Cari Amici dell’Italia,
England: do you know that?” curata dalla bravissima Alessandra Granelli, gia’ tirocinante presso il Consolato e
valida co-redattrice della Newsletter.
informazioni contattate Lino Rullo (781 8621633), Paul Guida (617 4895234) o Alessandro Golkar

The Italians-HANDS ON!
at MIT - Room 4 – 370 - 77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge
What are the common denominators of Italians? For
me, there are five: certainly their sense of family along
with a flair of interpersonal relationships - and who
would argue about their lack of faith in institutions,
both Church and State? Another Italian attribute:
optimism, ability to resist trauma, resiliency.L’arte di
arrangiarsi (best translated as ―creative inventiveness‖)
is simply inborn in all Italians.
Last, but certainly not least of all, is their innate
aesthetic sense, evident in all aspects of Italian
lifestyles...and the multitudinous Italian gestures
undercore these common denominators. After all, for
the Italians, ―it’s all in the hands‖! Understand the
significance of each Italian gesture below? My talk,
―Italians, HANDS ON‖ tells all.
Cost: Free - however, seat reservations are required.

FRIDAY, MARCH 11 AND MARCH 13 AT 7:00P
ROMA, CITTÀ APERTA
At the Bright Family Screening Room – Emerson College
1945, Italy: The first film in
what has become known as
Rossellini’s War Trilogy,
Rome Open City was a
cinematic revelation that astonished the world with
its harrowingly authentic portrayal of Nazi-occupied
Rome and the brave few who struggled against it.
Begun only two months after liberation, the film was
conceived and directed amidst the ruin of World War
II and became the neorealist standard-bearer—its
stripped-down aesthetic, location shooting, use of
non-professional actors and political commitment
hallmarks of the movement that transformed cinema.
An intensely humane document of the tragedy and
hope in battle-ravaged Italy,
Rome Open City’s story concerns the interwoven
fates of a priest (Fabrizi) risking his life to aid the
Italian Resistance, an underground leader (Pagliero)
fleeing the Gestapo and the pregnant, pious Pina—
played unforgettably by Magnani in a passionate,
tormented, heart-breaking performance.
"Rome Open City quickly became legend and
remains one of the most powerful films ever made, its
unyielding treatment of death, torture, and
martyrdom shocking even to those inured by
intervening decades of screen violence.‖ –James
Quandt, Myth and Manipulation.
Directed by Roberto Rossellini with Anna Magnani,
Aldo Fabrizi, Marcello Pagliero
