There will be two different productions of the opera Elisir d’amore. The first one
will be staged, from the10th of February to the 31st of May, as part of the Opera
Domani project, and the second one in autumn as part of the opera season
promoted by the Theatres of the Circuito Lirico Lombardo

TITLE I
GENERAL REGULATIONS
ART. 1
The Competition is open to young opera singers from Europe, male and female,
who are under the age 32 as of 1st January 2004.
The competition will be held in Como Sociale Theatre from 29th January to 1st
February 2004.
To be admitted to the Competition, it is necessary to pass a pre-selection audition
to be held in the venues stated below.
ART. 2
Pre-selection auditions will take place before one or more members of the
As.Li.Co. Artistic staff, in the months preceding the Competition in the following
cities: Amsterdam, Atene, Barcellona, Bilbao, Bratislava, Colonia, Como, Dublino, Firenze, Graz, Helsinki, Londra, Palermo, Parigi, Praga, Sofia, Stoccolma,
Vienna.
Candidates will be duly informed where, when and at what time they should be
present.
Should fewer than 5 candidates register for any one of the pre-selection auditions,
these candidates may be asked to attend one of the other scheduled venues.
ART. 3
Candidates chosen from the Pre-selection auditions will be admitted to the
Competition which will be held in Como. The Competition will be divided into
three stages as follows:
Preliminary stage, 29th, 30th January 2004
Semi-final, 31st January 2004
Final, 1st February 2004
Candidates admitted to take part in the Competition must present themselves on
29th January 2004 at 9:30 AM at the Teatro Sociale in via Bellini 3, Como.
Prior to the beginning of the preliminary stage, a drawing will be held in the
presence of all candidates to determine the order of call. Based on the name
drawn, the call will continue alphabetically.
The Panel of Judges will inform candidates of their decisions at the end of each of
the three competition stages: Preliminary, Semi-Final, and Final.
The final decision will be expressed as a score based on the average of the scores
given by the individual members of the Panel of Judges, excluding the lowest and
the highest scores.
The Panel of Judges will draw up the classification and will declare the winners
of the Competition as those candidates with an average of no less than 8/10.
The Panel may announce more than one winner for each role in the Competition.
The Panel shall have the ability to announce “qualified” candidates.
TITLE II
REGISTRATION PROCEDURE
ART. 4
The attached Application Form, duly filled in and including the program (see
Art. 9) should be sent to the following address:

In the Application Form the candidate should state his/her first name, surname,
address, telephone number, voice type, and the venue of choice for the preselection audition.
The Application Form must be completed legibly and in full and must be signed
by the candidate. Additionally, the following documents should be attached:
a) Copy of a valid identification document for expatriation
b) A detailed artistic-professional curriculum, containing:
- Education
- Artistic activity
- Work experience
c) Two photographs (1 passport size and 1 of choice).
The application form with all supporting materials must be postmarked on or by
the 20th December 2003.
ART. 5
Candidates who pass the pre-selection audition and are admitted to the
Competition in Como will be required to pay a registration fee of 75 Euros.
Payment of the registration fee can be made:

ART. 6
As.Li.Co. :
a.
will not take into consideration any application without the supporting
documents requested in Article 4 above.
b.
As.Li.Co. reserves the right to ask for confirmation of the authenticity
of the copy of the identification documents attached and to check the accuracy of
the declarations made.
ART. 7
The registration fee is non refundable should the candidate fail to attend the
auditions or if the application is cancelled for any reason.
TITLE III
COMPETITION PANEL OF JUDGES
ART. 8
The Panel of Judges for the Competition will be comprised of two representatives
from As.Li.Co, one representative from the Scala Theatre, one representative
from the theatres belonging to the Circuito Lirico Lombardo, and three
international music experts. The As.Li.Co. Artistic staff will nominate one of the
latter as Chairman.
As.Li.Co. may appoint one or more substitute members in the event that one of
designated members is unable to attend a stage of the Competition. As.Li.Co.
may freely nominate substitute members, without taking into account the
substituted representative’s membership in any of the aforementioned
organizations.
TITLE IV
PROGRAMME
ART. 9
Each candidate must complete in full the programme section of the application
form (see Article 4).
Each candidate may audition for more than one opera in the Competition and
for more than one role within the same opera.
All candidates must:
a) present four memorized arias of their choice, at least one of which must be
preceded by recitative and all four of which should not be taken from the opera
in the competition for which the candidates are presenting themselves.
b) memorize the obligatory arias from the roles in the operas in the competition
(Schedule A).
The entire programme must be sung in the original language.
Any changes in the programme must be communicated to As.Li.Co. in writing
prior the pre-selection audition.
ART. 10
At the pre-selection audition, the candidate will perform one or more arias from
those listed in Article 9, one of which will be chosen by the candidate.
The Competition will be divided into the following stages:
a) Preliminary stage
- At the Preliminary stage the candidate will perform one or more arias from
those listed in Article 9, one of which will be chosen by the candidate. The aria of
choice must be different from the one sung at the pre-selection audition.
b) Semi-Final stage
- At the Semi-Finals, the candidate will sing one or more arias chosen by the
Panel of Judges from those listed in Article. 9.
c) Final Stage
- Candidates will sing one or more arias chosen by the Panel of Judges from those
listed in Article. 9.
All candidates progressing to the Final Stage will attend a special interview to
assess their sight-reading ability and their general knowledge of music.
The Semi-Final and Final stages will be held in public.
The Panel of Judges has the authority to interrupt the performance of the
candidates at any time.
The Panel of Judges reserves the right to declare winners for just one of the two
planned productions of L’Elisir d’amore.
ART. 11
At all stages of the Competition candidates will be accompanied by the pianist
appointed by As.Li.Co.
ART. 12
Past winners and finalists from previous competitions organized by As.Li.Co.
may take part in the Competition. They will be admitted directly to the SemiFinals.
TITLE V
WINNERS
ART. 13
The winners will be expected to attend both a training course and preparatory
course for all scheduled operas. The winners will perform their respective roles
in productions of the operas promoted by the “Circuito Lirico Lombardo”.
Those candidates judged “qualified” may also attend the preparatory courses
and may, after further examination by As.Li.Co. Artistic staff, be asked to take
part in programmed activities.
TITLE VI
COURSES AND ARTISTIC ACTIVITY
ART. 14
As.Li.Co. will provide training and opera preparation courses on the following
dates and times:
from 10th February to 9th March 2004
from l 5th April to 30th July 2004
from 25th August to 10th September 2004
The productions are scheduled for the following dates:
from 10th March to 30th May 2004
from 11th September to 20th December 2004
Failure to participate in all courses and contracted opera productions by winners
and those designated “qualified” will result in a penalty payable to As.Li.Co. of
50% of the total of the awarded study-grant as well as compensation for any
additional loss sustained.
ART. 15
While attending the training course, both winners and “qualified” performers,
will receive a net monthly study-grant of 800 Euro. The right to this grant is
dependent upon regular attendance at all preparatory courses deemed obligatory
by As.Li.Co.
In addition to the above-mentioned remuneration, winners and “qualified”
performers will receive payment for roles performed. All payments are stated in
gross and will be distributed in the following manner:
- 3700 Euro for participation in the Opera Domani project production.
- 4700 Euro for performances of the role won in the competition in all Fall
productions.
- 2100 Euro for winners who take part in other Fall productions in roles other
than those won.
No payment is received by the performer if she/he performs or covers multiple
roles within the same opera differing from the role won.
The above amounts will be subject to tax and social security deductions in
accordance with the law.
For the Opera Domani production, As.Li.Co. will pay hotel expenses for any
performances held outside the provinces of Milan and Como. For the Fall
productions, As.Li.Co. will pay hotel expenses to winners and “qualified”
performers for any performances held outside Lombardy.
ART. 16
The winners and finalists may be invited to take part in vocal-symphonic concerts
presented by As.Li.Co. or by other Italian and foreign musical organizations.
In collaboration with the As.Li.Co. artistic staff, winners may be asked to
participate in future productions during As.Li.Co.’s 2004 season. These roles
may differ from those presented during the competition.
ART. 17
As.Li.Co. reserves the right to film, record, and broadcast the Semi-Final, Final
Stages of the Competition on videotape, tape, film, radio, TV and CD, as well as
all performances included in the competition without payment to the participants.
ART. 18
As.Li.Co. may fill any roles left unfilled in the works to be performed with artists
declared suitable by the Panel of Judges at this competition, as well as with winners
of previous As.Li.Co. Competitions, with students at specialised centres for opera singers in other International Music Institutes, with special consideration to
members on institutions of EurOperaStudio, with winners of Competitions held
under the auspices of the EU and with individuals chosen at auditions organised
by As.Li.Co. itself.
ART. 19
Schedule A shall be considered an integral part of the Competition notice.
ART. 20
The regulations for the Competition shall be legally binding in the Italian language
version. Any disputes regarding these regulations shall be brought before the
Court of Milan.
Pursuant to Article 10, sub-section 1 of Law no.675 of 31/12/96, the personal
details supplied by the candidates shall be collected by As.Li.Co. for the purpose
of running the Competition. All interested parties shall be entitled to the rights
specified in Article 13 of the aforesaid law.
