Enrico
Caruso’s American Debut", the most famous

by Aldo Mancusi, the founder of the
Enrico Caruso Museum. Caruso’s life
and times also were expounded
through lectures, original recordings
and film screenings. Opera: Italy’s
gift to the world, beginning in 1600.
In 2004, "Amerigo Vespucci: An
Italian Name for America the Beautiful" was befitting for the 550th Anniversary of his birth as he was the
first to claim that this continent was,
indeed, a New World, not part of
Asia! Among many celebrations, the
Commemorative Concert of this
great Italian navigator was produced
at the DiCapo Opera Theater.
In 2005, "Giuseppe Mazzini: The
Political Idealist of the Italian Struggle for Independence" gave homage
to the Italian patriot of the Risorgimento, who dedicated himself to the
cause of Italian independence and
unity. The 200th Anniversary of his birth was
celebrated with a series of
concerts by Il Coro del
Lunedi, the acclaimed 40
member chorus, from
Rome, Italy, led by Maestro Cesare Pocci and Fa52
tenore piu` famoso dei tempi passati,
Enrico Caruso, e gioire dei libretti,
fotografie, caricature, costumi e
cartelloni esposti da Aldo Mancusi il
fondatore del Museo Enrico Caruso. La
vita di Caruso e la sua epoca furono

registrazioni originali e films. Sin dal

Following the general theme elsewhere OSIA sponsored a display of
the Italian American Congressional
Medal of Honor Recipients, and lectures were given on such topics as
"The Sacco and Vanzetti Case and
American Jurisprudence."
If a picture is worth a thousand
words, Italian art and design is worth
a million. It certainly made the good
word travel. As technology grew so
did the Committee’s expertise and sophistication with the visual arts and
media. Every year the original colored posters and the Calendar of
Events booklet capture the theme
through art, becoming collector’s
items. 10,000 are distributed annually.

Comitato divennero piu` sofisticate.
Ogni anno gli originali manifesti a colori
ed il libretto-calendario degli eventi si
ispirano all’arte e diventano articoli da
collezione. Annualmente ne
vengono distribuiti 10.000.

depicted the 20th Anniversary theme.
In 1998, Ralph Fassanella’s portrait
of the "Family Supper" was a memorable representation of the Immigrant
experience by one of America’s greatest Italian American artists. Gerry
Castaneda was the high school student
who designed the Millennium poster.
Constance del Vecchio Maltese depicted Verdi. Starting in 2003, Board
member John Battista DeSantis has
provided creative direction and design of several posters, including the
30th Anniversary design, and other
Committee visual materials. For the
first time, a second graphic poster, designed by Joseph Cipri, was presented along with a traditional portrait poster of
Mazzini.
Television has brought
national recognition and attention to the Committee’s
endeavors.

During Dr. Gimondo’s tenure as
Superintendent of CSD 30, Mr. Dennis Swanson, President of NBC, was
assigned to Dr. Gimondo’s district as
"Superintendent for a Day", thus a
cordial relationship developed between them. It was at that time that
Dr. Gimondo requested Mr. Swanson’s assistance in the production of
brief videos reflecting the Month’s
theme, which could be broadcast several times during October. Subsequently Mr. Swanson moved to CBS
where Dr. Gimondo met with him
and was introduced to the Vice President of CBS, Mr. Russo, who agreed
to produce the videos. Dr. Gimondo
formed a committee including John
Dabbene, Board member and National President, OSIA Commission
for Social Justice, and Claudia Massimo Berns, Board Member and Governor’s Pataki’s representative to the
Italian community, who met with
CBS officials to plan the content of
the videos. Mr. Dabbene became the
Committee’s liaison in providing CBS with material
and information related to
each month’s theme for the
past four years. These Italian minutes on related
theme topics are certainly
educational and a positive

with Joseph Scelsa, Dean of the Calandra Italian American Institute and
Maria Fosco, its former Director of
Administration and Community Programs, and then Geoffrey Claroni,
formerly of the Calandra Institute
and now Director of Programs,
Westchester Italian Cultural Center,
along with Rosa Casiello O’Day’s
ever constant input, has ensured the
publishing of a very professional and
ever expanding Calendar of Events.
10,000 copies of the now 6o page
booklet, with informational bookmarks produced by John De Santis
in collaboration with the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, are distributed
annually.
Aside from promoting,
coordinating and producing individual events, for
the past several years the
Committee has sponsored, sometimes in collaboration with others,

Italian conference at Pace University
was Committee sponsored. Also,
"Napoli-NY Andata e Ritorno", a
one woman show by Elena Bonelli,
was presented at Columbia University’s Casa Italiana Piccolo Teatro. After 9/11, there have been annual
Memorial Concerts at the United Nations in collaboration with the Italian
American Chamber of Commerce
and the United Nations’ Il Circolo
Italiano. In 2002, the Brumidi celebrations at the Church of the Holy
Innocents and Our Lady of the
Scapular and St. Stephens Church
followed. They continued on with
the special piano recital in 2003 and
then in 2004 with the Verdi opera
concert, both at the DiCapo Opera
Theater. In 2005, there was Il Coro
del Lunedi’s U.S. Tournee` in New
York and Washington, D.C. In this
special 30th Anniversary year a celebration is being planned by a
committee of Board members:
Maria Marinello, Chair, Claudia
Massimo Berns, Dr. Barbara Gerard, Nancy Indelicato and
Josephine Maietta. It is expected
to be an elegant, well deserved congratulatory
celebration of 30 years,
well done. The Committee’s daVinci award will
be given that evening.

eminent international playwright and

of Italian Arts, Sciences, Language and
Culture. The first daVinci sculpture
was designed by the accomplished
Maestro Domenic Mazzoni, an Italian
American artist from New Jersey;
through the efforts of
Board member Ralph
LaGamba, the current rendition is produced by Maestro Silvio Amelio, an Italian sculptor from Taverna,
Italy, who also has donated the medallion mold to

Zerilli-Marimo`, fondatrice della Casa

contributo alla promozione delle Arti,
Scienze, Lingua e Cultura italiana.
La prima scultura del da Vinci fu
disegnata dall’emerito Maestro
Domenic Mazzoni, un artista italoamericano di New Jersey; attraverso
l’interessamento di Ralph La Gamba
membro del "Board". Attualmente e`
opera del Maestro Silvio Amelio, uno
scultore italiano di Taverna, Italia, il
quale ha anche donato al Comitato lo
stampo del medaglione.
Da Vinci, il simbolo italiano di
eccellenza, luminosita` ed ispirazione,
riporta alla mente quanto il Comitato
del Retaggio Culturale Italiano di
New York ha rappresentato ed
effettuato in un trentennio di lavoro.
Qualunque il bisogno,
qualunque l’idea si e`
sempre trovata una risorsa,
un volontario, il desiderio
di farlo diventare realta`.
L’intero Comitato e` stato
certamente lodevole.

daVinci, the Italian symbol of excellence, enlightenment and inspiration. daVinci brings to mind what
the Italian Heritage and Culture
Committee of New York has represented and has accomplished in their
30 years of work. Whatever the
need, whatever the idea there has always been a resource, a volunteer, a
desire to make it happen. The Committee’s whole, certainly, has been
fantastically greater than its parts.
Thirty years ago, the idea began with
two people, Dr. Angelo Gimondo and
Ms. Rosamaria Riccio Pietanza, first
wanting to promote Italian language
and then more encompassingly Italian
culture and heritage. It evolved into a
large standing, prestigious Committee.
It began as a week in March and evolved
into hundreds of events throughout October, in all five Boroughs and in the
greater Tri-State area. Beginning with
the Board of Education, it now involves
collaborative efforts with important Italian and Italian American organizations,
universities, colleges, and leading cultural institutions. It reaches an ever widening national and international audience,
attracting supporters and believers throughout America
and Italy. It has highlighted,
honored and brought to light
past and current contributions
of Italian heritage and culture.
It has changed negative stereotypes into positive perceptions,
inspired many, including new

alla conoscenza e propagazione della
lingua italiana ed in seguito del
retaggio culturale italiano. Il duo si
evolse poi in un ampio comitato
formato da significative e prominenti
personalita`. Da una settimana di
celebrazione nel mese di marzo si
passo` poi ad un centinaio di
molteplici attivita` nei cinque
"boroughs" e nei Tre-Stati durante
l’intero mese di ottobre. Attualmente
il Comitato gode della collaborazione
del "Board of Education" e delle piu`
rilevanti organizzazioni, universita`,
collegi ed istituzioni culturali di alto
prestigio sia italiane che italoamericane. Riesce a raggiungere un
vasto
uditorio
nazionale
ed
internazionale suscitando fiducia ed
attraendo sostenitori in America ed in
Italia. Ha posto in evidenza, onorato e
messo in luce la grande ed importante
influenza passata e presente del retaggio
culturale italiano. Ha avuto la capacita`
di trasformare i stereotipi negativi in
concezioni positive.
E` stato
d’ispirazione a molti, soprattutto alle
nuove generazioni ed ha garantito la
continuita` nel serbare il patrimonio
italiano.
Nell’incamminarci verso il
nuovo Millennio il Comitato
si propone di espandere le
attivita` ed impegnarsi
ulteriormente verso le future
generazioni
soprattutto
attraverso
l’ampliamento

and ensured the Italian legacy.
As we march into the new Millennium,
the Committee’s goals include the expansion of events and a further commitment to
the coming generations, especially through
language and culture in the schools. In
1976, 10,000 students studied Italian in
greater New York, now 37,000 students of
Italian in the Tri State area; 750,000 students are studying Italian nationwide.
The vision remains the establishment of a permanent cultural center
with supporting staff. However, with
or without the actual physical structure,
equipment or staff, the Committee continues with its dedicated members, volunteering their time, their talent; sharing their enthusiasm and never ending
perpetual pride and belief in the legitimacy and importance of Italian heritage and culture…passing it on…striving for excellence…always celebrating
the Italian genius…always hoping to
enlighten and inspire.

sistema scolastico. Nel 1976 era 10.000
il numero degli studenti che studiava la
lingua italiana nella grandiosa New
York, ora 37.000 sono gli studenti di
lingua italiana nei Tre Stati; su base
nazionale ammonta a 750,000 il numero
degli studenti che studiano l’italiano.
Sempre vivida rimane la visione di
una sede per farne un centro di cultura
italiano permanente con personale
qualificato ed a tempo pieno. Tuttavia,
con o senza la struttura fisica,
attrezzatura e personale , il Comitato
continua la sua opera insieme con i
suoi dedicati membri, dando il loro
tempo e talento su base volontaria,
apportando il contributo del loro
entusiasmo, l’orgoglio senza fine o
limiti e la fede nella legittimita` ed
importanza del retaggio culturale
italiano ...tramandandolo…lottando
per eccellere….celebrando sempre il
Genio Italiano……sempre sperando di
essere d’ispirazione.
