Opera in two acts. Music by Rossini, libretto by Cesare Sterbini, after the play 'Le Barbier de Séville' (1775) by Beaumarchais. First performed Rome, 20 Feb 1816. A comic opera that is a staple of the repertoire, with many famous arias in addition to the frequently head overture: the 'Largo al factotum', Figaro's song in praise of himself; 'Una voce poco fa'; 'La calunnia'. The characters are the same as appear in Mozart's 'Marriage of Figaro'. The lighthearted and sprightly nature of Rossini's music has seen music from the Barber used in countless films, adverts and even cartoons, including 'Citizen Kane', 'Help', 'A Clockwork Orange', 'Prizzi's Honour', and 'A Fish Called Wanda'. Question: What is the relationship between Rossini’s character Figaro in ―The Barber of Seville‖ and Mozart’s character Figaro in ―Le Nozze di Figaro‖. Answer: Figaro, the main character in Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" (Marriage of Figaro), is "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" (the barber of Seville)! Based on Beaumarchais's trilogy of "Figaro", " Le Nozze di Figaro" is the sequel to "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" in terms of plot, even though Mozart had composed his opera 30 years before Rossini composed his. Rossini’s - The Story of "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" Count Almaviva falls in love with Rosina, the ward of Dr. Bartolo, who wants to marry Rosina because of her beauty and her money. Figaro, a barber and the busybody of Seville offers his help to the Count. Count disguises himself first as a drunken soldier and then a music teacher just to get into Bartolo's house to see Rosina. He succeeds and convinces Rosina to run away and marry him. Bartolo produces a love letter supposedly written by one of the Count's many mistresses. Rosina changes her mind upon hearing of the letter and decides to marry Bartolo instead. Just as Bartolo brings back the notary for the wedding, Rosina discovers that the letter was actually one of her own letters to the Count. No longer jealous, Rosina marries the Count. Mozart’s - The Story of "Le Nozze di Figaro" Figaro, previously the barber of Seville, is now the valet to Count Almaviva. Figaro is engaged to Susanna, maid to the Countess Almaviva. Everything seems fine, but the Count wants Susanna for himself, while another servant, Cherubino fancies the Countess. If that is not enough, Marcellina, maid to Bartolo who was supposed to wed the Countess, wants Figaro to pay up an old loan or marry her. Since there are so many characters shot by Cupid's random arrows, there are a lot of comic encounters in this opera. At the end, Figaro and Susanna marry each other, the Count and Countess reconcile, and Marcellina is actually Figaro's birth mother (go figure.)
