On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Italian
unity, Ruggero Cappuccio was contracted to stage a new
production of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “La battaglia di
Legnano”. With this opera, premiered in 1849, Giuseppe
Verdi (1813-1901) won a unique spot in the hearts of the
Italian people, making the composer a living symbol of the
struggle for liberation and unification. Cloaked in a medieval
storyline, the opera was a call to arms against Austrian
oppression in northern Italy, and for the unification of
the Italian peninsula as one cultural nation. After its initial
successful run in Italy, it was outlawed by state censure after
the failure of the First Roman Republic; the work was thus
given several revivals under different names.
In his production, Cappuccio uses the symbolic power of the
libretto to call for a battle to preserve the cultural nation by
transposing the action into a museum depot, in which major
art works are waiting to be restored or exhibited and are
threatened by decay. “It’s a remarkable staging … and one
that works” (Corriere della Sera).
Leading the talented cast are Dimitra Theodossiou as
Lida, Andrew Richards as the freedom fighter Arrigo, and
Leonardo López Linares as Rolando, Arrigo’s best friend,
who married Lida after Arrigo had been given up for dead.
Distinguished conductor Boris Brott conducts with the
“fire needed for this patriotic opera. […] The audience was
thrilled” (Der neue Merker).
