FRANCO RIPA DI MEANA Director In 1984 he made his debut as an actor at the Biennale di Venezia with the “La Gaia Scienza” company directed by Giorgio Barberio Corsetti. From 1987 to 1989 he worked as assistant director at the Teatro alla Scala, and later with many Italian and European opera houses. Since1990 he has been working for several years as assistant with Luca Ronconi and Graham Vick. He made his debut as stage director in 1991 at the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli, and his firse production abroad was at the Wexford Festival in 1998. He has directed more than forty productions that range from ancient to modern operatic repertory. In the operatic field, he enjoyed collaborations with the most important Italian theatres including Teatro Regio in Torino, Teatro Comunale in Firenze, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Teatro dell’Opera in Roma, Teatro Valli in Reggio Emilia, Festival of Spoleto, Festival Verdi of Parma, Teatro Verdi in Trieste, Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova, abroad he has worked at Wexford Festival, Birmingham Opera Company, ABAO in Bilbao, Grazer Oper. In 2006 he made his Teatro alla Scala debut directing a new production of Mozart’s Ascanio in Alba. In 2006 he founded the theatre company “Operaoggi”, his first production was Carmen (se ti amo attento a te!). Since then the company presented more than forty performances of three different productions in such venues as squares, mines, theatres, parks, archaeological sites and at the Accademia Filarmonica Romana and Piccolo Teatro in Milano. As a librettist he has written the libretto of Marcello Panni’s Cella 27 (a work about the last days of Galeazzo Ciano’s life) and the libretto of Nicola Sani’s Il tempo sospeso del volo (a work about Giovanni Falcone’s life). The new opera Il tempo sospeso del volo was performed at the Teatro Valli in Reggio Emilia (2007; a co-production by “Operaoggi”, Fondazione I Teatri of Reggio Emilia and Festival Verdi of Parma). The production was also recorded on dvd for Medusa Film. Recent productions have included Tosca for the 2009 summer season of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma in Caracalla, Rigoletto, La traviata, Il trovatore at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, L’elisir d’amore in Beijing, Korngold’s Der Ring des Polykrates and Křenek’s Das geheime Königreich at the Lübeck Theater, Tosca at Macerata Opera Festival, Il suono giallo by Alessandro Solbiati at Teatro Comunale di Bologna, and the new work by Michele Dall’Ongaro, 116, Circa, for the Biennale of Venice.
